Description

The present invention relates to a lithium-air secondary battery that uses an ionic liquid as an electrolyte and an ionic gel in which carbon is dispersed as an air electrode and that is reversibly chargeable / dischargeable and has both stability, large capacity, and high rate characteristics.

このエネルギー密度は、従来の炭素/LiMn2O4(または炭素/LiCoO2、炭素/LiFePO4)系統の充電可能なリチウムイオン電池の6倍以上である。
Today, there is a need for the development of large capacity storage batteries for electric vehicles and power stabilization, and there is a great interest in the development of lithium-air batteries as an alternative to next-generation lithium-ion batteries that can serve these purposes. It is sent. This is because the theoretical energy density of lithium-air batteries is much greater than existing storage batteries.
Lithium-air battery has a positive electrode reaction: 2Li + + O 2 + 2e → Li 2 O 2 and a negative electrode reaction: 2Li → 2Li + + 2e in a combination of an oxygen positive electrode and a lithium negative electrode. In total, the reaction 2Li + O 2 → Li 2 According to O 2 , an energy density of 3600 Wh / kg (= capacity 1200 Ah / kg × operation voltage 3.0 V) can be theoretically supplied (Non-Patent Document 1). This energy density is more than six times that of a rechargeable lithium ion battery of the conventional carbon / LiMn 2 O 4 (or carbon / LiCoO 2 , carbon / LiFePO 4 ) system.
Here, the theoretical energy density (3600 Wh / kg) is calculated based on the total mass of lithium and oxygen required, and if inexhaustible oxygen supplied from air can be directly used, lithium -Air cells will have a higher energy density.

In lithium-air batteries currently under study, conventional organic electrolytes are generally used as electrolytes (Non-Patent Documents 2 to 17). This is because commercial lithium ion batteries have excellent voltage characteristics (antioxidation and reducibility) and high lithium ion conductivity. It is diverted to a battery.
However, lithium-air batteries differ in electrochemical reaction from lithium ion batteries. Further, in the lithium-air battery, an open system structure different from the lithium ion battery is adopted because the cathode air electrode takes in oxygen gas.
Due to such a difference, in a lithium-air battery, a conventional organic electrolyte solution (1) reacts with oxygen and decomposes with charge and discharge (Non-patent Document 18), (2) via an air electrode. Volatilizes in the air, (3) dissolves moisture in the air via the air electrode, (4) easily penetrates into the pores of the air electrode, and thus the electronic conduction path required for the air electrode, It is difficult to secure all three passages of the ion conduction passage and the gas diffusion passage, that is, the permeation of the organic electrolyte is necessary for supplying lithium ions into the air electrode. After the electrode pores are completely filled with the liquid electrolyte, there is a great problem that the diffusion of oxygen into the air electrode is thereby inhibited (Non-patent Documents 19 and 20).
Due to these problems, in the conventional lithium-air battery using the organic electrolyte, the organic electrolyte is consumed according to (1), and not only Li 2 O 2 as a product of the discharge reaction, In order to cope with the complicated mechanism that Li 2 CO 3 and the like are generated by the reaction with the organic electrolyte, (2), long-time charging / discharging and long-term storage of the battery are impossible, and (3) In this case, dry oxygen from an oxygen cylinder is used in place of air, which is not suitable for practical use. According to (4), the electrochemical reaction in the air electrode is oxygen dissolved in the organic electrolyte. This results in difficulties such as being based only on gas, and these results in a small battery capacity, poor cycle characteristics, and poor rate characteristics.
For this reason, instead of the conventional organic electrolyte, an electrochemically stable and non-volatile, water-insoluble electrolyte is required, and an electronic conduction path, an ion conduction path, and a gas diffusion path are provided. There is a need for an air electrode having a secured structure.

The present invention provides an electrochemically stable, nonvolatile, water-insoluble electrolyte that replaces a conventional organic electrolyte, and an electronic conduction path, an ion conduction path, and a gas diffusion that replace a conventional air electrode. Lithium-air secondary battery comprising an air electrode having a structure in which three passages are secured, thereby being reversibly chargeable / dischargeable, and having both stability, large capacity, and high rate characteristics The purpose is to provide.

