【0001】

The present invention relates to smokable filler materials, and more particularly to smokable filler materials used in cigarettes.
[0002]
For many years, filling materials suitable for use as tobacco replacement materials have been proposed. However, little research has been conducted on materials obtained from fruits. When fruits are used, see British Patent Specification 141288, which is a component that is usually added in small amounts to provide sugars and amino acids or as a structure-former. Similarly, U.S. Pat. No. 4,083,371 uses a similar material comprising husk with concentrated fruit and optional carob flour. In both of these prior documents, the organic combustible material, i.e. the main fuel material, occupying the majority of the structure-forming material is selected from rice husk, straw, bran or shell, i.e. cereal or nut shell.
[0003]
The present invention also provides a smokable filler material wherein the fruit material is or is one of the primary combustible fuel materials of the smokable filler material.
[0004]
The filler material of the present invention can also be used with or without another tobacco material, whether chopped tobacco leaves or chopped recycled tobacco sheet material.
[0005]
Furthermore, the smokable filler material of the present invention has a smoking quality that allows a product developer to select a flavor and casing suitable for providing an acceptable smoking and flavor.
[0006]
The smoke obtained from the smokable filler material according to the present invention can significantly reduce certain smoke components.
[0007]
The present invention provides a smokable filler material comprising a non-combustible inorganic filler material, a binder, and a fruit material as the main organic combustible fuel material.
[0008]
The inorganic filler material is preferably included in the range of 30 to 90% by weight of the dry material.
[0009]
The smokable filler material produced by casting is preferably in the range of 50-80% by weight of dry material, more preferably more than 60%, even more preferably more than 70% inorganic filler material including.
[0010]
Alternatively, the smokable filler material produced by the extrusion process comprises inorganic filler material, preferably in the range of 30 to 70% by weight of dry material. More preferably in the range of 35-60% by weight of dry material, even more preferably in the range of 45-55%, and even more preferably about 50% inorganic filler material.
[0011]
The binder is preferably contained in the range of 3 to 25% by weight of the dry material. More preferably the binder is comprised between 5 and 15% by weight of the dry material, even more preferably less than 12% and even more preferably less than 10%. Effectively, the binder is included at about 7.5% by weight of the dry material.
[0012]
The fruit material is preferably contained in the range of 2 to 50% by weight of the dry material. When making a smokeable filler material by casting, the fruit material is more preferably in the range of 5 to 15%, even more preferably 10% or more, and is particularly effective when included at about 12.5%. is there. When producing a smokable filler material by an extrusion process, the fruit material is preferably included in the range of 2 to 50% by weight of the dry material. Further, it is more preferably contained in the range of 10 to 30% by weight of the dry material, and even more preferably about 20%.
[0013]
The smokable filler material made by casting is effective if it contains 10-20% fruit, 10% sodium alginate, 70% chalk and 10% glycerol. An acceptable filler material can be made by using 7.5% sodium alginate and increasing the fruit content accordingly.
[0014]
The smokable filler material made by extrusion contains 10-20% fruit, 20% starch, 50% chalk, 10% hydroxypropylcellulose, and 0-10% glycerol. And effective.
[0015]
Non-combustible inorganic filler materials are silicates or aluminosilicates such as pearlite, aragonite, diatomaceous earth, talc and colloidal silica, metal oxides such as magnesium oxide, magnesium nitrate, calcium or magnesium carbonate or alumina, metal salts Alternatively, an inorganic filler material selected from the group consisting of hydroxides is preferable. The inorganic filler material is suitably a low density material of less than 5 g / cm 3 , preferably less than 4 g / cm 3 , more preferably less than 3 g / cm 3 . Mixtures of these fillers can also be used.
[0016]
The smokable filler material may comprise an organic filler. While this organic filler alone does not easily maintain combustion, it is useful to be an inert or nearly inert material that is more flammable in the mixture, ie, maintains combustion. Suitable organic fillers include insoluble alginate such as calcium or magnesium alginate, calcium pectate, treated or untreated wood pulp or unmodified cellulose such as alpha cellulose. Mixtures of inert organic fillers and inorganic fillers may also be used in the present invention.
[0017]
The organic filler is effective when included in the range of 0 to 40%. The organic filler serves to improve the ash forming properties of the smokable filler material. Also includes flammable organic materials with a natural low nitrogen content, ie, less than 0.25%, more effectively less than 0.20%, and even more effectively less than 0.1% by dry weight of nitrogen And effective.
