For magnetic particles produced by these pulverization methods, for example, Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open No. 54-84730,
As described in JP-A-54-84731, JP-A-57-53756, JP-A-57-81271, JP-A-58-7646 and JP-A-58-80650, A method of manufacturing magnetic particles by a turbidity polymerization method has been proposed. These methods directly produce magnetic particles by suspending a mixture of a polymerizable monomer, a polymerization initiator, magnetic powder, etc. in water and polymerizing the mixture. These suspension polymerization methods make it possible to obtain spherical magnetic particles containing magnetic powder inside the particles, but they generally have the drawback that it is difficult to control the content of magnetic powder.

In this method, an oil-soluble initiator is first absorbed into monodisperse seed particles, and then an inert solvent such as cyclohexanol or toluene and a crosslinking monomer are absorbed and polymerized to form porous monodisperse particles. obtain. At this time, a functional group that easily binds to iron is imparted to the polymer by copolymerizing a polymerizable monomer having a functional group or by later nitrating the porous polymer particles. The polymer particles are then dispersed in an aqueous solution containing divalent iron or other metal salts and trivalent iron salts, and the pH is raised to precipitate the metals in the form of hydroxides, dispersing them on the surface and inside of the polymer particles. Magnetic latex is manufactured by adsorbing it to a magnetic latex and heating it if necessary.

In this method, the polymer particles are made porous in order to increase the content of magnetic substance in the polymer particles, but in order to make the particles porous, it is necessary to use an extremely large amount of a crosslinking agent. For this reason, the magnetic polymer particles obtained by this method have a high softening point, and when these magnetic polymer particles are used as a magnetic toner for developing electrostatic images in electrophotography, the heat fixing properties and pressure required for the toner are high. A problem arises in that properties such as fixability cannot be satisfied.

The vinyl polymer particles can be easily produced by polymerizing the vinyl monomers described above by commonly used suspension polymerization or emulsion polymerization. It is also possible to employ the swelling polymerization method disclosed in Japanese Patent Publication No. 57-24369, which is advantageous in that it makes it possible to obtain magnetic particles with a uniform grain size.

The vinyl polymer particles thus obtained are required to have a glass transition point of 40° C. or higher. If the glass transition point of the polymer is lower than 40°C, mechanical friction mixing between the polymer particles and the magnetic powder will not be carried out smoothly, and even if mixing is performed, the polymer particles will collapse and interact with each other. This is undesirable because it causes fusion and causes so-called blotting.

Moreover, the particle size of the vinyl polymer particles is required to be within the range of 0.5 to 300 μm, preferably 1 to 70 μm. Polymer particle size is 0.5μm
If the diameter of the polymer particles is less than 300 μm, the fluidity of the polymer particles during friction mixing will decrease, resulting in poor workability. If the particle size of the polymer particles exceeds 300 μm, the particles will be crushed during friction mixing, resulting in spherical shapes. The problem arises that it is not possible to obtain magnetic particles.

It is required to have an average particle size of 1/5 or less of the average particle size of the polymer particles. If magnetic powder with a particle size exceeding this range is used, the magnetic powder will not adhere to the surface of the polymer particles in a uniformly distributed state, and as a result, the resulting magnetic particles will have significant surface irregularities, which is not preferable. The magnetic powder is preferably spherical or nearly spherical in shape, and preferably has a major axis/minor axis value within 2 to 3.

In the present invention, by simply mechanically mixing the above-mentioned vinyl polymer particles and magnetic powder, it is possible to obtain magnetic particles in which the magnetic powder is attached to the surface of the vinyl polymer particles, and In order to reliably obtain magnetic particles in good condition, it is necessary to appropriately set the mixing temperature, mixing time, etc.

Mixing must be carried out within a range in which the macroscopic temperature of the entire system does not exceed the glass transition point of the polymer constituting the vinyl polymer particles, and is usually carried out at room temperature. If the temperature of the mixed system exceeds the glass transition point of the polymer in the vinyl polymer particles, it is necessary to cool the system.

The mixing time varies depending on the mixing device used, the particle size of the vinyl polymer particles and magnetic powder to be mixed, and the like. For example, when using a mortar or automatic mortar as the mixing device, the mixing time is usually 30 minutes.
It is preferable to set the time to about 120 minutes. If the mixing time is too short, the bond between the vinyl polymer particles and the magnetic powder will be insufficient, and if the mixing time is too long, the vinyl polymer particles may be deformed.

In the present invention, the mechanism by which the magnetic powder adheres to the surface of the vinyl polymer particles and is not detached due to mixing is not necessarily clear;
The present invention generally utilizes the phenomenon that when a solid applies mechanical energy to powder to induce a so-called mechanochemical phenomenon, the powder adhering to the solid becomes difficult to detach. This mechanism works by first bringing a solid (vinyl polymer particles) and a powder (magnetic powder) into close contact with each other due to static electricity generated by friction, and then a portion of the surface of the polymer particles is instantly damaged by locally generated frictional heat. It is thought that as a result of being in a softened or molten state, the two adhere firmly. For this purpose, the polymer particles used are preferably thermoplastic, but
In the case where the magnetic powder is attached to the surface of the polymer particles so as to be embedded in the irregularities, the polymer particles do not need to be thermoplastic. Wet mixing or dry mixing of vinyl polymer particles and magnetic powder causes the magnetic powder to adhere to the surface of the polymer particles, but dry mixing is preferred in order to take advantage of the adhesion caused by static electricity. If magnetic powder is attached to the surface of vinyl polymer particles by dry mixing and then mixing is continued, the vinyl polymer particles and magnetic powder will form a strong bond, and even if they are dispersed in water, for example, the magnetic powder will not form. does not separate from the vinyl polymer particles.

In addition, when the magnetic particles obtained by the present invention are used as a magnetic toner for developing electrostatic images in electrophotography, carbon black or blue,
Chromatic pigments such as red, yellow, and green can also be added. However, when adding chromatic pigments to make a color toner, it is necessary to use a light-colored magnetic powder such as γ-iron oxide so as not to inhibit the coloring properties of these pigments.

Example 1 From a styrene/butyl acrylate copolymer (polymerization ratio 83/17) with an average particle size of 10 μm, approximately 84% of particles having a particle size in the range of 8 μm to 12 μm, and a substantially uniform particle size. Polymer particles (glass transition point: 60°C) and magnetite "EPT1000" (manufactured by Toda Kogyo Co., Ltd.) with an average particle diameter of 0.5 μm, which corresponds to 40% of the polymer particles, were placed in an automatic mortar (Nichito Kagakusha Co., Ltd.). Magnetic particles were obtained by mixing for 60 minutes at a temperature of 25°C. Then, when the magnetite not adsorbed onto the polymer particles was separated, the amount of this magnetite was 3% or less of the total amount of magnetite used.

(e) Place 1.0 g of magnetic particles in 100 ml of toluene, leave at room temperature for 24 hours, centrifuge at 4000 rpm for 10 minutes, collect the precipitated components and dry them to yield 0.340 g. A solid component was obtained. (The theoretical amount of magnetite in magnetic particles is 28.6%.) When this solid component was ashed in a Matsufuru furnace at a temperature of 700°C for 8 hours, the weight decreased by 18%. It was hot. The component corresponding to this weight loss was the polymer component, and this revealed that part of the polymer was strongly bonded to the magnetite.
