2. Description of the Related Art Conventionally, for example, wristwatches have been put into practical use that are equipped with a backlight consisting of a small lamp on the back side of a liquid crystal display panel. However, in watches, the display is identified by lighting it for a very short time at night.
Backlights are minimally necessary only for telling the time, and are not fully satisfactory in terms of brightness, uniformity of light, decorativeness, lifespan, etc.

However, in the above-mentioned liquid crystal display device, since the linear light source 2 is arranged directly below the liquid crystal display panel 1, the area close to the light source 2 is bright and the area far from the light source is dark, resulting in uneven illumination. There are problems such as a bright striped pattern appearing on the surface of the display panel along the linear light source.

For example, the diameter of the light emitting portion of the linear light source 2 is generally smaller than the width of the side wall of the liquid crystal display panel 1, so within the wall of the display panel 1, the diameter of the light emitting portion of the linear light source 2 is Uneven lighting tends to occur.

FIG. 12 is a plan view showing an example of the display state in the conventional example, in which the upper and lower parts 1d of the display of "AM 5:45" are dark and the central part 1c is bright. Here, if the linear light source 2 is moved away from the display panel 1, the illumination unevenness will be alleviated, but some light will still remain, and the entire liquid crystal display device will become thicker.

FIG. 11 shows an example of a display state when using a linear light source having a non-light emitting part or a weakly emitting part as described above. Since it is close to the center 2a of the light source 2, it is exposed to strong light, and the end of the light scatterer 10 is the end 2 of the linear light source 2 that does not emit light or has a weak emission intensity.
Since it is close to the light emitting center 2a and far from the light emitting center 2a, the light that hits it is weak. Therefore, in the display state shown in FIG. 11, the portions marked "AM" and "3" on the edge portion 1b of the liquid crystal display panel 1 are dark, and the central portion 1a is dark.
Since the "5:4" display part is bright, the aesthetic appearance is spoiled. In this case, if the linear light source 2 is moved away from the liquid crystal display panel 1, the illumination unevenness will be alleviated to some extent, but some light will still remain and the overall thickness of the liquid crystal display device will increase.

That is, in a liquid crystal display device including a liquid crystal display panel and a linear light source disposed on the back side of the liquid crystal display panel substantially parallel to the liquid crystal display panel, light from the linear light source is transmitted and at the same time It has a scattering function and varies the light scattering intensity on a surface substantially parallel to the liquid crystal display panel so that the light scattering intensity in a region close to the linear light source becomes gradually larger than in other regions. The present invention is characterized in that a light scattering body having a structure similar to the above is disposed between the linear light source and the liquid crystal display panel, and a semi-transmissive reflector is disposed on a surface of the light scattering body facing the liquid crystal display panel.

As mentioned above, a light scattering body is arranged between the linear light source and the liquid crystal display panel so that the light scattering intensity in the area close to the linear light source becomes gradually larger than in other areas. It becomes possible to uniformly illuminate the liquid crystal display panel with light from the light source through the light scattering body.

In addition, a semi-transmissive reflector is provided on the surface of the light scattering body on the liquid crystal display panel side, so that when the surroundings are dark, for example, the light source is turned on and the liquid crystal display panel is illuminated through the semi-transmissive reflector. When it is bright, the display can be viewed without turning on the light source by reflecting external light with the semi-transmissive reflector.

Furthermore, since the transflector itself has a light scattering effect, the provision of the light scatterer as described above makes it possible to illuminate the liquid crystal display panel more uniformly.

In this embodiment, a light scattering body 10 made of milky white polycarbonate resin, milky white acrylic resin, etc. is disposed between the liquid crystal display panel 1 and the linear light source 2.
By configuring the thickness of the light scattering body 10 in the direction parallel to the linear light source 2 to be thick at the center and thin at the ends, the light scattering intensity at the center in the longitudinal direction of the linear light source is reduced. An example is shown in which the area is made to gradually become larger than other areas.

By configuring as described above, the center part of the light scattering body 10, which is exposed to strong light, is thicker, so a large amount of light is scattered and transmitted to the ends, and the light intensity at the center part becomes slightly weaker. At the ends of the light scattering body 10, the thickness is thin, so light passes through well, and the light scattered at the center is transmitted, increasing the light scattering intensity. Even when using a linear light source in which a weak light emitting portion is present in the display, the illumination intensity in the longitudinal direction of the display body can be averaged.

In addition, a semi-transparent reflector 11 is provided on the surface of the light scattering body 10 on the liquid crystal display panel 1 side, and in the daytime when the light source 2 is not turned on, the light incident from the panel 1 side is reflected by the semi-transparent reflector 11. When the light source 2 is turned on, the light from the backlight can be scattered and transmitted.

Moreover, the transflector 11 itself has a light scattering effect, and by using it in combination with the light scatterer 10 as described above, the unevenness of light can be further reduced. Furthermore, if the illuminance of the backlight is too strong, the intensity of the light illuminating the liquid crystal display panel 1 can be appropriately reduced by inserting the semi-transmissive reflector 11.

The reflector 9 of this embodiment is formed to have a substantially U-shaped cross section so as to cover the lower surface of the linear light source 2 and both side surfaces along the length of the light source. The above-mentioned plastic light guide is made of, for example, polycarbonate resin or acrylic resin, and the reflective layer is made of aluminum or other metal thin plates or laminate sheets of metal foil and plastic by adhesive, mechanical attachment, or mechanical pressure. It can be constructed by attaching A, Ni, or Ag to the above-mentioned light guide by vapor deposition or sputtering, or by mixing and painting with adhesive or paint. With such a configuration, a reflector that is lightweight and has excellent reflective performance can be obtained.

