Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain an ω-amino-ω-hydroxymethyl carboxylic acid or its ester for a drug and functional polymer material extremely readily, inexpensively and in high yield, by reducing a readily obtainable α-amino-dicarboxylic acid diester as a raw material with hydrogen in the presence of a specific catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: An α-amino-dicarboxylic acid diester is used as a raw material and reacted with a hydrogen gas in the presence of a copper-containing catalyst preferably in a liquid phase at 50W250°C to give an ω-amino-ω-hydroxymethyl carboxylic acid or its ester. A copper chromite catalyst or a mixture of the copper chromite catalyst and Ba, Ca, Mg, etc., is especially preferable. Further addition of an organic amine to the copper chromite catalyst much improves yield. A trialkylamine, etc., may be cited as the organic amine. Pressure of hydrogen gas in the reduction is preferably 50W250kg/cm2G.