The inventors of the present invention have proposed a three-dimensional passage (hereinafter referred to as a tri-dimensional channel) in which a single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNTs) and a cross-linked network gel (CNG) of an ionic liquid (IL) are continuous with respect to electrons, lithium ions and oxygen. It was found that it can be used as a continuous passage (B, C in FIGS. 1 and 2).
Based on the above findings, the present inventors have found that the above problem can be solved by using an ionic liquid (IL) as an electrolyte and a gel as an air electrode.
Specifically, a negative electrode using a negative electrode material used for a lithium ion secondary battery is used as the negative electrode, and the electrolyte is electrochemically stable, non-volatile, insoluble in water, and non-aqueous ions. The carbon nanotube (or graphene) was prepared by mixing the carbon salt (or graphene or graphite sheet) and the ionic liquid as an air electrode. A lithium-air secondary battery is constructed using an ionic gel in which single (or single layer) graphite sheets are dispersed (FIG. 3).
The ionic gel used in the air electrode of the lithium-air secondary battery has a bundle structure in which carbon nanotubes (or graphene or graphite sheets) are unraveled in the gel in order to realize the large capacity and high rate characteristics of the battery. A single gel (or a single layer) is dispersed, for example, such a gel is a mixture of carbon nanotube (or graphene or graphite sheet) powder and ionic liquid in a certain ratio, and dispersed by ultrasound, It is produced by a method such as polishing, further centrifuging, and drying at 25 ° C.-250 ° C. for 30 minutes to 24 hours.
The lithium-air secondary battery of the present invention provides a lithium-air secondary battery that is reversibly chargeable / dischargeable and has both stability, large capacity, and high rate characteristics. The above-mentioned problems are solved.

In the single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) and ionic liquid (IL) crosslinked network gel (CNG) (hereinafter referred to as SWNGs / IL CNG, or simply CNG) produced by the present inventors, usually. The bundled SWNTs become untangled, increasing the available reactive sites of the SWNTs, and the anchored IL is the electrolyte to the CNG of the electrolyte. Suppresses penetration. In addition, the SWNTs dispersed in this manner are connected to each other by a number of weak physical crosslinks to form SWNGs / IL CNG (B in FIG. 2). As a result, the Li-air battery using SWNTs / IL CNG as the positive electrode ensures a tri-continuous path for the three components of electrons, lithium ions, and oxygen at the positive electrode. Based on the weight of SWNTs and Li 2 O 2 , which is the product of reversible electrochemical reaction between Li and O 2 , 2440 Wh / kg, which shows an unparalleled specific energy value The specific power value of 1660 W / kg was also shown (FIG. 7). Furthermore, by providing a hydrophobic gas diffusion layer on the positive electrode side and mitigating the mixing of H 2 O, a reversible discharge and charge capacity of 10730 mAh / g was obtained even in charge and discharge using the atmosphere ( FIG. 13). This demonstrates the feasibility of a practical Li-air battery by using SWNTs / IL · CNG as an air electrode.

(1) A lithium-air secondary battery using a conventional organic electrolyte is consumed due to decomposition and reaction of the organic electrolyte with oxygen during charge and discharge, and as a product of a discharge reaction. In addition to Li 2 O 2 , derived lithium carbonate salts of organic electrolytes are produced.
On the other hand, in the lithium-air secondary battery of the present invention, after the discharge reaction performed in an oxygen atmosphere, the generated reactant is Li 2 O 2 , and after the charging reaction, the generated Li 2 O that 2 was decomposed, confirmed by X-ray diffraction, thereby, the reaction mechanism, the positive electrode reaction: 2Li + + O 2 + 2e - ⇔Li 2 O 2, the anode reaction: 2Li⇔2Li + + 2e -, in total, the reaction 2Li + O 2 ⇔ Li 2 O 2 , confirming that stable charge / discharge is possible.
(2) Since the conventional organic electrolyte is volatile, the battery cannot be charged / discharged and stored for a long time.
In contrast, the lithium-air secondary battery of the present invention does not volatilize / evaporate at all even if it is left for a long time or charged and discharged for a long time.
(3) Since water in the air can be dissolved in the conventional organic electrolyte, which may deteriorate the battery performance, in order to avoid this, in the lithium-air battery using the conventional organic electrolyte, Dry oxygen from an oxygen cylinder is used.
On the other hand, in the lithium-air secondary battery of the present invention, since the water penetration into the ionic liquid is slight, it can be used for several weeks even if air is used as it is. By using an ionic liquid that does not dissolve any water, this problem should be solved completely.
(4) Lithium-air secondary batteries using conventional organic electrolytes have a small discharge capacity, poor reversibility, and are often unable to be charged, and have poor rate characteristics.
On the other hand, the lithium-air secondary battery of the present invention has better reversibility of the electrode reaction than the conventional lithium-air secondary battery using an organic electrolyte, and also has discharge / charge cycle characteristics. Also, the rate characteristics are excellent, and the capacity reaches about 5 to 10 times the average value of a lithium-air secondary battery using a conventional organic electrolyte.
As described above, in the lithium-air secondary battery of the present invention, the ionic liquid is electrochemically stable, non-volatile, and has low water solubility. It has been confirmed that the performance of the conventional non-aqueous lithium-air secondary battery is greatly improved by acting as an ideal air electrode with an electron conduction path, an ion conduction path, and an air diffusion path secured. .

