2. Description of the Related Art Conventionally, an ink jet recording apparatus having an ink jet recording head that performs an image recording operation according to image data by driving a piezoelectric element to generate pressure on ink in the ink jet recording head and discharging the ink from nozzles. It has been known. In such an ink jet recording head, if the recording operation is continued in a state where ink ejection failure or non-ejection has occurred, image quality deteriorates, and as a result, in order to obtain good image quality again Since it is necessary to perform the recording operation, problems such as excessive consumption of paper and a long time required for the recording operation have occurred.

For this reason, a technique for detecting non-ejection of an ink jet recording head has been disclosed (see, for example, Patent Document 1 and Patent Document 2).

However, with the above technique, it has not been possible to detect the ejection or non-ejection state of ink droplets during a recording operation by an inkjet recording head. In addition, a dedicated mechanism for detecting non-ejection of ink is necessary, and there is a problem that the size of the ink jet recording apparatus is increased.

The present invention has been made to solve the above-described problems, and an object thereof is to provide an ink jet recording apparatus and an ink jet recording method that detect an abnormality of an ink jet recording head during a recording operation with a simple configuration.

In order to solve the above problems, an inkjet recording apparatus of the present invention is an inkjet recording apparatus that performs an image recording operation according to image data by driving a piezoelectric element and ejecting ink in an inkjet recording head from a nozzle. By applying a drive voltage waveform including a peak based on a drive signal according to image data to the piezoelectric element, a drive means for driving the piezoelectric element and a response synchronized with a pressure change in the ink jet recording head are shown. It includes a vibration detecting means for detecting the response waveform in the detected waveform whose response waveform superimposed by the said vibration detection means from the drive means to the drive voltage waveform applied to the piezoelectric element, a peak based on the driving signal frequency analysis hand stage to determine the frequency spectrum analyzed in the frequency characteristic of the period without T And it includes a storage means to store the frequency spectrum of normal ejection, which is determined by the frequency analysis means, and the abnormality detecting means connected to a power line for electrically connecting the said drive means and said vibration detecting means, the recording Judgment means for judging whether or not the ink jet recording head is abnormal based on the correlation between the frequency spectrum obtained by the frequency analysis means and the frequency spectrum stored in the storage means during operation; ing.

The ink jet recording method of the present invention, by discharging the ink in the ink jet recording head by driving the piezoelectric element from the nozzle, the ink jet recording apparatus for image recording operation in accordance with image data, corresponding to image data By applying a drive voltage waveform including a peak based on the drive signal to the piezoelectric element, the piezoelectric element is driven, and a response waveform indicating a response synchronized with a pressure change in the inkjet recording head is detected, and the drive in the waveform of said response waveform to the voltage waveform superimposed to obtain the frequency spectrum analyzed in the frequency characteristic of the period T without the peak based on the drive signal, during the recording operation, normal ejection stored in advance and the frequency spectrum based on the correlation between the frequency spectrum of time, said ink jet recording head It is determined whether or not normal.

The ink jet recording apparatus and the ink jet recording method of the present invention drive a piezoelectric element to discharge ink in an ink jet recording head from a nozzle. The driving means drives the piezoelectric element by applying a driving voltage waveform including a peak based on a driving signal corresponding to the image data to the piezoelectric element. By this ink ejection, an image recording operation corresponding to the image data is performed. The vibration detecting means detects a response waveform indicating a response synchronized with the pressure change of the ink in the ink jet recording head. The abnormality detection means is connected to a power line that electrically connects the vibration detection means and the drive means, and includes a frequency analysis means and a storage means. The frequency analysis means analyzes the frequency characteristics of the period T that does not include a peak based on the drive signal in a waveform in which the response waveform detected by the vibration detection means is superimposed on the drive voltage waveform applied from the drive means to the piezoelectric element. To obtain the frequency spectrum. As the number of ink ejections increases, ink non-ejection tends to occur because, for example, gas dissolved in the ink in the ink jet recording head gradually precipitates. Therefore, the frequency spectrum obtained by the frequency analysis means at the time of normal ejection is stored in the storage means, the frequency spectrum obtained by the frequency analysis means during the recording operation by the judgment means, and the frequency spectrum stored in the storage means Based on these correlations, it is determined whether or not the ink jet recording head has an abnormality such as ink ejection failure or non-ejection.

