Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:The optically inactive liquid crystal compound of formula I (R is 1-18C alkyl; X1 is single bond, O, S, CidenticalC or OCOO; A1 to A3 are 1,4- phenylene which may be substituted with F or Cl; Y1 and Y2 are single bond, CidenticalC, COO, OCO or CH2CH2; m is 0 or 1; X2 is COO, O or S; n is integer of 0-7; R' is 1-5C alkyl or alkoxy; provided that Y2 is CidenticalC when either one of Y1 and Y2 is CidenticalC or CH2CH2 and m is 0). USE:A liquid crystal exhibiting smectic C phase and useful as a ferroelectric liquid crystal material. PREPARATION:The compound of formula Ia which is one of the compounds of formula I can be produced by preparing a compound of formula 5 from a compound of formula 2 (M is Li, Na or K; Y<1> is Br or I) via compounds of formula 3 and formula 4 and reacting the compound of formula 5 with a compound of formula 6 in triethylamine in an inert gas atmosphere in the presence of a zero-valent or bivalent Pd catalyst.

A new TN type display element with an angle of 70° has also been developed, but its response speed is still inferior. Although various efforts for improvement have been made as described above, a TN type display element with a fast response speed has not yet been realized. However, new display systems using ferroelectric liquid crystals, which have been actively researched recently, have the potential to significantly improve response speed (

This is a method that uses equivalent chiral smectic phases.

In addition to ferroelectric liquid crystal compositions consisting only of ferroelectric liquid crystal compounds, JP-A-60-36003 discloses compounds exhibiting non-chiral smectic C, F, G, H, I, etc. phases and It has been reported that the composition as a basic substance can be mixed with one or more compounds exhibiting a ferroelectric liquid crystal phase to form a ferroelectric liquid crystal composition as a whole. Furthermore, it has been reported that a compound or composition exhibiting a phase such as smectic C is used as a basic substance, and one or more compounds that are optically active but do not exhibit a ferroelectric liquid crystal phase are mixed to form a ferroelectric liquid crystal composition as a whole. As these basic substances, various compounds exhibiting a non-chiral smectic liquid crystal phase such as smectic C can be used, but for practical purposes, liquid crystal compounds or mixtures exhibiting a smectic C phase in a wide temperature range including room temperature are desirable. Components of these smectic C liquid crystal mixtures include liquid crystal compounds such as phenylbenzoate, biphenyl, phenylpyridine, and 5-alkyl-2-(4-alkoxyphenyl)pyrimidine.

[Problems to be Solved by the Invention] However, it is unclear whether chiral smectic C liquid crystal materials obtained by adding optically active compounds to these materials exhibit excellent performance in liquid crystal displays that utilize ferroelectricity. , a final evaluation has not yet been obtained. This is because liquid crystal displays that utilize ferroelectricity have not yet been technically perfected. Therefore, it is currently necessary to test various new smectic C materials.

The mixture was refluxed until the color of potassium permanganate disappeared. After the reaction was completed, unreacted p-iodo-0-fluorotoluene was removed by distillation, and the mixture was cooled to room temperature. After removing manganese dioxide by vacuum filtration, the filtrate was made acidic by adding concentrated hydrochloric acid. Isolate the resulting white precipitate by vacuum filtration,
After washing with water and drying, the product was recrystallized with toluene to obtain 42 g of p-iodo-0-fluorobenzoic acid.

1.4 g of p-n-decyloxy-m-fluorophenylacetylene obtained in ■■ and p-iodo-p'-2 obtained in
-Methylbutyloxycarbonylbiphenyl (1.98 g) was reacted in 50 ml of triethylamine using 40 mg of bistriphenylphosphine palladium dichloride and 10 mg of iodized steel (I) as catalysts in room salt under a nitrogen atmosphere for one day and night. After the reaction was completed, triethylamine was removed and the mixture was extracted with hexane. The hexane layer was washed with IN hydrochloric acid water, washed with water, treated with a silica gel column, and then recrystallized twice with ethanol to obtain 2.28 of the compound No. 46 in Table 1, which is a white crystal compound of the present invention.
