Abstract

PURPOSE: To easily and exactly detect the degree of deterioration of a catalyst by detecting the concn.of NOx after passage through the catalyst and deciding the deterioration of the catalyst in accordance with the detected value thereof when an engine attains a preset operating state.
CONSTITUTION: An air flow meter 10, a suction pressure sensor 12, a crank angle sensor 13, a water temp. sensor 14 and an oxygen sensor 15 constitute an operating state detecting means 20. The concn. of the NOx in exhaust gases is detected by NOx concn. detecting means 19 consisting of an NOx sensor 16, an NOx concn. detector 17 and a sensor heating means 18. A control unit 20 has the function as a means for deciding the deterioration. The temp. of cooling water and the rotating speed and suction negative pressure of the engine are first read. Judgment is made that the engine is in the specified operating state suitable for NOx detection and the means 19 is operated if these values are within the range of the prescribed values. The detected value obtd. by detecting the NOx concn. is then compared with the prescribed value. Judgment is made that a converter 8 is under normal operation when the detected value is below the prescribed value.