Hereinafter, the present invention will be described in detail.

As the negative electrode used in the present invention, a negative electrode using a negative electrode material used in a lithium ion secondary battery is used. As such a negative electrode, in addition to a negative electrode containing metallic lithium, a negative electrode made of carbon that can occlude lithium by charging, and the like can be cited.

[C 1 C 2 im] [NTf 2 ] is composed of the following cation 1 and cation 2 anion, and its excellent non-volatility, high hydrophobicity to moisture, high thermal stability and wide electricity Due to its chemical adaptability, it is suitable as an electrolyte for Li-air batteries (Non-patent Document 21).

As the ionic gel used in the present invention, the present inventors designed a single layer nanocarbon tube (SWNTs) and a cross-linked network gel (CNG) of ionic liquid electrolyte (IL).
SWNTs have a well-defined atomic structure, a high ratio of length to diameter (Non-Patent Documents 23, 24) and high electrical conductivity (10 2 -10 3 Scm -1 ) (Non-Patent Documents). 25) Therefore, in the air electrode of the battery of the present invention, it is not only a carrier for the discharge product as in other carbonaceous materials (Non-Patent Documents 2 and 22), but also an electrically conductive path. Considered. SWNTs typically have a highly entangled bundle structure, which limits the effective surface area. In contrast, in the CNG of the present invention, SWNTs are ultrasonically dispersed in an ionic liquid and then polished to be taken into the ionic liquid [C 1 C 2 im] [NTf 2 ]. The entanglement is probably unraveled by a specific interaction that may exist between the cation and the π-electron nanotube surface in [C 1 C 2 im] [NTf 2 ] (Non-patent Document 26). An image of how SWNTs are entangled by polishing is shown in FIG. The SWNTs dispersed in this way are connected to each other by a number of weak physical crosslinks to form SWNTs / IL CNG (B in FIG. 2).

The basic image of the SWNTs / IL CNG formed in this way is shown in FIG.
In FIG. 2B, SWNTs (indicated by filaments) are finely entangled by the π-cation / π-electron interaction with the imidazolium cation [C 2 C 1 im] (indicated by a thin line ellipse), A cross-linked network physical gel is formed. The [NTf 2 ] anion (indicated by a bold ellipse) is attached to the gel, thereby maintaining electrical neutrality. Oxygen fills the entire cross-linked network gel.
The function of the SWNTs / IL CNG can be described mainly from the following four aspects.
(1) SWNTs serve as sufficient electron paths.
(2) [C 1 C 2 im] [NTf 2 ] IL is attached to SWNTs by molecular ordering and thus interconnects adjacent SWNTs nanowires with advanced lithium in SWNTs / IL · CNG Responsible for ion conduction.
(3) The network structure of the cross-linked SWNTs / IL is not limited by the large surface area of the finely dispersed SWNTs, and by the myriad cracks and pores that probably exist between the oriented [C 1 C 2 im] cations. Providing oxygen diffusion channels that must not be lost.
(4) Assuming that SWNTs / IL · CNG is saturated with IL after strong centrifugation in its manufacturing process, further penetration of IL electrolyte into CNG can be suppressed.
In this way, instead of the conventional three-phase electrochemical interface in the air electrode, SWNTs / IL · CNG has a three-dimensional network of electron, ion and oxygen passages extended throughout, ie, “electron, A three-dimensional tricontinuous passage of ions and oxygen is formed.
In the above example, carbon nanotubes are used as the carbonaceous material constituting the net-like ionic gel cross-linked with the ionic liquid, but graphene or graphite sheets can be used instead of carbon nanotubes.

