Water abstraction is a technique for developing local water supplies such as for livestock, wildlife, rainwater runoff agriculture and domestic use. In ancient times, wilderness farmers cleared the sides of hills and smoothed the land to increase the amount of rainwater flowing down the hill. Cuts in the perimeter carried rainwater to low-lying areas, where it was used to irrigate crops.

Strong winds and direct sunlight tend to destroy the coating material. On pages 115 to 121 of the same document, McBride and Schiflet
report on various types of water intake catchments, including fiberglass-asphalt structures. This fiberglass-asphalt structure consists of sterilized soil covered with glass fiber mat, then coated with a cationic liquid asphalt emulsion, and then coated with a roofing type clay asphalt emulsion. This emulsion is 3~
It needs to be repainted every five years. This surface material is often destroyed by plants, burrowing rodents, and ants. On pages 175 to 191 of the same document, Dedrick reports a water storage system. In addition to the methods described above, he discusses the use of plastic membranes, ethylene propylene rubber and chlorosulfonated polyethylene sheet materials, and hard surface linings such as Portland cement concrete. Rubber coatings must be protected from mechanical damage and weathering.
Hard surface linings are expensive to install and are susceptible to damage from alternating freeze-thaw cycles.

On pages 76 to 83 of the same publication, Plueddemann reports testing under laboratory conditions of various latex polymers and water repellents suitable for soil treatment to improve water uptake. The coating is mixed with a silicone liquid emulsion.
SBR latex mixtures are recommended. Experiments show it works, but it's all laboratory testing. In conclusion, he states that silicone emulsions alone are ineffective, but when mixed with suitable polymer latexes they become extremely effective water repellents.

A technique associated with the development of local water supplies is the use of waterways or water pipes to transport water from a source to a given location. Of course, the water source must be located sufficiently high above the designated location so that the water flows at a sufficient velocity to deliver the required amount. Channels, water pipes, and irrigation canals vary in construction, from trenches dug into the ground to concrete-lined trenches and masonry water pipes. Lining trenches with concrete is difficult and expensive, so it is primarily restricted to large waterways. In small-scale trenches or water pipes, such as those used in irrigation systems, concrete linings are too expensive to be practical.

Surface trenches, such as those used in irrigation systems, can waste much of the incoming water. Water seeps into the bottom of the wall along the entire length of the trench. The moist soil along the trench allows plants to grow easily, and the transpiration of the plants consumes more water. Plants growing below the surface of the water block the flow of water through the trench, causing water loss through evaporation. The loss of water that occurs during transportation from the source to the point of use is wasteful. Such waste is a serious problem in arid regions, where water sources are severely depleted when it comes to replenishing losses during transportation.

Describes how to construct suitable means for directing, transporting, or storing water. This method uses a water-impermeable silicone elastomer coated cloth to line the surface of a depression suitable for conducting, transporting, or storing water. The silicone elastomer has a modulus such that the covering cloth is sufficiently flexible so that the covering cloth conforms to the contour of the depression when placed within the depression. If it is necessary to use multiple pieces of cloth, adjacent ends of the covering cloth are joined at seams. The ends of the covering cloth are then secured around the depressions to hold the covering cloth in place. Preferably, the seams are bonded using an atmospherically curable silicone elastomer composition. The coated cloth can be manufactured, for example, industrially in a factory, ie as a pre-coated cloth. Alternatively, it is also possible to create a covering cloth near the location of the depression. In the latter case, the cloth is placed on a convenient surface in the depression and then coated with a liquid silicone elastomer composition that is curable at atmospheric conditions. After coating, the coating cloth is cured and then transferred to a depression and placed within the depression. If multiple pieces of coated cloth are used, the adjacent ends are preferably adhered at the seam by a liquid silicone elastomer composition that cures at room temperature. In this alternative method, the liquid silicone elastomer composition used to coat the cloth and bond the seam is preferably an aqueous silicone emulsion. A preferred silicone elastomer composition for factory precoated cloth seam joints is a caulk.

The method of the invention is particularly suitable for the construction of means suitable for channeling or collecting water where the reliability and safety of the liquid water-tight covering cloth covering depressions is a critical issue. Cover integrity may be a critical issue where the location of the depression is extremely difficult to access and maximum longevity of the completed structure is required. Another example is a reservoir in an extremely dry region where water loss through leakage cannot be tolerated.
Yet another example is the lining of a pond that contains contaminated liquids without leaking out.

