Description
The present invention relates to an ink jet head for performing recording on a recording medium by discharging ink by an ink jet method, and an ink jet recording apparatus using the head.
The inkjet recording method disclosed in
A general configuration of a head (inkjet head) used for inkjet recording includes a plurality of ejection openings, a liquid path communicating with the ejection openings, and electric heat that generates thermal energy used to eject ink. The structure which has a conversion element can be mentioned. The electrothermal conversion element includes a heating resistor and an electrode for supplying electric power thereto. By covering the electrothermal conversion element with a protective layer having electrical insulation, insulation between the electrothermal conversion elements is ensured. Each ink flow path communicates with the common liquid chamber. Ink is supplied to the common liquid chamber from an ink tank as an ink reservoir. Then, the ink supplied to the common liquid chamber is guided to each liquid path from here, and is then held by forming a meniscus in the vicinity of the ejection port. When the electrothermal conversion element is selectively driven in this state, thermal energy is generated from the driven electrothermal conversion element. Using this thermal energy, the ink is rapidly heated and foamed by the ink contact portion (heat acting portion) above the electrothermal conversion element. Ink is ejected by the pressure accompanying the foaming.
The thermal action part of such an ink jet head (hereinafter also simply referred to as a head) is exposed to a high temperature by heating of the heating resistor, and is subjected to physical action such as impact caused by cavitation accompanying ink foaming and shrinkage, and chemical action by ink. The effect is received in combination. Therefore, an upper protective layer is usually provided in the heat acting part in order to protect the electrothermal conversion element from these influences. Conventionally, by providing a protective layer in which a Ta film having a thickness of 0.2 to 0.5 μm, which is relatively strong against impact caused by cavitation and chemical action by ink, is provided, the life of the head can be increased. We tried to balance reliability.
FIG. 26 is a schematic cross-sectional view showing the vicinity of the thermal action portion of a conventional inkjet head. In FIG. 26,
The ink
Here, in the
Therefore, conventionally, the use of an ink containing a dye having a high heat resistance, or an ink that has been sufficiently refined to reduce the amount of impurities in the dye has been made difficult to cause kogation. However, there have been problems such as an increase in the manufacturing cost of ink and a limitation on the types of dyes that can be used.
In order to solve the above-mentioned problems,
Here, in order to perform stable ink bubbling, it is important that the dust accumulated on the heat acting portion is uniformly and reliably removed. However, when the present inventors verified the technique disclosed in
Further, in
The present invention has been made in view of these problems, and even if kogation accumulates on the heat acting portion, it can be uniformly and reliably removed, thereby stabilizing the discharge characteristics. An object of the present invention is to enable reliable and high-quality image recording.
Another object of the present invention is to enable cleaning in the course of a series of recording processes without requiring special and troublesome cleaning processes by a dedicated trader or user.
In order to achieve the above object, the present invention comprises the following arrangement.
According to a first aspect of the present invention, there are provided a plurality of electrothermal conversion elements that generate thermal energy for ejecting ink in an ink flow path, the plurality of electrothermal conversion elements, and ink in the ink flow path. And a plurality of upper protective layers formed of a material containing iridium or ruthenium so as to cover each of the portions heated by the plurality of electrothermal conversion elements of the protective layer. The plurality of upper protective layers are disposed on the protective layer via a conductive layer formed of a material containing tantalum or niobium, and the plurality of upper protective layers are A voltage serving as an anode electrode is applied from the outside through the conductive layer.
According to a second aspect of the present invention, an electrothermal conversion element that generates thermal energy for discharging ink in an ink flow path, and a contact between the electrothermal conversion element and the ink in the ink flow path are blocked. An inkjet head comprising: an insulating protective layer; and an upper protective layer formed of a material containing iridium or ruthenium so as to cover a portion of the protective layer heated by the electrothermal conversion element, The upper protective layer is disposed on the protective layer via a conductive layer formed of a material containing tantalum or niobium, and the upper protective layer is applied with a voltage to be an anode electrode from the outside via the conductive layer. It is characterized by being.