Next, the action of the air electrode using the CNG of the present invention will be described using A and C in FIG. 2 in comparison with the electrode in the air electrode using a conventional carbonaceous material.
FIG. 2A is an air electrode using a conventional carbonaceous material, and the three-phase interface reaction is limited by dissolved oxygen contained in the electrolyte filled between the carbon particles.
On the other hand, C in FIG. 2 shows CNG at the time of discharge, and lithium ions move from the external ionic liquid electrolyte to the crosslinked network gel (CNG), and are caused by [NTf 2 ] anion attached inside. Harmonized. Oxygen in the bridging network is combined with lithium ions and electrons along the SWNTs and turns into discharge products.

The ionic gel used in the present invention is prepared by, for example, mixing a carbon nanotube (or graphene or graphite sheet) powder at a constant ratio in the range of 1 to 50% by weight with respect to the ionic liquid, dispersing with ultrasonic waves, and polishing. Further, it is prepared by a method such as centrifugation and drying at 25 ° C.-250 ° C. for 30 minutes to 24 hours.

In the ionic gel used in the present invention, as described above, the carbon nanotube (or graphene or graphite sheet) powder and the ionic liquid are simply mixed at a certain ratio and dispersed by ultrasonic waves, and then polished. Thus, the tricontinuous passage is sufficiently constructed.
As shown in Example 3-1 to be described later, the SWNTs / IL · CNG of the present invention thus prepared, SWNTs and IL were mixed, and an ordinary mixture obtained by ultrasonic dispersion was used as an air electrode. Comparing the charge and discharge characteristics when used, the discharge capacity of SWNTs / IL · CNG was more than 6 times that of the SWNTs / IL mixture (950 mAh / g) (5930 mAh / g) (FIG. 4).
This clearly shows that the bundling structure of SWNTs is completely dispersed by polishing after ultrasonic dispersion, the tricontinuous passage is sufficiently constructed, and the ability of SWNTs to adapt to discharge products is greatly increased. Provide good electrochemical evidence.

Regarding the discharge product of the battery of the present invention, a powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern of Li 2 O 2 is clearly observed (FIG. 5). After the discharge, after further charging to Li / Li + to 4.0 V, all four strong peaks of Li 2 O 2 observed in FIG. 5 disappear. This is because reversible Li-oxygen reaction Li + O 2 ⇔Li 2 O 2 occurs during charge / discharge in an oxygen atmosphere of a Li-air battery using SWNTs / IL · CNG as an air electrode. It shows that.

In the battery of the present invention using SWNTs / IL · CNG as an air electrode, the hysteresis phenomenon between the discharge and charge voltages is reduced (FIG. 4). That is, the medium potential deviation of 1.07 V at a current density of 200 mA / g observed in the battery of the present invention is clearly lower than the value of about 1.50 V when using a conventional porous carbon support. Further, SWNTs / IL · CNG includes oxygen electrochemical reactions such as perovskite oxide (Non-patent Document 22), Pt / Au (Non-patent Document 27) and α-MnO 2 (Non-patent Document 28). It should also be noted that no catalyst exists to facilitate the process. Therefore, a large part of the above-mentioned improvement in the efficiency of electrical energy in the charge / discharge process is thought to be the contribution brought about by the configurational characteristics of SWNTs / IL • CNG.

FIG. 6 shows a stepwise current density from 500 to 2000 mA / g SWNT of oxygen-atmospheric pressure, Li-air battery using SWNTs / IL · CNG of the present invention as an air electrode in Example 3-2 described later. The test result when it is made to charge / discharge with is shown. According to FIG. 6, the Li-air battery using SWNTs / IL · CNG of the present invention as an air electrode maintains a useful flat discharge curve that is continuous even when the current density is increased in an oxygen atmosphere. Show. Even at a high current density of 2000 mA / g, a discharge capacity of 2020 mAh / g is still obtained. Until now, the majority of studies on Li-air batteries have limited the current density to 200 mA / g carbon (Non-Patent Documents 28 and 29). Even if the rate characteristic was studied, it was limited only to the discharge process (Non-patent Document 30). However, batteries using SWNTs / IL · CNG maintained a shocking charge / discharge coulombic efficiency of 64% at a current density of 2000 mA / g in an oxygen atmosphere. This is the highest rate capability in Li-air batteries to the best of our knowledge. This indicates that a new structure called “three-dimensional tricontinuous passage of electrons, ions and oxygen” is beneficial not only for the reduction of oxygen but also for the generation process of oxygen.

