Description of the Related Art In recent years, it is said that the multimedia age, and there is an increasing demand for a large capacity memory for storing data such as images and moving images. Typical examples of these large capacity memories are optical disks and magnetic disks. For example, a digital video disc having a track pitch of 0.75 μm and a shortest recording mark length of 0.4 μm is about to be put to practical use in an optical disc, and a magnetic disc has a large track pitch of several μm but a bit length of 0.4 μm or less. Things have been put to practical use. However, in order to reduce the recording bit size and increase the recording density, there are many problems to be overcome such as the diffraction limit of light and the low flying height of the magnetic head.

A probe made of permalloy having a tip curvature diameter of 200 nm is provided at the tip of a cantilever made of, and the probe is magnetized by contacting it with a perpendicular magnetic medium and magnetizing the probe tip with an auxiliary magnetic pole placed under the medium. Information is recorded by reversing the magnetization of the medium. With this method, recording is possible with a bit diameter of about 0.3 μm.

The amount of displacement of the piezoelectric body is small on the order of μm, and the recording location cannot be moved over a large area like an actual recording head. In addition, the piezoelectric body cannot move at high speed. In order to compensate for this, a technique of rotating the recording medium by a motor to move the recording location is disclosed in Japanese Patent Laid-Open No. 3-209685. However, since the probe is in contact with the medium, when the recording medium rotates at a high speed, the probe may be worn and a minute recording bit may not be formed.

However, dust adhered to the inner surface of the sliding part and the side surface of the probe. When the sliding surface was not coated with a wear resistant film, the tip of the probe 2 had a circular shape of about 1 μm, and it was confirmed that the probe 2 was worn, though not as much as the comparative example. It was also confirmed that the sliding surface and the tip of the probe were at the same height. Similar effects were obtained when boron nitride or carbon nitride was used as the wear resistant film 4 in addition to diamond-like carbon.

Although the magnetic field from the auxiliary magnetic pole is applied to the probe through the medium, for example, a thin film coil may be formed on the cantilever so as to surround the probe, and the probe may be directly magnetized by the magnetic field of the thin film coil. In this case, the probe and the thin-film coil can also be used as an inductive reproducing head.

In the first embodiment, the probe is completely surrounded by the donut-shaped sliding portion, so that the sliding portion comes into contact with the recording medium to form a closed space around the probe. Therefore, if dust or the like enters the closed space, the dust cannot escape. However, this is not the case in the present embodiment because no closed space is formed.

The soft magnetic material that covers the probe and the sliding portion was a NiFe alloy. A diamond-like carbon thin film was formed on the wear resistant film 64 by the CVD method. The disk-shaped recording medium 24 and the auxiliary magnetic pole 28 are the same as those in the first embodiment, and the conditions such as the rotation speed are also the same as those in the first embodiment.

The tip curvature of the probe 62 was about 0.1 μm, and no wear was observed. If the sliding surface is not coated with a wear resistant film, the tip of the probe 62 is about 1 μm.

Further, since the lubricating layer is formed on the sliding surface of the sliding portion, friction due to contact sliding can be reduced, and twisting of the cantilever and abrasion of the sliding surface can be reduced. Furthermore, by integrally forming the sliding portion and the probe with a soft magnetic material, recording can be performed with a smaller recording current.
