Abstract

PURPOSE: To make it possible to ensure the measurement of the distance between vehicles by operating the distance between a preceeding vehicle and a following vehicle from the interval between the distinctive two points at the rear part of the preceding vehicle which are formed on an image sensor.
CONSTITUTION: As dinstinctive two points 2 and 3 at the right and left of the rear part of a preceeding vehicle 1, e.g. tail lamps are used at night. A vehicle- distance measuring apparatus A which is attached to a following vehicle is composed of the following parts: a lens 4 which forms an optical system; an image sensor 5; a memory device 6; a microprocessor 7 which processes image signals, operates the distance between the vehicles and detects the direction and the amount of the movement of the vehicle and the right and left shift of the preceeding vehicle; a light projector 8 which projects infrared rays to the preceeding vehicle; and an input device 9 through which a driver indicates the kind of vehicles. The distance between the vehicles is measured from the interval of the points 2 and 3 whose images are formed on the image sensor. Therefore, the measurement of the distance between the vehicles can be ensured even if the preceeding vehicle is deviated from the advancing direction of the following vehicle.
