The present invention relates to a fluorine-containing ion exchange membrane, and more specifically, to a fluorine-containing ion exchange membrane suitable for use as a diaphragm for electrolysis of water, acid or alkali aqueous solutions, aqueous solutions such as alkali halides or alkali carbonate solutions. . The method for obtaining caustic alkali and chlorine by electrolyzing the above aqueous solution, especially aqueous alkali chloride solution, has recently been replaced by the mercury method from the viewpoint of pollution prevention, and the diaphragm method has been adopted.
Furthermore, a method using an ion exchange membrane has been put into practical use for the purpose of obtaining highly purified and highly concentrated caustic alkali with high efficiency. On the other hand, from the viewpoint of energy saving, it is required in this type of electrolysis to lower the electrolysis voltage as much as possible, and various means have been proposed for this purpose.
Even now, the purpose has not been fully achieved because the voltage reduction effect is not sufficient or the electrolytic cell is complicated. The present inventor continued his research in order to perform electrolysis of aqueous solutions etc. with as low a load voltage as possible, and found that a gas that does not act as an electrode and a Surprisingly, he discovered that the above objective could be fully achieved by using a cation exchange membrane having a liquid-permeable porous layer, and first filed a patent application for this purpose in 1972-
141516, patent application No. 111815, etc. The effect of reducing electrolytic voltage by using a cation exchange membrane having such a porous layer on its surface varies depending on the type, porosity, and thickness of the material forming the porous layer. However, even when the porous layer is formed from a non-conductive material as described below, almost the same voltage reduction effect appears, and when using such an ion exchange membrane, the electrodes are not necessarily in contact with the membrane. It is not necessary to arrange the film at a distance from the film surface, and it is an unexpected phenomenon that the voltage is reduced even when the film is arranged at a distance from the film surface. The substance constituting the porous layer may be conductive or non-conductive, and may be either an inorganic material or an organic material, as long as it does not act as an electrode. However, it is preferable that the ion exchange membrane is made of a material that is resistant to corrosion against the polar fluid used. For example, the above-mentioned patent application 141516/1984, patent application 1983-
111815, etc., various examples include metals, metal oxides, hydroxides, carbides, nitrides, or mixtures thereof, and fluorine-based polymers. Furthermore, regarding the form of the porous layer, it may be a thin layer aggregate of particles of the above-mentioned substances, or it may be a thin layer porous layer formed in advance, such as a cloth made of carbon paper, fluororesin, or a nonwoven fabric. A molded body bonded to the surface of an ion exchange membrane may also be used (see Japanese Patent Application No. 170881/1983, etc.). In addition, the porous layer is
It may be formed as a dense layer on the entire surface of the ion exchange membrane, and particles or particle groups may be bonded to the membrane surface independently from other particles or particle groups, as in Japanese Patent Application No. 56-39620, and the membrane may be porous as a whole. It may be formed in layers, or it may be formed in various patterns such as a lattice shape or a polka dot shape. In order to obtain good gas and liquid permeability, the porous layer formed on the ion exchange membrane surface and having no electrode activity preferably has an average pore diameter of 0.01 to 200μ, particularly 0.1 to 100μ, and a porosity of 10 to 10.
