Abstract

PURPOSE: To reduce an irregularity in the orientation of the orientation film of a liquid crystal display element and flaws which are caused by foreign matter, and to improve the display quality by preventing pile which is implanted in rubbing cloth from being disordered and providing a foreign matter removal groove, a foreign matter discharge opening for discharging the foreign matter, and a foreign matter sucking mechanism which sucks the scattered foreign matter.
CONSTITUTION: The corner part in where a stage 3 mounting a substrate 1 coated with the orientation film 2 and the pile 41 which is implanted in the rubbing cloth 40 of a rubbing roller 4 contact each other is provided with a taper 31 in parallel to the rubbing roller 4 and made smooth to prevent the pipe 41 from being disordered. Further, the foreign matter removal groove 11, the foreign matter discharge opening 32 for discharging the foreign matter 50, and the foreign matter sucking mechanism 5 which sucks the scattered foreign matter 50 are provided to at least one of the surface of the substrate 1 on both sides of the orientation film 2 and the surface of the stage 3.