[0018]
The binder is effective to be an organic binder such as an alginate, rubber, cellulose (modified or natural), pectin or pectin-based binder, carboxymethylcellulose sodium or sodium alginate such as a group I or II metal salt.
[0019]
More preferred binders are alginic acid based binders which are soluble alginates such as ammonium alginate, sodium alginate, sodium calcium alginate, calcium ammonium alginate, potassium alginate, triethanolamine alginate and propylene glycol alginate. These alginic acid-based binders provide preferred smoking mechanism, taste and flavor characteristics for the smokable filler of the present invention.
[0020]
Examples of the cellulose binder include cellulose derivatives such as sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, methyl cellulose, hydroxypropyl cellulose, hydroxyethyl cellulose, and cellulose ether. These binders are effective when extruding.
[0021]
Other organic binders include gums such as gum arabic, gatch gum, gum tragacanth, caraya gum, locust bean, acacia gum, guar gum, quince seeds or xanthan gum, or gels such as agar, agarose, carrageenan, hibamata and furcelleran. Can be mentioned. Pectin and pectin-based materials can also be used as binders. Starch can also be used as an organic binder. Other suitable rubbers may be selected with reference to handbooks such as “Industrial Rubber” by Academia Press, Ed Whistler. Inorganic non-combustible binders such as cements such as Portland cement can also be used. A combination of the above binders can also be used.
[0022]
In the case where the binder is an alginate, particularly a monovalent alginate, it is desirable to maintain the pH of the slurry between 3 and 5 during the processing step in order to improve the binding performance of the alginate. This may be done by balancing the content of fruit and inorganic filler or neutralizing the slurry by adding an acidic material such as citric acid or a basic material such as sodium carbonate.
[0023]
The fruit material is a fruit concentrate, ie fruit juice. Further, one or more of those derived from whole fruit, dried fruit, fruit pulp, fruit paste, fruit puree, fruit powdered extract or liquid residue produced when producing a liquid extract may be added. If a liquid extract is used, it is preferred that this extract is not a pure saccharide from fruit. Granulating the fruit material, for example, by mixing it with liquid fruit or syrup and an organic filler, or drying and granulating, is effective in some fruit derivatives to facilitate processing.
[0024]
The selected fruit preferably has a sugar content as low as 70% or less. In the case of fruits containing a large amount of sugar, it is effective to remove the sugar in advance so that the amount of sugar is preferably less than 20% when the fruit material is added.
[0025]
The fruit material is selected from processed fruit materials such as soft fruit, citrus fruit, berries or dried granules or dietary fiber. The fruit material is selected with a low nitrogen content, preferably less than 1.8%, more preferably less than 1.0%, even more preferably less than 0.6% on a dry weight basis. The fruit is preferably one or more selected from pineapple, mango, raisins, apples, bananas, apricots, lemons, peaches, kiwis and grapes. Of these, pineapple, mango and raisins are particularly preferred. These fruit seeds are not currently useful in the present invention.
[0026]
Each powdered extract or concentrate may be mixed with water until each is completely dissolved. The fruit pulp is preferably crushed and finely divided, while the fibers remain relatively inert. The fiber may be separated from the liquid to change the fiber to liquid ratio, if necessary. When using dried fruits, the fruits are preferably boiled in water. When using a fruit rich in sugar, it is preferably blended in order to boil and filter the fruit with, for example, a certain percentage of organic acid to remove the sugar, and then to make a uniform mixture or paste.
[0027]
The aerosol source preferably comprises glycerol and / or other aerosol forming compounds exemplified in Applicant's PCT application WO 96/07336. These other aerosol forming compounds include polyhydric alcohols such as propylene glycol and triethylene glycol, ethyl citrate, triacetin or triethylene glycol diacetate (TEGDA), and high boiling hydrocarbons. Other suitable aerosol forming means known to those skilled in the art may also be used.
[0028]
The aerosol generating means is preferably incorporated into the filler material at a rate of 0 to 30%. If the smokable filler material is made by a drum casting process, the aerosol generating means is more preferably included in the range of 5 to 15% by weight of the dry material, and even more preferably in a proportion of about 10%. When a smokable filler material is produced by the extrusion process, the aerosol generating means is more preferably included in the range of 0 to 10%, even more preferably 3 to 5% by weight of the dry material. The aerosol generating means is pumped into the barrel of the extruder. A plasticizer is also required. If the plasticizer is the same as one of those listed above as suitable aerosol forming means, it is preferred that the plasticizer be present in an amount such that it primarily does not generate an aerosol. The additional ingredients, i.e. ingredients other than the filler, fruit and binder, are selected according to the desired final material properties.
