Abstract

PURPOSE: To make the definition of a projection display image high without increasing the number of picture elements of a display liquid crystal panel and to realize the high definition with small size at low cost by providing a means which shifts the projection image and a means which projects projection areas of the respective picture elements discretely on a screen.
CONSTITUTION: An image signal V is divided by a distributor 7 into two images, which are written in frame memories 61 and 62. In a 1st field, an image signal V1 from the memory 61 is sent to a display liquid crystal panel 3, a voltage applied to a liquid crystal panel 1 for polarizing direction control, is turned on, and an image displayed on the display panel 3 is projected and displayed on the screen 10 by a projection lens system 4 with light traveling straight in the panel 1. In a 2nd field, the voltage applied to the liquid crystal panel 1 is turned off, so the light shifts by a distance equal to a 1/2 picture element pitch and the image on the screen is displayed at a position shifting by the 1/2 picture element distance as compared with the image of the 1st field. Consequently, the same picture element can be projected on the panel 3 as two adjacent picture elements in two fields and they can be seen as one high-definition image because of the afterimage effect of the human eve.