When a Li-air battery having SWNTs / IL · CNG of the present invention as an air electrode is discharged in a low current region of 0 to 200 mA / g, a flat about similar to acetylene black (Non-Patent Documents 28 and 29) is obtained. A discharge curve of 2.70-2.50 V was observed (FIG. 4). In general, charge transfer is a rate limiting process at low current densities. However, as the current density increases, the transfer of materials, including lithium ions and oxygen, becomes the main rate limiting process.
As a complex solid-liquid-gas heterogeneous reaction, the reaction rate of Li + O 2 ⇔Li 2 O 2 is significantly affected by the unit interface area. In conventional carriers such as acetylene black, the construction of the interface region inevitably depends on the penetration of the electrolyte solution to provide lithium ions, and the available oxygen is also dissolved oxygen near the interface region. Limited to molecules. For this reason, it is difficult to charge and discharge at a high rate in a battery using a conventional carrier such as acetylene black.
On the other hand, in SWNTs / IL · CNG, [C 1 C 2 im] [NTf 2 ] attached to the surface of the nanotube by π-cation π interaction is a special extension of the same IL solution in the electrolyte into the CNG. Can be considered. By occupying [C 1 C 2 im] [NTf 2 ] attached to SWNTs, further permeation of electrolyte into CNG can be suppressed, but lithium ion migration is attached to SWNTs upon receiving potential It is kept smooth via [C 1 C 2 im] [NTf 2 ]. At the same time, CNG is a microporous solid gel that provides an extended migration space for oxygen from the outside, which diffuses along the surface of SWNTs and ILs in the CNG, lithium ions And coalesce with electrons. As a result, the interfacial region is expanded to the entire SWNTs / IL / CNG network, and thus, in the Li-air battery having the SWNTs / IL / CNG of the present invention as an air electrode, it is high in an oxygen atmosphere. It is thought that the current could be maintained.

By combining the above discharge characteristics and rate characteristics, the specific energy and specific power of the Li-air battery of the present invention using SWNTs / IL · CNG in an oxygen atmosphere can be estimated by integral calculation (FIG. 7). . This calculation is standardized by the total weight of SWNTs and the resulting Li 2 O 2 .
At a discharge current density of 200 mA / g, a specific energy of 2440 Wh / kg, ie about 70% of the theoretical value, was obtained. Here, 2440 Wh / kg is based on the weight of Li 2 O 2 and the catalyst SWNTs. This is about 6 times higher than the theoretical value of about 425 Wh / kg, calculated based on the weight of the electrode active material, based on the reaction of 6C + LiMn 2 O 4 4LiC 6 + Mn 2 O 4 for the lithium ion battery. It is. On the other hand, the specific power at 200 mA / g of the battery of the present invention is lower than 100 W / kg, and the battery of the present invention shows the characteristics of a general Li-air battery at high current and low power at a low current density. It was.
However, as the discharge current density increased, the specific power also increased reliably. At 2000 mA / g, the specific power reached 1660 W / kg, based on the total weight of SWNTs and Li 2 O 2 produced, while a substantial specific energy of 1680 Wh / kg was obtained. These data approximate the requirements of general specific power for electric vehicles (1000-1500 Wh / kg) and specific energy of gasoline (about 1700 Wh / kg) that can be used for automotive applications (Non-Patent Document 31). doing.

