BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION 1. Field of the Invention The present invention relates to a signal processing device for synthesizing signals. That is, the signal processing apparatus of the invention, the time the highest frequency to be processed is given not higher than f o (temporal) (having one or more dimensions) of the signal information components of the frequency spectrum real time (although , intended to be used in connection with the system that the unavoidable inherent time with delayed) decomposition between the input and output devices,
A pipeline assembly is used for real-time (but with an inherent time delay inevitable between the input and output of the device) synthesis of such a time signal from the decomposed frequency spectrum. In this specification, the device as described above,
Simply perform real-time processing (such as signal decomposition and synthesis) where there is an unavoidable time delay inherent in the device between the input and output of the signal to, for example, a pipeline structure. We will call it real-time processing. The invention is particularly suitable for, but not limited to, two-dimensional spatial frequency real-time image processing of a television image defined by a temporal video signal.

2. Description of the Related Art Although much research has been done on creating a model of the motion of the human visual system, the human visual system is a spatial frequency band in which spatial frequency information is concatenated and superposed in a large number. the by splitting has been found primitive spatial frequency decomposition of luminous images execution (operation) that to Rurashii. Each band has a width of approximately one octave, and the center frequency of each band differs from the center frequencies of both adjacent bands by a factor of approximately two. Studies have shown that the human visual system is 0 .
It has been found that there are approximately 7 bands or "channels" over the spatial frequency range of 5-60 cycles / degree . It is important of these findings, the human visual system is and the child that you process the spatial frequency information or more away twice from other spatial frequency information to the other and unrelated.

It has also been found that the processing of spatial frequencies occurring in the human visual system is spatially localized. The signal in each spatial frequency channel is thus calculated over a small subregion of the image, which subregions overlap each other and have a width of approximately two cycles at a particular frequency. Being use the lattice image of the sine wave as the test pattern, the threshold contrast-sensitivity function for the image is seen to roll off rapidly according to increase the spatial frequency of the image. That is, higher spatial frequency requires higher contrast (about 20% at 30 cycles / degree), but lower spatial frequency also requires relatively lower contrast (about 0.2% at 3 cycles / degree). .

It has been found that the ability of the human visual system to detect changes in the contrast of a sinusoidal grating image above a threshold is also better when the spatial frequency is lower than it is. In detail, the average human would need approximately 12% contrast change for a 3-cycle / degree sinusoidal grating to correctly distinguish 75% changing contrast over time,
A 30 cycle / degree grating requires a 30% contrast change.

Dr. Bert (Dr. Peter J. Burt), who knows the above-mentioned properties of the human visual system, uses a computer to decompose the two-dimensional spatial frequency of an image into a plurality of different spatial frequency bands. Developed a non-real-time algorithm (henceforth referred to as "Bert's Pyramid"). The width of each spatial frequency band (excluding the lowest spatial frequency band) is preferably 1 octave. Burt's pyramid algorithm has been implemented in non-real time by general purpose digital computers. The level of each pixel sample of the original image is represented by a multi-bit (eg, 8 bit) number stored at each address location of the computer.

The original image stored in the storage location can be processed by a digital computer according to Burt's Pyramid algorithm. This process convolution of pixel samples by a predetermined nuclear weighting function (kernel function), sample decimation, extended by interpolation samples, consists stage iteration implementation such as sample subtraction. Put to the dimension of the kernel function (one-dimensional or on more than
The size of that) are from the number of comparison to (pixels each dimension of the size of the full image) small. A partial region of a pixel, that is, a window (whose size is equal to the kernel function and is arranged symmetrically around each pixel in sequence) is multiplied by a kernel weighting function and summed by a convolution operation.

The kernel weighting function is chosen to operate as a multidimensional spatial frequency low pass filter of the convolved image. Nominal low-pass filter characteristics given to each dimension by a kernel function "cutoff frequency" (in filter technology is also known as "corner frequency" or "the break frequency")
Is chosen to be substantially one-half of the highest frequency of concern for that dimension of the convolved signal. This low pass filter characteristic is "brick wall" at a given cutoff frequency.
It is not necessary to have a roll-off, but one can have a relatively gradual roll-off , where the nominal cutoff frequency is some preselected attenuation value of the gradual roll-off (eg 3 dB).