99%, especially 25-95%, and the thickness is preferably 0.01-200μ, particularly 0.1-100μ. As a result of studying means for smoothly and advantageously forming the above-mentioned porous layer on the surface of an ion exchange membrane, the present inventor found that
Porous materials can be created by coating from various non-aqueous solutions or non-aqueous dispersions with film-forming ability of acid-type fluorinated polymers having acid-type functional groups such as carboxylic acid groups, sulfonic acid groups, and phosphoric acid groups. We have found a way to hold the layers together. That is, the present invention provides a fluorine-containing ion exchange membrane having a porous layer that does not function as an electrode on at least one surface of the membrane, in which a powder is added to a non-aqueous liquid containing an acid type fluorinated polymer in a dissolved or dispersed state. A porous layer is formed by applying a dispersed material onto the ion exchange membrane surface and drying it, or a non-aqueous liquid containing an acid type fluorinated polymer in a dissolved or dispersed state is applied. Alternatively, the present invention provides a novel fluorine-containing ion exchange membrane characterized in that a porous layer is formed by laminating an impregnated porous sheet onto the ion exchange membrane surface. In the present invention, specific non-aqueous liquids include those that have the ability to form a film of acid-type fluorinated polymers;
Can be widely adopted. For example, Tokko Akira
A highly polar organic solvent solution of an acid-type fluorinated polymer in which the sulfonic acid group is in a specific form such as acid, sulfonamide, or sulfonate, as described in Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open No. 107949/1982. A highly polar organic solvent solution of a fluorinated polymer having a carboxylic acid side chain as -COOQ (Q is an alkali metal, etc.) as described in the publication, and a carboxylic acid as described in JP-A-55-149336. Examples include solutions of fluorinated polymers having pendant side chains containing ester groups in fluorine-containing organic solvents. For example, CF 2 = CF 2
and CF 2 = CFO CF 2 CF (CF 3 ) O (CF 2 ) 2 SO 2 F ion exchange capacity of 0.8 milliequivalent or more/g The dry resin was converted to acid form - SO 3 H, and dissolved in alcohol. Polymer concentration 20% by weight or less, preferably 15
alcohol solution of less than % by weight or CF 2 = CF 2
CF 2 = CFO (CF 2 ) 3 Ion exchange capacity with COOCH 3
Polymer of 1.0 milliequivalent or more/g dry resin, -
Convert COOLi-type or -COOH-type polymer into higher alkyl esters such as -COOC 12 H 25 from an alcohol solution with a polymer concentration of 20% by weight or less, preferably 15% by weight or less, or carboxylic acid type polymer converted into -COOC 12 H 25 . A solution of a specific fluorine-containing solvent in which the polymer is converted and dissolved in p-trifluorobenzyl chloride and has a concentration of 15% by weight or less, preferably 10% by weight or less, is used. However, in the present invention, it is preferable to use the following specific non-aqueous dispersion rather than the solution with a relatively low concentration as described above. That is, acid-type fluorinated polymers having acid-type functional groups such as carboxylic acid groups, sulfonic acid groups, and phosphoric acid groups can be produced as a highly concentrated aqueous dispersion by emulsion polymerization in an aqueous medium. It is possible to replace the aqueous medium of such an aqueous dispersion with a hydrophilic organic solvent such as alcohol. and,
The reason for this is not necessarily clear, but even when replaced with a hydrophilic organic solvent, the dispersion state is not destroyed, and a non-aqueous dispersion liquid that maintains a stable dispersion state can be obtained. Furthermore, the non-aqueous dispersion thus obtained can be applied to film production, etc., in the same way as an organic solvent solution. For example, an aqueous latex of a carboxylic acid type or sulfonic acid type fluorinated polymer can be separated into an aqueous medium layer and a latex layer with an increased polymer concentration by an appropriate centrifugation operation, and the concentrated latex layer is filled with a hydrophilic organic material. By adding the solvent and repeating the centrifugation operation, the aqueous medium content in the concentrated latex layer is reduced and replacement by the hydrophilic organic solvent is achieved. The acid type fluorinated polymer is dispersed in a hydrophilic organic solvent while maintaining the dispersion state of an aqueous latex. Through this substitution treatment, a non-aqueous dispersion can be obtained that maintains a polymer concentration similar to that in the aqueous latex. See the specification of Japanese Patent Application No. 54-149479 and Japanese Patent Application No. 54-157989. In the present invention, such a non-aqueous dispersion is particularly suitable for forming a film that binds and holds the porous layer to the ion exchange membrane surface. A non-aqueous dispersion of a specific acid type fluorinated polymer as described above uses a fluorinated ethylenically unsaturated monomer and a polymerizable functional monomer having an acid type functional group as a