In this way, during the recording operation, the pressure vibration of the ink in the ink jet recording head is detected and the frequency characteristics of the detected pressure vibration are analyzed, and the frequency spectrum during the initial ejection and the frequency spectrum during the recording operation Based on this correlation, it is determined whether or not the ink jet recording head is abnormal. Therefore, it is possible to easily detect the abnormality of the ink jet recording head during the recording operation.

The determination means calculates a correlation function between the frequency spectrum obtained by the frequency analysis means and the frequency spectrum stored in the storage means, and is normal when the value of the correlation function is a value within a predetermined range and not zero. When the value of the correlation function is outside the predetermined range, or when the value of the correlation function is 0, it can be determined that there is an abnormality.

The case where the value of the correlation function is 0 is a state in which the ink pressure vibration during the recording operation is not detected, and therefore it is determined that the ink jet recording head is abnormal. Also, when the value of the correlation function is outside the predetermined range, it is determined that the ink jet recording head is abnormal.

The ink jet recording head further includes a recovery unit that performs recovery processing of the ink jet recording head by sucking ink from outside the nozzle, and the determination unit is abnormal when the value of the correlation function is outside a predetermined range. it is possible to control the recovery means so as to cancel performs recovery processing of the ink jet recording head of the recording operation when it is determined that. As described above, during the recording operation, the recovery process can be performed when the correlation function value is determined to be abnormal with a value outside the predetermined range, so that the inkjet recording head can be efficiently recovered at an appropriate timing. .

A warning means for stopping the recording operation and performing a warning process when the value of the correlation function is determined to be abnormal by the determination means being 0 can be further provided.

When the correlation coefficient is 0 and it is determined that there is an abnormality, the ink pressure vibration during the recording operation is not detected, so the recording operation is stopped and warning processing is performed by the warning means. For this reason, it can be easily warned that the ink jet recording head is abnormal.

The restoration unit performs the restoration process while driving the piezoelectric element by the driving unit, and the determination unit analyzes a frequency characteristic of a response waveform detected by the vibration detection unit during the restoration process by the restoration unit. to determine the frequency spectrum obtained I by the frequency analysis means, the correlation function of the stored frequency spectra calculated in the storage means, and release complete if the value of correlation function value within a predetermined range by Can do. By using the correlation function in this way, it is possible to appropriately determine whether or not the recovery operation is complete during the recovery operation.

According to the ink jet recording apparatus and the ink jet recording method of the present invention, during the recording operation, the pressure vibration of the ink generated by the pressure change in the ink jet recording head is detected, and the frequency characteristic of the detected pressure vibration is analyzed, Based on the correlation between the frequency spectrum at the time of initial ejection and the frequency spectrum at the time of recording operation, it is determined whether or not the ink jet recording head is abnormal. Therefore, it is possible to easily detect the abnormality of the ink jet recording head during the recording operation. Has the effect of being able to.

Hereinafter, embodiments of the present invention will be described in detail with reference to the drawings.

As shown in FIG. 1, a display unit 31 (see FIG. 5) for displaying various information is provided in the casing 14 of the inkjet recording apparatus 12 of the present embodiment. A paper feed tray 16 is provided in the lower part of the housing 14, and the sheets Q stacked in the paper feed tray 16 can be taken out one by one by the pickup roll 18. The taken paper Q is conveyed by a plurality of conveyance roller pairs 20 constituting a predetermined conveyance path 22.

Above the paper feed tray 16, an endless transport belt 28 stretched around a drive roll 24 and a driven roll 26 is disposed. A recording head array 30 is disposed above the conveyor belt 28 and faces the flat portion 28F of the conveyor belt 28. This opposed area is an ejection area SE where ink droplets are ejected from the recording head array 30. The paper Q transported along the transport path 22 is held by the transport belt 28 and reaches the discharge area SE, and ink droplets corresponding to image data are discharged from the printhead array 30 in a state of facing the printhead array 30. The

For example, the transport belt 28 is made of a semiconductive polyimide material (for example, a surface resistance value of 10 10 to 10 13 Ω, a volume resistance value of 10 9 to 10 12 Ω · cm), a thickness of 75 μm, a width of 380 mm, and a circumference. What was shape | molded in length 1000mm can be used. Moreover, as the drive roll 24 and the driven roll 26, a SUS roll with a diameter of 50 mm can be used as an example.

