Abstract

PURPOSE: To display an image in colors without reducing the number of picture elements by emitting three primary colors from a back light synchronously with the write operation to a liquid crystal display panel and repeating this operation in a short time.
CONSTITUTION: An image information write circuit 2 writes image information on a liquid crystal display panel 1. In this case, information is repeatedly written for a certain period as follows; image information of red (R) is written in a period tR and that of green (G) is written in a period tG and that of blue (B) is written in a period tB. Meanwhile, a color designating signal 21 and a timing signal 22 from the write circuit 2 are inputted to a back light 3 to alternately and repeatedly emit light beams essentially consisting of red, green, and blue for a certain period. This light emission is repeated as follows; the light essentially consisting of red is emitted in a period TR and the light essentially consisting of green is emitted in a period TG and the light essentially consisting of blue is emitted in a period TB. Thus, an image is displayed in colors without reducing the number of picture elements.
