Description

The present invention relates to an image forming apparatus for forming an image by an inkjet method and a control method thereof, and more particularly, to an image forming device for performing recording by a multipass method and a control method thereof.

As an example of an apparatus for recording on various recording media using a recording head having a plurality of recording elements, an ink jet recording apparatus using a recording head having a plurality of ink discharge ports has been conventionally known. It has been. The advantage of the ink jet recording apparatus is that it enables printing of sharp and clear characters mainly using black ink and high-speed recording of high-definition color images mainly using color ink. In addition, the apparatus can be manufactured at a relatively low cost, has a low running cost, and is excellent in quietness.

In general, in an ink jet recording apparatus, a displacement amount of a carriage is sequentially observed by an encoder installed on a carriage on which a recording head is mounted and a scaler provided in parallel with the moving direction of the carriage. Further, by performing carriage movement control based on the observed displacement amount information, high-detail image formation is possible.

The encoder includes a light-emitting side and a light-receiving side, and obtains a change in output signal (rectangular wave) by transmitting light due to the brightness of the scaler. Based on the rectangular signal output from the encoder, a reference pulse is generated by a dedicated system LSI (ASIC) in the printer apparatus. The carriage position information is calculated by counting the reference pulses, and the speed information is calculated by measuring the time between the pulses. Based on the position information and speed information of the carriage, control is performed in a closed loop. This control is called feedback control or servo control.

The servo control detects the speed and position of the carriage at certain time intervals, and increases or decreases the amount of energy applied to the carriage motor driver based on the detected information. That is, since feedback based on past events is applied, more accurate speed / position control can be performed. Furthermore, regarding the generation of the print timing, it is possible to land the ink droplet on the target position on the paper surface by performing feedback control based on the position information detected by the encoder under the condition that the carriage is at a constant speed. .

Next, an image forming method in the ink jet recording apparatus will be described. FIG. 12 is a diagram illustrating an arrangement state of recording head units in a conventional inkjet recording apparatus. This recording apparatus forms an image with CMYK inks that are four basic colors. The recording head unit 1201 is mounted with an ink jet head of each ink color, and performs one printing in the nozzle row direction by one scanning in the main scanning direction.

FIG. 13 is a diagram illustrating an overlapping state of printing by scanning in the sub-scanning direction in the recording apparatus using the recording head illustrated in FIG. Reference numeral 1301 denotes a monochromatic head in the recording head unit 1201 of FIG. The monochromatic head 1301 performs one sub-scan for each main scan, and forms an image on the recording medium 1302 by N main scans. At this time, the feed amount in the sub-scanning direction is 1 / N nozzle height, and an overlapped image is formed by N scans. FIG. 13 shows an example of N = 4, and four areas A, B, C, and D are overlapped by the fourth scan in the main scanning direction. Since the areas A to D shown in FIG. 13 have exclusive dot arrangements, one image is formed without overlapping dot positions.

Here, FIG. 14 shows a process from converting multi-valued image data transferred to the recording apparatus into N-values, converting them into head drive data, ejecting ink from the nozzles, and printing, and the flow is described. To do.

First, multi-value RGB image data transferred from a host computer is stored in the image data storage device 101. From here, data is read for each band (nozzle height required for one scan) and input to the image processing apparatus. An input γ conversion circuit 102 in the image processing apparatus performs input γ conversion for luminance correction on the multi-value RGB data input from the image data storage device 101. Then, the color conversion pre-stage circuit 103 performs RGB → R′G′B ′ color conversion using a multi-value RGB → multi-value R′G′B ′ lookup table. Further, in the color conversion post-stage circuit 104, R′G′B ′ → CMYK color conversion is performed using a multi-value R′G′B ′ → multi-value CMYK lookup table.

Next, in the output γ conversion circuit 105, output γ conversion corresponding to the output density characteristic is performed on the data color-converted to CMYK. Then, the gradation number reduction circuit 1401 converts the multi-value data into N-value data by the error diffusion method (ED) and outputs it to the print control unit 108.

Here, the mask memory 1402 stores data having a complementary relationship that enables 100% dot arrangement by a plurality of scans. The print controller 108 generates head drive data by performing an AND operation on the N-valued image data in the image processing apparatus and the data stored in the mask memory 1402. The head 109 performs printing by discharging ink based on the head drive data.

According to the image forming method described above, an image in a predetermined area is formed as a single image by a plurality of scans (multi-pass), and therefore dots caused by variations in nozzle characteristics such as so-called head deflection. Density unevenness due to landing deviation can be reduced.

In this way, a method of relatively reducing density unevenness by dispersing density unevenness caused by characteristics inherent to the ejection port of the ink jet head on the recording medium is called a multi-pass method.

However, even when printing is performed by the multi-pass method, density unevenness occurs in the output image if the head has a large amount of deviation or a large amount of nozzles are present in a certain amount in one head. Another factor causing density unevenness is a problem that dots smaller than the main droplets of dots, called dot satellites, adhere to the edge portion.

In order to eliminate such density unevenness and output a good image, a method of forming an image using only nozzles that do not generate satellites has been proposed (for example, see Patent Document 1). This method can also be applied to nozzle misalignment. For nozzles with large misalignment, a lower output ratio may be used to form a better output image. Easily guessed.

However, in the above method, an image is formed only by nozzles that do not emit satellites, or an image is formed by only nozzles having a small amount of deflection, so that an unbalance occurs in the usage rate of each nozzle in one head. In this way, when nozzles that are used in a concentrated manner in the head and nozzles that are not used so much are mixed, deterioration of the discharge heater and a change in the wettability between the nozzle constituent material and the ink occur. This change appears as a difference in the discharge amount and the discharge direction, eventually causing density unevenness in the output image and further shortening the head life.