Influence of moisture in the air on the lithium-air battery All the above-mentioned characteristics of the Li-air battery of the present invention are in charge and discharge in an oxygen atmosphere. On the other hand, it is known that H 2 O, CO 2 and the like contained in the air lead to deterioration of battery performance in a Li-air battery using a conventional organic electrolyte. Therefore, the influence of H 2 O and CO 2 molecules in the atmosphere (oxygen partial pressure: 0.21 atm; humidity: about 50%) on the Li-air battery using SWNTs / IL · CNG of the present invention as an air electrode. Examined.
As shown in Example 3-3 described later, when a Li-air battery having SWNTs / IL · CNG of the present invention as an air electrode is charged and discharged at 200 mA / g SWNT current density in the atmosphere, it is surprising. In addition, the Li-air battery of the present invention gave a greater discharge capacity in the atmosphere of 10200 mAh / g than operating in oxygen (FIG. 8). On the other hand, in the conventional example using a porous graphene carrier, the discharge capacity in air is much smaller than that in oxygen (Non-patent Document 32). On the other hand, a medium potential deviation (FIG. 8) between the charge and discharge curves of 1.23 V, which is higher than operating in oxygen, is associated with a low concentration of oxygen in the air.
These phenomena, in network formation of the CNG Li 2 O 2 at low oxygen concentration from the air, than when discharging in oxygen, likely to occur and more widely distributed, thereby, rather than 1.23V Although led to a large charge / discharge history, it is presumed that a larger discharge capacity was obtained. The greater capacity provided by use in air is that the interfacial reaction region of CNG extends to the entire CNG network rather than the limited three-phase interface in conventional porous carbon supports. This is considered to be another proof.
The XRD pattern of SWNTs / IL · CNG after the above discharge and charge showed that Li 2 O 2 and LiOH were formed during the discharge process in air (FIG. 9). This indicates that some H 2 O molecules in the air can also penetrate into SWNTs / IL · CNG.
The charge curve in air has a strongly scattering plot after 7260 mAh / g (FIG. 8). At this point, LiOH was formed on the surface of the Li negative electrode (inset of FIG. 8). This is clearly due to the penetration of H 2 O from the air. The unstable charging potential after 7260 mAh / g is considered to be mainly due to this insulation by LiOH. In the air electrode at this time, the LiOH peak generated by the discharge disappeared, but the weak Li 2 O 2 peak remained and the Li 2 CO 3 peak occurred. This is thought to be due to CO 2 contamination from the air.
From the above, it can be considered that the following reactions occur in charging and discharging in the air of Li-air batteries using SWNTs / IL · CNG:
Main reaction (1) 2Li + O 2 ⇔ Li 2 O 2
Main reaction (2) 4Li + O 2 + 2H 2 O ⇔ 4LiOH
Side reaction (1) 2LiOH + CO 2 → Li 2 CO 3 + H 2 O
Side reaction (2) 2Li 2 O 2 + 2CO 2 → 2Li 2 CO 3 + O 2
Even after long-term discharge exceeding 50 hours in air, there is no peak of Li 2 CO 3 in the XRD pattern (FIG. 9), so that the inclusion of H 2 O is caused by Li− using SWNTs / IL · CNG. It is presumed to be the largest one that affects the performance of air batteries. FIG. 10 and FIG. 11 compare the cycle characteristics in an oxygen atmosphere and in the air of a Li-air battery in charge / discharge limited to 1000 mAh / g. In the charging / discharging in the atmosphere, the discharge potential of the Li-air battery starts to increase from the fifth cycle, and gradually two flat portions are formed. The flat part was observed. The flat part rising in the atmosphere remains stable at about 3.0V. This coincides with the discharge potential of a Li-air battery having an alkaline aqueous electrolyte (Non-patent Document 33). It is clear from these results that it is important for further practical use of the Li-air battery of the present invention in the air to remove H 2 O mixed from the atmosphere through the passage of SWNTs / IL · CNG. It shows.

Effects of providing a hydrophobic gas diffusion layer on the air electrode
To examine how the charge / discharge characteristics in the air of the Li-air battery of the present invention are affected by suppressing the mixing of H 2 O from the atmosphere through the SWNTs / IL / CNG passage. A Li-air battery using an air electrode in which a hydrophobic gas diffusion layer is interposed between CNG and carbon paper (CP) current collector ((2) of Example 2) is used. A charge / discharge test (Example 3-4) was performed in the air.
According to the results of the charge / discharge cycle test conducted in the atmosphere at a current density of 200 mA / g SWNT with the discharge state limited to 1000 mAh / g (FIG. 12), the discharge potential was measured for the 10 cycles tested. Meanwhile, a single flat portion corresponding only to the reaction of 2Li + O 2 ⇔Li 2 O 2 was retained. This suggests that the disruption of the discharge potential due to the mixing of H 2 O in the atmosphere is suppressed by adding a hydrophobic gas diffusion layer to the air electrode.
It is considered difficult to completely prevent H 2 O from being mixed with this hydrophobic gas diffusion layer. Nevertheless, a significant improvement in battery performance has been achieved in the atmospheric operation of the Li-air battery of the present invention by mitigating the adverse effects of moisture in the air with the hydrophobic gas diffusion layer. (FIG. 13).
That is, in a charge / discharge test conducted in the atmosphere at a current density of 200 mA / g SWNT , the Li-air battery of the present invention having a hydrophobic gas diffusion layer has a discharge capacity of 10730 mAh / g up to a discharge potential of 2.0 V, and The subsequent fully reversible charging process up to a charging potential of about 4.0 V is shown with a medium potential deviation of 1.17 V (FIG. 13). Thus, by providing the hydrophobic gas diffusion layer on the air electrode, an attractive battery capacity and excellent reversibility of the electrode reaction were obtained even in the atmosphere.

