By the way, one example of a conventional driving device for a cold cathode discharge lamp is, as shown in FIG. It has a switching circuit 2 provided with a switching element 2 that switches according to a signal, a primary winding La and a secondary winding Lb, and the primary winding La is energized by the switching element 2. The high frequency high voltage generated in the secondary winding Lb by switching of the switching element 2 is applied to the discharge lamp 4 to drive the discharge lamp 4 to light up.

By the way, in the case of a cold cathode fluorescent lamp used as a backlight of a liquid crystal panel display device, the brightness is variably adjusted and dimmed by varying the average applied voltage of the fluorescent lamp according to the brightness around the display device. Particularly when the surroundings are dark, such as at night, it is desirable to lower the average applied voltage to reduce brightness and reduce power consumption.

When the discharge lamp 4 in FIG. 9 is a cold cathode fluorescent lamp and the brightness of the discharge lamp 4 is variably adjusted and dimmed, for example, the generation circuit 1 is provided with the frequency of the high frequency switching pulse signal and the frequency of each cycle. A volume that variably adjusts the pulse width is provided, and by adjusting the volume, the switching frequency and on/off period of the switching element 2 provided in the switching circuit 2 are varied, and the high frequency of the secondary winding Lb of the step-up transformer 3 is changed. It is conceivable to vary the frequency of the high voltage and the application time of each cycle.

By the way, when varying the frequency of the high frequency switching pulse signal and the panel width of each cycle,
In particular, when the frequency of the high-frequency switching signal is lowered to an audible frequency of, for example, about 1 KHz in order to reduce the brightness, an oscillation sound can be heard due to the resonance of the fluorescent screen of the discharge lamp 4 and the step-up transformer 3, which is unpleasant to the ears.

On the other hand, if you shorten the pulse width of each cycle of the high-frequency switching signal to shorten the lighting time of each cycle of the discharge lamp 4 and reduce the brightness, if the pulse width is shortened beyond a certain level, the lighting drive will become unstable. become.

Therefore, in practice, the frequency of the high-frequency switching signal is limited to a lower limit of the range of variation above a frequency considerably higher than the aforementioned audible frequency, and
The shortest pulse width is limited to such an extent that lighting drive does not become unstable.

Therefore, even if the variable frequency of the high-frequency switching signal and the variable pulse width are combined, the discharge lamp 4
The dimming variation range is not very wide, especially the variation range toward the low luminance side, and there is a problem that a sufficient reduction effect on power consumption cannot be obtained.

At this time, the pulse time constants of both monomultis 12 and 14 are variably set in conjunction with each other by the variable setting circuit 15. In particular, the low frequency switching pulse signal is set when the duty factor is in the range of 100% to 0%. Variable.

Instead of varying the frequency of the high frequency switching pulse signal, the high frequency switching pulse signal is chopped by the low frequency switching pulse signal, and the lighting drive period of the discharge lamp 8 by the high frequency switching pulse signal is varied. , discharge lamp 8
In order to vary the brightness of the discharge lamp 8, the pulse top period of the low frequency switching pulse signal is shortened.
Even if the lighting driving period is shortened and the brightness is lowered, the discharge lamp 8 can be reliably lit at the high frequency of the high frequency switching pulse signal without generating noise such as an unpleasant oscillation sound, and, The length of the pulse top period of the low frequency switching pulse signal,
Since the pulse top period of the high-frequency switching pulse signal changes in conjunction with the short switching period, the variable range of the brightness of the discharge lamp 8, that is, the dimming range can be made wider than before without generating noise.
In particular, the range of change towards the low luminance side becomes significantly wider,
For example, in the case of a cold cathode fluorescent lamp for the backlight of a liquid crystal panel display device, the brightness can be appropriately lowered at night to reduce power consumption.

Next, the case of the second embodiment will be explained. In this case, the output reset of the monomulti 12 is released only during the pulse top period of the low frequency switching pulse signal, and the high frequency switching pulse signal is output from the mono multi 12. Therefore, without providing the NAND gate 16, the switching period and the on period of the switching element 6' can be varied based on the setting of the pulse time constant of the setting circuit 15 in the same manner as in the first embodiment.
Although the configuration is simpler than that of the first embodiment, the same effects as those of the first embodiment can be obtained.

As described above, according to the driving device for a cold cathode discharge lamp of this invention, the modulation means converts the high frequency switching pulse signal of a constant frequency of the high frequency pulse generation circuit into the low frequency switching pulse signal of a constant frequency of the low frequency pulse generation circuit. modulating with a pulse signal, keeping the switching frequency of a switching element of a switching circuit constant by a high frequency switching pulse signal, and limiting the switching period to a pulse base period or a pulse top period of a low frequency switching pulse signal, and The pulse width variable means allows dimming by varying the pulse width of both switching pulse signals, so the cold cathode discharge lamp is stabilized at the constant frequency and high voltage of the high frequency switching pulse signal, regardless of whether the brightness is high or low. In addition, based on the variable switching period of the switching element and the pulse width of the high-frequency switching pulse signal, noise such as oscillation sound can be reduced when the frequency of the high-frequency switching pulse signal is varied. This allows the dimming range of the discharge lamp to be made wider than that of the conventional method, and in particular, it is possible to widen the range of change toward the low luminance side, thereby reducing power consumption.