The coated cloth is manufactured by a process in which a silicone elastomer is applied to the cloth to produce a coating that is free of leakage defects and is impermeable to water. Specific methods include calendering (coating) a layer of conventional silicone rubber onto the cloth, or dip coating several layers of a silicone rubber dispersion or emulsion onto the cloth. Such operations, carried out by skilled personnel and under well-controlled conditions, produce coated cloths of very high quality, ie without any number of defects. In cases where perfect reliability is not required, such as the lining of irrigation ditches, more practical construction methods are described herein as an alternative.

The silicone elastomers used to coat the cloth are of the types known to be suitable for coating cloth; for example, high consistency gum-based compositions, solvent dispersions, and water-based emulsions. Such compositions are commercially available. The silicone elastomer is applied to the cloth using any known cross-coating method appropriate to the composition used. An example is where a thermosetting high viscosity gum base composition containing an organic peroxide is calendered onto a cloth and then cured. Another example is nicecoating low viscosity liquid based compositions using the well known platinum catalyzed reaction between alkenyl groups on silicon and hydrogen groups on silicon as the oxidation mechanism. This nice-coated cloth can be cured by passing it through a hot air oven. Both solvent-based dispersions and water-based emulsions can be dip coated onto cloth and cured by passing through a hot air oven. The properties of the cloth coated, the silicone elastomer used, and the coating method used can all be varied widely, subject to critical considerations of impermeability and flexibility of the final product. The prefabricated covering cloth must have sufficient flexibility to conform to the contours of the depression when placed in position as a covering over the surface of the depression.

The flexibility of the covering cloth depends on the thickness and weave of the cloth and the modulus of the elastomer used. The lower the modulus of the cured elastomer, the more flexible the covering cloth will be. The thinner the cloth and the thicker the elastomeric coating, the greater the flexibility of the coated cloth. The cloth may be coated on one or both sides, or completely impregnated. Cloths coated on only one side are usually more flexible than cloths coated on both sides.

The size of the water collection portion 20 is determined by the amount of suitable land available and the area required to collect the desired amount of water. The greater the amount of water desired, the greater the area required. The lower the expected precipitation, the greater the area required. This area has a gentle slope so that the water flows down the collection area and into the water channel to a predetermined destination. The predetermined reach may be a water tank or pond for storing water, or it may be an irrigation system for distributing water to the crop.

FIG. 2 is a cross-sectional view of water collection portion 20 taken along line 2--2 in FIG. The direction of inclination is indicated by arrow 24. A soil barrier 23 is erected to help direct the flow of water into the waterway. The barrier is built high enough to contain the maximum amount of water expected to be present at any one time. In snowy regions, barriers can also help trap snow before it melts. In areas with porous soils, covering cloth 3 is used to prevent water from collecting in the catchments, flowing down, and percolating into the soil instead of flowing through water channels.
1 exists. Furthermore, the covering cloth also serves to prevent water catchments and channels from being destroyed by long-term weathering and by the influence of vegetation growing in the area.

The upper end of the covering cloth is buried in the soil for fixation. Water flowing down the slope flows over the buried cloth ends, over the covering cloth surface, and is directed by the barrier into the water channel. Covering cloth lining catchment areas, barriers, and waterways prevents water loss through soil infiltration and prevents erosion of catchments and waterways by running water.

The depressions used in the method of the invention must have a conforming shape to channel or contain the necessary water. Of course, the depression for transporting water must be sloped in the direction of the required water flow. The amount of slope is selected so that the water flow does not reach excessive velocities. It is desirable to remove all vegetation in this area and smooth the cleared ground to a practical extent. A smooth surface, such as sand or soil, allows for a smooth covering cloth that maximizes water flow and minimizes water retention. Moreover, the smooth surface under the covering cloth facilitates the layout of the covering cloth and the fixing of the seams of the cloth pieces.

The covered depressions can be used for newly constructed structures such as water collection areas, transmission channels, irrigation ditches, reservoirs, etc.
It may be a lake, terrace, or such structure, or it may be a pre-existing structure. For example, a depression may be an irrigation trench that is used without a lining, or an irrigation trench whose lining has deteriorated, e.g., been destroyed or cracked, leaving holes that leak water. It may also be a concrete lined moat. Unlined irrigation trenches waste a significant amount of water, and the amount of water distributed at the tip of the trench can be reduced by 50% of the water flowing into the trench.
It may drop to about %. Soil surfaces, whether newly created or not, should be smoothed and treated as described above. The surface covered by the coating cloth is such that contact with that surface will not damage the final coating.