Therefore, a method for making the frequency of nozzle use uniform has been proposed (see, for example, Patent Document 2). In this method, there is a restriction that the maximum difference in the number of nozzles used within a range defined by the gradation pattern must be within two times for the gradation pattern of the systematic dither method. Thereby, it is possible to avoid a decrease in the life of the recording head due to the difference in the usage frequency between the nozzles, which is a problem peculiar to the ink jet recording apparatus.
JP 2007-118300 A Japanese Patent Laid-Open No. 07-232434

However, with the above-described conventional method of uniformizing the use frequency of nozzles, it is not possible to reduce density unevenness due to dot landing deviation caused by head deflection. That is, the conventional method of limiting the nozzles used to eliminate density unevenness due to satellite or head deflection and the method of equalizing the nozzle usage frequency cannot be compatible. Therefore, it has been difficult to achieve both reduction in density unevenness due to dot landing deviation due to head deflection and avoiding density unevenness and head life reduction due to nozzle usage rate imbalance.

SUMMARY An advantage of some aspects of the invention is that it provides an image forming apparatus that realizes the following functions and a control method therefor. That is, in the formed image, both reduction in density unevenness due to dot landing deviation for each nozzle in the recording head and avoidance of density unevenness and head life reduction due to imbalance in nozzle usage rate are achieved.

As a means for achieving the above object, an image processing apparatus of the present invention comprises the following arrangement.

That is, an image processing apparatus for generating recording data used to form an image by scanning a recording head having a plurality of nozzles a plurality of times with respect to the same region on a recording medium, and for each nozzle in the recording head The deviation information obtaining means for obtaining deviation information indicating the degree of dot landing deviation and the density area corresponding to the input image data are the first density area where the density unevenness is likely to occur or the density unevenness is less likely to occur. and the image density determining means for determining whether the second density range, the twist information the twisted information acquisition unit acquires, on the basis of the concentration zone and the determination by the image density determining means, entering-force image data by dividing the density value in the multiple scans, dividing means for generating data for each scan, to N-valued data for each scan produced by said dividing means And N-value conversion means for generating print data for each of the scans, and the division means corresponds to each scan when the image density determination means determines that it is the first density region. An image processing apparatus for generating recording data used to form an image by scanning a recording head having a plurality of nozzles a plurality of times with respect to the same region on the recording medium, wherein each nozzle in the recording head The deviation information obtaining means for obtaining deviation information indicating the degree of dot landing deviation and the density area corresponding to the input image data are the first density area where the density unevenness is likely to occur or the density unevenness is less likely to occur. and the image density determining means for determining whether the second density range, dividing means for generating data for each scanning in the divided and the multiple scans the density value of the input image data, wherein the twist information acquiring means and twisting information but acquired, the image density determined on the basis of the concentration range that is determined by a means, a parameter control means for controlling parameters for gradation number reduction, the parameter Based on, anda gradation number reducing means for reducing the respective number of gradations of the image data divided for each scan by said dividing means, said parameter control means is determined by the image density determining means If the determined density range is determined to be the first density range, the parameter is controlled so as to increase the usage rate of the nozzle corresponding to each scan with a small dot landing deviation, and the image density determination unit When the second density range is determined, the parameter is controlled so as to increase the usage rate of the nozzle corresponding to each scan with a large dot landing deviation .

According to the present invention having the above configuration, in the formed image, density unevenness due to dot landing deviation for each nozzle in the recording head is reduced, and density unevenness and head life reduction due to imbalance in nozzle usage are avoided. It is possible to achieve both.

Hereinafter, the present invention will be described in detail based on preferred embodiments with reference to the accompanying drawings. The configurations shown in the following embodiments are merely examples, and the present invention is not limited to the illustrated configurations.

<First Embodiment>
System Configuration FIG. 1 is a block diagram showing the configuration of the image forming system in this embodiment. In this system, an image is formed by scanning a recording head having a plurality of nozzles a plurality of times in the same area on a recording medium. That is, multi-pass printing is performed by an ink jet method, and the transferred multi-value image data is converted to N-value and converted into head drive data, whereby ink is ejected from the nozzle row in the head.

Hereinafter, the flow of the printing process in this system will be described in detail.

First, multivalued image data transferred from a host computer (not shown) or the like is stored in the image data storage device 101. Data from each band (hereinafter referred to as multi-value RGB data) is read from here and transferred to the image processing apparatus 120.

In the image processing apparatus 120, first, the input γ conversion circuit 102 performs input γ conversion for performing luminance correction on the transferred multi-value RGB data. Then, the color conversion pre-stage circuit 103 performs RGB → R′G′B ′ color conversion using a look-up table for realizing multilevel RGB → multilevel R′G′B ′. Then, the color conversion post-stage circuit 104 performs R′G′B ′ → CMYK color conversion using a look-up table for realizing multilevel R′G′B ′ → multilevel CMYK. Next, the output γ conversion circuit 105 performs output γ conversion corresponding to the output density characteristic on the data color-converted to CMYK.

