本発明は、変換機能を有するメールサーバ及び携帯端末に関し、特に絵文字や文字色等の特殊表示用のコード又はタグを含む電子メールを、異なる通信事業者(キャリア)を介して送受信するのに好適な変換機能を有するメールサーバ及び携帯端末に関する。

従来、通信事業者各社では、それぞれ独自のタグやコードやHTML(Hyper Text Markup Language)文法を用いて電子メールをなすデータを規定している。また、電子メールに加える絵文字(アイコンを含む)についても、通信事業者毎に異なるタグやコードやHTML文法で作成されている。そして、従来においては、受信した電子メール文章内の単語を絵文字に自動的に変換し、メール文章をコンパクト化して表示する技術も考え出されている。

【発明が解決しようとする課題】
しかしながら、従来においては、異なる通信事業者にそれぞれ対応した2つの携帯電話間で電子メールの送受信をする場合、送信側の携帯電話で通信事業者独自の特殊な絵文字を使用して電子メールを作成し送信すると、受信側の携帯電話ではその特殊な絵文字を正しく表示できず文字化けを起こしてしまうという問題点があった。

また、近年、携帯端末の電子メールの表現方法を広げるために、文字を太字や斜体にしたり、色彩を付けたり、又は点滅させたりするなどの手法が取られている。このような文字の修飾も絵文字同様にタグやコードを用いて記述されているが、通信事業者毎に異なるタグやコードを用いている場合は正しく表示できず文字化けを起こしてしまうという問題点があった。

本発明は、上記問題点を解決するためになされたものであり、異なる通信事業者に対応した通信端末間において、通信事業者独自の絵文字や文字の修飾等の特殊表示用のコードやタグを電子メールに含めて送受信しても、文字化けが生ずることなく正常に送受信して表示することができる変換機能を有するメールサーバ及び携帯端末を提供することを目的とする。

以下、図面を参照し、本発明の一実施形態に係る変換機能を有するメールサーバ及び携帯端末について説明する。本実施形態では、携帯端末の一例として携帯電話を挙げて説明する。又、絵文字を例にして変換機能を説明する。

図1は本発明の実施形態に係る絵文字変換機能を有するメールサーバ(絵文字変換サーバ)が用いられる通信システムの概要を示す概念図である。携帯電話11,12は、電子メールの作成及び送受信機能を有する。携帯電話11は、例えば第1通信事業者の社内規格などに対応したものであり、第1通信事業者独自の絵文字コードを用いて電子メールを作成して送受信することができる。また、携帯電話11は、第1通信事業者独自の絵文字コードで作成された絵文字をその電子メールに加えることができる。ここで、絵文字とは、アイコンを含む概念であり、文字データ又は記号データの組み合わせで描かれたイラストも含む。さらに携帯電話11は、第1通信事業者以外の通信事業者で規定された絵文字についてコード(データ)を電子メールに加えることができ、後述する他の機能も有している。

ステップS1でNoの場合、絵文字変換サーバ6は、その電子メールに絵文字が含まれているか判断する(S2)。ステップS2でYesの場合、絵文字変換サーバ6の絵文字コード変換手段が、電子メールに含まれている絵文字を示すコードを送信先(受信者側)の通信事業者のコードに変換する。例えば、第1通信事業者のコードを第2通信事業者のコードに変換する(S3)。次いで、絵文字変換サーバ6は、ステップS3で変換されたコードを用いて電子メールを組立直し作成する(S4)。この作成された電子メールは、絵文字変換サーバ6から受信者側のメールサーバ51,52へ送信され、さらにメールサーバ51,52から受信者の携帯電話11,12に送信される。

次に、携帯電話11における絵文字付き電子メールに関する機能について、図5を参照して説明する。図5は、携帯電話11における絵文字付加情報の処理例を示す説明図である。携帯電話11(例えばA社の製品)は、電子メールの作成及び編集時において、文章(テキスト本文)に絵文字を挿入する際に、絵文字テーブル(例えばA社独自のもの)を参照し、引用した絵文字(例えば電話のマーク)に対応する引き数(a−1)を、絵文字付加情報として電子メールのヘッダに付加する。ここで、絵文字を複数使用しているときは、その絵文字に対応する引き数を列挙して付加する。なお、電子メールのヘッダには、宛先(受信者)のメールアドレスと送り主(送信者)のメールアドレスとが含まれている。このように絵文字付加情報(引き数)がヘッダに付加された電子メールは、携帯電話11からメールサーバ51へ送信される。