Since Burt's Pyramid inherently compensates for aliasing introduction of spurious frequencies caused by the gradual roll-off low pass filter characteristic, a filter with a looser roll-off characteristic can be used. The convolved image is decimated (reduced, for convenience hereinafter referred to as decimation) by effectively sampling every other convolved pixel in each possible dimension of the image, thereby folding in each dimension. The number of pixels in the embedded image is reduced by 1/2. Since the image is usually a two-dimensional image, the convolved and thinned image is composed of only 1/4 of the number of pixels included in the image before the thinning. This convolved and decimated image (this is called a Gaussian image) is stored in the second storage device.

By repeating this procedure in the same manner, an additional (N-1) Laplace images L 1 to L are obtained.
Is formed Ru hierarchy derived from the N-1, to the image G 1 without Gaussian additional to G N-1 is stored (N-1) are written in that each corresponding number of storage devices (which by the storage Gaussian images G 1 to G N-1 in the device are replaced). The Gaussian image G N (minimum sample density) is not replaced with the Laplace image in its corresponding storage and is composed of the lowest spatial frequencies contained in the original image (ie those below L N-1 octaves). Remains in its storage device as a residual image .

[0018] According to Burt pyramid algorithm, expanding the stored residual image G N to sample density of the image L N-1, making the sum image in addition to the Laplacian image L N-1 stored it, Furthermore, the procedure of enlarging this sum image and adding it to the Laplace image L N-2 is performed by an iterative calculation method that is performed until the original high-resolution image is synthesized by the sum of all Laplace images and the residual image . The original image can be recovered without aliasing. Also, after one or more original images have been decomposed into N Laplace images and Gaussian residual images , and any necessary special image processing or modification steps (eg splining) before combining them into a complete high resolution image. Can also be introduced.

Although non-real-time execution of Bert's pyramid algorithm by computer processing is effective for processing fixed image information, a sequence of successively generated images that can continuously change in time (for example, continuous images of television images). It cannot be applied to disassemble frames. Such is the degradation of time-varying sequential generated image, it requires the already real-time execution of the proposed by UNA Burt pyramid algorithm by this calling inventor.

Each first input of the second to Nth relay means is coupled to each first output terminal of each immediately preceding relay means to provide a second
Each of the Nth to Nth relay means sends the signal to the relay means immediately after it. The second input terminal of each relay means is also coupled to receive a separate sampling clock signal, and by this configuration each relay means samples the clock signal applied to its first and second output terminals. Generate a signal at a frequency equal to the frequency.

Furthermore, each relay means exhibits, between its first input terminal and first output terminal, a low-pass transfer function for the information component of the signal applied to its first input terminal. The low pass transfer function of each relay means is a direct function of the sampling frequency of the clock signal applied to the second input of that relay means (the value of the independent variable increases (or decreases)).
Having a cascade value of means the shape of the functions that increase (or decrease less) variables), i.e. the nominal cutoff frequency is a monotonic function when. The clock signal applied to the second input terminal of the first relay means of the relay means group is (a) twice f 0 , and (b) the low frequency band of the first relay means is added to the information component. It has a sampling frequency that gives a nominal cutoff frequency of less than f 0 for the pass transfer function.

The clock signal applied to each second input terminal of the second to Nth relay means of the means group is
(A) lower than the clock frequency applied to the second input terminal of the relay means immediately before each relay means, and (b) at least twice as high as the highest frequency of the information component applied to the first input terminal. Equally, and (c) has a sampling frequency that gives its low-pass transfer function a nominal cutoff frequency that is lower than the nominal cutoff frequency of the immediately preceding relay means.
The signal applied to the second output terminal of each relay means corresponds to the difference between the information component applied to its first input terminal and the direct function of the information component applied to its first output terminal. .