The recording head array 30 includes a long yellow (Y), magenta (M), and a plurality of inkjet recording heads 32 1 to 32 n arranged in the width direction of the paper Q (direction orthogonal to the transport direction). Four color recording heads 33 of cyan (C) and black (K) are arranged along the transport direction, and a full color image can be recorded. In the present embodiment, the number of arrays of the recording heads 33 is four in order to simplify the description, but the number is not limited to four.

In the vicinity of the recording head array 30, maintenance mechanisms 34 as recovery means corresponding to the recording heads 33 are arranged. When maintenance is performed on the recording head 33, as shown in FIG. 2, the recording head array 30 moves upward, and the maintenance mechanism 34 moves into the gap formed between the conveyance belt 28 and enters. . And the recovery process which attracts | sucks the ink in a nozzle is performed in the state facing the nozzle surface.

A charging roll 36 is disposed on the upstream side of the recording head array 30. The charging roll 36 is driven while sandwiching the conveyance belt 28 and the paper Q with the driven roll 26, and moves between a pressing position for pressing the paper Q against the conveyance belt 28 and a separation position separated from the conveyance belt 28. It is possible. In the pressing position, a predetermined potential difference is generated between the grounded driven roll 26 and the sheet Q can be charged and electrostatically attracted to the transport belt 28.

As the charging roll 36, for example, a roll having a diameter of 14 mm can be used in which conductive rubber is coated on the surface of silicone rubber and the volume resistance value is adjusted to about 10 6 to 10 7 Ω · cm.

A registration roll (not shown) is provided further upstream than the charging roll 36, and the paper Q is aligned before reaching the conveyance belt 28 and the charging roll 36.

A peeling plate (not shown) is disposed on the downstream side of the recording head array 30, and the paper Q can be peeled from the conveyance belt 28. As the peeling plate, for example, an aluminum plate having a thickness of 0.5 mm, a width of 330 mm, and a length of 100 mm can be used.

The peeled paper Q is conveyed by a plurality of discharge roller pairs 42 that constitute a discharge path 44 on the downstream side of the peeling plate, and is discharged to a paper discharge tray 46 provided in the upper part of the housing 14.

Below the peeling plate, a cleaning roll 48 capable of sandwiching the conveyance belt 28 with the driving roll 24 is disposed, and the surface of the conveyance belt 28 is cleaned.

A reversing path 52 composed of a plurality of reversing roller pairs 50 is provided between the paper feed tray 16 and the conveying belt 28, and the sheet Q on which the image is recorded on one side is reversed and held on the conveying belt 28. By doing so, image recording on both sides of the paper Q can be easily performed.

Between the conveyance belt 28 and the paper discharge tray 46, an ink tank 54 for storing each of the four color inks is provided. The ink in the ink tank 54 is supplied to the recording head array 30 through an ink supply pipe (not shown). As the ink, various known inks such as water-based ink, oil-based ink, and solvent-based ink can be used.

In the ink jet recording apparatus 12 of the present embodiment configured as described above, the paper Q taken out from the paper feed tray 16 is transported to the transport belt 28 as described above. Then, it is pressed against the conveyor belt 28 by the charging roll 36 and is held by being attracted (contacted) to the conveyor belt 28 by the voltage applied from the charging roll 36. In this state, the ink droplets are ejected from the recording head array 30 while the paper Q passes through the ejection area SE by circulation of the transport belt, and an image is recorded on the ejection area SE.

A main circuit 60 for controlling the main body of the inkjet recording apparatus 12 is further provided in the housing 14.

As shown in FIG. 5, the main circuit 60 of the ink jet recording apparatus 12 according to the present embodiment includes a drive circuit 62, a control unit 64, and an abnormality detection unit 66. The control unit 64 is connected to the maintenance mechanism 34 and the display unit 31 so as to be able to send and receive signals, and via the drive circuit 62, each of the ink jet recording heads 32 1 to 32 n is connected to be able to send and receive signals via a power line. The abnormality detection unit 66 is connected to the control unit 64 and is connected to a power line that electrically connects the drive circuit 62 and the inkjet recording heads 32 1 to 32 n .

As shown in FIG. 3, each of the ink jet recording heads 32 1 to 32 n is an ink flow path that constitutes an ink flow path including an ink pool 78, an ink supply path 77, an ink pressure chamber 72, a communication path 76, and a nozzle 75. A substrate 70 is included.

