衣料用編織物を軽量化し、かつ保温性を高めるために潜在巻縮性の高い糸を用いたり、繊維に巻縮加工を施したりすることが行われている。また、繊維自体を軽量化して上記編織物を更に軽量化するため、中空繊維を用いることも行われており、この中空繊維については中空率50%以下のものが知られている(特公昭42−2428号公報参照)。また、中空率の異なる2種以上の熱可塑性中空フィラメント糸を混合し、仮撚加工を施すことにより、風合いや外観に特徴を与えることも知られている(特開昭49−100358号公報参照)。