polymerization initiation source. Copolymerize in an aqueous medium by the action of It can be obtained smoothly and advantageously by replacing the aqueous medium of the aqueous dispersion with a hydrophilic organic solvent without destroying the aqueous dispersion. In order to obtain a specific non-aqueous dispersion in the present invention, a polymerizable monomer containing a carboxylic acid group, a sulfonic acid group, a phosphonic acid group, or an acid type functional group convertible to these groups is used as a functional monomer. It is important to use monomers. In consideration of the chlorine resistance, oxidation resistance, etc. of the resulting polymer, such acid type functional monomers () are usually desirably fluorovinyl compounds, and preferred ones have the general formula CF 2 =Cx(CFX 1 ) p ―(OCF 2 CFY) l ―(O) n

Next, examples of the fluorinated ethylenically unsaturated monomer () include ethylene tetrafluoride, ethylene trifluoride chloride, propylene hexafluoride, ethylene trifluoride, vinylidene fluoride, and vinyl fluoride. , preferably the general formula CF 2 =CZZ 1 (where Z, Z 1 are a fluorine atom, a chlorine atom, a hydrogen atom, or -CF 3 )
It is a fluorinated olefin compound represented by
Among these, perfluoroolefin compounds are preferred, and tetrafluoroethylene is particularly preferred. In the present invention, each of the functional monomers () and ethylenically unsaturated monomers () may be used in combinations of two or more, and in addition to these compounds, other monomer compounds may also be used. components, such as olefin compounds () represented by the general formula CH 2 = CR 4 R 5 (where R 4 and R 5 represent a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group having 1 to 8 carbon atoms, or an aromatic nucleus), CF 2

CF 2 = CF - CF = CF 2 , CF 2 = CFO (CF 2 ) 1~4 OCF
Divinyl monomers such as CF 2 and carboxylic acid type functional monomers can be used in combination with one or more other sulfonic acid type functional monomers. Preferred representative examples of the olefin compound () include ethylene, propylene, butene-1,
Isobutylene, styrene, α-methylstyrene,

Particular preference is given to using isobutylene and the like. Also,
For example, by using a divinyl monomer in combination, it is possible to crosslink the resulting film and improve the bond retention strength of the porous layer to the ion exchange membrane surface. In the acid-type fluorinated polymer used in the present invention, the composition ratios of the functional monomer (), the fluorinated olefin compound (), and the olefin compound () and other components are as follows: This is related to the performance of fluorinated polymers, for example when applied as a film to retain the bond of a porous layer, and also to the dispersion state during displacement treatment with a hydrophilic organic solvent from an aqueous dispersion to a non-aqueous dispersion. This is important because it is related to the stability of First, the amount of functional monomer () present in the copolymer is 5 to 40 mol%, especially 10 to 30 mol%.
degree is suitable. In non-aqueous dispersions, it is not always clear why the presence of acid type side chains in the fluorinated polymer is related to the stability of the dispersion state. However, in centrifugal separation of aqueous dispersions, acid-type fluorinated polymers having acid-type functional groups such as carboxylic acid groups and sulfonic acid groups maintain a stable dispersion state in the concentrated latex layer. In fluorinated polymers that do not have functional groups such as carboxylic acid groups or sulfonic acid groups, latex destruction is observed at the same level of concentration. It is thought that it is contributing. Therefore, the remainder of the compound () in the fluorinated polymer is occupied by the () and other compounds (),
The amount of the olefin compound in () is related to the electrical, mechanical properties, chlorine resistance, etc. when formed into a film. When the olefin compound () is used in combination, the molar ratio of the olefin compound ()/fluorinated olefin compound () is preferably 5/
A ratio of 95 to 70/30, particularly 10/90 to 60/40 is preferred. Further, when fluorovinyl ether, divinyl ether, etc. are used in combination, it is suitable to use the proportion of 30 mol % or less, preferably about 2 to 20 mol %, in the copolymer. In the preferred acid-type fluorinated polymer used in the non-aqueous dispersion in the present invention, the copolymerization reaction between the functional monomer and the fluorinated olefin compound is controlled so that the amount of aqueous medium used is Monomer weight ratio
It is preferable to control the ratio to 20/1 or less, preferably 10/1 or less. If the amount of the aqueous medium used is too large, the copolymerization reaction rate will drop significantly and it will take a long time to obtain a high copolymer yield. Also, too much aqueous medium makes it difficult to achieve high molecular weights when high ion exchange capacities are used. Furthermore, the following difficulties are recognized when using a large amount of an aqueous medium. For example, there are disadvantages in operational aspects such as an increase in the size of the reactor and separation and recovery of the copolymer. In such a copolymerization reaction, it is preferable to employ a copolymerization reaction pressure of 7 kg/cm 2 or more. If the copolymerization reaction pressure is too low, the copolymerization reaction rate cannot be maintained at a level that is practically satisfactory, and there are also difficulties in forming a high molecular weight copolymer. In addition, the copolymerization reaction pressure is
