Abstract

PURPOSE: To quench generation of arc when a power cable after a withstand voltage test is earthed thereby to ensure safety by connecting a series unit having a bushing, a gas insulating switch and a discharge coil electrically and mechanically connected in series to a direct current voltage generating device in parallel.
CONSTITUTION: When the withstand voltage of a power cable 4 is to be tested, a circuit breaker 17 is opened and the voltage generated by a direct current voltage generating device 8 is raised to a testing voltage, and then a high voltage is impressed to the power cable 4 through a water resistance 11. Subsequently, when the circuit breaker 17 is closed after the voltage is impressed for a predetermined time, the power cable 4 is earthed via a leading cable 7, the circuit breaker 17 and a coil 18, so that the charges are discharged. The residual energy in the cable 4 is attenuated by a time constant, of a product CR of the capacitance of the cable 4 and the resistance value R of the coil 18. Since the charges of the cable 4 are discharged within the breaker 17, the arc when the circuit, is closed is generated in the tank, thereby quenching the arc and ensuring safety.
