CONSTITUTION: An engine control unit for vehicle is provided with a constant speed control means 8 capable of controlling constant speed running in accordance with a target vehicle speed, acceleration/deceleration control means 9 and 10 capable of controlling accelerating/decelerating running in accordance with a target acceleration and an engine output regulating means 7 regulating engine output by driving a throttle valve according to these control signals and controls the engine at a specified period. To set this engine control period, a time according to delay in control response in a power transmission system mounted on a vehicle to transmit power from an engine 13 to the wheels is calculated and a value of its time plus a time required for the control is set as engine control period. Thus correct engine control can be always realized.
