[Effects] By taking such measures, the following effects are achieved. A digital image signal containing license plate information is differentiated by a differentiation circuit, and then converted into two by a binarization circuit.
The image is converted into a value, scanned in a predetermined window by a feature extraction circuit, and extracted as a window median value, divided into unit images by a compression circuit, and the maximum value is extracted, and the image is compressed. Then, the license plate position in the image is estimated, and the plate frame is cut out by the control means within the estimated limit range. Therefore, compared to converting the original image into a 211 image, it is easier to set the same value, and the amount of image processing can be reduced without reducing the number of features of the license plate. This makes it possible to detect the position of the license plate at high speed. becomes possible.

[Embodiment] FIG. 1 is a block diagram showing the configuration of an embodiment of the present invention. In the figure, a TV camera 10 is installed in a tollgate gate lane of a toll road to take an image of the front of the vehicle. The analog image information captured above is A
The image is converted into a digital multivalued image by the /D converter 11 and supplied to the distributor 12. The distributor 12 distributes the digital multivalued image sent from the A/D converter 11 into two parts: one on the frame memory 13 side and the other on the side of a feature extraction circuit 17, which will be described later. The frame memory 13 is a memory that stores an original image (digital multilevel image). This original image is used for cutting out the plate frame after trying out the beam and estimating the plate location. Reference numeral 14 denotes an input controller, which switches the image input to be supplied to a feature extraction circuit system characterized by a feature extraction circuit 17, which will be described later. The switching contact is switched to the distributor 12 side a during imaging, and a retry is performed. At times, it is switched to the frame memory 13 side. The differentiation circuit 15 horizontally differentiates the original image input from the input controller 14, and has the function of determining and outputting the change in density between the pixel of interest and adjacent pixels. The binarization circuit 16 binarizes the differential image input from the differentiation circuit 15 using a threshold value set by a CPU 20, which will be described later. The feature extraction circuit 17 horizontally scans the differential binary image in a window of a predetermined width, determines the number of 1'' images within the window, and outputs it as the window median value.

In other words, it extracts the state in which "dots with large density changes are lined up horizontally" which is a characteristic of license plates. The compression circuit 18 divides the feature extraction image from the feature extraction circuit 17 into unit images of 16 pixels (horizontal) x 1 pixel (vertical), extracts the pixel with the maximum value from each unit image as a representative point, and extracts the pixel having the maximum value from each unit image. The value is binarized using a predetermined equivalent value. Here, for example, a unit image with a value of 1'' is determined to have a characteristic. The feature buffer 19 is a memory that stores the evaluation matrix of each unit image. The CP LJ 20 performs inspection of the entire vehicle number recognition device, input/output control with external equipment, plate frame cutting processing, two-character recognition processing, and the like. In FIG. 1, 21 is a RAM, 22 is a binary image memory, and 2 is a RAM.

FIG. 2 is a flowchart for explaining the operation of the vehicle number recognition device shown in FIG. The operation of the vehicle number recognition device will be explained below with reference to this flowchart. First, we will focus on extracting features in the horizontal direction of license plates. T
An image of the front of the vehicle captured by the V-camera 10, that is, an analog image signal, is converted into a digital multi-value image signal by the A/D converter 11. This digital multivalued image signal is sent to the feature extraction circuit system side by the distributor 12, and is stored in the frame memory 13 as an original image for retry and plate frame cutting. The differential circuit 15 performs horizontal differentiation (step A). In other words, the density difference between adjacent pixels is determined, and its absolute value is output. The further differentiated image is binarized using a predetermined threshold in the next-stage binarization circuit 16 (step B). At this time, points with a density difference larger than the same value are set as "1", and points smaller than the threshold are set as "O".
Let it be n. Note that the binarization circuit 16 has three types of threshold values, and retry is performed by changing the binarization threshold values. In the license plate part of the image, there is a large difference in density between the characters and other parts, so when differentiation is applied, many points with a high value of "1" appear. Estimation of the location of the license plate is performed by paying attention to the way these points of '°1' are gathered.

For this purpose, the next-stage feature extraction circuit 17 uses the number of "1"s existing in the vicinity (horizontal direction) of each point on the image as information about that point (step C).

The image is divided into unit images by the compression circuit 18 into 16 pixels (horizontal) x 1 pixel, and the maximum value is extracted from each unit image as a representative point and compressed. Furthermore, since this compression is performed using a well-known "maximum value extraction method," the feature amount is not impaired in the license plate portion.

Next, the compressed feature image is binarized using a predetermined threshold (
step E), stored in the feature buffer 19; Among the data stored in the feature buffer 19, a point that is "1" means "a portion in which there are many points with high concentration differences in the vicinity." In other words, it indicates that there is a high possibility that it is part of a license plate.

The reason why many feature points appear in the license plate part in the horizontal feature extraction described above is that the plate contains a character part and a ground part with a significant difference in density. However, there are also parts inside the license plate where horizontal features do not appear.

Note that the symbols shown in the concentration distribution shown in Fig. 3(b) are as shown in Fig. 3(b).
The same symbols correspond to those shown in a). As shown in (b) of the same figure, the lowercase part (a-
a') and the capital letter part (C-c'), the density changes are large, and the middle part (bb') has no characters, so the density change is small. Therefore, even inside the plate, no horizontal feature appears in the middle part between the uppercase and lowercase characters. Therefore, if the feature buffer 19 is searched vertically, the character pattern r+J should appear in the plate portion.

The plate existence position estimation by the CP Ll 20 is performed based on the above-mentioned characteristics. That is, this is done by vertically evaluating the contents of the feature buffer 19 and searching for a "1" pattern. In addition, at that time, it is necessary to consider whether the vertical size of the rN pattern is appropriate for a license plate. For this reason, “

FIG. 5 is a diagram showing a search range when cutting out a plate frame. Since the rN pattern should accurately indicate the length of the plate in the vertical direction, the vertical search range Y is "1".

The horizontal search range X needs to be approximately twice the width of the plate, considering the case where the extracted "i" pattern exists at the left or right end of the plate. In order to cut out the plate frame, the CP IJ 20 first binarizes the original image stored in the frame memory 13 in the aforementioned range and stores it in the binary image memory 22.

FIG. 6 is a diagram showing the threshold range used during binarization. That is, the threshold value is determined for the shaded area 40 by the well-known method of "Automatic Threshold Selection Method Based on Discrimination and Least Squares Criteria" (Paper No. 1982-210 [D-53]). If the "i" pattern is on a license plate, most of the range shown in FIG. 6 would be occupied by the density corresponding to the letters and the density corresponding to the background.
