これより小さいデバイスを製作すると、立ち上がり時間

【0038】本発明によるディスプレイのモデルを作製

Claims (14)
- 【請求項1】 入射光信号に対して制御可能な可変反射
率を有する複数のマイクロメカニカル・モジュレータを
備え、前記反射率が光学的干渉効果によって制御され、
さらに複数のマイクロメカニカル・モジュレータを形成
する各マイクロメカニカル・モジュレータの反射率を、
データ信号を選択的に適用することによって個々に制御
するためのドライブ・エレクトロニクスと、 光信号を生成するための光源とを備える、直視型ディス
プレイ。 - 【請求項2】 マイクロメカニカル・モジュレータが、
ロウおよびコラムで特徴付けられたアレイ状に編成さ
れ、各マイクロメカニカル・モジュレータが、 ある屈折率を有する基板と、 少なくとも第1層の材料を有する光学的に透明なメンブ
レンとを備え、第1層が、基板の屈折率の平方根とほぼ
同じ屈折率を有し、さらに基板との間隔をあけてこれに
重なる関係を有する第1位置にメンブレンを配置して、
それと空隙を形成するための弾性支持体とを備え、 弾性支持体が、メンブレンを第2位置に移動するための
データ信号に応答して変形可能で、周囲の媒体中で測定
して光信号の波長の約4分の1だけ空隙を変化させ、第
1位置から第2位置への移動によって、メンブレンから
反射した光信号の量が変化する、請求項1記載の直視型
ディスプレイ。 - 【請求項3】 ディスプレイを形成するモジュレータ
が、最大約45度の半視角について、可視光線スペクト
ル全体にわたって少なくとも約7:1の明暗比を有する
ことを特徴とする、請求項1記載の直視型ディスプレ
イ。 - 【請求項4】 ディスプレイを形成するモジュレータ
が、少なくとも約40度の半視角について、可視光線ス
ペクトル全体にわたって少なくとも約7:1の明暗比を
有することを特徴とする、請求項1記載の直視型ディス
プレイ。 - 【請求項5】 ディスプレイが最大約45度の半角で見
るのに適した請求項1記載の直視型ディスプレイ。 - 【請求項6】 ディスプレイが少なくとも約40度の半
角で見るのに適した請求項1記載の直視型ディスプレ
イ。 - 【請求項7】 基板がp型ドーピングしたシリコンであ
る請求項2記載の直視型ディスプレイ。 - 【請求項8】 光メンブレンが、ポリシリコン、窒化シ
リコンおよびポリイミドで構成されたグループから選択
される請求項2記載の直視型ディスプレイ。 - 【請求項9】 弾性支持体が、実質的に光メンブレンの
下に配置される請求項2記載の直視型ディスプレイ。 - 【請求項10】 弾性支持体が、複数のトレンチ上に配
置された複数のペデスタル25を備える請求項9記載の
直視型ディスプレイ。 - 【請求項11】 弾性支持体が、支持体に固定された複
数の弾性ビームを備える請求項2記載の直視型ディスプ
レイ。 - 【請求項12】 メンブレンが第1位置にある場合に、
空隙が光信号の波長の4分の1の整数倍である請求項2
記載の直視型ディスプレイ。 - 【請求項13】 各モジュレータがさらに、ドライブ・
エレクトロニクスからデータ信号を受信するためのアド
レス電極を備える請求項2記載の直視型ディスプレイ。 - 【請求項14】 ドライブ・エレクトロニクスが、 ディスプレイの各モジュレータに対して1個のアドレス
・トランジスタを備え、 アドレス・トランジスタが、モジュレータのアドレス電
極と電気的に接触し、アドレス・トランジスタが、ゲー
トとドレインとを有し、ゲートが、ゲート行に電気的に
接続し、アレイ中のモジュレータの各ロウが独自のゲー
ト行を有し、ドレインが、データ行に電気的に接続さ
れ、アレイ中のモジュレータの各コラムが独自のデータ
行を有し、さらにゲート行を通してモジュレータのロウ
中で各アドレス・トランジスタと電気的に接触するゲー
ト・デコーダと、 データ信号を受信するためのシフト・レジスタとを備
え、 シフト・レジスタが、シフト・レジスタの受け取ったデ
ータ信号を並列移行させるための直並列変換器と電気的
に接触し、さらにデータ行と電気的に接続するドライバ
増幅器とを備え、 各データ行が独自のドライバ増幅器を有して、ドライバ
増幅器が直列移行したデータ信号を受け取り、 データ信号がシフト・レジスタに受信されて並列移行す
ると、ゲート・デコーダが、1つのロウに電気的に接続
されたゲート行に沿って信号を送ることによって1つの
ロウのアドレス・トランジスタを起動して、1つのロウ
の各アドレス・トランジスタのゲートにバイアスをか
け、これによってデータ行からのデータ信号を、その特
定のロウおよびコラムのアドレスに配置されたモジュレ
ータのアドレス電極に送ることができる、請求項13記
載の直視型ディスプレイ。
