Description

The present invention relates to a dye-sensitized solar cell, and more particularly to a dye-sensitized solar cell having excellent photoelectric conversion efficiency composed of specific metal oxide particles and a dye as a semiconductor electrode.

In recent years, a dye-sensitized solar cell has attracted attention as a solar cell using an organic material instead of a silicon-based solar cell, and research and development have been actively conducted. The operation principle of a general dye-sensitized solar cell is as follows. The sensitizing dye adsorbed on the metal oxide semiconductor electrode absorbs sunlight to generate excited electrons, which are transferred to the metal oxide semiconductor and further connected to the electrode through the transparent conductive film. Move to the counter electrode through the circuit. The electrons that have moved to the counter electrode reduce the electrolytic solution, and the electrolytic solution releases the electrons and reduces the sensitizing dye that is in an oxidized state.

Conventionally known dye-sensitized solar cells use anatase-type porous titanium oxide (TiO 2 ) as metal oxide particles constituting a semiconductor electrode, and anatase-type titanium oxide fine particles are dispersed. The resulting paste is applied onto a conductive substrate, dried and fired to obtain a titanium oxide film. On the other hand, an electromotive force is generated by using a composition having a high conduction band level as the metal oxide particles. It is possible to improve.

For the purpose of improving the electromotive force, the titanium oxide fine particles have a core-shell structure, and a technique for coating a shell having a conduction band level higher than the conduction band level of the core or a multi-structure titanium oxide fine particle having a core-shell structure Techniques in which at least one of the dopants is contained are disclosed (for example, Patent Documents 1 and 2). Although these technologies certainly contribute to the improvement of electromotive force because the conduction band level of metal oxide is higher than that of conventional titanium oxide, there is no particular mention of dyes that are appropriately controlled as the dyes to be adsorbed thereto. As a result, satisfactory photoelectric conversion efficiency has not been achieved.

On the other hand, the role of dyes for dye-sensitized solar cells is a light collection function that allows them to adsorb on the surface of nanotitania particles and absorb light in the visible light region. As dyes achieved with efficiency, cis-bis (isothiocyanato) -bis (2,2'-bipyridine-4,4'-carboxylate) ruthenium (II) called N3, cis-bis (isothiocyanato)-called N719 Bis (2,2′-bipyridine-4,4′-carboxylate) ruthenium (II) bis (tetra-n-butylammonium) (for example, Patent Document 3, Non-Patent Document 1), an indoline-based organic called D-149 Dyes (manufactured by Mitsubishi Paper Co., Ltd.) (for example, Patent Document 4) have been developed, all of which match the conduction band level of a conventional semiconductor electrode using titanium oxide. When these dyes are used in semiconductor electrodes having a conduction band level higher than that of conventional titanium oxide, the photoelectric conversion efficiency may decrease due to the correlation of redox potential. It has been desired to develop a dye that is easily imagined and whose oxidation-reduction potential is appropriately controlled in accordance with a semiconductor electrode having a conduction band level higher than that of conventional titanium oxide.

As described above, in the prior art, the matching of the energy level of the conduction band level of the metal oxide particles and the LUMO energy level of the dye is not necessarily positively controlled. As a result, sufficient photoelectric conversion efficiency has not been obtained.

The present invention is for solving the above-described conventional problems, and its purpose is to improve the electromotive force and further to control the oxidation-reduction potential of the sensitizing dye, thereby increasing the dye conversion with excellent photoelectric conversion efficiency. According to the present invention, it was possible to provide a dye-sensitized solar cell with excellent photoelectric conversion efficiency by improving the electromotive force and further controlling the oxidation-reduction potential of the sensitizing dye.

The present invention will be described in more detail. First, the dye-sensitized solar cell of the present invention will be described with reference to FIG. FIG. 1 is a schematic cross-sectional view showing the basic structure of the dye-sensitized solar cell of the present invention. As shown in FIG. 1, the dye-sensitized solar cell of the present invention includes a conductive substrate 1 and a metal oxide semiconductor electrode composed of a metal oxide 2 having a dye 3 adsorbed on its surface, a charge transfer layer (“ It may be referred to as an “electrolyte layer”) 4, and further has a counter electrode 5. In FIG. 1, e represents an electron, and an arrow represents the flow of the electron.

When constituting the dye-sensitized solar cell of the present invention, it is preferable that the semiconductor electrode, the charge transfer layer and the counter electrode are housed in a case and sealed, or the whole is sealed with a resin.