The ink pool 78 supplies ink to the ink pressure chamber 72 via the ink supply path 77. The nozzle 75 discharges the ink pressurized in the ink pressure chamber 72 to the outside of the ink jet recording heads 32 1 to 32 n through the communication path 76. The ink pressure chamber 72 is provided with a piezoelectric element 74 composed of a piezo element so as to be in contact with the elastic body 73 having a thickness of about 10 μm and the common electrode 71, and the ink pressure chamber 74 is driven by the driving of the piezoelectric element 74. The ink in 72 is pressurized (details will be described later). The piezoelectric element 74 of the present embodiment is thinly processed into a rectangular shape, and the thickness thereof is about 30 μm, but is not limited to such a form. In addition, the piezoelectric element 74 of the present embodiment has a size that is the same as or smaller than the size of the ink pressure chamber 72, and an epoxy adhesive at a position that completely corresponds to the inside of the outer shape of the ink pressure chamber 2. The ink pressure chamber 72 is joined to the ink pressure chamber 72 via the common electrode 71 and the elastic body 73.

The individual electrode 79 and the common electrode 71 are connected to the drive circuit 62 and the abnormality detection unit 66 of the main circuit 60, and a drive voltage waveform of about several volts to several tens of volts is applied between the individual electrode 79 and the common electrode 71. 4, the piezoelectric element 74 is deformed, and due to the deformation of the piezoelectric element 74, the internal pressure in the ink pressure chamber 72 is increased, and ink is ejected from the corresponding nozzle 75, so that an image corresponding to the image data is obtained. Is recorded on the paper Q. Specifically, a pressure wave is generated in the ink pressure chamber 72 by the deformation of the piezoelectric element 74 and the pressure wave is propagated to the ink in the vicinity of the nozzle 75, whereby the ink is ejected from the nozzle 75. When ink is ejected from the nozzle 75, the piezoelectric element 74 returns to the initial state (see FIG. 3), which is an undeformed state. At this time, an amount of ink corresponding to the amount of ink ejected from the ink pool 78 by the surface tension of the surface where the ink in the nozzle 75 is in contact with the atmosphere (so-called meniscus) and the capillary force of the ink in the nozzle 75 The ink is supplied to the ink pressure chamber 72 through the supply path 77.

As described above, when the drive voltage waveform is applied from the main circuit 60 to the piezoelectric element 74 via the individual electrode 79 and the common electrode 71 and ink is ejected from the nozzle 75, each ink in the inkjet recording heads 32 1 to 32 n is discharged. A minute voltage waveform (hereinafter referred to as a response waveform) indicating a response synchronized with a pressure change in the pressure chamber 72 is sent back to the main circuit 60 side in a manner to be superimposed on the applied drive voltage waveform. The waveform in which the response waveform is superimposed on the drive voltage waveform is input to the abnormality detection unit 66 that determines whether the inkjet recording heads 32 1 to 32 n of the main circuit 60 are abnormal.

Here, in FIG. 6, fine holes are opened in the side surfaces of the ink pressure chambers 72 of the ink jet recording heads 32 1 to 32 n , and a capacitance type small pressure sensor is pasted, and image data is transferred to the piezoelectric element 74. A detection result obtained by detecting, with an oscilloscope, a pressure waveform 81 indicating a pressure change in the ink pressure chamber 72 when ink is ejected from the nozzle 75 by applying a drive voltage waveform 80 including a peak 82 based on the corresponding drive signal. Indicated. In FIG. 7, the drive voltage waveform 80 is enlarged in the voltage direction, and only the enlarged portion corresponding to the dotted line region 83 of the drive voltage waveform 80 is shown as the drive voltage waveform 80A. As shown in FIG. 7, after the trailing end of the peak 82, a minute voltage change showing a response synchronized with the pressure vibration of the ink in the ink pressure chamber 72 bounces back to the main circuit 60 side as a response waveform 84. come. The cycle of the drive voltage waveform 80A on which the response waveform 84 is superimposed coincided with the cycle of the pressure waveform 81 measured by the small pressure sensor.

As shown in FIGS. 6 and 7, the pressure waveform 81 and the drive voltage waveform 80 </ b> A are shifted in phase. The difference in the installation position appears as a time lag in response and can be ignored.

In the experiments shown in FIGS. 6 and 7, the case where the drive voltage waveform 80 and the response waveform 84 are detected by measuring the voltage value has been described, but the current value may be measured. However, since the response waveform obtained by measuring the current value is a differential waveform with respect to the waveform obtained by detecting the voltage value, the phase is shifted by π / 2.

