Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve the use efficiency of a luminous flux from a light source and to realize an optical system having compact constitution by providing an optical interference filter on the light emitting surface of the light source and transmitting only the luminous flux in a vertical direction with respective to the light emitting surface.
CONSTITUTION: The optical interference filters 32R, 32G and 32B are provided on the light emitting surfaces of the light sources 31R, 31G and 31B so as to transmit only the luminous flux having component which is almost vertical to the light emitting surface as to the light of the respective light sources 31R, 31G and 31B having peak wavelength. As the result, the luminous flux emitted from the light source 31 becomes the almost collimated luminous flux and a light valve is extremely efficiently irradiated. Besides, as the result that the light is concentration in the vertical direction, the light quantity whose (θ) is a 0° direction becomes double or more. The optical interference filter is constituted of an alternating multi-layer film made of a high refractive index material such as TiO2 and Ta2O5 and a low refractive index material such as SiO2 and MgF2. Besides, the above described effect is excellently attained by making the number of layers five or more.