If the surface of the catchment confinement area is impermeable soil or rock, it is not necessary to completely cover the area with a smooth layer of fine sand or soil as described above. Since the surface is already suitable for water collection, it may not be necessary to completely cover the surface of that area with the covering cloth. The only action needed would be to erect a barrier at the lower edge of the catchment area to channel the water into the waterway.

The flexibility of the coating cloth used can be varied to best suit the depression being coated. If the depression is a large area without sharp corners or abrupt changes in profile, the covering cloth does not need to be as flexible as is required in areas with such abrupt changes in profile. For example, if an irrigation trench or ditch is approximately 30 cm wide and 30 cm deep, the covering cloth must be completely flexible so that it will sag into the trench under its own weight and cling to the underlying surface. Will. In large trenches with a width of 3 or 4 m and a depth of 1 or 2 m with a gently sloping surface, a more rigid covering cloth can be used as it easily follows the contour of the depression. The flexibility of the covering cloth depends on the thickness and weave of the cloth and the modulus of the elastomer used. The lower the modulus of the cured elastomer, the more flexible the covering cloth will be. The thinner the cloth and the thinner the elastomeric coating, the more flexible the coated cloth will be.

FIG. 6 shows one method of creating a seam. The pieces of covering cloth 31 are arranged on the prepared surface so that their ends meet. The joint is then coated with a silicone elastomer composition 32 that is curable under atmospheric conditions to make it impermeable to liquid water. Any silicone elastomer composition that is low enough in viscosity to be applied to the joint, cures at atmospheric conditions, and adheres to the coating cloth is effective in this method. A preferred silicone elastomer composition is a caulking material that is sold in tubes for storage. It is used extruded onto the joint and then cured under atmospheric conditions to form a strong seal.

Liquid silicone elastomer compositions based on solvent dispersions of silicone elastomer compositions that cure at room temperature when exposed to the atmosphere are also effective. Such systems, which harden when exposed to moisture in the air, are disclosed in U.S. Pat. No. 3,189,576 to Sweet (issued June 15, 1965) and U.S. Pat.
issue (issued August 1, 1967),
Both patents show the production of silicone elastomer compositions that cure at atmospheric conditions and may be liquids in the form of solvent dispersions. The dispersion is applied over the seam as shown in Figure 6 and allowed to dry and harden. Other useful silicone elastomer compositions are silicone elastomer emulsions. A joint is formed as shown in FIG. 6, and then the emulsion is sprayed, brushed or rolled onto the joint and allowed to dry. It is also possible to apply one or more coatings to obtain a sealed joint that is impermeable to liquid water.

Yet another method of creating seams is shown in FIG. The pieces of covering cloth 31 are arranged on the prepared surface so that their ends meet. A small piece of uncoated cloth 35 is placed over the seam and the uncoated cloth 35 is impregnated with a liquid silicone elastomer composition 36 to adhere the impregnated cloth to each piece of underlying coated cloth. The uncoated cloth can be impregnated by first coating the coated cloth in the joint area with a layer of liquid silicone elastomer composition. If the uncoated cloth used is thin enough or porous enough, a dry cloth is placed over the joint, then a liquid silicone elastomer composition is applied over the cloth sufficiently to impregnate it, and It can be adhered to the underlying membrane. Any liquid silicone elastomer composition can be used so long as it is liquid enough to impregnate the uncoated cloth, adheres to the membrane, and cures under atmospheric conditions.

Another method of gluing overlapping seams, such as that shown in FIG. 9, is to use a covering cloth with a pressure sensitive adhesive applied along one end of the covering cloth. The pressure sensitive adhesive is applied to the ends of the covering cloth by conventional equipment for applying such applications. A removable release sheet is used on the pressure sensitive adhesive layer to prevent sticking when the coated cloth is rolled or folded for storage. Suitable pressure sensitive adhesives are commercially available. Pressure sensitive adhesives based on silicone polymers are preferred because they adhere well to silicone elastomer coated cloths and have a long service life. Because the adhesive is applied onto the cloth at the factory, it is possible to produce a coat of greater uniformity and higher quality than is typically found with methods that apply adhesive to seams in the field.

