CONSTITUTION: The supervisory and controlling part 4 detects the communication speed of the terminal from a transmission signal line 2, transmits communication speed information to a transmission part 6, which transmits communication speed information to the opposite station-side through a transmission line 7. On the other hand, data which the opposite station-side has transmitted is received in a reception part 9 through a reception line 8, is transmitted to the supervisory and controlling part 4, which detects the communication speed from transmission data and switches the communication speed from communication speed information. Thus, DSU and OCU themselves can automatically set the communication speed between the private data line terminating equipment (DSU) and the local line terminating equipment (OCU), and communication interruption owing to the mistake of speed setting can be prevented.