Then, in the data conversion circuit 106 that is a feature of the present embodiment, density conversion corresponding to the number of pass divisions of the multi-pal method is performed on the multilevel CMYK data after the γ conversion by the output γ conversion circuit 105. For example, when the number of pass divisions = 2 (2 passes), data obtained by multiplying multivalued CMYK data by 0.5 is formed. Further, when the number of pass divisions = 4 (4 passes), data obtained by multiplying multi-valued CMYK data by 0.25 is formed. Here, an example in which the input density is equally divided is shown as an example of density conversion according to the number of pass divisions, but it is not always necessary to divide evenly. In this embodiment, as will be described later, weighting control is performed on the division ratio of the input density based on deviation information indicating the degree of dot landing deviation caused by the characteristic variation of each nozzle corresponding to the nozzle position. .

Next, the gradation number reduction circuit 107 converts multi-value data into N-value data for each pass by an error diffusion method (ED). The N-valued image data is transferred to the print controller 108 (head controller), where it is converted into head drive data. The head 109 prints on a recording medium by ejecting ink from each head based on the head drive data.

The image reading apparatus 110 reads a recording sheet on which a test image based on predetermined deviation detection pattern data is previously formed by the head 109 using a sensor (not shown). Based on the degree of dot landing deviation based on the data read here, the deflection information (the deflection magnification) of each nozzle corresponding to the nozzle position is generated and stored in the deflection information storage unit 111 as the deflection information holding means. Although an example in which the amount of deviation measured in the present system is stored is shown here, the amount of deviation obtained by measurement other than in the present system may be stored.

Data Conversion Circuit Configuration Here, detailed configurations of the data conversion circuit 106 and the gradation number reduction circuit 107 in the image processing apparatus 120 will be described with reference to FIG. Note that the circuit configuration example shown in FIG. 2 shows only the configuration for one ink color and assumes multi-pass 4-pass printing, but the number of passes is 2 or more than 4 passes. The basic operation is the same with respect to printing in the above.

In FIG. 2, reference numeral 201 denotes input image data, which corresponds to a divided print image divided into each ink color by the output γ conversion circuit 105 shown in FIG. Reference numeral 202 denotes an image density determination unit that determines the density range of the input image data 201. A density division control unit 204 determines a pass division coefficient (k1, k2, k3, k4) as a parameter for dividing the input image data 201 for each scan in a plurality of scans. And a density division change processing unit 206. The density division table 205 functions as a parameter holding unit, and is created in advance based on the output density characteristics of the recording medium and the like, and temporary pass division coefficients k1A, k2A, k3A, k4A corresponding to the number of passes (in the case of four passes). ) As an initial parameter. The density division change processing unit 206 is parameter control means for controlling the initial parameters. That is, the temporary pass division coefficients are weighted based on the density region determination result by the image density determination unit 202 and the deviation information held in the deviation information storage unit 111, and the final pass division coefficients k1, k2, k3, and k4 are set. Generate.

A multiplier 210 multiplies the input image data 201 by a pass division coefficient k1 (0 ≦ k1 ≦ 1) determined by the density division control unit 204 in order to generate a first pass recording image. Similarly, reference numeral 211 denotes a multiplier that multiplies the input image data 201 by a pass division coefficient k2 (0 ≦ k2 ≦ 1) in order to generate a second pass recording image. Similarly, 212 and 213 are multipliers for generating the third and fourth pass recording images.

The above image density determination unit 202, density division control unit 204, and multipliers 210 to 213 constitute the data conversion circuit 106.

Reference numeral 230 denotes an N-value conversion unit for reducing the number of gradations of the image signal multiplied by the pass division coefficient by the multiplier 210 in order to generate a first pass recording image (N-value conversion). Similarly, 231, 232, and 233 are N-value conversion units for reducing (N-value) the number of gradations of the image signal multiplied by the pass division coefficients by the multipliers 211, 212, and 213, respectively. These N-value conversion units 230 to 233 constitute the gradation number reduction circuit 107.

Reference numeral 240 denotes a first pass image memory that temporarily records the output of the N-value conversion unit 230 for the first pass before printing. Similarly, 241, 242, and 243 temporarily record the outputs of the N-value conversion units 231, 232, and 233 for the second, third, and fourth passes before printing. 4 pass image memory.

That is, the multi-value input image data 201 is multiplied by the pass division coefficients k1, k2, k3, and k4 by the multipliers 210, 211, 212, and 213, respectively, and then is converted by the N-value conversion units 230, 231, 232, and 233. N-value conversion is performed. As a result, output data for driving the inkjet head is generated and stored in the image memories 240, 241, 242, and 243 for each pass. The output data stored in each of the image memories 240 to 243 forms an image by driving the ink jet head in accordance with the scanning of the carriage on which the ink jet head is mounted, and ejecting ink onto the recording medium.

In the present embodiment, an example is shown in which the images for the first to fourth passes are converted to N-values in the respective N-value conversion units. However, one N-value conversion unit is configured by a plurality of N-value conversion circuits. Thus, it is possible to simultaneously process four pass images.

Pass Division Coefficient Generation Processing Details of processing for generating final pass division coefficients k1, k2, k3, k4 by weighting the temporary pass division coefficients k1A, k2A, k3A, k4A in the density division change processing unit 206 will be described in detail below. Explained. As described above, in the density division change processing unit 206, the temporary area division coefficients k1A, k2A, k3A, and k4A are converted into the density area determination result by the image density determination unit 202 and the deviation information held in the deviation information storage unit 111. Based on the weighting.

Rotating Information First, FIG. 3 shows the concept of correcting information stored in the correcting information storage unit 111. In the figure, reference numeral 301 denotes nozzles arranged in the head by numbers. A table 302 stores nozzle numbers corresponding to the nozzle numbers 301 for each nozzle position and a deflection magnification representing the amount of deflection. A memory 303 stores an average value of deflection magnifications of all nozzles in the head. Here, the deflection magnification is a value representing the amount of deflection when the deflection magnification = 1 in a state where there is no deflection. That is, the greater the deflection magnification, the greater the deflection of the nozzle. It should be noted that the numerical value of the deflection magnification described in FIG. 3 is only an example.