The proposed signal that decomposes the component frequency spectrum in real time
Signal processing apparatus and signal processing apparatus for performing signal synthesis according to the present invention
The embodiments will be sequentially described. In FIG. 1, a group of extracted signals (sampled signals) relay means 100-1 to 100-N (N is a plural integer) arranged in ordinal order are:
Their respective two having an input terminal and two output terminals, a given time defining the information (temporal) signal G

Applied as an input to. Time signal G 0 is may be a continuous analog signal or a sampled analog signal (such as audio or video signals), in the latter case, it is also, indirectly to represent each sample level directly at the amplitude level Table I be (ie, the time signal in the digital numbers
No. G 0 is applied to the first input terminal of the relay means 100-1.

By passing the amplitude level Le) can also this. G 0
Frequency spectrum from 0 (ie DC) to frequency f
It includes a range from 0 (i.e. range including all processed frequency that corresponds to the information having the number of dimensions given). In other words, G 0 contains no frequencies higher than f 0.

In this case, the clock frequency 2f 0 of the relay means 100-1 satisfies the Nyquist criterion for all the frequency components of f 0 . However, G 0 may include some non-target frequency components that are higher than f 0 . In this latter case, the Nyquist criterion is not satisfied and some aliasing occurs, but from an actual point of view such aliasing is not desirable, but is often acceptable (unless too large).

1 , CL 2, ..., CL N are constrained as shown in FIG. 1, and the meaning of this constraint will be described in detail below. Further, in FIG. 1, the relay means 100-1 draws out the second output signal L 0 to the second output terminal thereof, and similarly the other relay means 100-2.
00-N outputs second output signals L 1 , ..., L N-1 to their second output terminals, respectively.

N is a low-pass transfer function for the frequency spectrum of the information component of the input signal applied to the first input terminal between each first input terminal and the first output terminal regardless of the special internal structure. It can be seen as a black box to present. Further, each of the relay means 100-1, 100-
The 2,100-N low pass transfer function has a roll-off with a nominal cutoff frequency that is a direct function of the sampling frequency applied to its second input terminal . As mentioned earlier, the roll-off for Burt's Pyramid is gradual rather than "brick wall."

Only frequencies that are not greater than f 1 in the frequency spectrum of G 0 (where f 1 <f 0 ) pass to the first output terminal of the relay means 100-1 and thereby the relay means 100-1. An output signal G 1 having a frequency spectrum (which is determined by a particular characteristic of its low-pass transfer function) which is originally formed in the lower part of the frequency spectrum of G 0 is extracted at the first output terminal of the output signal G 1 . This signal G 1 is then applied as an input to the first input terminal of the relay means 100-2.

The baseband frequency spectrum of G K is the same at the input and output of the decimator 104, but the decimator 1
When the sample density of the output signal 04 is low, the phase information present in the high G K signals of the sample density which is applied to the input is somewhat lost. The output of the decimator 104 is applied to the first input terminal of the relay means immediately after, and
It is also applied to the input of expander 106. Magnifier 106 is a clock CL with no samples from the output of decimator 104
It works by inserting a null (digital number representing a zero level) as an additional sample at each sample position of K. This restores the sample density at the output of expander 106 to the sample density at the input of decimator 104.

In the preferred case where the sample density in each dimension is reduced by 1/2, the expander 106 inserts a null in each dimension between each pair of adjacent samples in the output of the decimator 104 in that dimension. The expander 106 increases the output sample density for its input, but does not change the output G K signal information for its input. However, the introduction of nulls has the effect of adding an image or copy of the baseband GK signal information that occurs as harmonics of the sideband frequency spectrum CL.