When the solar cell of the present invention is irradiated with sunlight or electromagnetic waves equivalent to sunlight, the dye 3 adsorbed on the metal oxide 2 is excited by absorbing the irradiated sunlight or electromagnetic waves. Electrons generated by excitation move to the metal oxide 2, then move to the counter electrode 5 through the conductive substrate 1, and reduce the redox electrolyte of the charge transfer layer 4. On the other hand, the dye 3 that has moved the electrons to the metal oxide 2 is an oxidant, but is reduced by being supplied with electrons from the counter electrode 5 via the redox electrolyte of the charge transfer layer 4. At the same time, the redox electrolyte of the charge transfer layer 4 is oxidized and returned to a state where it can be reduced again by the electrons supplied from the counter electrode 5. In this way, electrons flow and the dye-sensitized solar cell of the present invention can be configured.

Next, a manufacturing method of the case where the above-described core-shell particles are applied as oxide particles constituting the semiconductor electrode will be described in detail.

When producing a semiconductor electrode of core-shell particles, a method of forming a semiconductor layer by applying a coating at the stage of dispersion of metal oxide particles and then applying the coating to a substrate, followed by drying and firing, or a core A fine particle dispersion is applied onto a substrate, dried and fired to form a semiconductor layer, and then a coating metal oxide or precursor dispersion is coated onto the semiconductor layer and dried and fired. Examples of the method include shell formation.

Next, the latter method will be described in detail.

Prepare a dispersion containing core fine particles of metal oxide, apply it on a conductive substrate, dry it, and calcinate it in air or inert gas to oxidize the metal on the conductive substrate. A physical semiconductor layer is formed. A semiconductor layer obtained by applying and drying a dispersion on a conductive substrate is composed of an aggregate of metal oxide fine particles, and the particle size of the fine particles corresponds to the primary particle size of the metal oxide fine particles used. Is. Since the metal oxide semiconductor layer formed on the conductive base material has a low bonding strength with the conductive base material and a mutual binding force between the fine particles and a low mechanical strength, this metal oxide fine particle Preferably, the aggregate film is fired to increase mechanical strength and to be a fired product film that is strongly fixed to the substrate.

In the present invention, the semiconductor layer may have any structure, but is preferably a porous structure film (also referred to as a porous layer having voids). Here, the porosity of the metal oxide semiconductor layer is preferably 0.1 to 20% by volume, and more preferably 5 to 20% by volume. The porosity of the metal oxide semiconductor layer means a porosity that is penetrable in the thickness direction of the dielectric, and can be measured by using a commercially available apparatus such as a mercury porosimeter (Shimadzu porer 9220 type). The thickness of the metal oxide semiconductor layer is preferably at least 10 nm or more, and more preferably 100 to 10,000 nm.

From the viewpoint of appropriately adjusting the actual surface area of the semiconductor layer during the firing treatment and obtaining a semiconductor layer having the above porosity, the firing temperature is preferably lower than 1000 ° C, and more preferably in the range of 200 to 800 ° C. preferable.

Next, as a method of forming the shell, a mixed solution of a metal oxide precursor and a dopant source such as magnesium ethoxide is applied or immersed, and further subjected to a firing treatment or the like, so that the metal oxide layer is uniformly formed. A shell containing a dopant can be formed. The metal oxide precursor is a compound containing a metal element constituting the metal oxide of the shell, and examples thereof include titanium tetraisopropoxide. The firing temperature and firing time at this time are not particularly limited and can be arbitrarily controlled.

Here, as a method of forming a metal oxide layer between the semiconductor layer and the shell of the core fine particle, after forming the metal oxide semiconductor layer to be the core fine particle on the conductive substrate, the metal oxide to be the intermediate layer An intermediate layer made of a metal oxide can be formed by applying a precursor of a product to the semiconductor layer, or immersing the semiconductor layer in a precursor solution, and further performing a baking treatment as necessary. . Next, the shell formation described above may be performed.

Specifically, the intermediate layer can be formed by electrochemical treatment using a titanium tetrachloride aqueous solution or titanium alkoxide, which is a precursor of titanium oxide, or a precursor of an alkali metal titanate or an alkaline earth titanate metal. The intermediate layer can be formed by subjecting the semiconductor layer made of core fine particles to surface treatment or baking treatment. The firing temperature and firing time at this time are not particularly limited and can be arbitrarily controlled.

<色素>
<Dye>
Next, the dye according to the present invention will be described.

The dye according to the present invention is represented by the general formula (1), and the LUMO energy level of the dye is −1.60 eV to −0.70 eV. LUMO is a molecule not occupied by electrons. This is the trajectory with the lowest energy among the trajectories (lowest unoccupied molecular orbital).