Image Density Determination Processing Next, the density area determination processing in the image density determination unit 202 will be described.

FIG. 4 is a diagram illustrating the relationship between the output density and the input density in a general inkjet image forming apparatus. As can be seen from this figure, the output density is not necessarily proportional to the input density. In FIG. 4, it can be seen that in the low density region 403 where the output density is less than or equal to the density value 401, the output density increases in proportion to the input density. It can be seen that the relationship between the input density and the output density is non-linear in the middle density area 404 between the density value 401 and the density value 402 and linear in the high density area 405 having the density value 402 or more.

Thus, the relationship between the input density and the output density as shown in FIG. 4 is due to the relationship between the dots forming the image and the output density. The reason will be described below.

FIG. 5 is a diagram illustrating an example of pixel grids and dots in an image formed on a recording medium by a general inkjet image forming apparatus, and a print duty. In the figure, a grid with dotted lines represents each pixel, and a circle represents a dot landed on the recording medium. The number on the left side in the figure represents the print duty, and the state in which ink is ejected to all the pixel grids is defined as a print duty of 100%. Note that the dot arrangement for each print duty shown in FIG. 5 is merely an example arranged for easy understanding, and is not necessarily such an arrangement.

As can be seen from FIG. 5, the dot diameter that lands on the recording medium is larger than the size of the pixel grid (pixel pitch). This is because, although the pixel grid is rectangular, the dots soaked into the recording medium are almost circular, it is necessary to completely fill the surface of the recording medium when printing with 100% printing duty. is there. For this reason, at least the size of the minimum circumscribed circle with respect to the pixel grid is required as the dot diameter. However, when actual printing is considered, a control error is included in the mechanical mechanism such as a paper feed mechanism or an inkjet head scanning mechanism. Further, the ink jet head itself includes an error factor associated with ejection. In order to perform stable printing while including these error factors, it is necessary to further increase the dot diameter with respect to the pixel grid so that the occurrence of white streaks due to dot landing errors becomes inconspicuous. . Note that the relationship between the pixel grid and the dot diameter shown in FIG. 5 is merely an example for explanation and does not necessarily have such a ratio.

For the above reasons, the dot diameter shown in FIG. 5 is larger than the pixel grid. Note that since the dot diameter that actually appears on the recording medium differs depending on the combination of the ink and the recording medium, the dot diameter varies depending on the recording medium even if the same ink amount is ejected. In a general ink jet printer, ink is fixed by setting an ink tank in a printer main body, and plain paper, various special papers, and the like are properly used according to the printing purpose as a recording medium. Therefore, in the printer, the dot diameter on the recording medium can be regarded as changing according to the recording medium.

Here, how to fill dots on the recording medium when the print duty is gradually increased when printing with a larger dot diameter on the pixel grid will be described.

In printing with a print duty of 12.5% or 25% as shown in the upper part of FIG. 5, each dot is printed without overlapping with adjacent dots. However, when the print duty is 37.5%, an overlap occurs, and when the print duty is 50%, most of the recording medium is filled with dots.

FIG. 6 shows the relationship between the print duty and the dot coverage on the recording medium in a general ink jet image forming apparatus. In the figure, the horizontal axis represents the print duty, and the vertical axis represents the dot coverage on the recording medium. FIG. 6 shows an example in which the ratio between the pixel grid and the dot diameter is tentatively specified for explanation, and is not based on the ratio in an actual printer. Although depending on the type of recording medium, there is a strong correlation between the coverage of the recording medium due to dots and the output density, so here we changed the output density and based on the coverage of dots on the recording medium, The necessity of density range determination in the embodiment will be described.

As can be seen from FIG. 6, when the printing duty is 50%, the coverage on the recording medium already exceeds 90%. When the print duty exceeds 50%, the remaining space that is not covered is very small. Therefore, no matter how many dots are discharged after that, the dot coverage on the recording medium is not so high. It is shown that it will not rise. Depending on the recording medium, there is a recording medium in which the ink receiving layer on the surface is thickly coated and printing can be performed with a coverage exceeding 100%, and the output density increases according to the printing amount. . However, even with such a recording medium, an increase in output density of 0% to 50% cannot be expected for a printing duty exceeding 50% to 100%.

Although it has been described that there is a strong correlation between the coverage of the recording medium by dots and the output density, the maximum density of the output density is determined by the amount of dots received on the recording medium. Some special paper for inkjet printers has a coating layer that can accept many dots applied to the surface of the recording medium. If such special paper is used, the output density is still high when the coverage exceeds 100%. There are also things. The reason why the output characteristics vary depending on the type of the recording medium is that the output characteristics depend on the amount of ink received by the recording medium, ink bleeding, transmission characteristics, and the like.

Thus, the relationship between the number of dots ejected per unit area (printing duty) and the output density (coverage) on the recording medium is that the dot diameter is larger than the pixel grid, as shown in FIG. Due to this, it is not linear as in FIG.

Based on the above characteristics, the occurrence of density unevenness in a general ink jet printer will be described. First, it is considered that the main cause of density unevenness is that a gap is formed between the dots due to the landing of the dots, and these appear as white streaks. Therefore, if many dots are shot on the recording medium, the density unevenness is difficult to see. Therefore, for example, in the high density region 405 in FIG.

On the other hand, even in the low density region 403 in FIG. 4, the density unevenness is less noticeable than in the middle density region 404. The reason will be described below.