The present invention reveals that SWNTs / IL · CNG have the attractive performance of specific energy, specific power and feasibility of operation in the atmosphere. As a new gel-state electrode, SWNTs / IL · CNG can be further handled, for example, adjusting the nanotube surface with a catalyst, adjusting the H 2 O permeation capacity with additives, and other solvents and Excellent flexibility for detecting compatibility with salts.

Example 1.
Preparation of SWNTs / IL cross-linked network gel (CNG)
SWNTs / IL · CNG was prepared by the previously reported method (Non-patent Document 25). 5 mg of SWNTs (HipcoSuperPure) was dispersed in 0.5 ml of imidazolium ion-based ionic liquid [C 2 C 1 im] [NTf 2 ] (Tokyo Chemical Industry) by ultrasonic dispersion for 30 minutes. The suspension thus prepared was ground in an agate mortar for 20 minutes. By polishing, the viscosity of the suspension of SWNTs / IL gradually increased, and finally a sticky paste was formed. The paste was then transferred to a centrifuge tube and centrifuged at 9100 g for 3 hours. The excess ionic liquid at the top was removed and a black SWNTs / IL crosslinked network gel at the bottom was obtained.
To compare the electrochemical properties of entangled SWNTs and entangled SWNTs, similar suspensions of SWNTs and [C 2 C 1 im] [NTf 2 ] prepared by ultrasonic dispersion are polished Without direct centrifugation at 9100 g for 3 hours, the final SWNTs / IL mixture was obtained.

The Li-air battery having a hydrophobic gas diffusion layer on the air electrode side was assembled using the air electrode in the same manner as in (1) using the air electrode.

Example 3-2.
Charge / Discharge Test of Li-Air Battery of the Present Invention in an Oxygen Atmosphere In the battery of the present invention using CNG as an air electrode in the charge / discharge test in Example 3-1 described above, between the discharge and charge voltages A reduction in hysteresis was observed. That is, the battery of the present invention uses a conventional porous carbon support and has a medium potential deviation of 1.07 V, which is clearly smaller than the value of about 1.50 V normally observed in charge and discharge at the same current density of 200 mA / g. (FIG. 4).
FIG. 5 shows an XRD pattern after the SWNTs / IL · CNG mounted on the carbon paper (CP) current collector used for the above charge and discharge and after the charge. The CP contains 5% by weight of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE).
In the charge and discharge, during discharge, the powder X-ray diffraction of the Li 2 O 2 (XRD) patterns (four strong peaks of Li 2 O 2) was clearly observed (Figure 5). These four peaks disappeared after being charged to 4.0 V with respect to Li / Li + (FIG. 5).
FIG. 6 shows the charge / discharge characteristics when the battery of the present invention using SWNTs / IL · CNG is charged / discharged at a stepwise current density from 500 to 2000 mA / g SWNT at 1 atmosphere of oxygen. . The cut-off voltage was 2.0V when discharging and 4.5V when charging.
According to FIG. 6, the battery of the present invention maintains a flat discharge curve even when the current density increases, and a discharge capacity of 2020 mAh / g can be obtained even at a high current density of 2000 mA / g. Yes.
In addition, the battery of the present invention maintains a charge / discharge coulombic efficiency of 64% at 2000 mA / g.

From the data of the discharge characteristics and rate characteristics obtained in Examples 3-1 and 3-2, the specific energy and specific power in an oxygen atmosphere of a Li-air battery using SWNTs / IL · CNG were integrated. Estimated by calculation. The results are shown in FIG. This calculation is standardized by the total weight of SWNTs and the resulting Li 2 O 2 .
At a discharge current density of 200 mA / g, a specific energy of 2440 Wh / kg, ie about 70% of the theoretical value, was obtained. On the other hand, the specific power was lower than 100 W / kg, and the discharge current density of 200 mA / g showed the characteristics of a general Li-air battery with high energy and low power.
However, as the discharge current density increased, the specific power also increased reliably. At 2000 mA / g, the specific power reached 1660 W / kg, while a substantial specific energy of 1680 Wh / kg was maintained.