The signal G K at the output of expander 106 passes through interpolation filter 108. The interpolation filter 108 is a low-pass filter that passes the baseband G K signal but blocks the sideband frequency spectrum CL harmonics. Thus filter 108 a null sample zero value, one lifting the respective surrounding it information
The work raki be replaced by a certain value which is determined by the value of each sample. The effect of this interpolated sample is to define the envelope of the informative sample at a higher resolution. Interpolation filter 108 thus substantially removes high frequency components above the baseband of signal G K at the output of expander 106, but the output of G K at the output of decimator 104. Information that is not already present in the low sample density G K signal is neither added nor can it be added. In other words, the expander 106 outputs the reduced sample density in each dimension of the G K signal to the G of the output of the convolution filter 102.
It works to restore the sample density in each dimension of the K signal.

The subtractor 110 applies the G K signal generated at the output of the interpolating filter 108 to the first input terminal of the relay means 100 a -K and applies it as the input of the convolutional filter 102, and also the delay device. Its subtractor 110 via 109
It acts to subtract from the G K-1 signal applied to. The delay device 109 includes the convolution filter 102 and the decimation device 10.
4, providing a delay equal to the total delay provided by expander 106 and interpolation filter 108. Therefore, the subtractor 11
Since the two signals applied to the 0 input have the same sample density CL K in each dimension and their delays are equal, subtractor 110 is represented by the digital number of each sample at its G K signal input. The level will be subtracted from the level represented by the digital number of the corresponding sample of that G K-1 input. In this way, the output of the subtractor 110 is the relay means 1
00 constituting the Laplace signal L K-1, which are taken to the second output terminal of a -K.

A second error compensating value comprised of frequencies within the pass band of the convolution filter 102 that substantially correspond to the phase information that is present in the sample-dense G K signal at the output of ## EQU1 ## but that is lost during the decimation process (described above). [0051] Each relay unit 100-1, ‥‥ 100-N has a configuration of a relay device 100 a -K in Figure 2, in this case,
The sample density of each dimension of the residual signal G K of the decomposed output taken out at the first output terminal of the last relay means 100-N of this relay means group is the G N-1 applied to its first input.
Less than sample density in each dimension of the signal (1/2 is preferred). However, by definition, there is no relay next to the relay 100-N, so in most applications (except for compressed data transmission) the sample density of the residual signal G N is the relay 1
It is important that it is smaller than the sample density of the G N-1 signal applied to the first input terminal of 00-N. Therefore, in this case, the last relay means 100-N is the relay means 100.
Instead of including the entire structure of a- K, the configuration as shown in FIG. 4 (each relay means 100-1 of the first type relay means group, ...

In FIG. 4, the convolution filter 102 has its sample density in each dimension determined by the convolution filter 102.
The G N signal output (which is the same as the G N-1 signal applied to the input of) does not pass through the decimator, but directly as the residual G N output signal of the last relay means 100 a -N of the first type relay means group. The output G N signal is applied directly as the G N input of the subtractor 110. In other words, the relay means 100 a -N in FIG

The first type shown in FIG. 2 (or alternatively FIGS. 2 and 4) implements Burt's pyramid algorithm in real time. It goes without saying that its most useful form is that the bandwidth of each Laplace component of the decomposed output derived by the Burt's Pyramid algorithm is one octave in each dimension. Most useful form of pyramid algorithm This Bad is obtained by the sampling frequency clock CL K + 1 of each dimension in the execution real-time 2 to 1/2 of the dimension of the sampling frequency clock CL K.

This surrogate pyramid is called the "filtered subtraction decimation (hereinafter FSD)" pyramid, which lacks some of the required properties of Bert's pyramid, but has desirable properties not found in Bert's pyramid. For example Bad pyramid (not in FSD pyramid) preferred characteristics although a pseudo aliasing frequencies present in each of the Laplace component and the residual component of the separations in the synthesis of the reproduced original signal is compensated, it's on the application The FSD pyramid requires less hardware and is therefore less expensive to implement.

The subtractor 1 of the second type of relay unit 100 b -K
Since the 10 G K inputs are not taken from the decimated sample density source, the expander 106 and the interpolator 108 are not needed in the configuration of the relay means 100 b -K. Thus, in FIG. 3, delay 109 provides only a delay equal to the delay introduced by convolution filter 102. Also, the subtractor 110
The output L K-1 of the G K-1 signal is composed of only the relatively high frequency components of the frequency spectrum of the G K-1 signal that are not present in the G K signal at the output of the convolution filter 102. According to a second type of structure, the last relay means 100-N may be a configuration of the relay unit 100 b -K, but also may take the configuration of FIG.