According to a third aspect of the present invention, there is provided an ink jet recording apparatus having the ink jet head according to the first aspect or the second aspect, wherein voltage applying means for applying a voltage to the upper protective layer through the conductive layer is provided. It is characterized by having.
In the present invention, the upper protective layer that covers the heated portion of the protective layer that blocks the contact between the electrothermal conversion element and the ink is formed of iridium or ruthenium. Therefore, if a voltage serving as an anode electrode is applied to the upper protective layer, the surface layer of the upper protective layer is eluted by an electrochemical reaction even with ink that does not have a high pH value, and an oxide film is formed on the upper protective layer at a high temperature. Is not formed. For this reason, the kogation of the heated part can be removed uniformly and reliably, and the inkjet head cleaning process can be performed in a series of recording processes on the user side. Therefore, according to the present invention, the ejection characteristics of the inkjet head are stable, and reliable and high-quality image recording is performed.
Hereinafter, the present invention will be described in detail with reference to the drawings.
1. In order to corrode the surface layer of the heat acting part by an electrochemical reaction and remove the accumulated kogation uniformly and reliably, it is strongly desirable to apply a uniform potential to the upper protective layer. However, the present inventors, if the material used as the upper protective layer is not properly selected, an oxide film is formed on the surface of the upper protective layer by being exposed to a high temperature by heating to foam the ink, It has been found that even when a voltage is applied, a desired electrochemical reaction is hindered. In order to avoid this, the present inventors selected a material that elutes by an electrochemical reaction in the ink and that is chemically stable even at high temperatures and does not form a strong oxide film by heating as the upper protective layer. I got the knowledge that it should be.
The upper protective layer is premised on having the property of being dissolved in a liquid by an electrochemical reaction in addition to the original function of protection from physical and chemical impacts. The presence or absence of metal elution due to electrochemical reaction can be generally grasped by looking at potential-pH diagrams of various metals. As a material that has a preferable elution region and does not form a strong oxide film by heating, the present inventors have made Ir or Ru alone, an alloy of Ir and another metal, or an alloy of Ru and another metal. It was found that it is preferable to select In particular, as the protective layer, the higher the content of Ir or Ru, the more efficiently the electrochemical reaction proceeds. Therefore, the case of each single metal is most preferable. However, even in the case of Ir alloy or Ru alloy, the effects of the present invention can be obtained. Thus, the effect of the present invention can be obtained as long as the material contains at least Ir or Ru.
That is, it was found that a material containing a metal that elutes by an electrochemical reaction with ink should be selected as the protective layer.
FIG. 1 shows a potential-pH diagram of Ir among these. As is apparent from FIG. 1, it can be seen that Ir has a region (corrosion region due to dissolution in a solution; hereinafter referred to as an elution region) that elutes when an electric potential is applied using this as an anode electrode. In FIG. 1, lines L <b> 1 and L <b> 2 indicate potentials related to water generation / decomposition. That is, oxygen is generated only in the region above the line L1, and hydrogen is generated only in the region below the line L2. Accordingly, the stable region of water is between the two lines L1 and L2.
Also, it is presumed that the surface of the heat acting part of the upper protective layer above the heat generating part is usually heated to about 300 to 600 ° C. due to heat generated by the heat generating part formed by the gap between the electrode wiring and the heat generating resistor layer. ing. On the other hand, since Ir has been known not to form an oxide film up to 800 ° C. even in the air, it can be preferably selected as the upper protective layer.
On the other hand, Ta as described in
On the other hand, since Ir has a preferable elution region as shown in FIG. 1, it is not necessary to use a special koge removal solution having a high pH value. The ink used for ink jet recording contains an electrolyte, which is sufficient when using Ir. That is, an electrochemical reaction can be generated even when ink is present in the inkjet head. Accordingly, it is possible to perform the cleaning process in a series of recording processes on the user side.