In order for the covering cloth to line catchment areas and water channels and function properly, the covering cloth must be anchored to the underlying ground at least at the outer, non-bonded ends. Several suitable measures are available, depending somewhat on the catchment area and the surface characteristics of the waterway. For example, if the water catchment area is comprised of compacted, impermeable soil or rock, the ends of the covering cloth can be secured to the underlying surface with a suitable adhesive. Preferred adhesives are silicone elastomer compositions as described above for bonding coated cloth together at seams. The purpose of securing the covering cloth to the surface is to prevent water from flowing under the covering cloth and causing the covering cloth to dislodge from the surface on which it is laid. If it is necessary to construct a barrier, the barrier will usually be constructed of soil or soil at least on the exterior surface. Since such constructions are not impermeable to water, it is necessary to use other methods of securing the covering cloth to their surface.

The simplest method for securing the unjoined ends of the covering cloth to the barrier 23 is shown in FIG.
The covering cloth 31 is placed over the barrier and the end of the covering cloth is positioned on the back side of the barrier. Then bury the ends of the covering cloth under the soil behind the wall. Figure 10 shows a covering cloth 31 for fixing the membrane.
This is an example in which the end of the log is fixed with a rock or log 38.
FIG. 11 shows a covering cloth 31 secured to the back side of the wall by pegs with large tops 39.
Other mechanical fasteners such as staple-type rods are also suitable. Figure 12 shows the fixation of the cloth ends by burying the covering cloth in a small gutter next to the main waterway. Figure 13 shows a method of fixing the ends of covered cloth exposed to water flow, such as the upper end of a catchment constructed to collect water flowing down a mountainside as shown in Figure 1. shows. The upper end of the covering cloth 31 used for lining the irrigation ditch can also be embedded and fixed in such a manner. The water flowing in the irrigation trench is prevented from flowing under the cloth and displacing the cloth. The direction of water flow is arrow 22

The method of the invention provides suitable means for conducting or storing water. This measure is unique because of the properties of the prefabricated covering cloth. This prefabricated covering cloth can be produced with a high degree of reliability. This prefabricated covering cloth can be easily rolled up and transported to the location of the cavity to be lined. This coated cloth is suitable for temperatures below -30°C
Being flexible and resilient at installation temperatures in the range above 0.degree. C., this prefabricated covering cloth can be installed in both winter and summer. This prefabricated covering cloth is particularly useful in this method because it is resistant to high and low temperatures, direct sunlight, air oxidation, and other factors of outdoor exposure. Installation of prefabricated covering cloths according to the method of the invention can be carried out without requiring a high degree of skill or expensive labor.

Many conventional methods used to form water catchment areas are complex and expensive to construct. Methods such as concrete lining, with or without metal reinforcement, are expensive due to the cost of the concrete and reinforcement and the amount of work and equipment required to place and hold the concrete until it hardens. Such linings do not have elasticity and will crack due to temperature changes.
Asphalt is similar, but also requires heavy equipment to heat the asphalt, spread it in place, and then compress it. Asphalt cracks due to temperature changes and is weathered by the sun and oxygen in the air. The use of asphalt emulsions is problematic due to the inability of asphalt to resist temperature changes and weathering effects when used in relatively thin coatings.

The method of the present invention for constructing means suitable for directing, transporting, or storing water is particularly useful in difficult-to-access agricultural areas. If necessary, depressions of the desired shape suitable for channeling, transporting, or storing water can be created with hand tools. Lining this area with prefabricated covering cloth, sealing the seams, and securing the ends of the covering cloth can all be done without expensive heavy equipment. This prefabricated covering cloth is weather resistant so that the structure has a long useful life. A special use is as water intake structures for animals in mountainous areas.

An alternative method is to manufacture a prefabricated covering cloth near the location of the depression. This method of making a prefabricated covering cloth involves placing the cloth on a surface convenient for a depression suitable for channeling, transporting, or storing water, and then applying the covering cloth so that it follows the contours of the depression. Coating the cloth with a liquid silicone elastomer composition that is curable under atmospheric conditions into an elastomer having a modulus that imparts sufficient flexibility to the cloth, and curing the coated cloth to render it impermeable to liquid water. , transfer the cured sheathing cloth to the depression, then place the sheathing cloth into the depression, join the seams of the sheathing cloth, and secure the unjoined ends of the sheathing cloth to form a watertight sheath. consisting in obtaining suitable means for directing, transporting or storing water.

