Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide the subject novel polymer having excellent impact resistance and not losing the luster of the vinyl aromatic polymer by preparing from butadiene and a vinyl aromatic compound in a specific ratio so as to give a specified structure.
CONSTITUTION: The objective copolymer consists of a copolymer comprising (A) 3-97wt.% of butadiene component and (B) 97wt.% of a vinyl aromatic compound (generally styrene) wherein the ratio of cis 1,4-bonds in the butadiene component of the copolymer is ≥80wt.%. The copolymer may be prepared e.g. by a method comprising polymerizing the component A in the presence of a polymerization catalyst consisting of a rare earth metal phosphate salt, an organic Al compound and a Lewis acid in an inactive solvent such as hexane, adding the component B to the polymerization product and subsequently continuing the polymerization reaction so that the content of the component B becomes ≥3wt.% in the copolymer. The rare earth metal is preferably neodymium, etc.