Example 3-3.
Charging / discharging test in the air of the Li-air battery of the present invention For the Li-air battery having SWNTs / IL · CNG of the present invention as an air electrode, the atmosphere (oxygen partial pressure: 0.21 atm; humidity: about 50%) The following experiment was conducted to examine the influence of H 2 O and CO 2 molecules.
A Li-air battery using SWNTs / IL · CNG of the present invention as an air electrode was charged and discharged in the atmosphere at a current density of 200 mA / g SWNT . The obtained charging / discharging curve is shown in FIG. The inset in FIG. 8 is an XRD pattern of the surfaces of the Li negative electrode (anode) and the CNG air electrode (cathode) after charging.
The Li-air battery of the present invention gave a greater discharge capacity in air, 10200 mAh / g than operating in oxygen. On the other hand, a medium potential deviation of 1.23 V was observed compared to operating in oxygen (FIG. 8).
FIG. 9 shows the XRD pattern of SWNTs / IL · CNG after the above discharge and charge. The SWNTs / IL / CNG is mounted on a carbon paper (CP) current collector. The XRD pattern in FIG. 9 showed that LiOH was formed with Li 2 O 2 during the discharge process in air. This indicates that some H 2 O molecules in the air can also penetrate into SWNTs / IL · CNG.
The charge curve in air has a strongly scattering plot after 7260 mAh / g (FIG. 8). In order to fully analyze this phenomenon, not only the air electrode but also the XRD pattern of the lithium negative electrode at this point was examined (inset of FIG. 8). LiOH was formed on the surface of the Li negative electrode. This is clearly due to the penetration of H 2 O from the air, and the unstable charging potential after 7260 mAh / g is considered to be mainly due to this insulation by LiOH.
FIG. 10 and FIG. 11 show the cycle characteristics in an oxygen atmosphere and in the air of a Li-air battery in charge / discharge limited to 1000 mAh / g. In the charging / discharging in the atmosphere, the discharge potential of the Li-air battery starts to increase from the fifth cycle, and gradually two flat portions are formed. A flat part was observed. The flat part rising in the atmosphere remains stable at about 3.0V. This coincides with the discharge potential of a Li-air battery having an alkaline aqueous electrolyte (Non-patent Document 33).

Example 3-4.
Charge / discharge test in air of the Li-air battery of the present invention having a hydrophobic gas diffusion layer
In order to investigate whether introducing a hydrophobic diffusion layer between CNG and carbon paper (CP) current collector improves the resistance of the cathode to H 2 O, the following experiment was conducted. went.
FIG. 12 shows the charge / discharge cycle characteristics at a current density of 200 mA / g SWNT in the atmosphere of the Li-air battery of the present invention having a hydrophobic gas diffusion layer when the discharge state is limited to 1000 mAh / g. .
In FIG. 12, the discharge potential retained a single flat corresponding only to the 2Li + O 2 ⇔Li 2 O 2 reaction during the 10 cycles tested. This suggests that the disruption of the discharge potential due to the mixing of H 2 O in the atmosphere is suppressed by the addition of the hydrophobic gas diffusion layer.
FIG. 13 shows a charge / discharge curve of the Li-air battery of the present invention having a hydrophobic gas diffusion layer at 200 mA / g SWNT in the atmosphere. The cut-off voltage was 2.0V when discharging and about 4.0V when charging. Here, the hydrophobic gas diffusion layer is provided between the CP current collector and SWNTs / IL · CNGS.
In FIG. 13, the Li-air battery of the present invention having a hydrophobic layer has a discharge capacity of 10730 mAh / g up to a discharge potential of 2.0V, and a fully reversible charge process up to a charge potential of about 4.0V. Shown with medium potential deviation of 1.17V. Thus, it was observed that by providing the hydrophobic diffusion layer on the air electrode, an attractive battery capacity and excellent reversibility of the electrode reaction can be obtained even in the atmosphere.

The lithium-air secondary battery of the present invention can be reversibly charged and discharged, and has both stability, large capacity, and high rate characteristics, and is used in various applications such as stationary power supplies and automobile batteries. be able to.