For covering the cloth, a location is chosen that is convenient for the location of the depression and provides easy access to the materials used. For example, in a mountainous area such a location may be a meadow or a road at the foot of a slope on which a depression is located. If the area for coating the cloth is flat, sufficiently smooth, and accessible, the cloth can be easily coated and a high quality coating can be obtained. When using large quantities of silicone elastomer compositions, such as drum quantities, it is easier to transport the coating cloth to a remote area than to transport drums of liquid. First, the coating cloth is lighter than the starting components because it does not contain water or solvents that were present in the composition before curing.

An effective method of coating the cloth is to spread it over a relatively large flat surface and coat it by spraying using an electric spray system. Typically, such systems are powered by a large compressor driven by a garrison or diesel motor associated with the vehicle. It is easier to obtain a uniform coating with a minimum number of defects if the coating is carried out at such a convenient location rather than in a difficult to access depression site. The depression may be located on a mountainside that is covered with trees and bushes, making it difficult to handle the equipment. The site of the depression may be an exposed mountainside that is frequently exposed to strong winds and where uniform coverage is more difficult. After the cloth has been coated and cured, it can be cut into convenient pieces and transported folded or rolled to the site of the depression to be coated.

The means for directing or collecting water consists of a depression lined with a covering cloth that follows the contour of the depression. Adjacent ends are secured by adhesive to join the covering cloth, which may consist of multiple pieces. The unjoined ends around the cross are fixed against movement. The production of covering cloth consists first of all in laying the cloth on a surface convenient for the depression to be lined. The cloth is then coated with a liquid silicone elastomer composition that is curable at atmospheric conditions. The cured elastomeric composition has a modulus that imparts sufficient flexibility to the covering cloth to conform to the contours of the depression when the covering cloth is placed within the depression.

Spread the cloth over a convenient surface for the depression to be lined. This surface must be flat, fairly smooth and clean so that the cloth can be unrolled and rolled up after coating with a minimum of effort and damage. Suitable surfaces are flat fields, open fields, gravel roads, paved roads, parking lots, or buildings with large open floor areas. Depending on the method and material used to coat the cloth, the most suitable location for this coating process will be chosen. When coating the cloth by spraying, it is advisable to choose a location for the coating process where a spray compressor can be brought. When coating large areas requiring the supply of many drum quantities of liquid silicone elastomer composition, the location must permit transportation of such containers. Since the preferred liquid silicone elastomer composition is an aqueous emulsion, when using this composition it is desirable to have access to water for cleaning purposes. Of course, the location must be convenient to the depression to be coated since the coating cloth must be carried to the depression to complete this process.

After spreading the cloth over a surface convenient to the depression to be lined, the cloth is coated with a liquid silicone elastomer composition. This liquid silicone elastomer composition must cure under atmospheric conditions when applied to the cloth. Atmospheric conditions are the temperature and moisture conditions that exist when the cloth is coated. The viscosity of the liquid silicone composition is selected or adjusted so that the composition soaks into the cloth surface, sealing the interstices between the fibers and creating a surface that is impermeable to liquid water. The composition should penetrate into the cloth to firmly bond the cured coating to the cloth. Because the cured cloth must be transferred as the next step in the process, the composition must not completely penetrate into the cloth in sufficient quantities to cause it to stick to the underlying surface. The amount of penetration of the liquid silicone elastomer composition into the cloth during the coating process is a function of the viscosity of the composition, the amount of composition applied, and the thickness and weave of the cloth being coated. For example, the coating cloth 31 of FIG. 6 needs to be coated with a sufficient composition to make the surface impermeable to liquid water. The liquid silicone elastomer composition may be a solvent dispersion or an aqueous emulsion. The composition is applied to the cloth by any suitable method such as brushing, rolling, or spraying. A preferred method is airless spraying, and such equipment is commercially available. Obtaining a uniform coverage of the cloth is facilitated by spraying.
If spray equipment is not available, it is possible to apply by methods such as rolling or brushing, taking care to obtain as uniform a coating as possible without damaging the cloth during application. An advantage of the method of the invention is that it can be carried out without the use of a power supply if necessary.

It is desirable to coat the cloth in at least two coats, with the second coat perpendicular to the first coat. Such a method produces a more uniform coating with less risk of pinholes. The cloth may be coated on one or both sides.

Each time the liquid silicone elastomer composition is applied to the cloth, it is cured by keeping it undisturbed during exposure to atmospheric conditions. When using solvent dispersions, workers should take appropriate precautions to avoid vapors. Silicone elastomer compositions in the form of aqueous emulsions are desirable because they do not generate hazardous vapors during curing and are easy to clean for equipment and personnel.