It is desirable to select from 50 Kg/cm 2 or less in consideration of the reaction equipment or work operation in industrial implementation. Although it is possible to employ a copolymerization reaction pressure higher than this range, it is not possible to proportionately improve the objects of the present invention. Therefore, in the present invention, it is optimal to select the copolymerization reaction pressure within the range of 7 to 50 kg/cm 2 , preferably 9 to 30 kg/cm 2 . In such a copolymerization reaction, conditions and operations other than the above-mentioned reaction conditions are not particularly limited and may be adopted over a wide range. For example, the optimum copolymerization reaction temperature can be selected depending on the type of polymerization initiation source, reaction molar ratio, etc., but normally, too high or too low a temperature is disadvantageous for industrial implementation. ℃, preferably from about 30 to 80℃. Therefore, as a polymerization initiation source in the copolymerization reaction,
It is desirable to select one that exhibits high activity at the above-mentioned suitable reaction temperature. For example, it is possible to use highly active ionizing radiation even below room temperature, but it is usually more advantageous to use azo compounds and peroxy compounds for industrial implementation, and among them, polymerization initiation The source is disuccinic acid peroxide, benzoyl peroxide, which exhibits high activity at about 20 to 90°C under the copolymerization reaction conditions.
Diacyl peroxides such as lauroyl peroxide and dipentafluoropropionyl peroxide, 2,2 1 -azobis(2-amidinopropane) hydrochloride, 4,4 1 -azobis(4-cyanowalleric acid), azobisisobutyl Azo compounds such as lonitrile, peroxy esters such as t-butylperoxyisobutyrate and t-butylperoxypivalate, peroxydicarbonate such as diisopropyl peroxydicarbonate, di-2-ethylhexyl peroxydicarbonate, etc. carbonate,
These include hydroperoxides such as diisopropylbenzene hydroperoxide, inorganic peroxides such as potassium persulfate and ammonium persulfate, and their redox systems. In the copolymerization reaction, the concentration of the polymerization initiator is 0.0001 to 3% by weight, preferably 0.0001 to 3% by weight based on the total monomers.
It is about 0.001 to 2% by weight. By lowering the initiator concentration, it is possible to increase the molecular weight of the resulting copolymer and maintain a high ion exchange capacity. If the initiator concentration is too high, the tendency to decrease the molecular weight increases, which is disadvantageous to the production of high ion exchange capacity, high molecular weight copolymers. Other surfactants, dispersants, buffers, pH adjusters, etc. used in ordinary aqueous medium polymerization can also be added. In addition, as long as it does not inhibit the copolymerization reaction between the fluorinated olefin compound and the specific functional monomer and has low chain transfer, for example, fluorinated or fluorinated chlorinated solvents known as fluorocarbon solvents can be used. Inert organic solvents such as saturated hydrocarbons can also be added. Therefore, in the copolymerization in an aqueous medium in the present invention, it is preferable to control the concentration of the produced copolymer to 40% by weight or less, preferably 30% by weight or less. If the concentration is too high, problems such as increased stirring load, difficulty in removing heat, and insufficient diffusion of the fluorinated olefin monomer will occur. In the case of a non-aqueous dispersion, the aqueous dispersion obtained as described above is subjected to a substitution treatment with a hydrophilic organic solvent. As for the substitution treatment means, various means can be employed as long as they do not destroy the dispersion state of the aqueous dispersion. For example, a combination of separation of the aqueous medium layer by centrifugation and addition of a hydrophilic organic solvent, a combination of separation of the aqueous medium layer by an electric gradient method or freezing method and addition of a hydrophilic organic solvent, or a combination of separation of the aqueous medium layer by an electric gradient method or freezing method and addition of a hydrophilic organic solvent, or Examples include a method of removing water by evaporation after adding a hydrophilic organic solvent. Usually, it is effective to gradually separate the aqueous medium layer by repeating the steps of separating the aqueous medium layer by centrifugation, adding a hydrophilic organic solvent to the concentrated layer, and subjecting this to centrifugation. can be adopted. Various hydrophilic organic solvents may be used in the above-mentioned substitution treatment. Usually, it is desirable to employ a water-soluble organic solvent for the purpose of smoothly and advantageously displacing and separating the aqueous medium, and preferably one that dissolves 0.5% by weight or more in water at 20°C.