As described above, the experimental results shown in FIGS. 6 and 7 indicate that the piezoelectric element 74 as the driving element can be used as a pressure sensor. Therefore, in this embodiment, a case where the piezoelectric element 74 is used as a pressure sensor will be described.

As shown in Table 1, the response waveform shows a state where there is no ink in the ink pressure chamber 72, a state where air bubbles are interposed in the ink, or a power line electrically connecting the piezoelectric element 74 and the drive circuit 62 is cut off. The shape varies depending on various conditions of the ink jet recording heads 32 1 to 32 n such as the state.

Figure 0004561229
Figure 0004561229

When there are no bubbles in the ink pressure chamber 72, the period of the response waveform is quantitative and the phase is stable (Table 1, Case 3).

When the gas that was dissolved in the ink precipitates to form fine bubbles and appears to appear as a response change, the response waveform cycle is constant and ejection is performed normally. Even in such a case, there is a phenomenon in which the phase sometimes fluctuates at an instantaneous time (see case 4 in Table 1). However, when the fine bubbles in the ink disappear, there are cases where the normal state is restored naturally.

When microbubbles grow after the predictive phenomenon, as shown in FIG. 8, the response waveform 86A is extremely unstable in both period and phase and has a relatively long period (see Table 3, Case 5). This is because the bulk elastic modulus of the ink in the entire ink flow path is apparently decreased and the natural frequency of the entire ink flow path is greatly decreased, and bubbles move around in the ink flow path with respect to the piezoelectric element 74. This is because the phase of the response waveform 86A is not constant. The drop in the bulk modulus of the ink in the entire ink flow path is due to the fact that the bulk modulus of ink is approximately 2 × 10 9 Pa, but the bulk modulus of air is 1.4 × 10 5 Pa and the order of magnitude differs greatly. is there.

When the generated bubbles have a size over the entire cross section of the ink flow path, the natural frequency of the entire ink flow path becomes higher and the period of the response waveform becomes shorter (Case 2 in Table 1). This is because the ink flow path including the nozzle 75, the communication path 76, the ink pressure chamber 72, and the ink supply path 77 of the ink jet recording heads 32 1 to 32 n is considered as one acoustic tube using ink as a medium, and its acoustics. This is because the tube is cut into pieces by bubbles, and the state is equivalent to an acoustic tube having a short tube length.

When there is no ink in the ink pressure chamber 72 and only air, a response waveform 88 of only a high frequency component is obtained as shown in FIG. 9 (Case 1 in Table 1). This is not a response waveform based on the ink in the ink pressure chamber 72, but a vibration waveform of a unimorph structure composed of an elastic body 73 and a piezoelectric element 74. The unimorph structure functions as a displacement sensor instead of a pressure sensor. It is a waveform by fulfilling. The natural frequency of this unimorph structure is generally on the order of 500 kHz to 1 MHz, and is extremely high, so that a response waveform 88 of only a high frequency component is obtained.

Further, when the power line that electrically connects the drive circuit 62 and the piezoelectric element 74 is disconnected, the response waveform does not appear (Case 6 in Table 1).

In this manner, response waveforms corresponding to the status of the ink jet recording heads 32 1 to 32 n are input from the piezoelectric element 74 to the abnormality detection unit 66.

The abnormality detection unit 66 includes an amplifier 66A, an A / D converter 66B, a calculation unit 66C, and a storage unit 66D.

The amplifier 66A detects the response waveform input from the piezoelectric element 74 and amplifies the amplitude of the response waveform. The amplified response waveform is converted into digital data by the A / D converter 66B, and then the frequency characteristic is analyzed by the calculation unit 66C to calculate the spectrum during the recording operation. The storage unit 66D stores the spectrum at the time of initial ejection calculated by analyzing the frequency characteristics of the response waveform input at the time of initial ejection. In the present embodiment, the initial ejection is performed immediately after the ink jet recording apparatus 12 is brought into the initial state by performing the process of sucking the ink in the nozzles of the recording head 33 by the maintenance mechanism 34 when the ink jet recording apparatus 12 is turned on. A description will be given assuming that the ink is discharged before the operation.

The piezoelectric element 74 corresponds to vibration detection means of the ink jet recording apparatus of the present invention, the calculation unit 66C corresponds to frequency analysis means, the storage unit 66D corresponds to storage means, and the control unit 64 determines determination means. It corresponds to.

FIG. 10 shows the flow of response waveform data processing executed by the main circuit 60.

When power is supplied to the ink jet recording apparatus 12 to enable a recording operation, a response signal at the time of initial ejection is detected by outputting a drive signal.

