Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a sintered polycrystal transparent yttrium-aluminum garnet with a simple process by using F- ion as a sintering assistant, specifying the molar ratio of Y2O3 to Al2O3 in the material and sintering the material under specified conditions.
CONSTITUTION: At least one kind of material selected from a group consisting of Y2O3 and the compds. which are thermally decomposed into Y2O3 by calcina tion and at least one kind of material selected from a group consisting of Al2O3 and the compd. which are thermally decomposed into Al2O3 by calcination are mixed so that the molar ratio of Y2O3 to Al2O3 after calcination is con trolled to 0.374:0.626 to 0.40:0.60, and the mixture is calcined at 500-1300°C. In this case, ≤4000 weight ppm, based on the total amt. of the calcination product, of F- ion is incorporated into the product. The calcination product is primarily sintered at 1300-1550°C in an oxygen-free atmosphere and then at 1650-1900oC in an oxygen-free atmosphere to obtain a polycrystal transparent yttrium-aluminum garnet contg. 3-1200 weight ppm F- ion.