First Embodiment 2.1 Configuration of Inkjet Head FIG. 2 is a schematic plan view of the vicinity of a thermal action portion of an inkjet head substrate according to a first embodiment of the present invention. FIG. 3 is a schematic cross-sectional view showing the substrate cut vertically along the line III-III in FIG.
2 and 3,
A
The upper
The flow
In the above configuration, the upper
Note that Ir used as the upper
In this embodiment, it is assumed that an electrochemical reaction between the upper
Furthermore, in the present embodiment, the upper
In the present embodiment, the upper
Further, Ir is used as the upper

2.2 Manufacturing process of inkjet head An example of the manufacturing process of the inkjet head according to the first embodiment will be described.

2.3 Kogation Removal Experiment Basically, a kogation removal experiment was performed on two examples of an inkjet head produced using the substrate configuration shown in FIGS. 2 and 3 and a comparative example, and the effects of the first embodiment were obtained. Verified.

Using a plurality of ink jet heads manufactured according to the above steps, a kogation removal experiment was performed. In the experiment method, the heating part is driven under a predetermined condition so that kogation is deposited on the

Next, a plurality of inkjet heads according to Example 2 were manufactured by the same process as Example 1 except that the upper
When Ru was used as the upper
It is known that Ru is easier to dry etch than Ir, and an inkjet head substrate can be manufactured more easily than Ir.
(Comparative example)
Next, a plurality of inkjet heads according to the comparative example were manufactured by the same process as in Example 1 except that the upper
Here, first, a drive pulse having a voltage of 18 V and a width of 1.2 μs was applied to the electrothermal conversion element 5.0 × 10 6 times at a frequency of 5 kHz. Immediately thereafter, accumulation of kogation and a decrease in recording quality were confirmed in the same manner as described above.
Then, the same kogation removal process as described above was performed, but unlike Example 1 and Example 2, kogation remained deposited. Here, when the area apart from the upper
The above experimental results are shown in Table 1.
As is clear from the experimental results, in order to remove the kogation on the
Further, it can be seen that the thickness of the upper protective layer may be appropriately determined from the amount of film thickness reduction by one kogation removal process and the estimated number of executions of the kogation removal process for the inkjet head.
3. Second Embodiment As described above, when the upper
Therefore, in the configuration shown in FIG. 3 in which the
In order to avoid this, it may be considered that the upper
3. Second Embodiment 3.1 Configuration of Inkjet Head Therefore, in the second embodiment of the present invention, the

FIG. 8 is a schematic plan view of the vicinity of the
The present embodiment is different from the first embodiment in that the
In the present embodiment, the upper

3.3 Kogation Removal Experiment A kogation removal experiment was performed on two examples (Example 3 and Example 4) of the ink jet head produced using the substrate configuration shown in FIGS. 8 and 9, and the effect of the second embodiment Verified.

(Example 3)
Using a plurality of ink jet heads manufactured according to the above steps, a kogation removal experiment was performed. In the experimental method, the
First, a drive pulse having a voltage of 20 V and a width of 1.5 μs was applied to the electrothermal conversion element 5.0 × 10 6 times at a frequency of 5 kHz.

FIG. 12B is an explanatory diagram showing the state after the application. From the top of the
FIG. 13 is a schematic cross-sectional view showing a state cut along a line XIII-XIII in FIG. The pattern end of the upper
From this, it is presumed that the following state was obtained while the voltage was applied. First, when a voltage is applied to the
As is apparent from FIG. 13, since the
Next, driving under the same conditions as the above driving conditions was performed again on the inkjet head after the kogation removal processing. Immediately thereafter, accumulation of koge K and a decrease in recording quality were confirmed in the same manner as described above.
Then, when the same kogation removing process as described above was performed, the accumulated kogation K disappeared, and the recovery of the recording quality was confirmed.
(Example 4)
Next, a plurality of inkjet heads according to Example 4 were manufactured by the same process as Example 3 except that the
Further, when Nb is used as the
The above experimental results are shown in Table 2.
As is apparent from the experimental results, even when the ink jet head according to the present embodiment is used, even if kogation accumulates on the heat acting part due to long-term use, it can be removed uniformly and reliably. It turns out that it becomes.
Further, by using the ink jet head of the present embodiment, it is possible to remove the kogation on the heat acting part without reducing the adhesion between the flow path forming member and the substrate. That is, it is possible to provide a high-quality recorded image with stable ejection characteristics and reliability even after long-term use in which the burn removal process is performed many times.
In addition, although Ta or Nb was used as the adhesion layer, the material for forming the adhesion layer is not limited to this as long as it is a material that does not elute by electrolysis when removing the kogation of the heat acting portion. Even when other materials are used, the potential at which the adhesion layer does not elute and the upper protective layer elutes is determined based on the potential-pH diagram, so that the adhesion between the flow path forming member and the substrate is not degraded. Can be removed.