FIG. 7 is a diagram illustrating an example of the behavior of dots themselves due to the landing of dots on a recording medium in a general inkjet image forming apparatus. In the figure, reference numeral 701 denotes a recording example in which dots overlap with a time difference, and reference numeral 702 denotes a recording example in which dots overlap in a short time. When dots are recorded in different passes, there is a difference in the dot recording time between passes, so the dots recorded in the previous pass are fixed in the time until the dots are recorded in the subsequent pass. As shown at 701, the shape of each dot is maintained. However, as shown by reference numeral 702, when dots recorded in the same pass are arranged so as to overlap each other, the dots overlap before the preceding dot is fixed. Recorded above.

Therefore, in the same pass printing, dots having no uniform density unevenness as shown in 703 can be printed in an ideal state where the dots have no landing error. However, since there is actually a landing error, if dots are arranged as shown by 704 due to variations in nozzle units, dots as shown by 705 are formed on the paper surface, resulting in streak unevenness. To do. That is, it is considered that the occurrence of density unevenness depends on the presence or absence of dot overlap.

Therefore, when the output density has a linear relationship with the input density below the middle density area 404 in FIG. 4, it is considered that the dots do not overlap. That is, since it is considered that dot overlap is unlikely to occur in the low density region 403, density unevenness is less noticeable as in the high density region 405.

As described above, in a general inkjet image forming apparatus, there are a density range where density unevenness is easily noticeable and a density range where density unevenness is hardly noticeable. Therefore, in the present embodiment, the image density determination unit 202 performs density area determination processing on the input image data. That is, it is determined whether the density of the input image data corresponds to a low density area 403, a medium density area 404, or a high density area 405 obtained by dividing the entire density area into three, and the determination result is changed to density division. The data is output to the processing unit 206.

In the above description, an example is shown in which the image density determination unit 202 performs area determination based on image density. As described above, since the image density is largely related to the dot density, the image density determination unit 202 may perform the density region determination based on the spatial frequency of the output dot pattern. That is, the case where the spatial frequency peak is equal to or lower than the predetermined value is determined as the low concentration region 403, and the case where the spatial frequency peak is equal to or higher than the predetermined value is determined as the high concentration region 405.

Density Division Ratio Change Processing Hereinafter, the pass division coefficient k1, k2, k3, k4 generation processing in the density division change processing unit 206 will be described in detail. In the density division change processing unit 206, based on the density determination result of the image density determination unit 202 as described above, the density of the input image data is distributed to each nozzle by using the twist information stored in the twist information storage unit 111. Thus, the path division coefficients k1, k2, k3, k4 are generated.

FIG. 8 is a flowchart showing density division ratio change processing in the density division change processing unit 206. Similar to FIG. 2, this process represents a process for only one ink color configuration, and multipass four-pass printing is assumed.

(S101)。   First, as an initial value, a density division ratio correction value Kx required when determining the final pass division coefficient is set (S101).

Next, the large density fluctuation flag is cleared (set to OFF) (S102). Although the details will be described later, the large density fluctuation flag is a flag for determining which of the nozzles with the small deflection amount and the nozzle with the large deflection amount should be increased based on the result of the density region determination.

Then, determination of the image density area (S103, S104) is started. In this embodiment, the density variation large flag is turned on / off depending on which of the density regions 403 to 405 shown in FIG. 4 corresponds to the image density. That is, when the image density corresponds to the medium density area 404, it is considered that the density unevenness is in the first density area where the density unevenness is conspicuous, and the large density fluctuation flag is set to ON (S105). On the other hand, when the density of the image corresponds to the low density area 403 or the high density area 405, it can be considered that the density unevenness is in the second density area where the density unevenness is inconspicuous. That is, the large density fluctuation flag remains off.

Here, although each density area is described as being fixed, the setting of the low density area 403 is greatly affected by the overall deflection in the head. Therefore, it is possible to make the low density region 403 variable by using the average amount of deflection 303 in the head shown in FIG. Further, the high density region 405 may also be made variable depending on the difference in nozzle diameter / pitch, which greatly affects the variation in coverage.

Returning to FIG. 8, next, a nozzle to be used is selected for each pass (S106). That is, the nozzles a to d for the first to fourth passes are determined by selecting the nozzles used in each pass in the 4-pass printing in units of one line. The nozzles a to d selected here are nozzles that perform overlapping printing by four-pass printing to form the same line.

Then, with respect to the determined nozzles a to d for each pass, the corresponding magnifications are obtained from the deviation information storage unit 111, and the nozzles a to d are sorted according to the magnitude of the deviation magnification (S107). Here, it is assumed that the nozzle a, the nozzle b, the nozzle c, and the nozzle d are sorted in the order of increasing deflection magnification. By this sorting, it is possible to classify nozzles having a large deflection amount and nozzles having a small deflection amount.

(S110)。   Next, the provisional pass division coefficient provided from the density division table 205 is changed according to the state (on / off) of the large density fluctuation flag (S108). That is, when the large density fluctuation flag is on, the temporary pass division coefficient is changed so as to reduce the usage rate of the nozzle with a large deviation (S109). When the large density fluctuation flag is off, the deviation is large. The temporary pass division coefficient is changed so as to increase the usage rate of the nozzle (S110).