代表的なソフトウエアとしては、MOPAC93(富士通(株)製、JCPE−P081)や米国Gaussian社製の分子軌道計算用ソフトウェアであるGaussian98(Gaussian98、Revision A.11.4,M.J.Frisch,et al,Gaussian,Inc.,Pittsburgh PA,2002.) In the present invention, the value of the LUMO energy level is a calculated value, and any software can be used as long as it is a semi-empirical molecular orbital calculation using PM3 Hamiltonian, but the structure has been optimized. There must be. Here, the structure optimization is to optimize the coordinates of each atom constituting the molecule so that the molecule is in the most stable state in terms of energy. In this case, the energy grad must be grad <1.0. PM3 Hamiltonian is one of the NDDO approximations used in the semi-empirical molecular orbital method. J. et al. It is an approximation method that has been widely used since P Stewart published in 1989, Vol. 10, No. 209, p. 221 of Journal of the Computing Chemistry. Typical software includes MOPAC93 (manufactured by Fujitsu Ltd., JCPE-P081) and Gaussian 98 (Gaussian 98, Revision A.11.4, MJ Frisch, software for molecular orbital calculation manufactured by Gaussian, USA). et al, Gaussian, Inc., Pittsburgh PA, 2002.) The LUMO value in the present invention is a value calculated by MOPAC93 or Gaussian98.

Gaussian98(Gaussian98、Revision A.11.4,M.J.Frisch,et al,Gaussian,Inc.,Pittsburgh PA,2002.) When MOPAC93 is used, as a keyword to be used, a keyword for structure optimization may be appropriately selected and used in addition to “PM3”, and “EF” is preferably used. When using Gaussian 98 (Gaussian 98, Revision A.11.4, MJ Frisch, et al, Gaussian, Inc., Pittsburgh PA, 2002.), structural optimization should be performed using B3LYP / LanL2DZ as a keyword. The value calculated by is preferable. The hardware used for the calculation of the present invention is not limited as long as semi-empirical molecular orbital calculation can be performed. Specifically, any of a personal computer, a workstation, a supercomputer, and the like may be used.

In general, MOPAC 93 is preferred when calculating organic dyes, and Gaussian 98 is suitable when calculating metal complex dyes. The reason why these calculated values are effective is that there is a high correlation between the calculated values obtained by this method and the experimental values.

In order to contain the redox species in the solid, for example, a method of polymerizing in the coexistence of a monomer that becomes a polymer compound and a redox species, a solid such as a polymer compound is dissolved in a solvent as necessary. Then, the above-mentioned method of adding the redox species can be used. The content of the redox species can be appropriately selected according to the required ion conduction performance.

In the present invention, instead of an ion conductive electrolyte such as a molten salt, a solid hole transport material that is organic or inorganic or a combination of both can be used. The p-type inorganic compound semiconductor for this purpose preferably has a band gap of 2 eV or more, and more preferably 2.5 eV or more.

Further, the ionization potential of the p-type inorganic compound semiconductor is preferably smaller than the ionization potential of the dye-adsorbing electrode from the condition that the holes of the dye can be reduced.

Although the preferable range of the ionization potential of the p-type inorganic compound semiconductor varies depending on the dye used, it is generally preferably 4.5 eV or more and 5.5 eV or less, and more preferably 4.7 eV or more and 5.3 eV or less. .

Moreover, the electrical conductivity of the charge transport layer is preferably 10 −8 S / cm or more and 10 2 S / cm or less, and more preferably 10 −6 S / cm or more and 10 S / cm or less.

For example, in the dye-sensitized solar cell of the present invention shown in FIG. 1, as a method for forming the charge transfer layer 4 between the metal oxide semiconductor electrode (also simply referred to as a semiconductor electrode) and the counter electrode 5, Although not limited, for example, a method in which the semiconductor electrode and the counter electrode 5 are arranged to face each other and the above-described electrolyte solution or various electrolytes are filled between the two electrodes to form the charge transfer layer 4, or on the semiconductor electrode or the counter electrode 5 For example, a method of superposing the other electrode on the charge transfer layer 4 after the charge transfer layer 4 is formed by dropping or coating an electrolyte or various electrolytes on the charge transfer layer 4 can be used.

Further, in order to prevent the electrolyte from leaking out between the semiconductor electrode and the counter electrode 5, the gap between the semiconductor electrode and the counter electrode 5 is sealed with a film or resin as necessary, It is also preferable to store the charge transfer layer 4 and the counter electrode 5 in an appropriate case.