[0029]
Other taste and flavor materials such as flavors from rhizomes such as coffee, cocoa, caramel, ginger or licorice, tobacco dust or tobacco extract are also present in a proportion of less than 10%, preferably less than 5% of the weight of the dried material. It may be added to the smokable filler material.
[0030]
The smokable filler material of the present invention is preferably prepared by mixing all powdered materials (excluding the binder), adding water, and then gradually introducing the binder while high shearing the mixture. . Thereafter, water may be further added to obtain a desired viscosity.
[0031]
The final slurry viscosity is in the range of 60,000 to 400,000 centipoise, preferably 150,000 to 250,000 centipoise. The final viscosity depends on the method of casting (drum or band), extrusion or papermaking process used.
[0032]
The final slurry is suitable for casting, where the slurry is stored, conditioned, cut and made into a smokable filler material.
[0033]
Apart from the above method, the smokable filler material of the present invention may be made by extrusion, wherein the extrudate becomes a foamed or non-foamed material. Suitable expansion media or foaming means are described in detail in the Applicant's PCT application WO 96/07336, the description relating to the expansion media disclosed therein being incorporated herein by reference. Suitable swelling media include polysaccharides such as starch, pullulan, cellulose derivatives, solid blowing agents, in situ gas agents, organic gas agents, inorganic gas agents and volatile liquid blowing agents, inorganic salts and organic acids, etc. Is mentioned. The expansion medium may be partially replaced with an organic filler. Inflation medium, 0 to 40% by weight of dry material, preferably less than 30%, more preferably about 20% exists. Water is the most common preferred volatile swelling agent in such expansion systems. Other swelling agents are well known. The smokable filler material is advantageously prepared by mixing all the powdered material including the binder and then pumping water and glycerol into the barrel of the extruder. The extruded material may be a rod, strand, filament or sheet material, which is then cut to obtain a filler material. If the extruded strand or filamentary material is unable to draw air or smoke along it, the strand or filament may be woven or twisted. If the filler material is extruded as a rod, other downstream processing techniques may be employed to improve the pressure drop if desired. Various extrusion shapes are described in detail in the Applicant's PCT application, which is hereby incorporated by reference.
[0034]
The smokable filler material of the present invention may include a combustion additive to enhance its smoking characteristics. Depending on the characteristics of the filler, a combustion accelerator or a combustion inhibitor is selected as the combustion additive. Suitable combustion additives are selected from one or more of Group I or II metal salts such as acetates, citrates and other combustion promoters known to those skilled in the art. Suitable combustion inhibitors are, for example, magnesium hydroxide, monoammonium phosphate or magnesium chloride.
[0035]
The smokable filler material of the present invention may contain an ash enhancer, which is advantageously present in the filler in the range of 0-5%. Suitable ash enhancers include one or more of mica, perlite, clay, such as meteorite, kaolinite, talc, saponite, bentonite, and ash enhancers such as disodium orthophosphate, sodium carbonate or diammonium phosphate. It is done.
[0036]
The present invention also provides a smoking article comprising a smokable filler material rod according to the present invention wound on a wrapping paper.
[0037]
The smokable filler material of the present invention may constitute 100% of the rod wound with wrapping paper. Alternatively, the smokable filler material may be blended with tobacco-containing sheets such as chopped tobacco or recycled tobacco sheets. The amount of tobacco material in such a blend is preferably no more than 40%, more preferably less than 30% by weight of the final blend.
[0038]
Suitable wrapping paper is paper or a substantially non-flammable wrapping paper as detailed in WO 96/07336. The substantially non-combustible wrapping paper described in WO 96/07336 is hereby incorporated by reference. This substantially non-combustible wrapping paper advantageously comprises at least 65% inorganic particulate filler material, such as the inorganic materials described above.
[0039]
Conventional cellulose pulp wrapping paper has a transmittance of 2 to 300 CU, preferably less than 100 CU. Such a wrapping paper is also a paper with a low total filler amount as disclosed in the applicant's European patent application No. 0404580, for example containing less than 14% oxide or magnesium hydroxide.