Specifically, in step S109, the already set density division ratio correction value Kx is subtracted from the provisional pass division coefficients k1A and k2A corresponding to the nozzles a and b having a large deflection amount, and the nozzles c and c having a small deflection amount are subtracted. Add to the temporary path division coefficients k3A and k4A corresponding to d. In step S110, the density division ratio correction value Kx is added to the temporary pass division coefficients k1A and k2A corresponding to the nozzles a and b having a large deflection amount, and the passes corresponding to the nozzles c and d having a small deflection amount. Subtraction is made from the division coefficients k3A and k4A.

As a result, the pass division coefficient is increased so that the usage rate of the nozzle with a large twist increases for an image where density unevenness is not noticeable, and the usage rate of the nozzle with a small twist becomes large for an image where density unevenness is easily noticeable. Is controlled.

As described above, the pass division coefficients are controlled according to the density range of the image, and the final pass division coefficients k1, k2, k3, and k4 are determined. Thus, the final pass division coefficients k1, k2, k3, k4 generated by the density division change processing unit 206 are multiplied by the respective pass images in the multipliers 210 to 213, whereby the first to fourth passes. Recorded images are sequentially formed.

Then, it is determined whether or not all the nozzles have been selected in each pass (S111). If all the nozzles have been selected, the process ends. If there is an unselected nozzle, the process returns to step S106, and each pass Select the next nozzle to use.

In the flowchart of FIG. 8, in steps S109 and S110, the pass division coefficient is simply divided into a set of k1A and k2A and a set of k3A and k4A according to the amount of deviation, and the density division ratio correction value Kx is added. An example of performing subtraction and subtraction is shown. As another method, two density division ratio correction values Kx, Kx1 and Kx2 (Kx1> Kx2) are provided. For example, the change of the density division ratio in step S109 described above is switched stepwise as follows. Also good.

k1=k1A−Kx1
k2=k2A−Kx2
k3=k3A+Kx2
k4=k4A+Kx1
k1 = k1A-Kx1
k2 = k2A-Kx2
k3 = k3A + Kx2
k4 = k4A + Kx1
In the present embodiment, the density division ratio correction value Kx is described as a fixed value. However, the density division ratio correction value Kx may be appropriately changed based on the usage status of each nozzle calculated from the print history. .

As described above, according to the present embodiment, the density division ratio with respect to the used nozzle is controlled according to the density area of the image. As a result, control is performed so that the usage rate of the nozzle having a large deviation increases for an image in which density unevenness is not noticeable, and the usage rate of the nozzle having a small deviation is increased for an image in which density unevenness is easily noticeable. Therefore, as a result, it is possible to achieve both improvement in image quality against density unevenness and improvement in head life due to uniform nozzle usage.

Second Embodiment
Hereinafter, a second embodiment according to the present invention will be described. In the first embodiment described above, an example is shown in which the pass division coefficient is controlled according to the density range of the input image data. However, in the second embodiment, the evaluation value in error diffusion is controlled instead of the density division ratio. It is characterized by.

The image forming system in the second embodiment is the same as the configuration shown in FIG. 1 in the first embodiment described above, and a description thereof will be omitted.

Data Conversion Circuit Configuration FIG. 9 corresponds to FIG. 2 in the first embodiment described above, and details of the data conversion circuit 106 and the gradation number reduction circuit 107 in the image processing device 120 in the second embodiment. It is a block diagram which shows a structure. Similarly to FIG. 2, the configuration shown in FIG. 9 shows only the configuration for one ink color, and assumes four-pass printing in the multi-pass method, but two passes or more passes. The basic operation is the same for printing with numbers.

9, the same components as those in FIG. 2 described above are denoted by the same reference numerals, and the description thereof is omitted. The configuration of FIG. 9 includes an evaluation value control unit 901 that controls an evaluation value of error diffusion instead of the density division control unit 204 in the configuration of FIG. The density division table 205 is used in the same manner as in the first embodiment.

The evaluation value control unit 901 includes an evaluation value table 902 and an evaluation value change processing unit 903 that controls the contents of the table. The evaluation value table 902 functions as a parameter holding unit, and a temporary error diffusion evaluation value (a parameter for reducing the number of gradations) q created in advance based on the output density characteristics of the recording medium is used as an initial parameter. provide. The evaluation value change processing unit 903 is a parameter control unit that controls the initial parameter. That is, the temporary evaluation value q is weighted based on the density region determination result by the image density determination unit 202 and the deviation information held in the deviation information storage unit 111, and final evaluation values q1, q2, q3, and q4 are generated. To do. The N-value conversion units 230 to 233 are controlled by the final evaluation values q1, q2, q3, and q4. That is, in the first embodiment described above, an example in which the pass division coefficient is controlled based on information from the image density determination unit 202 and the deviation information storage unit 111 has been shown, but in the second embodiment, N-value conversion is performed. Control the evaluation value for error diffusion.

Hereinafter, an N-value conversion (reduction in the number of gradations) process using error diffusion in the N-value conversion units 230 to 233 according to the second embodiment will be described with reference to FIG. FIG. 10 is a block diagram showing a detailed configuration of the N-value conversion unit 230. Needless to say, the other N-value conversion units 231 to 233 have the same configuration as that shown in FIG.

