Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent any variation in light receiving element output due to characteristic deterioration by compensating the luminous energy of a light emitting element so as to cause the light receiving element output to become a reference value at time of no medium, and radiating the light emitting element on the basis of the stored compensation value at time of medium existence.
CONSTITUTION: When a medium is not in a medium passage, a switch 2 is closed, voltage is impressed on a light emitting element 5 via an integrating circuit 3 of a luminous energy control means 100 and a switch 4, and when the emission is received by a light receiving element 6 and its output voltage VP has reached to a reference voltage VR, a condenser C1 is charged by the voltage. When the medium is passed through the medium passage, the switch 2 is turned off, and an electric charge stored in this condenser C1 is impressed on the light emitting element 5, comparing output out of the light receiving element 6 with specified voltages V01, V11 by comparators 8, 9, and the presence of the medium and its double feed is discriminated by a discriminator 12. Thus, any variation in the output of the light receiving element due to each characteristic deterioration of these light emitting and receiving elements can be prevented.