In general, when the number of ink ejections is normal, stable ejection is performed from the ink jet recording heads 32 1 to 32 n. However, by continuing the ink ejection, the gas dissolved in the ink is precipitated and fine bubbles are formed. Since the generated bubbles grow and the generated bubbles are likely to be unstable and non-discharged, first, a response waveform at the time of initial discharge is detected before recording.

In the next step 102, the response waveform detected in step 100 is subjected to fast Fourier transform (FFT) in a predetermined sampling period to analyze the frequency characteristics. The predetermined sampling period is as shown in FIG. 11 in order to exclude that the peak 82 based on the drive signal corresponding to the image data applied to the piezoelectric element 74 included in the drive voltage waveform 80 affects the response waveform. In addition, the sampling period T from t 1 after a certain time after each peak 82 falls to the reference voltage (0 V in FIGS. 6, 7, and 8) to t 2 at the start of the reference rise of the next peak 82. Show.

A detailed description of FFT can be referred to in general textbooks (for example, vibration engineering handbook editorial committee: “vibration engineering handbook”, Yokendo, Sho 51-11), and is omitted here.

In the next step 104, it cuts out a specific frequency from the conversion result of the Fourier transform, to calculate the spectrum X 0 at the initial discharge. The specific frequency band is, for example, in the range of 5 kHz to 1 MHz. This is because by cutting below 5 kHz, the power frequency and the low frequency due to the structural vibration of the ink jet recording heads 32 1 to 32 n as a whole, the mechanical vibration due to various parts provided in the ink jet recording apparatus 12 such as paper conveyance, etc. This is because a vibration component is removed and a high frequency noise component emitted from a circuit component or the like is removed by cutting a frequency exceeding 1 MHz.

The calculation of the spectrum X 0 at the time of initial ejection is performed as follows.

First, a frequency spectrum x (m, L) for a time series time signal x (t) that is an input response waveform is defined as shown in the following equation (1).

Figure 0004561229
Figure 0004561229

N is the number of samplings from time t 1 to t 2 . ω (k) is expressed by the following equation (2) when −N / 2 ≦ k ≦ N / 2,

Figure 0004561229
Figure 0004561229

ω (k) is “0” when k is outside the range of −N / 2 ≦ k ≦ N / 2. m is the time t1 to t). Note that both time and frequency are discrete data.

From the above equation (1), the spectrum X 0 at the time of initial ejection is defined as the following equation (3).

Figure 0004561229
Figure 0004561229

Based on the equation (3), the spectrum X 0 at the initial discharge is calculated, then at step 106, recording the spectrum X 0 at calculated initial discharge in the storage unit 66D.

In the next step 108, the response waveform at the time of the recording operation is detected, and in the next step 110, the response waveform detected in the step 108 is sampled from time t 1 to t 2 in substantially the same manner as in the step 102. Analyze the characteristics.

In the next step 112, the specific frequency is extracted from the analysis result of step 110, and the spectrum X i at the time of recording ejection is expressed by the following equation (4) from the above equation (1), substantially the same as the processing of step 104. The spectrum X i at the time of recording discharge is calculated based on the equation (4).

Figure 0004561229
Figure 0004561229

In step 116, the spectrum X 0 during initial discharge stored in the storage unit 66D in step 106, and spectrum X i in the recording operation calculated in step 112, from the spectrum X 0 at the initial discharge A correlation function ρ (i) with the spectrum X i during the recording operation is calculated.

Figure 0004561229
Figure 0004561229

In the formula (5), if the specific frequency band cut out from the result of Fourier transform in step 112 is in the range of 5 kHz to 1 MHz, f1 is 5 kHz which is the lower limit frequency, and f2 is 1 MHz which is the upper limit frequency. Become.

Next, in step 118, whether or not the value of the correlation function ρ (i) calculated in step 116 is equal to or less than a lower limit value of a range (details will be described later) indicating that the inkjet recording heads 32 1 to 32 n are normal. Determine whether.

Here, the range indicating normal is a normal ejection state in which the ink jet recording heads 32 1 to 32 n normally eject ink, and a state in which large bubbles or small bubbles are present in the ink pressure chamber 72. Alternatively, it is determined by performing a reproduction experiment of various states such as a state in which a power line electrically connecting the piezoelectric element 74 and the drive circuit 62 is disconnected. In the present embodiment, as a result of the reproduction experiment, for example, a range of 0.8 to 1.5 will be described as a range of a value of a correlation function indicating a normal state.

