Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a composite material having superior wear and heat resistances by forming a Ti-Al-Cr-N coating film having a specified compsn. on the surface of a base material.
CONSTITUTION: A Ti-Al-Cr-N coating film having a compsn. represented by a formula (Ti1-x-y.Alx.Cry)N (where x<0.8 and 0.2<y<0.7) is formed on the surface of a base material such as stainless steel, high-speed tool steel or a sintered hard alloy. The reason for the limited amt. (x) of Al in the film is that the hardness (wear resistance) of the film is lowered in the case of x>0.8. The reason for the limited amt. (y) of Cr in the film is that the heat and oxidation resistances of the film are deteriorated in the case of y≤0.2 and the hardness is lowered in the case of y≥0.7. A composite material having superior wear resistance and heat resistance (oxidation resistance at high temp.) and useful for a cutting tool having a long service life, etc., can be obtd.