Specific examples of cloth and elastomeric silicone emulsion combinations that have been used successfully are described.
An elastomeric silicone emulsion having a solids content of 40% by weight and a viscosity of 25 Pa·s at 23°C was sprayed onto a polypropylene nonwoven fabric approximately 1.0 mm thick. The emulsion penetrated into the fibers and sealed them creating an impermeable coating. Solids content is the percent non-volatile material remaining after heating a 2 g sample of the emulsion in a circulating air oven at 150°C for 1 hour. The sample is placed in an aluminum foil pan with a diameter of 60 mm and a depth of 15 mm. An emulsion with a solids content of 67% by weight and a viscosity of 60 Pa·s at 23°C was also found suitable for use with this fiber. More viscous high solids emulsions do not penetrate as deeply into the fibers as they do with thinner materials. A polyester fiber nonwoven having a thickness of 0.2 mm works well in combination with the above emulsion of 40% solids and viscosity of 25 Pa·s. The emulsion is sufficiently liquid to flow into the fibers, resulting in a cloth impregnated with the emulsion. This emulsion is capable of completely circulating through the fibers and reaching the underlying surface to adhere the cloth to that surface. If necessary, an impermeable coating is obtained on the cloth by applying a first coating to the cloth that penetrates into the cloth and then applying a subsequent coating to seal the cloth. The minimum solids content of the emulsion is about 25% by weight based on the total weight of the emulsion.
Preferred formulations that worked effectively are shown in the Examples.

The hydroxyl end-capped polydiorganosiloxanes useful in the aqueous emulsions used in this invention are those that are emulsifiable and impart elastomeric properties to the resulting product after water removal. The best physical properties are obtained when the average molecular weight of the polymer is greater than 50,000. The preferred molecular weight is
It ranges from 200000 to 7000000. The most preferred hydroxylated polydiorganosiloxanes are those made by the anionic emulsion polymerization process described in Findley et al., U.S. Pat. No. 3,294,725, issued December 27, 1966; The patent describes the polymerization process and also shows hydroxyl end-capped polydiorganosiloxanes in emulsions. The anionic surfactants used are preferably salts of surface-active sulfonic acids used in emulsion polymerizations to produce hydroxyl end-capped polydiorganosiloxanes, such as those shown in U.S. Pat. No. 3,294,725, cited above; indicates surface-active sulfonic acids and their salts.

Colloidal silica is an essential ingredient in this preferred emulsion. Without the presence of colloidal silica in the composition, silicone emulsions do not produce a cured film upon drying. Any finely divided colloidal silica that can be dispersed in a silicone emulsion can be used. A preferred form of colloidal silica is available as a dispersion of colloidal silica in water. The preferred amount of colloidal silica is from 15 to 100 parts by weight of polydiorganosiloxane.
50 parts by weight. As the amount of silica increases, the modulus of the cured elastomer increases. Since the coating cloth must be flexible enough to conform to the contours of the depression, the maximum amount of silica that can be used is controlled by this flexibility requirement.

Another ingredient useful for adding to silicone emulsions is fillers other than colloidal silica. Such fillers can be added, for example, to impart a pigmented coloration, such as for use as a coloring agent or as an ultraviolet light screener. Other fillers can be used as extender fillers that can be used to lower the cost per unit of the elastomeric product. The use of fillers other than colloidal silica also affects the modulus of the cured elastomer. As the amount of filler increases, the modulus of the cured elastomer increases. Since these fillers do not normally act as reinforcing fillers, they can be added in large amounts until the modulus is appreciable. Specific examples of fillers other than colloidal silica include carbon black,
Mention may be made of titanium dioxide, clay, aluminum oxide, quartz, calcium carbonate, zinc oxide, mica, and various colored pigments.

Depending on the area of the depression to be covered, the topography of either the location of the covering process or the location of the depression, and the means used to transfer the covering cloth, the covering cloth may or may not be a single piece. Or it may be a plurality of sheets. The appropriate method of transporting the parcel, such as by hand, horse or truck, will depend on the distance between the cloth covering site and the lining depression and the terrain characteristics therebetween.

Then I sealed the lap seams as follows. Both contact surfaces were first coated with a thick coat of the same silicone elastomer emulsion used to coat the cloth. The overlapping ends were then placed together and smoothed to prevent wrinkles. The seams were then left to dry and cure. An additional coat of silicone emulsion was applied over the seams in areas that did not appear fully coated and bonded.