The filtering characteristics of a tapped filter depend on factors such as the number of taps, the effective delay between taps, the specified level and polarity of each weighting factor individually assigned to each tap. For purposes of discussion, convolution filter 102 is assumed to be a one-dimensional 5-tap filter. FIG. 5 shows an example of weighting factors having the same size (positive in FIG. 5) and having the same polarity, each having five individual taps. It also represents the effective delay time between each adjacent tap. More specifically, as shown in FIG. 5, the effective delay time between the adjacent taps is the first type or second type relay means 100-1, ... 100-N (FIG. 2, FIG. 3, FIG. 4). Each convolution filter 102 of

In FIG. 5, the weighting factors belonging to the five taps are all positive and have designated value levels symmetrically distributed with respect to the third tap. That is, in the example of FIG.
The weighting factor for the taps has a specified value of 6, the weighting factors for the second and fourth taps have the same lower specified value of 4, and that for the first and fifth taps is It has the same lower weighting factor of 1. In FIG. 5, all weighting coefficients have the same polarity (positive), but this is not essential for a low-pass filter, and some weighting coefficients have opposite polarities (negative) unless their algebraic sum is 0. It is also possible. The nuclear function waveform (eg, that of envelope 202 in FIG. 5) is the same for all convolution filters 102 of each relay means of the relay means group, so that the relative low pass frequency characteristic (at that frequency range) is filtering characteristics
It is also possible that the shape is (although not critical) the same for all filters 102.

However, the absolute value of the low pass nominal cutoff frequency of the filter of each relay means has a scaling that depends on the sampling frequency period 1 / CL K for that filter and the level of the weighting factor (see FIG. 3). By appropriately choosing a particular value of 1, 4, or 6), the highest frequency of the G K-1 signal input of convolution filter 102 (or G 0)
In case of, substantially 1/2 of the highest possible frequency f 0 )
A low pass nominal cutoff frequency of is obtained for the output signal G K of the convolution filter 102 (with sample density CL K in each dimension). In this case, the decimator 104 reduces the one-dimensional sample density of the G K signal to CL K / 2 by extracting every other sample of that dimension in each dimension, but (defined by the sample envelope 202). ) G K
The signal is essentially unchanged at the input and output of the decimator 104 (although some phase information is lost due to the low sample density of the decimator 104 output).

The high frequency portion of the input signal applied to each decomposition stage is extracted by removing the low frequency portion of the input signal. The decimated low frequency part of the input signal is in a sampling matrix having a resolution lower than that of the input signal, and there is an inconvenient problem of being delayed with respect to the input signal. The first of these problems is the magnifying circuit 31.
By introducing nulls at the missing sample points in the low-pass filtered response sample matrix at 3, 318, 323, 328, 333, 338, and eliminating the incidentally introduced pseudo-harmonic spectrum by low-pass filtering. The second problem is solved and is solved by delaying the input signal of the decomposition stage before subtracting it from the low-pass filtered response expanded by the expansion circuits 313, 318, 323, 328, 333, 338.

The “time shift” used here is information such as between corresponding samples of the decomposed output signals L 0 , L 1 , L 2 , L 3 , L 4 , L 5 , and G 6 of the spectrum decomposing device shown in FIG. 6, for example. A predetermined known amount of different time delays that occur between corresponding samples of parallel signals of related interest.

The spectra of L 5 and G 6 are corrected by the correction circuit 35.
It will be corrected at 0, 351. The correction circuits 345 to 351 may not be necessary for certain types of signal processing, and in this case, they may be directly connected and replaced. The spectral decomposition procedure described above can be expanded by adding decomposition stages or reduced by reducing the decomposition stages. In such a case, the residual low-pass spectrum GΩ becomes G 6 at the end of the spectrum decomposition.