Further, as shown in FIGS. 3 and 4, the reflector 9a, which has a substantially U-shaped cross section, covers the lower surface of the linear light source 2 and both side surfaces along the longitudinal direction of the linear light source 2. A reflector 9b covering both ends may be integrally provided with the same structure as the reflector 9.

In this way, especially when there is a weak light emitting part or the like at the end 2b of the linear light source 2 as described above, it is possible to compensate for the insufficient amount of light on the display surface corresponding to the end 2b. Furthermore, if the thickness of the light scattering body 10 in the longitudinal direction of the light source is made thicker at the center and thinner at the edges, the brightness of the display surface in the longitudinal direction of the light source will be reduced. can be averaged even better.

FIGS. 5 and 6 show other embodiments of the liquid crystal display device according to the present invention, in which the thickness of the light scattering body 10 in the longitudinal direction of the linear light source 2 and in the direction crossing the longitudinal direction is changed, respectively. Therefore, an example will be shown in which the light scattering intensity at the central portion of the linear light source in the longitudinal direction and the direction perpendicular thereto becomes gradually larger than in other regions. That is, as shown in FIG. 7, the light scattering body 10 of this example has a thickness in the direction parallel to the longitudinal direction of the linear light source 2 such that it is thick at the center and gradually thinner at the ends. , as shown in FIG.
The thickness in the direction intersecting with is also thick at the center and gradually thinner at the ends.

As mentioned above, in general, when the diameter of the light emitting portion of the linear light source 2 is smaller than the width of the side wall of the liquid crystal display panel 1, the line light source 2 intersects the longitudinal direction of the linear light source 2 within the wall of the display panel 1. However, as mentioned above, the thickness of the light scattering body 10 in the direction intersecting the linear light source 2 should be thicker at the center near the light source and thinner at the end far from the light source. This makes it possible to eliminate uneven illumination in the direction orthogonal to the linear light source for almost the same reason as in the examples of FIGS. 1 and 2.

Also in this embodiment, a semi-transparent reflector 11 is provided on the surface of the light scattering body 10 on the liquid crystal display panel 1 side, so that when the surroundings are dark, the light source 2 can be turned on and the display can be viewed. At times, the display can be viewed by reflecting light incident from the panel surface on the semi-transmissive reflector 11 without turning on the light source 2, and the power consumption of the light source 2 can be reduced.

Lighting means for display bodies such as liquid crystal display panels needs to be small, thin, low price, and low in power consumption in order to take advantage of the thinness of the display body, and tungsten lamps are preferred as such light sources. However, first, tungsten lamps have a color temperature of around 2000°K, and have slightly red emission spectral characteristics, and the transmission spectral characteristics of liquid crystals tend to emphasize red light, so tungsten lamps have a color temperature of around 2000°K. However, there is a problem that the appearance and coloring deteriorate. Second, although there are slight differences in the definition depending on the manufacturer, 50% to 80% of lamps have a lighting life of tens of thousands of hours at most without breaking, and when used for long periods of time or constant lighting, It is necessary to have a structure that allows easy lamp replacement.
The structure becomes complicated, which is disadvantageous to miniaturization. Also,
For example, if a socket or the like is used to facilitate lamp replacement, costs will increase accordingly. Furthermore, as the illumination area becomes larger and the number of lamps used increases, the probability that one of them will break and will have to be replaced increases, making it even more disadvantageous. Furthermore, in order to form a linear light source, the filament needs to be made into a linear shape, and the longer the filament is, the more strain it places on the structure, which further reduces the lifespan and reliability.

On the other hand, cold cathode discharge tubes have a short lifespan that is almost semi-permanent as long as they are used at the rated value, and when they are constantly lit, it takes more than tens of thousands of hours for the luminous intensity to be halved, making it necessary to replace the light source. It has the advantage of not causing any sexual problems. Secondly, the emitted light color is white, and especially when used as a backlight for a liquid crystal, the color tone harmonizes well with the liquid crystal, the lighting state of the liquid crystal is excellent, and the backlight has a great decorative effect. For this reason, it is especially suitable as a backlight for liquid crystal color displays using color polarizing plates or color filters, and for guest-host type color displays.
It is also suitable as a backlight for type and DTN types. For the above reasons, a cold cathode discharge tube is preferable as a light source for decorative liquid crystal lighting for constant lighting or long lighting.

As explained above, in the liquid crystal display device according to the present invention, the light scattering intensity in the area between the liquid crystal display panel 1 and the linear light source 2 close to the linear light source 2 becomes gradually larger than in other areas. Light scatterer 1
0, the light from the linear light source 2 can uniformly illuminate the liquid crystal display panel through the light scattering body 10.

In addition, a semi-transparent reflector 11 is disposed on the surface of the light scattering body 10 on the liquid crystal display panel 1 side, so that when the surroundings are dark, for example, the light source 2 is turned on and the liquid crystal display is displayed through the semi-transparent reflector 11. Illuminates the panel 1, and when the surroundings are bright, the semi-transparent reflector 1 emits light from the outside.
By reflecting the light from the light source 1, the display can be viewed without turning on the light source 2, which reduces power consumption and is economical.

Moreover, since the semi-transmissive reflector 11 itself has a light scattering effect, the light scatterer 1 as described above also has a light scattering effect.
Coupled with the provision of 0, it becomes possible to illuminate the liquid crystal display panel more uniformly, and there are effects such as being able to provide a good liquid crystal display device in which the illumination intensity over the entire surface of the display body is constant and there is no illumination unevenness.