Specifically, as shown in FIG. 12, when the number of ink ejections is normal, stable ejection is performed from the ink jet recording heads 32 1 to 32 n and the value of the correlation function is within a predetermined range. When a predictive phenomenon occurs due to deposition of gas dissolved in the ink and generation of fine bubbles by continuing ink ejection, the value of the correlation function starts to fluctuate. When the number of ink ejections further increases and the value of the correlation function falls below 0.8, which is the lower limit value, ink ejection becomes unstable or non-ejection due to the growth of fine bubbles caused by the sign phenomenon. Although illustration is omitted, when the bubble further grows and reaches the entire ink flow path, the value of the correlation function exceeds the upper limit of 1.5. Similarly, when there is no ink in the ink pressure chamber 72, the value of the correlation function is a value exceeding the upper limit of 1.5.

If the determination in step 118 is affirmative, it is determined in the next step 120 that fine bubbles are present in the ink pressure chamber 72.

In the next step 122, the recording operation is temporarily interrupted, and after the recovery process for sucking the ink in the nozzles by the maintenance mechanism 34, the process returns to step 108. If the piezoelectric element 74 is driven at a predetermined frequency at the same time as the restoration process, bubbles in the ink jet recording heads 32 1 to 32 n can be efficiently sucked out together with the ink.

In the present embodiment, the lower limit value is assumed to be 0.8. However, as shown in FIG. 12, the recording operation is temporarily stopped and the recovery process is performed when the predictive phenomenon occurs. .9 may be set. In this way, recovery processing can be performed even when a sign phenomenon occurs.

On the other hand, if the result in Step 118 is negative, the process proceeds to Step 124, where the correlation function ρ (i) calculated in Step 116 is equal to or greater than the upper limit value of the range indicating that the inkjet recording heads 32 1 to 32 n are normal. It is determined whether or not. If the result of step 124 is affirmative and the value of the correlation function is the upper limit, that is, 1.5 or more, bubbles of a size over the entire ink flow path are formed in the inkjet recording heads 32 1 to 32 n in the next 126. After determining that the ink is present or there is no ink in the ink jet recording heads 32 1 to 32 n , the process proceeds to step 122.

On the other hand, if the result in step 124 is negative, the process proceeds to step 128 to determine whether or not the value of the correlation function calculated in step 116 is 0. If the result is negative, in step 130 the ink jet recording head 32 1 is determined. ˜32 n is determined to be a state where ink is normally ejected normally.

Next, in step 131, it is determined whether or not the recording operation for recording an image based on the image data is to be ended. If the determination is affirmative, this routine is ended.

On the other hand, when the result in step 128 is affirmative, in the next step 132, it is determined that the power line electrically connecting the piezoelectric element 74 and the drive circuit 62 is disconnected, and in the next step 134, the recording operation is performed. And the warning information indicating that the power line connecting the piezoelectric element 74 and the drive circuit 62 is disconnected in the inkjet recording heads 32 1 to 32 n is displayed on the display unit 31, and then this routine is finished. .

As described above, according to the ink jet recording apparatus 12 of the present embodiment, the pressure response of the ink in the ink flow paths of the ink jet recording heads 32 1 to 32 n during the recording operation is obtained using the piezoelectric element 74 as a pressure sensor. The response waveform shown is detected, the frequency characteristic is analyzed to calculate the spectrum during the recording operation, and the ink jet recording head 32 1 is used by using the correlation function between the calculated spectrum during the recording operation and the spectrum during the initial ejection. It is possible to judge by quantifying the ink discharge status of ˜32 n .

Accordingly, it is possible to easily determine whether or not the ink jet recording heads 32 1 to 32 n are in a state where ink can be normally ejected during the recording operation.

Further, to detect the response waveform, detection based on a result, since the ink jet recording head 32 1 to 32 n can determine whether a normal or abnormal, with a simple configuration, the inkjet recording heads 32 1 - It can be determined whether or not 32 n is in a normal state.

Furthermore, when the ink jet recording heads 32 1 to 32 n have determined that ink ejection failure has occurred due to the presence of air bubbles or the absence of ink, the maintenance mechanism 34 can perform recovery processing, so at an appropriate timing. Recovery processing can be executed.

