Abstract

PURPOSE: To always keep a desired strength of tension and to attain stable recording and reproduction by setting a tape tension to a thin magnetic tape stronger than a tension to a thick magnetic tape.
CONSTITUTION: An arithmetic control circuit 14 at first obtains the thickness of tape and reads a tape tension Tn corresponding thereto from a memory. As soon as a voltage of a speed setting signal S4 is set to a voltage V4 to carry the tape at a prescribed tape carrying speed, a voltage of a tension setting signal S5 is set to a voltage V5 corresponding to the tension read from the memory. Then a supply reel motor drive circuit 16 receives the signal S5 and controls a supply reel motor 31 so that the voltage V5 and a voltage V1 of a tension signal S1 outputted from a potentiometer 12 are equal to each other thereby giving a tape tension read from the memory to the tape. Thus, as the thickness of the tape is made thinner, the tape tension is stronger according to a prescribed relation and the contact pressure is always kept close to the desired value.