In FIG. 10, reference numeral 1000 denotes an input image signal that is a target for reducing the number of gradations, and corresponds to the output of the multipliers 210 to 213 in FIG. Reference numeral 1010 denotes an adder for adding a quantization error, and reference numeral 1015 denotes a signal to which the quantization error is added. A threshold generation unit 1020 generates a threshold used for quantization, 1030 is a quantizer that quantizes an input image signal 1015 including an error using the threshold generated by the threshold generation unit 1020, and 1035 is a quantization. This is an output signal with the number of gradations reduced. Reference numeral 1040 is an evaluation value for performing inverse quantization on the output signal 1035 with the reduced number of gradations, and 1045 is a control signal for controlling the evaluation value. This control signal 1045 is changed according to the output value of the evaluation value table 902 shown in FIG. Reference numeral 1050 denotes an inverse quantizer that performs inverse quantization using the evaluation value 1040 on the output signal 1035 with the reduced number of gradations. Reference numeral 1060 denotes an error as a quantization result for the input image signal 1015 including an error. It is an adder to add. Reference numeral 1065 denotes a quantization error signal, 1070 denotes an error diffusion unit for diffusing the quantization error, 1075 denotes a correction signal based on the diffused error, and 1080 denotes an error buffer.

Usually, the threshold value generated by the threshold value generation unit 1020 is fixed (may be changed to correct texture and dot generation delay), and the quantizer 1030 performs 2 while performing error diffusion on the input image signal 1000. Quantization or N-value conversion (N is an integer of 2 or more) is performed. The binarized or N-valued output signal 1035 is usually inversely quantized by a fixed evaluation value 1040, and the quantization error signal obtained at that time is fed back to the input image signal.

In the second embodiment, by inputting the output signal of the evaluation value table 902 shown in FIG. 9 as the control signal 1045 to the evaluation value 1040, the evaluation is performed based on the information in the image density determination unit 202 and the deviation information storage unit 111. The value is changed.

By controlling the evaluation value in this way, the quantization error generated in the inverse quantizer 1050 is controlled, and the density ratio for each line in each pass, that is, the dot appearance probability for each line can be controlled. .

Evaluation Value Change Processing Hereinafter, the evaluation value change processing in the evaluation value change processing unit 903 will be described in detail. The evaluation value change processing unit 903 controls the N-value conversion of the input image data using the deviation information stored in the deviation information storage unit 111 based on the density determination result of the image density determination unit 202 as described above. The evaluation value is changed according to the nozzle used.

FIG. 11 is a flowchart showing the evaluation value change processing in the evaluation value change processing unit 903. Similar to FIG. 9, this processing represents processing for only one ink configuration, and multipass 4-pass printing is assumed.

(S201)。   First, an evaluation value correction amount Qx necessary for determining a final evaluation value is set as an initial value (S201).

Hereinafter, the processing in steps S202 to S208 and step S211 is exactly the same as the processing in steps S102 to S108 and step S111 shown in FIG.

(S210)。   That is, in the second embodiment, as in the first embodiment, the evaluation value provided from the evaluation value table 902 is changed according to the state (on / off) of the large density fluctuation flag. That is, when the large density fluctuation flag is on, the evaluation value is changed so as to reduce the usage rate of the nozzle having a large deflection amount (S209). When the large density fluctuation flag is off, the nozzle having a large deflection amount is used. The evaluation value is changed so as to increase the rate (S210).

Specifically, in step S209, the already set evaluation value correction amount Qx is added to the evaluation values q1 and q2 corresponding to the nozzles a and b having a large deflection amount, and corresponding to the nozzles c and d having a small deflection amount. Subtract from the evaluation values q3 and q4. In step S210, the evaluation value correction amount Qx is subtracted from the evaluation values q1 and q2A corresponding to the nozzles a and b having a large deflection amount, and the evaluation values q3 and q4 corresponding to the nozzles c and d having a small deflection amount. Add to.

As a result, N-values are used so that the usage rate of nozzles with a large deflection increases for images where density unevenness is not noticeable, and the usage rate of nozzles with a low deflection increases for images where density unevenness is easily noticeable. In this case, the evaluation value is controlled.

As described above, the evaluation value at the time of N-value conversion is controlled according to the density range of the image, and final evaluation values q1, q2, q3, and q4 are determined. The final evaluation values q 1, q 2, q 3, and q 4 generated by the evaluation value change processing unit 903 in this way are used at the time of error diffusion processing for each pass image in the N-value conversion units 230 to 233, thereby The first to fourth pass recording images are formed.

In the flowchart of FIG. 11, in steps S209 and S210, the evaluation value is divided into a set of q1 and q2 and a set of q3 and q4 according to the amount of deviation, and addition and subtraction of the evaluation value correction amount Qx is performed. An example of performing is shown. As another method, two evaluation values Qx1 and Qx2 (Qx1> Qx2) are provided as the evaluation value correction amount Qx. For example, the change of the density division ratio in step S209 described above may be switched stepwise as follows. good. In the following formula, q indicates a normal evaluation value acquired from the evaluation value table 902.

q1=q+Qx1
q2=q+Qx2
q3=q−Qx2
q4=q−Qx1
q1 = q + Qx1
q2 = q + Qx2
q3 = q-Qx2
q4 = q-Qx1
In the second embodiment, the evaluation value correction amount Qx is described as a fixed value. However, the evaluation value correction amount Qx may be appropriately changed based on the usage status of each nozzle calculated from the print history.

As described above, according to the second embodiment, the evaluation value at the N-value conversion is controlled according to the density range of the image, and the appearance probability of the dot for each line corresponding to the nozzle used is controlled. As a result, control is performed so that the usage rate of the nozzle having a large deviation increases for an image in which density unevenness is not conspicuous, and the usage rate of the nozzle having a small deviation is increased for an image in which density unevenness is easily noticeable. . Therefore, as a result, it is possible to achieve both improvement in image quality against density unevenness and improvement in head life due to uniform nozzle usage. That is, also in 2nd Embodiment, the effect similar to 1st Embodiment mentioned above is acquired.

<Third Embodiment>
The third embodiment according to the present invention will be described below.