In addition, after extracting a specific frequency from the result of Fourier transform, the spectrum at the initial ejection and the printing operation is calculated, so the spectrum at the initial ejection can be calculated from the result of cutting various noise components, and the noise from the outside it can be accurately without being influence detect abnormality of the inkjet recording head 32 1 to 32 n.

In this embodiment, during the recording operation, the case has been described where the ink jet recording head 32 1 to 32 n determines whether the ink discharge state capable normally, during recovery execution of step 122 Further, it may be determined whether or not the recovery processing of the ink jet recording heads 32 1 to 32 n has been completed.

In this case, in the recovery process of the above step 122, by sucking ink from the nozzles 75 while driving the piezoelectric element 74 at a predetermined frequency, the bubbles in the ink flow path are also in the recovery process as in the recording operation. It becomes possible to detect a response waveform in accordance with the presence or absence of. Specifically, during the restoration process in step 122, the same process as in steps 108 to 116 is performed to calculate the spectrum during the restoration process, and the calculated spectrum during the restoration process and the initial ejection time are calculated. A correlation function with the spectrum is obtained, and the restoration process and the processing of the above steps 108 to 116 are repeatedly executed until it is determined that the correlation function value is within a range indicating normal, and the calculated correlation function value Is determined to be within a predetermined range indicating normal, it may be determined that the recovery process has been completed and the recovery process may be terminated.

As described above, it is possible to determine whether or not the discharge of the bubbles in the ink jet recording heads 32 1 to 32 n has been completed by detecting the response waveform even during the recovery process, that is, whether or not the recovery process has been completed. Therefore, excessive suction of ink in the recovery process can be prevented.

When the response waveform is detected during the recovery process, when the ink supply system of the ink jet recording heads 32 1 to 32 n is abnormal and the ink is not normally supplied to the ink pressure chamber 72, the maintenance mechanism 34. The ink in the inkjet recording heads 32 1 to 32 n disappears due to the ink suction operation. As a result, during the restoration process, a response waveform including a high frequency component as shown in FIG. 9 is detected, and as shown in FIG. 13, the value of the correlation function equal to or higher than the upper limit value of a predetermined range indicating normality is calculated. May be. Therefore, when the value of the correlation function that is equal to or greater than the upper limit value of the predetermined range is calculated during the restoration process, the main circuit 60 determines that the cause of non-ejection is a cause other than the occurrence of bubbles. The recovery process and the recording operation may be stopped and the warning information may be displayed on the display unit 31.

As described above, when such an abnormal discharge state occurs by setting a predetermined range and setting an upper limit value and a lower limit value as a correlation function indicating that the inkjet recording heads 32 1 to 32 n are in a normal state. Even so, it is possible to accurately determine the abnormality of the ink jet recording heads 32 1 to 32 n .

In the present embodiment, the response waveform at the initial ejection detected in step 100 has been described as a response waveform when the inkjet recording heads 32 1 to 32 n are normal. Even when air bubbles are present in the ink flow path, it is possible to determine whether the inkjet recording heads 32 1 to 32 n are normal or abnormal during the recording operation.

Even if air bubbles are present in the ink flow path from the initial discharge and the response waveform at the initial discharge was not due to normal discharge, that is, even if the discharge was abnormal from the beginning, Since the response waveform varies, a waveform different from the response waveform at the time of initial ejection and the response waveform at the time of ejection after that can be obtained. For this reason, it is possible to determine the ejection abnormality of the ink jet recording heads 32 1 to 32 n based on the correlation function between the initial ejection and the recording operation. In this case, it repeated until the value of processing the correlation function of step 108 to step 122 is stabilized, reconfigure spectrum after the value of the correlation function is stabilized as a spectrum X 0 in the initial discharge, in step 106 Re-record in the storage unit 66D.

Accordingly, even when it is difficult for the ink jet recording heads 32 1 to 32 n to normally eject ink during the initial ejection, the ink jet recording heads 32 1 to 32 n are abnormal during the recording operation. It becomes possible to detect something easily.

In this embodiment, the case where the spectrum at the time of initial ejection is stored in the storage unit 66D by performing the processing of Step 100 to Step 106 before execution of the recording operation has been described. However, the storage unit 66D is not nonvolatile. The spectrum when it is determined that ink can be normally ejected during the recording operation may be stored as the spectrum during initial ejection. In this case, the recording operation is executed without executing the calculation process for calculating the spectrum at the initial discharge before executing the recording operation, and the spectrum at the initial discharge stored in the storage unit 66D is referred to during the recording operation. Thus, the value of the correlation function may be calculated.