Specific examples include alcohols, ketones, organic acids, aldehydes, and amines.
In addition, hydrophilic organic solvents that are easily compatible with water, such as pyrrolidones, esters, and ethers, may also be used even if their solubility in water is not necessarily high, and a mixed solvent system may also be used. In the operation of adding a hydrophilic organic solvent to the concentrated layer to replace the aqueous medium layer, it is sufficient to repeat the operation depending on the tolerance of water remaining in the non-aqueous dispersion, and usually several times is sufficient. It is. The amount of the organic solvent to be added is not particularly limited, but it is usually 0.5 to 20 parts by weight based on the weight of the polymer. Although the concentration of the non-aqueous dispersion in the present invention can be as high as 60% by weight, it is usually produced at a concentration of 5% to 50% by weight, preferably 10% to 40% by weight. The viscosity of the non-aqueous dispersion can vary from 10 centipoise to 1 million centipoise depending on the concentration of the dispersion and the type of hydrophilic organic solvent used.
In the present invention, for the purpose of forming a good copolymer film and bonding and retaining the porous layer to the surface of the ion exchange membrane, it is usually used in a range of 100 centipoise to 50,000 poise. In the present invention, materials constituting the porous layer are added to a specific non-aqueous solution or dispersion constituting the binder as described above, mixed to form a paste, and then the paste is applied to the surface of the ion exchange membrane to form a coating. forming a porous layer and bonding the layer to the ion exchange membrane surface. Alternatively, a thin porous layer, such as carbon paper or nonwoven fabric, is impregnated or coated with the non-aqueous dispersion and then bonded to the surface of the ion exchange membrane, and then a film is formed to form a porous layer. The thin layers may also be held together. In the present invention, the ion exchange membrane in which a porous layer is formed on the membrane surface has a cation exchange group such as a carboxylic acid group, a sulfonic acid group, a phosphonic acid group, or a phenolic hydroxyl group, preferably a fluorine-containing polymer. Membranes consisting of coalescence are preferred. Such a membrane preferably has a copolymer structure of a vinyl monomer such as tetrafluoroethylene or chlorotrifluoroethylene and a fluorovinyl monomer containing an ion exchange group such as a sulfonic acid, carboxylic acid, or phosphoric acid group. In particular, it is particularly preferable to use polymers having the following structures (a) and (b). where X is F, Cl, H or -CF3 , X1 is X or CF3 ( CF2- ) n , m is 1 to 5,
Y is selected from the following: X, Y, and Z are all 0 to 10, and Z, R f
is selected from -F or a perfluoroalkyl group having 1 to 10 carbon atoms. Also, A is -SO 3 M, -COOM
or can be converted into these groups by hydrolysis.
SO 2 F, -CN, -COF or -COOR, M
represents hydrogen or an alkali metal, and R represents an alkyl group having 1 to 10 carbon atoms. The cation exchange membrane used in the present invention preferably has an ion exchange capacity of 0.5 to 4.0 meq/g dry resin, particularly 0.8 to 2.0 meq/g dry resin. In order to provide such an ion exchange capacity, in the case of an ion exchange membrane made of a copolymer consisting of the polymerized units of (a) and (b) above, the polymerized units of (b) preferably contain 1 to 40 mol%,
In particular, 3 to 25 mol% is suitable. The cation exchange membrane used in the present invention does not necessarily need to be formed from one type of polymer, nor does it need to have only one type of ion exchange group. For example, a laminated membrane of two types of polymers with smaller ion exchange capacity on the cathode side, or an ion exchange membrane with a weakly acidic exchange group such as a carboxylic acid group on the cathode side and a strong acidic exchange group such as a sulfonic acid group on the anode side are also used. can. These ion-exchange membranes are manufactured by various conventionally known methods, and if necessary, these ion-exchange membranes are preferably made of cloth, net, or other woven fabric, non-woven fabric, or metal made of a fluorine-containing polymer such as polytetrafluoroethylene. It can be reinforced with mesh, porous material, etc. Further, the thickness of the ion exchange membrane of the present invention is preferably 20 to 500μ, preferably 50 to 500μ.
