Abstract

PURPOSE:To obviate the degradation in the effective opening rate of the picture elements of the liquid crystal display device and to eliminate the generation of defects in the orientation treatment such as rubbing by forming insulating layers up to the same height as the height between picture element electrodes into the spacings between the adjacent picture element electrodes. CONSTITUTION:The picture element electrodes 10 are provided in the upper part of a picture element insulating layer 9 and the insulating layers 17 are formed into the spacings between the adjacent picture element electrodes up to the same height as the height between the picture element electrodes. The ruggedness on the surface of the active matrix substrate is, therefore, eliminated and the thickness quantity of the liquid crystal layer is constant in all display regions when the liquid crystal display device is constituted. Since there are no parts of the shade by the steps of the picture element electrodes, the partial unorientation defect by the orientation treatment, such as rubbing, is prevented.

2. Description of the Related Art Conventionally, a system using a CRT has been put into practical use as a projection display device for consumer use. Because it is difficult to simultaneously increase the back brightness and resolution of a CRT, the screen of this type of projector display is dark, and expensive optical components such as large-diameter projection lenses are required.
It also has problems such as being large in size and heavy in weight. Therefore, in recent years, a light valve type (liquid crystal light valve type) projection display device using liquid crystal has been proposed as an alternative to the CRT type.
Some have been commercialized. Japanese Unexamined Patent Publication No. 59-230383 discloses a projection display device using a transmissive active matrix substrate, but since an area for providing a switching element is required for each surface element, it is difficult to effectively light the pixels. There is a limit to pixel density in terms of the area ratio (aperture ratio) that can be controlled. In a projection display device, how small the light valve can be made depends on the optical system and
Since this greatly affects the size and price of the system, active matrix substrates that cannot support miniaturization and high density are extremely disadvantageous.

With the above structure, the entire area excluding the gap for electrically separating adjacent pixel electrodes can be effectively used as a pixel electrode. Therefore,
Since the aperture ratio can be significantly increased compared to a transmission type active matrix substrate, it is possible to respond to miniaturization and higher density. Furthermore, since the pixel electrode completely covers the switching element, it is possible to prevent the function of the switching element from deteriorating due to photoconduction or the like.

Problems to be Solved by the Invention However, even if the surface of the pixel electrode is flat in the active matrix substrate with the above structure, the electrode itself will have a step difference, and when a liquid crystal display device is constructed, the pixel electrode portion Since the thickness of the liquid crystal differs in the gap for electrically separating the pixel IF pole and the pixel IF pole, there is a problem in that display unevenness occurs.

By adopting the above-described structure, there will be no unevenness on the surface of the active matrix substrate, and when configuring a liquid crystal display device, the thickness of the liquid crystal layer will be constant in all display areas, so there will be no unevenness caused by uneven thickness. Since the occurrence of display unevenness can be prevented and there is no shadow area due to the step difference in the pixel electrode, it is possible to prevent partial non-alignment defects due to alignment treatment such as rubbing.

As described above, according to this embodiment, by forming the insulating layer between the pixel electrodes to the same height as the pixel electrode surface,
When a liquid crystal display device is constructed with no unevenness on the surface of the active matrix Muff, the thickness of the liquid crystal layer becomes constant in all display areas, so it is possible to prevent display unevenness due to uneven thickness.

In the above embodiment, a TFT was used as a switching element, but the present invention is not limited to this. If the insulating layer formed in the gap between adjacent pixel electrodes is made of an opaque insulator with a high light absorption coefficient, effects such as photoconduction due to light entering the gap and irradiating the switching element due to multiple reflections at the interface can be achieved. This can prevent the functionality of the switching element from deteriorating.

Furthermore, as the number of pixels increases with higher density, the yield of active matrix substrates sharply decreases. When at least two switching elements are formed in each pixel, the probability that all the switching elements become defective at the same time becomes extremely low, so that a decrease in yield can be prevented. It is clear that the yield can be significantly improved by separating the defective switching element from the pixel using the laser trimming method.

In FIG. 2, parts that are the same or corresponding to those in FIG. 4 are given the same reference numerals and detailed explanations will be omitted. Since there are no irregularities on the surface of the active matrix substrate, the thickness of the liquid crystal layer remains constant in all display areas, making it possible to prevent display unevenness caused by uneven thickness, and to prevent unevenness caused by steps in the pixel electrodes. Since there is no shaded area, it is clear that non-alignment defects due to alignment treatment such as rubbing can be prevented.

Effects of the Invention As described above, the present invention forms an insulating layer between adjacent pixel electrodes to the same height as the pixel electrode surface in an active matrix substrate, thereby reducing the thickness of pixels in a liquid crystal display device due to uneven thickness of the liquid crystal layer. In addition to eliminating the reduction in the effective aperture ratio, since there are no irregularities on the surface of the active matrix substrate, it is possible to eliminate the occurrence of defects in alignment processing such as rubbing, and it is possible to significantly improve the yield of liquid crystal display devices. It is possible to obtain excellent effects, and its industrial and practical value is great.
