Abstract
PURPOSE: To provide the above device having a higher contrast and higher response speed by specifying the product of the refractive index anisotropy of a liquid crystal and liquid crystal layer thickness of a liquid crystal cell for compensation and the refractive index anisotropy of the liquid crystal of a liquid crystal for display.
CONSTITUTION: Polarizing plates 31, 32 are respectively disposed on the light incident side and exit side of the liquid crystal cell 10 of an STN type for display and the liquid crystal cell 20 for compensation of the STN type twist- arranged with liquid crystal molecules in the direction reverse from the twist direction of the liquid crystal molecules of the display cell 10 is provided between the display cell 10 and the polarizing plate 32. The product of the refractive index anisotropy ▵n2 of the liquid crystal of the compensation cell 20 and the liquid crystal layer thickness d2 is set smaller than the product of the refractive index anisotropy ▵n1 of the liquid crystal of the display cell 10 and the liquid crystal layer thickness d1. The value of ▵n1.d1 of the display cell 10 is set larger than 0.7 and the refractive index anisotropy ▵n1 is set at ≥0.18.