In the case of the former forming method, as the filling method of the charge transfer layer 4, a normal pressure process using a capillary phenomenon due to dipping or the like, or a vacuum process in which the gas phase in the gap is replaced with a liquid phase at a pressure lower than normal pressure is used. it can.

In the latter forming method, microgravure coating, dip coating, screen coating, spin coating or the like can be used as a coating method.

In the wet charge transfer layer, the counter electrode is provided in an undried state and measures for preventing liquid leakage at the edge portion are taken. In the case of a gel electrolyte, there is a method in which it is applied in a wet manner and solidified by a method such as polymerization. In this case, the counter electrode can be applied after drying and fixing.

In the case of a solid electrolyte or a solid hole transport material, a charge transfer layer can be formed by a dry film forming process such as a vacuum deposition method or a CVD method, and then a counter electrode can be provided.

Specifically, it can be introduced into the electrode by techniques such as vacuum deposition, casting, coating, spin coating, dipping, electropolymerization, and photoelectropolymerization. It is formed by evaporating the solvent by heating to an arbitrary temperature.

Further, the conductivity of the charge transfer layer 4 is preferably 1 × 10 −10 S / cm or more, and more preferably 1 × 10 −5 S / cm or more.

《Counter electrode》
The counter electrode according to the present invention can utilize a single-layer structure of a base material having conductivity itself, or a base material having a counter electrode conductive layer on the surface thereof, in the same manner as the conductive base material. In the latter case, the conductive material and the base material used for the counter electrode conductive layer, and the manufacturing method thereof are the same as those of the conductive base material 1 described above, and various known materials and methods can be applied.

Among them, it is preferable to use those having catalytic ability to perform oxidation of I 3− ions and the like and reduction reaction of other redox ions at a sufficient speed. The thickness of the counter electrode conductive layer is not particularly limited, but is preferably 3 nm to 10 μm. When the counter electrode conductive layer is a metal, the thickness is preferably 5 μm or less, and more preferably in the range of 10 nm to 3 μm.

The surface resistance of the counter electrode is preferably as low as possible. Specifically, the range of the surface resistance is preferably 50Ω / □ or less, more preferably 20Ω / □ or less, still more preferably 10Ω / □ or less. .

In the dye-sensitized solar cell shown in FIG. 1 described above, light may be received from either or both of the conductive substrate 1 and the counter electrode 5, so that at least the conductive substrate 1 and the counter electrode 5 are at least. It is sufficient if one is substantially transparent.

From the viewpoint of improving the power generation efficiency, it is preferable to make the conductive base material transparent so that light enters from the conductive base material side. In this case, the counter electrode preferably has a property of reflecting light. As such a counter electrode, glass, plastic or metal thin film on which a metal or conductive oxide is deposited can be used.

The counter electrode can be applied by directly applying, plating or vapor-depositing (PVD, CVD) a conductive material on the above-described charge transfer layer, or by adhering the conductive layer side of a substrate having a counter electrode conductive layer or a conductive substrate single layer. That's fine.

In addition, as in the case of the conductive substrate 1, it is also a preferable aspect to use a metal wiring layer in combination, particularly when the counter electrode 5 is transparent.

The counter electrode is preferably conductive and has a catalytic action on the reduction reaction of the redox electrolyte. For example, glass, a polymer film deposited with platinum, carbon, rhodium, ruthenium or the like, or coated with conductive fine particles can be used.

Next, as a counter electrode, a hole for vacuum depositing platinum on the glass substrate and injecting an electrolyte was provided. The glass substrate having the photosensitive layer and the counter electrode are opposed to each other by using a 25 μm-thick sheet spacer / sealing material (SX-1170-25 manufactured by SOLARONIX) having a 6.5 mm square hole. From the electrolyte injection hole provided in the cathode electrode, tetrapropylammonium iodide, iodine, and t-butylpyridine are mixed in a mixed solvent of acetonitrile: ethylene carbonate having a volume ratio of 1: 4, each concentration is 0.46. A charge transfer layer containing a redox electrolyte dissolved so as to be mol / liter, 0.06 mol / liter, and 0.50 mol / liter is injected, the hole is closed with a hot bond, and the sealing agent is used from above. A cover glass was attached and sealed. An antireflection film (hard coat / antireflection type cellulose film manufactured by Konica Minolta Opto Co., Ltd.) was laminated on the light receiving surface side of the glass substrate having the photosensitive layer to prepare a dye-sensitized solar cell encapsulated cell.

Thus, using the metal oxide semiconductor electrodes AN-01 to 10 and the dye according to the present invention, as shown in Table 1, dye-sensitized solar cells SC-01 to SC-21 were produced.