For example, the ink tank may be detachably mounted, and when the remaining amount of ink in the ink tank is exhausted, the ink tank may be removed and a new ink tank may be mounted. The ink jet head may be configured separately from the ink tank and supplied with ink through a tube or the like.
4.4 Control Procedure In the
FIG. 17 shows an example of a recording processing procedure that can be implemented by the recording apparatus using the inkjet head of the present invention.
When a recording instruction is issued from the
When the recording operation for one unit (for example, one sheet of recording paper) is completed, the accumulated data of the dot count value stored in the
If it is determined here that the predetermined value Th has been reached, a voltage is applied to the upper
On the other hand, if a negative determination is made in step S9, the accumulated data of the dot count value stored in the
In the above procedure, the kogation removal process or the recovery process is performed after the recording operation. However, it may be performed prior to the recording operation. In this case, dot count is performed based on the recording data developed in step S1, and this is added to the accumulated value of the dot count, and whether or not the kogation removal process is performed is determined based on the added value. be able to. It is also possible to perform the kogation removal process every predetermined amount of recording operation (for example, every one or several scans of the inkjet head).
Further, the process for discharging ink after the kogation removal process is not limited to the above-described suction recovery. A discharge may be performed by pressurizing the ink supply system that reaches the discharge port. Further, the discharge may be performed by a process (preliminary ejection process) for driving the heat generating portion and ejecting ink separately from the recording operation. In this case, drive pulses for preliminary ejection can also be reflected in the count.
In any case, according to the present invention, the cleaning process including the kogation removal process can be performed as it is in a series of recording processes. Therefore, a special and complicated cleaning process that is performed by removing the ink-jet head is not required, and the cleaning process can be performed efficiently.
5). Third Embodiment Hereinafter, a third embodiment of the present invention will be described in detail with reference to the drawings.
5.1 Configuration of Inkjet Head FIG. 18 is a schematic plan view of the vicinity of the thermal action portion of the inkjet head substrate according to the third embodiment of the present invention. FIG. 19 is a schematic cross-sectional view showing a state in which the substrate is cut vertically along the line XIX-XIX in FIG.
In FIGS. 18 and 19,
The
The
Furthermore, in this third embodiment, the formation site of the upper
FIG. 20 is a diagram showing a voltage application state to the two
As described above, the
However, when the polarity of the voltage applied to both regions is kept constant, that is, when the
Therefore, in the third embodiment, the polarity of the applied voltage is reversed so that the
In the third embodiment, the upper
Furthermore, Ir is used as the upper
In the third embodiment, the upper
In the third embodiment, the anode-side electrode and the cathode-side electrode are inverted by the
5.2 Kogation removal experiment
Next, the cleaning method of the ink jet head in the third embodiment will be described more specifically based on the following examples.
(Example 5)
A plurality of the above inkjet heads were prepared, and for each, a kogation removal experiment by the cleaning method in the above embodiment was performed. In the experiment method, the kogation removing process is performed by driving the
First, for the purpose of depositing kogation on the upper
FIG. 21A is an explanatory diagram showing the state of the upper
Next, as a kogation K removal process (cleaning process), a DC voltage of 10 V was applied to the
FIG. 21B is an explanatory diagram showing a state after voltage application in this kogation process. From the
Therefore, a voltage was applied under the same conditions as above except that the upper
From this, it is presumed that the following state change occurred on the surface of the upper
First, when a voltage is applied to the
Moreover, since the
Next, the electrothermal transducer was driven again under the same driving conditions as above for the inkjet head after the kogation removal treatment. After the electrothermal transducer is driven, kogation K is confirmed to be deposited as described above. Therefore, it was confirmed that the image recorded in this state was deteriorated in recording quality.
Thereafter, a kogation removal process similar to that described above was performed. As a result, accumulated kogation K disappeared, and recovery of the recording quality was confirmed.
The above experimental results are shown in Table 3.
In Table 3, in the column of the surface state, ◯ indicates a state where no kogation is deposited, and x indicates a state where kogation is deposited. In the recording quality column, ◯ indicates good recording quality, and x indicates deterioration of recording quality. BCI-6e (manufactured by Canon) was used as the dye ink.
As is clear from the experimental results, according to the cleaning method of the present embodiment, the dye ink is used even when kog K is deposited on the