Forced to 400μ. When forming a porous layer as described above on the anode side or cathode side of these ion exchange membranes, or even on the membrane surfaces on both electrode sides, the membrane is coated with appropriate ions that do not cause decomposition of the ion exchange groups it has. The form of the exchange group, for example, when it is a carboxylic acid group, it is preferably carried out in the acid or ester type, and when it is a sulfonic acid group, it is preferably carried out in the -SO 2 F type. Either type of electrode can be used in the membranes of the invention. For example, porous electrodes such as perforated plates, mesh or expanded metal are used. As a porous electrode, the major axis is 1.0 to 10 mm, the minor axis is 0.5 to 10 mm, and the wire diameter is
Expanded metal with a pore size of 0.1 to 1.3 mm and a porosity of 30 to 90% is exemplified. Although a plurality of plate-shaped electrodes may be used, it is preferable to use a plurality of plate electrodes with different porosity, with the one with the smaller porosity being used on the side closer to the membrane. As the anode material, platinum group metals, their conductive oxides, or their conductive reduced oxides, etc. are usually used, while as the cathode, platinum group metals, their conductive oxides, or iron group metals, etc. are used. . Examples of platinum group metals include platinum, rhodium, ruthenium, palladium, and iridium, and examples of iron group metals include iron, cobalt, nickel, Raney nickel, stabilized Raney nickel, stainless steel, and alkali-etched stainless steel (Japanese Patent Publication No. 54-19229). (Publication), Ranney Nickelmecki cathode (Unexamined Japanese Patent Publication 1983-
112785) and a Rodan-Nickelmecki cathode (Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open No. 115676/1983). If a porous electrode is used, it can be formed from the material itself forming the anode or cathode. However, when platinum group metals or conductive oxides thereof are used, it is preferable to coat the surface of an expanded valve metal such as titanium or tantalum with these substances. When arranging electrodes in the present invention, the electrodes may be arranged in contact with the ion exchange membrane or may be arranged at appropriate intervals. Rather than firmly pressing the electrode against the ion exchange membrane through the porous layer, the electrode is preferably gently pressed against the porous layer at, for example, 0 to 2.0 kg/cm 2 . In addition, in the case where a porous layer is provided only on one surface of the anode side or the cathode side of the ion exchange membrane in the present invention, the electrode placed on the ion exchange membrane side where no porous layer is provided is also placed on the ion exchange membrane surface. They can be placed in contact or without contact. In the present invention, the electrolytic cell may be of a monopolar type or a bipolar type as long as it has the above configuration. In addition, in the case of electrolysis of an aqueous alkali chloride solution, for example, materials resistant to aqueous alkali chloride and chlorine are used for the anode chamber, such as valve metal and titanium, and for the cathode chamber. Iron, stainless steel, or nickel, which are resistant to alkali hydroxide and hydrogen, are used. The process conditions for electrolyzing an aqueous alkali chloride solution in the present invention include the above-mentioned JP-A-54-
Known conditions such as those in Publication No. 112398 can be employed. For example, an aqueous alkali chloride solution of 2.5 to 5.0 normal (N) is preferably supplied to the anode chamber, and water or diluted alkali hydroxide is supplied to the cathode chamber, preferably at a temperature of 80°C to 120°C and a current density of 10 to 100A/ Electrolyzed at dm 2 . In such a case, heavy metal ions such as calcium and magnesium in the aqueous alkali chloride solution cause deterioration of the ion exchange membrane, so it is preferable to keep them as small as possible. Furthermore, an acid such as hydrochloric acid can be added to the aqueous alkali chloride solution in order to prevent the generation of oxygen at the anode as much as possible. The above description has mainly explained the use of the membrane of the present invention using the electrolysis of aqueous alkali chloride solutions as an example, but it can be similarly applied to the electrolysis of water, halogen acids (hydrochloric acid, hydrobromic acid), and alkali carbonate. Of course. It can also be applied as a diaphragm in various electrolytic synthesis reactions of organic compounds using ion exchange membranes. Next, examples of the present invention will be described in more detail, but it goes without saying that the present invention is not limited by such explanations. Incidentally, parts in the examples are parts by weight unless otherwise specified. Example 1 100 g of ion-exchanged water, 0.2 g of C 8 F 17 COONH 4 , and Na 2 HPO 4 .