FIG. 7 shows 310, 315, 320, 325, 330 used for spectral decomposition by octave.
The structure of a spectral decomposition stage for one-dimensional information such as 335 is shown in more detail. This stage is the Kth order spectral decomposition stage, where K is 0 or a positive integer. In the case of the 0th-order spectrum decomposition stage, its clock frequency is the sampling frequency R of the original input signal G 0 for spectrum decomposition, but when K is a positive integer, it is reduced to 1 / K.

In this respect, it is advisable to consider the low-pass filtering stage of the spectral decomposition procedure and the low-pass filtering characteristics used in the expansion stage of the spectral decomposition and signal synthesis procedure . Since this low-pass filtered are those having a linear position-phase characteristics, filter weights pattern is symmetric about the center sample. The sum of the filter weights is 1 in order to suppress as many low frequencies as possible in the high-pass spectrum L 0 and the band-pass spectra L 1 , L 2 , L 3 ... Performed by octave spectral resolution, thinning rate is 1 definitive in re-encoding partial band removed by the low-pass filtering of the spectral decomposition stage /
Given a value of 2, it is desirable to remove frequencies below 2/3 of the octave center frequency during low pass filtering.

The stepped frequency response of the filter (the so-called "brickwall" response) introduces an overshoot in the filtered signal and the G extracted by the spectral decomposition stage.
(K + 1) L generated by subtracting the function and G K is expanded from a G (K + 1) (K + 1) increases the dynamic range of a function. This is an example of the Gibbs phenomenon, which can be relaxed by using a not so sharp cutting of the Fourier series.

In practice, the number of samples in low pass filtering is usually very small. For filters with odd samples, the filter response contains a DC component and a series of cosine harmonics, and for filters with even samples, a DC component and a series of sine harmonics. The required response curve is approximated so as to fit the most smoothly by performing trial and error of weight counting using a computer.

Although the present invention can generate non-octave wide equal Q spectra, such methods appear to have limited utility. When the low-pass response is reduced to select every other sample, and the low-pass response is generated by filtering out frequencies equal to or lower than 1/2 of the center frequency of the band-pass spectrum, the bandwidth is reduced to, for example, 1/2. Not 1
A bandpass spectrum group that gradually becomes narrower by / 3 is generated.
The sample correction circuits 345-351 of FIG. 6 can take various forms, some of which can also be replaced by direct feedthrough. For example, in order to remove low-level background noise from various spectra, each correction circuit 345-3
It is also possible to configure 51 with the baseline clipper 700 of FIG. The clipper 700 may simply clip the lower bits of the signal.

FIG. 11 shows a circuit in which each correction circuit 345-351 can be used to form a spectral equalizer. The rotary switch 897 is adapted to generate a binary code for each of a plurality of axial displacements, and the code is supplied to a two-quadrant multiplier via a latch 898 to be multiplied by an input spectrum sample and synthesized. To produce an output spectral sample that produces G 0 ′.
Latch 898 retains the sign input of multiplier 889 while the setting of rotary switch 897 changes. Subdivide each octave spectrum using a digital filter that uses the same sampling frequency that was used to generate the octave spectrum or one-half that frequency, and adjust the gain of each subdivision of that spectrum separately. You can also do it. By subdividing the octave into 1/12,
For example, individual and chromatic adjustments of the signal encoding the music are obtained.

The delay of the delay circuit 1104 is longer than the 16M + D 1 + D 2 cycle of the clock frequency R by the difference between the time for generating G 3 to L 5 and the time for generating G 5 to L 4 . The time to generate G 5 to L 5 is for weighting and summing to collect the samples twice, for M cycles of clock cycle R / 2 5 or 32 M cycles of the base clock frequency for the sum of two sets of samples. 2D 1 and D 2 for sample subtraction. It occurs at the frame frequency of the frame. 52 for each frame
It consists of five interlaced horizontal scan lines, each odd-numbered horizontal scan line being transmitted sequentially during the first field period, and each even-numbered horizontal scan line during the second field period following the first field period. Sequential transmissions, followed by the first field of the next frame. The length of each field period is 1/60 seconds, but it is necessary to store at least the number of pixels within the field period so that the total spatial frequency of the image can be determined in delay real time.

