Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain the amplifier for a rare earth element-added light source which enhances the intensity of excitated light and can attain a high amplification degree by constituting the light source for excitation of 2 kinds of laser light sources which are respectively different in oscillation wavelength. CONSTITUTION:Two pieces each of GaAlAs-LDs 3, 3' of, for example, 0.82mum oscillation wavelength and InGaAsP-LDs 5, 5' of 1.48mum oscillation wavelength are used as the light source for excitation of the erbium-added optical fiber as an optical amplification medium. These LDs are so disposed that the planes of polarization of the light beams thereof intersect orthogonally with each other. The light beams are multiplexed by polarization beam splitters 4 and 6. The polarization-multiplexed light beams from the GaAlAs-LD and the InGaAsP-LD are multiplexed by a dichroic mirror 7 and are made incident via an objective lens 2 on the erbium-added optical fiber 1. The amplification degree is easily improved by the simultaneous excitation of the two wavelengths in such a manner.
