The materials constituting the ECD are roughly classified into inorganic materials and organic materials. The former are various transition metal oxides, and the latter are representative examples of conductive polymer films such as polyaniline, polypyrrole and polythiophene. In recent years, various ECDs using these materials have been developed.

(Problems to be Solved by the Invention) The basic constitution of the inorganic ECD made of various transition metal oxides is such that ITO (In 2 O 3 containing 5% by weight of SnO 2 ) or the like is formed in a thin film transparent state. A color-forming layer, a dielectric layer or a solid electrolyte made of various transition metal oxides is laminated in a thin film between a pair of electrodes.

The inorganic ECD has the advantages that it can be made small and thin, and that it is durable and can operate stably for a long period of time, but on the other hand it is poor in color density and absorbance change when a voltage is applied, and It has been pointed out that there is also a problem with responsiveness. This is because the material for the oxidative coloring layer, which is suitable for the counter electrode of the reduction coloring layer such as WO 3 , has not been found in the inorganic material, and the trace amount of water necessary for the electrochemical reaction is not induced. This is because it is difficult to seal the body layer in the fixed electrolyte.

On the other hand, the basic structure of the organic ECD is one in which the conductive polymer film or viologen derivative is laminated between a pair of thin film transparent electrodes made of ITO or the like, or these are sealed in a cell together with an electrolytic solution. is there.

It has been pointed out that the above organic ECD is superior in responsiveness to the inorganic ECD, but on the other hand, there is a problem in durability of the element and there is concern about stable operation for a long period of time. This is because an excellent material for the reduction coloring layer has not been found in the organic system, and it is difficult to seal the electrolyte in the cell without causing the electrolytic solution to leak for a long period of time. More traditionally,
To seal the electrolytic solution in the cell, the tank containing this electrolytic solution and the hollow cell is evacuated to immerse the cell in the electrolytic solution, and then the electrolytic solution is injected using atmospheric pressure in the tank. The method of doing was adopted. However, this method also has a drawback in that the cost of the obtained device is high because the manufacturing process is troublesome.

As described above, both types of elements have advantages and disadvantages, and none of them have been able to fully exhibit the characteristics of ECD. Therefore, the current situation is that satisfactory dimmers and display devices using these ECDs have not been obtained.

In view of the above problems, the present inventors have conducted extensive research on the characteristics of various ECDs, and as a result, have excellent responsiveness, and since the coloring density at the time of voltage application is high, the contrast change with the reverse voltage application is remarkably rich. The inventors have found a novel ECD having characteristics and completed the present invention.

(Function) By forming an oxidative coloring layer with an organic material and a reducing coloring layer with an inorganic material, and by forming an electrolytic solution between these coloring layers and facing each other, both coloring layers are applied when a voltage is applied. The efficiency of the phase-auxiliary oxidation / reduction reaction that occurs in 1) is improved. Further, by forming the electrolytic layer with a solid or semi-solid substance made of a molten mixture of an organic polymer and an electrolyte, the sealing of the electrolytic layer is facilitated and the response is excellent even at low voltage driving. In addition, an element that exhibits high-density coloring performance and is excellent in durability can be obtained. Further, since polyaniline is used as the organic oxidative coloring layer, and a solid or semi-solid one made of a molten mixture of an organic polymer and an electrolyte is adopted as the electrolytic layer, it is excellent in light transmission at the time of erasing, and An element having excellent durability when driven with high contrast can be obtained. Furthermore, since the electrolyte layer contains an organic polymer, it has a high viscosity, so that the electrolyte itself is prevented from leaking out, and the adhesiveness with the transparent electrode is also high, so even if the transparent electrode is crushed, it can be broken into small pieces. Are prevented from scattering.

EFFECTS OF THE INVENTION As described in detail above, according to the present invention, an extremely large change in contrast can be obtained because the coloring density is high when a voltage is applied, and the degree of change in the contrast can be determined by repeating the coloration and decoloration. Has almost no change, so it has excellent durability. In addition, since polyaniline is used for the oxidative coloring layer in particular, it has excellent light transmittance at the time of erasing. Also,
Since the electrolytic layer is solid or semi-solid, liquid leakage from the electrolytic layer can be prevented. Furthermore, since the electrolytic layer contains an organic polymer, it has a high viscosity, so it can absorb mechanical stress from the outside due to deformation, and the polymer has an adhesive property with the transparent electrode. Therefore, even if the substrate of the transparent electrode is crushed, it is possible to prevent small pieces of the substrate from scattering.
