Abstract

PURPOSE: To widen the allowance range of the one cell thickness at the time of approximately equaling the retardations of a driving cell and a correcting cell by varying the double refractive index of the liquid crystal materials used for both the cells.
CONSTITUTION: The 1st cell [cell thickness d1(μm)] 1 constituted by crimping a 1st liquid crystal layer (double refractive index Δn1) 8 having a twist angle ranging from 180 to 360° between substrates 2 and 3 and the 2nd cell [cell thickness d2(μm)] 10 constituted by crimping a 2nd liquid crystal layer (double refractive index Δn2) 11 twisted in the reverse direction at the same twist angle between the substrates 2 and 3 are held in place between two sheets of polarizing plates, by which the above liquid crystal display element is formed. The 1st and 2nd liquid crystal layers 8, 11 which are different in the double refractive indices Δn1, Δn2 from each other are used and the cell thicknesses d1, d2 of the 1st and 2nd cells 1, 10 are varied from each other, by which the difference between the values of the retardation Δn1.Δd1 and the value of the retardation Δn2.d2 is kept within 0.06. The allowance width of the cell thickness at the other cell is increased in this way.