Here, this low-pass filtered G 0 with a low sampling frequency is the Proceedings of the Eye E-E (Pr) issued in June 1973.

In the expansion circuit 1213, the decimator 1212
The nullified samples are null-replaced to produce another one-dimensional low-pass spatial frequency filter 1214 input signal. This filter can use the same sample weighting factors as the original low pass filter, but always has substantially the same cutoff frequency as the original low pass filter. The signal thus obtained has a sampling matrix of the same size as G 0 delayed by the delay circuit 1215, and the subtractor 1216
Is subtracted from the delayed G 0 to produce a high pass output response L 0 . L 0 is not only the high band part of G 0 , but also at the low sampling frequency in the decimator 12 during recomposition of the video signal from the spectral decomposition as described above.
It includes a low frequency phase error correction term used to compensate for the error introduced by resampling 0 .

[0108] separating each spectral decomposition of the low portion and the high band portion to be re-sampled at half the frequency of the signal
Repeated in steps . Each successive spectral decomposition stage receives as its input signal the resampling low-pass output response of the preceding spectral decomposition stage, with the sampling frequency at each spectral decomposition stage being one-half that of the previous spectral decomposition stage. Each spectral decomposition stage 12 after the first one stage 1210
The high-pass output response of 20, 1230, 1240, 1250, 1260 has an upper bound given by the low-pass response characteristics of its predecessor, and thus this "high-pass" output response is in fact an equal-Q bandpass spectrum of decreasing spatial frequency. Is. The decimation factor of the response of the first low-pass filter of each stage is 1/2 and the cut-off frequency of the low-pass filter of each stage is 2/3 of the center frequency of the spectrum it produces. This is a factor that makes the spectrum a octave of the two-dimensional spatial frequency.

The decimated lowpass output response GΩ provided by the final spectral decomposition stage decimator is now G 6 provided by the spectral decomposition stage 1260 decimator 1262, which is the residual lowpass. It is the spectral response.
This serves to sum the interpolated band spectral response of the subsequent spectral decomposition stage and the Capstone highband spectral response of the first spectral decomposition stage to resynthesize the signal. L 0 , L 1 , L 2 , L 3 , L 4 , and L 5 are in a time-lag relationship and are supplied while increasing the successive delay amount. The residual low band spectrum GΩ (here, G 6 ) is earlier in time than the last band spectrum GΩ −1 (here, G 5 ) and skews in the opposite direction.

As will be described later, the iterative method of synthesizing a signal from spectral components is also L 0 , L 1 , L 2 , L 3 , L 4 , L 5
It is necessary that the spectral components of are in time lag relations in the opposite directions. Before describing the processing of the spectral decomposition component and the synthesis of the signal from the processed spectral decomposition component, the structure of the spectral decomposition stage will now be further detailed. Consider the first two-dimensional low-pass filter structure.

As is well known in the filter design art, the two-dimensional filter structure is classified into non-separable type and separable type. First and second
The separable filter in the dimension is first filtered in a first direction using a first one-dimensional filter and then in a second direction perpendicular to the first direction using a second one-dimensional filter. It is achieved by filtering in the direction. Therefore, since the low-pass filtering characteristics of the two cascaded individual 1-dimensional low-pass filters constituting the decomposition type 2-dimensional low-pass filter are completely unrelated to each other, the kernel functions of the two low-pass filters are different from each other. And the structure may be similar to that described above with respect to FIGS. 2, 3 and 6-14.