Here, when it is determined that the threshold value is exceeded, the
On the other hand, if a negative determination is made in step S25, the accumulated data of the dot count value stored in the
Although the kogation removal process or the recovery process is performed after the recording operation, the kogation removal process or the recovery process may be performed prior to the recording operation also in the third embodiment.
Further, the process for discharging the ink after the kogation removal process is not limited to the suction recovery as described above, and the discharge may be performed by pressurizing the ink supply system that reaches the ejection port. In addition to the recording operation, discharging may be performed by a process (preliminary ejection process) in which the thermal action unit is driven to eject ink.
In any case, according to the third embodiment, a special and troublesome cleaning process performed by removing the ink jet head is not required, and the cleaning process can be performed efficiently.
6). Fourth Embodiment As in the first embodiment, when the upper
Therefore, in the fourth embodiment of the present invention, a cleaning method is employed in which voltage application to the upper
6.1 Kogation Removal Experiment In the process of manufacturing the substrate shown in FIGS. 8 and 9 and the inkjet head shown in FIG. 6, an inkjet head having an ejected ink droplet amount of 5 picoliters was produced. A kogation removal experiment was performed on the example using the inkjet head (Example 6) and the comparative example, and the effect of the fourth embodiment was verified.
(Example 6)
Using the above inkjet head and the cleaning method of this embodiment, a kogation removal experiment was performed. In the experiment method, the kogation removing process is performed by energizing the upper
First, a driving pulse having a voltage of 20 V and a width of 1.5 μs was applied to the heat generating portion 5.0 × 10 6 times at a frequency of 5 kHz. As shown in FIG. 23A, an impurity K called koge was deposited almost uniformly on the
Next, a DC voltage of 10 V was applied to the
As shown in FIG. 23 (b), it was confirmed that kog K that had been deposited up to that point was removed from above
As is clear from this result, by performing an electrochemical reaction for eluting the upper
Next, in order to deposit kogation again on the
Then, when the same kogation removal process as described above was performed, the accumulated kogation K disappeared, and the recovery of the recording quality was confirmed.
(Comparative example)
Next, ink suction using a recovery pump was started after the start of voltage application for the electrochemical reaction, and a kogation removal process was performed. The ink suction operation was performed until the voltage application was completed.
First, a driving pulse having a voltage of 20 V and a width of 1.5 μs was applied to the heat generating portion 5.0 × 10 6 times at a frequency of 5 kHz. As shown in FIG. 23A, an impurity K called koge was deposited almost uniformly on the
Then, kogation removal processing was performed in the same manner as in Example 6 above, but unlike Example 6, kog K was partially deposited as shown in FIG.
In order to confirm the occurrence of such a phenomenon, ink suction was stopped during voltage application, and the region of the upper
The above experimental results are shown in Table 4.
As is clear from this experiment, it is understood that it is appropriate to perform the electrochemical reaction while performing ink suction in order to perform the elution of the upper
In this embodiment, the ink recovery process is performed before the electrochemical reaction of the upper
6.2 Control Procedure FIG. 25 shows an example of a recording processing procedure that can be performed by the recording apparatus using the cleaning method of the present invention.
When a recording instruction is issued from the
When the recording operation for one unit (for example, one sheet of recording paper) is completed, the accumulated data of the dot count value stored in the
Here, if it is determined that the value is equal to or greater than the predetermined value Th, the recovery process is started as described above (step S51). Then, a voltage is applied to the upper
On the other hand, if a negative determination is made in step S49, the accumulated data of the dot count value stored in the
In the above procedure, the recovery process or the kogation removal process is performed after the recording operation, but it may be performed prior to the recording operation. In this case, dot count is performed based on the recording data developed in step S41, and this is added to the accumulated value of the dot count, and whether or not the kogation removal process is performed is determined based on the added value. be able to. It is also possible to perform the kogation removal process every predetermined amount of recording operation (for example, every one or several scans of the inkjet head).
Further, the process for discharging ink that starts before the kogation removal process is not limited to the above-described suction recovery. A discharge may be performed by pressurizing the ink supply system that reaches the discharge port.
In any case, according to the present invention, the cleaning process including the kogation removal process can be performed as it is in a series of recording processes. Therefore, a special and complicated cleaning process that is performed by removing the ink-jet head is not required, and the cleaning process can be performed efficiently.
In the fourth embodiment, the polarity of the voltage applied to the upper protective layer may be reversed as in the third embodiment. According to this, a more reliable kogation removal effect can be expected.
Further, in the above description, in order to prevent clogging of the discharge port, the ink in the ink flow channel is used as an ink discharge mechanism for performing an ink discharge operation for discharging the ink in the ink flow channel from the discharge port. As an example, the suction recovery mechanism that performs suction is explained. However, the present invention can use an ink discharge mechanism other than the suction recovery mechanism. That is, a pressure recovery mechanism that applies pressure (positive pressure) to the ink in the ink flow path of the ink jet head and forcibly discharges the ink from the discharge port by the pressure is also known as the ink discharge mechanism. This pressure recovery mechanism is mainly used in an inkjet recording apparatus that performs high-speed recording using a large inkjet head, such as an industrial inkjet recording apparatus or a full-line inkjet recording apparatus. The present invention can also be applied to an apparatus that performs an ink discharge operation by such a pressure recovery mechanism, and can be expected to have the same effect as the case of performing the suction recovery operation.