[0040]
The present invention will be described based on the following examples so that the present invention can be easily understood and easily implemented.
[0041]
Example 1
A general process will be described below.
First, water, glycerol and chalk are mixed in a Silverstone mixer until a uniform slurry is produced. The fruit powder or concentrate is separately mixed with a small amount of water and stirred until completely dissolved. When using dried fruits, simmer for 20-30 minutes in tap water and mix with a food processor until a uniform paste is formed. Depending on the amount of sugar in the fruit used, filtration may be necessary to remove organic acids and sugars.
The resulting fruit paste or solution is added to the chalk slurry and mixed. It is important to adjust the pH depending on the alginate binder used. Because, when pH is low, the binding property of sodium alginate or ammonium alginate binder is adversely affected, and the quality of the obtained sheet material is lowered, so that the strength is insufficient, and after cutting, it is completely sent to the cigarette making machine. It is because it becomes impossible.
Finally, the binder is gradually added into the mixture with additional water as needed. The final viscosity of the slurry is ideal if it is in the range of 150,000 to 250,000 centipoise.
In the following examples, the slurry was cast on a drum caster to form a uniform sheet material. The obtained sheet material was stored at about 60% relative humidity (RH) for 24 hours before being cut using a Hauni tobacco cutting machine or paper cutting machine. After conditioning the strands for 48 hours, the material was ready to be made into cigarettes on a cigarette maker.
[0042]
Example 2
As a representative sample, a filler material capable of smoking was prepared using three kinds of fruits. Concentrated pineapple (75 ° BRIX) obtained from Hacks in London, powdered mango extract obtained from Key Ingredient in Cheltenham, and raisins (whole fruit) obtained from Tesco Supermarket were cast individually. The sheet material was processed and cut. The component ratio of each obtained sheet material is 7.5% for the fruit material, 12.5% for the sodium alginate binder, 70% for the coarse chalk inorganic filler, and 10% for the glycerol aerosol generator.
Each cut material was used to make a cigarette with a diameter of 24.70 mm and a length of 64 mm with a 5 CU wrap with a 20 mm cellulose acetate filter and 0.55% potassium citrate combustion additive. . Such a cigarette structure allows a direct comparison with a control commercially available cigarette, in this case a king size, full flavor Virginia style cigarette.
The cigarettes were smoked under standard machine smoking conditions of 35 ml smoke per second for 2 seconds. Smoked a statistically appropriate number of cigarettes (see “The Analyst,” Vol. 113, pages 1509-1513, published in October 1988 by Proctor, C et al.). In this case, 5 cigarettes were smoked per filter pad at one port, which was performed at 4 ports and the average was taken.
The amount of mainstream smoke emitted is shown in Table 1, and the amount of mainstream smoke reduction for symmetrical cigarettes is shown in Table 2.

Example 3
Other experimental mixtures were made using the samples shown in Table 3.
[0046]
[Table 3]
[0047]
As is evident from all these examples, the use of the smokable filler material of the present invention provides a very advantageous effect on smoke emissions.
The table shows in particular that the smokable filler material of the present invention significantly dilutes mainstream and sidestream smoke.
Furthermore, the smokable filler material of the present invention is well compatible with conventional cigarette manufacturing conditions, and thus does not require modification of existing equipment.
When the smokable filler material of the present invention is used, smoke with less nitrogen-containing compounds is obtained. In addition, despite the high content of non-combustible inorganic fillers, a substantial smoke aerosol is generated, consisting mainly of glycerol and water.
The final product is also a product with low nitrogen and low average ammonia nitrogen.

Example 4
The general process of extrusion will be described below.
A dried mixture is made with chalk (50%), dried or powdered fruit (20%), pregelatinized starch (20%), and hydroxypropylcellulose (10%). This mixture is fed into the extruder and water and glycerol (3-5%) are also fed into the extruder. The extrusion barrel is heated at several points along it to form extrusion zones that are typically heated to 70 ° C, 100 ° C, 110 ° C, 120 ° C and 130 ° C. The pressure at the die is about 30 bar and in any case should not exceed 100 bar. The screw shape of the extruder must be such that enough energy is given to the mixture so that the material becomes a blown extrudate as it exits the extrusion die. The formed extrudate is tubular or foamed. Ideally, the tubular extrudate has a small diameter hole extending longitudinally through its center.
The extrudate is removed from the extruder by a suitable take-off system.