For a television image consisting of a raster of horizontal scan lines, the two orthogonal directions of the separate filter are preferably horizontal and vertical. The use of separable two-dimensional low-pass filtering in the practice of this invention provides the benefit of performing horizontal low-pass filtering before vertical low-pass filtering, and vertical low-pass filtering before horizontal low-pass filtering. That will bring other benefits. For example, first performing horizontal filtering and decimation will reduce by 1/2 the number of pixel samples per horizontal scan line that should be acted upon by the vertical kernel function during the next vertical filtering, but with vertical filtering first While providing the required relatively long delay, the spectral decomposition stages 1210, 1220, 123 of FIG.

The integrated filtering response of the separable two-dimensional spatial frequency filter can be square or rectangular in cross section parallel to the spatial frequency plane, but the filtering response of the non-separable filter can have other cross sectional shapes. .. Circular or elliptical cross sections are possible because filters with such cross section responses can be used to reduce excessive diagonal resolution in television signals.
It is of particular importance for filtering raster scan television signals.
Uniformity of image resolution in all directions is also important in a television system, for example, in which the image needs to be rotated between a camera and a display device.

The kernel function matrix having this pattern of weighting factors acts on each successive image sample, and each pixel sample corresponds to the weighting factor J whose position is located at the center of the matrix when subjected to the action. In the low pass filter, the weighting factor J has the highest relative intensity level and each of the other weighting factors has an intensity level that decreases with distance from the center position. Therefore, the intensity levels of the weighting factors A at the four corners are the lowest.

FIG. 16 shows a plurality of successive signal combining stages 13
60, 1365, 1370, 1375, 1380, 13
A signal synthesizer including 85 is shown. Each stage uses interpolation to expand the sample matrix of spectral components to the same length as the next higher spectral component at spatial frequency so that it can be added to that spectral component. This expansion of the sample matrix alternates each sample point and null within the matrix and low pass filters the result to remove harmonic structures. This low-pass filtering preferably has the same filtering characteristics as the low-pass filtering associated with the corresponding interpolation process in the spectral decomposition device of FIG.

The low pass filtering associated with interpolation in the signal synthesizer can occur in a correction circuit (as described above with respect to FIG. 6) that can be inserted between the spectral decomposer of FIG. 15 and the synthesizer of FIG. Yes, suppresses harmonics associated with GΩ or L K signals that are modified by non-linear processing. This non-linear processing can cause visible aliasing phenomena in the combined composite image without the low pass filtering associated with the interpolation processing used in the signal combiner.

Although the two-dimensional embodiment of the present invention is particularly suitable for use in processing the spatial frequency of an image in real time, the two-dimensional information involved in the present invention is limited to the spatial frequency spectrum of the two-dimensional image. Not done. For example, it is possible that one of the two dimensions corresponds to spatial frequency information and the other corresponds to temporal frequency information. Further, the technique related to the present invention is useful for decomposing the real-time frequency spectrum of information determined in three dimensions or more. For example, in the case of three-dimensional information, all three dimensions may correspond to spatial information, two dimensions may correspond to spatial information, and the other one may correspond to temporal information.
Of interest to this is an image processing device that responds to movement in the displayed television image.

In this case, the portion of the spatial frequency spectrum of the display image corresponding to the stationary subject does not change between the video frames of the video information, whereas the portion corresponding to the moving subject changes from frame to frame. A spectrum decomposing device using this principle can also be used in such an image processing device utilizing a three-dimensional low pass filter. The three-dimensional two of the low-pass filters are spatial and correspond to the two spatial dimensions of the two-dimensional low-pass filter associated with each stage of the two-dimensional spectral decomposer of FIG. 15, and the third dimension is Time, which corresponds to the fine structure characteristic of the three-dimensional spectrum due to the change in the inter-frame value of the intensity level of the corresponding pixel of the display image due to the interlocking subject.

In the above description of the embodiments of the present invention,
Although it has been assumed that the time signal G 0 is a baseband signal having a frequency spectrum that determines one-dimensional or more information, it is well known that such baseband information has a carrier frequency that is modulated by the baseband information component. Frequently, communication is performed in a frequency-multiplexed format that is composed of sidebands. In each of FIG. 1, the relay means 100-1, ...
