Abstract

PURPOSE: To stably detect a preferably focusing position with respect to a main object within depth of field by calculating a contrast value from a picture signal, weighing and averaging it and defocus quantities of plural blocks and calculating defocus quantity in a focus detecting area.
CONSTITUTION: A luminous flux passing through two parts over the optical axis of a photographing lens is made incident on divided blocks in the focus detecting area to form two optical images from an object. Two picture signals are compared with each other to calculate a minimum correlation, from which the relative interval between the two picture signals is detected to calculate the defocus quantity of each block. The contrast value of each block is calculated from picture signals. The defocus quantities of plural blocks and the contrast values are weighed and averaged, from which defocus quantity in the focus detecting area is calculated. Thus, the variance of defocus quantities of plural blocks, which is caused by the variance of the brightness of an object, can be reduced, and the focal position of the main object within depth of field can be detected stably.
