Abstract

PURPOSE: To accurately and efficiently measure the diameter of a sphere by holding the sphere in a tapered through hole.
CONSTITUTION: When a laser beam 14 is emitted from a semiconductor laser device, the laser beam 14 is focused by a projection lens and made incident on the upper end part of the sphere 4. The laser beam 14 is reflected on the sphere 4 and a displacement detection signal SD outputted from a photosensitive detector PSD through a light receiving lens 17 as a reflected laser beam 16 shows the amount of displacement from a position where a reference sphere 25 is held in the through hole 1 to a position where the sphere 4 is held in the through hole 1. Next, a sphere diameter computation part 11 in which the signal SD at that time is inputted calculates a distance (h) from a lower opening 6 to the upper end part of the sphere 4 by obtaining a difference between the amount of displacement and a distance H. Then, the diameter d1 of the sphere 4 is calculated.