In the first and second embodiments described above, the example in which the usage rate of the nozzle is controlled based on the image density is shown. However, even if the nozzle usage rate is controlled in this way, the image quality may not be improved depending on the type of image.

For example, in each of the above-described embodiments, it has been described that the usage rate of a nozzle having a large twist is increased because density unevenness is less noticeable for an image having a predetermined density or higher. However, when considering a character image such as text, it is desirable to increase the usage rate of a nozzle with a small twist because it is desired to print sharply at the edge portion. Thus, depending on the type of input image, the methods of the first and second embodiments are not necessarily effective. Therefore, the third embodiment is characterized in that an optimal image formation can be performed for each image by switching the nozzle usage rate control method according to the type of input image.

The image forming system in the third embodiment is the same as the configuration shown in FIG. 1 in the first embodiment described above, and thus the description thereof is omitted.

Data Conversion Circuit Configuration FIG. 15 corresponds to FIG. 2 in the first embodiment described above, and details of the data conversion circuit 106 and the gradation number reduction circuit 107 in the image processing apparatus 120 in the third embodiment. It is a block diagram which shows a structure. Similarly to FIG. 2, the configuration shown in FIG. 15 shows only the configuration for one ink color, and assumes four-pass printing in the multi-pass method, but two passes or more passes. The basic operation is the same for printing with numbers.

15, the same components as those in FIG. 2 described above are denoted by the same reference numerals, and description thereof is omitted. In the configuration shown in FIG. 15, the density division change processing unit 206 corrects the pass division coefficient in the same manner as in the first embodiment described above. The third embodiment is characterized in that a selector 1502 for selecting any value before and after correction by the density division change processing unit 206 is provided in the density division control unit 204. Note that the data attribute of the input image data 201 is input to the selector 1502 as the control signal 1501.

Hereinafter, the density division ratio changing process in the third embodiment will be described in detail.

In FIG. 15, the density division table 205 in the density division control unit 204 is created in advance based on the output density characteristics of the recording medium and the like, as in the first embodiment, a temporary pass division according to the number of passes. Coefficients k1A, k2A, k3A, k4A (in the case of 4 passes) are provided. Hereinafter, in the third embodiment, this temporary pass division coefficient is referred to as a first pass division coefficient.

In the density division change processing unit 206, the first pass division coefficient (temporary pass division coefficient) is held in the density area determination result by the image density determination unit 202 and the deviation information storage unit 111 as in the first embodiment. Weighting is performed based on the twisted information. As a result, second path division coefficients k1B, k2B, k3B, and k4B are generated. The first pass division coefficients k1A, k2A, k3A, and k4A provided from the density division table 205 and the second pass division coefficients k1B, k2B, k3B, and k4B weighted and changed by the density division change processing unit 206 are the selectors. 1502 is input.

The selector 1502 selects one of the first path division coefficients k1A, k2A, k3A, k4A and the second path division coefficients k1B, k2B, k3B, k4B in accordance with the control signal 1501, and the final path division coefficient k1. , K2, k3, k4.

The path division coefficients k1, k2, k3, and k4 determined as described above are output to the multipliers 210, 211, 212, and 213. Similarly to the first embodiment, the multi-value input image data 201 is multiplied by final pass division coefficients k1, k2, k3, and k4 by multipliers 210 to 213, respectively, and then N-value conversion units 230 to 233. The N-value is applied. As a result, output data for driving the inkjet head is generated and stored in the image memories 240 to 243 for each pass, and then the inkjet head is driven to form an image.

Pass Division Coefficient Selection Processing Hereinafter, the first and second pass division coefficient selection processing in the selector 1502 of the third embodiment will be described in detail.

First, the control signal 1501 is a signal having a binary state of on / off, and is output as on when the input image data 201 is a natural image, and off when the input image data 201 is a graphic / text character or the like. . That is, the control signal 1501 is determined according to the data attribute of the input image data 201.

Then, the selector 1502 outputs the second path division coefficients k1B, k2B, k3B, k4B if the control signal is on, and the first path division coefficients k1A, k2A, k3A, k4A if the control signal is off. Is output. That is, the density division change process similar to that in the first embodiment described above is performed only in the case of a natural image or the like, and control is performed so that this density division change process is not performed when printing other graphics / text characters or the like. Is done. Therefore, as with the first embodiment described above, for natural images, the density unevenness can be suppressed by increasing the usage rate of the nozzle having a large twist in the density range where the density unevenness is not noticeable. If it is etc., the usage rate of a nozzle with a small twist can be increased to sharpen the edge.

As described above, according to the third embodiment, it is possible to achieve both suppression of density unevenness in a natural image and sharp expression for characters such as straight lines and text in graphics.

In the third embodiment, an example in which the on / off of the control signal 1501 is switched according to an image attribute such as a natural image or graphics / text has been described. However, the present invention is not limited to this example. For example, the control signal may be turned on as a default state, and the control signal may be turned off only at an edge portion of graphics / text.

In particular, the third embodiment is effective when printing an image having a relatively large character portion on a poster or the like. In this case, in order to express the sharpness of the edge portion of the character, the usage rate of the nozzle with a small twist is increased. On the other hand, the solid portion in the character is less noticeable in density unevenness, so the usage rate of the nozzle with a large twist is increased. To be controlled. Thereby, a greater effect can be obtained in terms of both improvement in image quality and head life.

Note that the method of switching the control according to the data attribute of the input image in the third embodiment is also applicable to the second embodiment described above. In this case, that is, the evaluation value in N-value conversion may be switched according to the data attribute.