0.5g of 12H 2 O, 0.3g of NaH 2 PO 4・2H 2 O,
(NH 4 ) 2 S 2 O 8 was charged at 0.026 g, and then 20 g of CF 2 =
CFO (CF 2 ) 3 COOCH 3 was prepared. After sufficient degassing with liquid nitrogen, the temperature was raised to 57°C, and ethylene tetrafluoride was introduced to 11.0 kg/cm 2 to carry out a reaction.
During the reaction, tetrafluoroethylene was continuously introduced into the system and the pressure was maintained at 11.0 Kg/cm 2 . After 4.5 hours, unreacted tetrafluoroethylene was purged to terminate the reaction.
Further, unreacted CF 2 =CFO(CF 2 ) 3 COOCH 3 was extracted and separated by adding trichlorotrifluoroethane to obtain a stable aqueous dispersion having a concentration of 19% by weight. The composition of CF 2 = CFO (CF 2 ) 3 COOCH 3 in the copolymer is
It was 20.3 mol%. The aqueous dispersion was separated into an aqueous medium and a polymer concentrated layer using a centrifuge.
The aqueous medium layer was removed, the same amount of water was newly added, and the centrifugation operation was repeated again. The operation was repeated three times to remove the electrolyte used in the polymerization. Next, a mixed solvent of N-methylpyrrolidone and methanol (N-methylpyrrolidone/methanol =
2.5/1 weight ratio) was added to prepare a dispersion liquid, and the centrifugation operation was repeated again. Finally, an organic solvent having the above composition was added to the concentrated layer again to produce a non-aqueous dispersion having a copolymer concentration of 20% by weight. To 100 parts of the dispersion, 75 parts of titanium oxide having a particle size of 10 μm or less was added and uniformly kneaded to obtain a paste. The paste was mixed using a bar coater with tetrafluoroethylene and CF 2 =CFO having an ion exchange capacity of 1.43meq/g - dry resin, thickness of 280μ.
It was coated on one side of an ion exchange membrane made of a copolymer of (CF 2 ) 3 COOCH 3 to a size of 20×25 cm. Thereafter, it was dried at a temperature of 120° C. for 30 minutes to form a coating film from the paste, and the porous titanium oxide layer was bonded and held on the ion exchange membrane surface. On the other hand, a titanium oxide porous layer was bonded and held on the other side of the ion exchange membrane in exactly the same manner. The porous layers each have a thickness of 10μ and a porosity of 45%, and are made of titanium oxide.
It contained 1.0mg/ cm2 . The ion exchange membrane was hydrolyzed at 90°C with a 25% by weight aqueous solution of caustic soda, and then used for electrolysis as described below. After covering the anode side of the ion membrane with a solid solution of ruthenium oxide, iridium oxide, and titanium oxide on a titanium expanded metal (minor axis 2.5 mm, major axis 5 mm), scrape off the surface facing the ion exchange membrane side. Place the activated anode on the cathode side
SUS304 expanded metal (minor axis 2.5 mm, major axis 5.0 mm) was soaked in a 52% caustic soda aqueous solution at 150° C.
The cathode, which has been etched at ℃ for 52 hours to have a low hydrogen overvoltage, is brought into pressure contact with the ion membrane at a pressure of 0.01 Kg/ cm2 , and a 5N aqueous solution of sodium chloride is placed in the anode chamber and water is placed in the cathode chamber. 90% by weight while maintaining the sodium chloride concentration in the anode chamber at 4N and the caustic soda concentration in the cathode chamber at 35% by weight.
Electrolysis was carried out at 40 A/dm 2 at 40° C., and a cell voltage of 3.21 volts and a current efficiency of 92% were obtained. When similar electrolysis was performed using an ion exchange membrane without a porous titanium oxide layer, the cell voltage was
At 3.50 volts, the current efficiency was 92.5%. Example 2 In Example 1, CF 2 =CFO(CF 2 ) 3 COOCH 3
