Description

【0001】
他の1つは、STN(Super Twisted Nematic)方式である。

TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a method for driving a liquid crystal display device, and more particularly, to a method for driving a liquid crystal display device that can be used for display for a long time.
[0002]
[Prior art]
At present, most of liquid crystal display elements are of a twisted nematic (TN) type. This TN type liquid crystal display device uses a nematic liquid crystal composition and is roughly divided into two. One of them is an active matrix system in which a switching element is provided in each pixel. For example, a device using a thin film transistor (TFT) for a TN display system (TN-TFT system) is known. . The other is an STN (Super Twisted Nematic) method. Although the STN system has improved contrast and viewing angle dependency compared to a conventional simple matrix system using a TN type, the STN system is not suitable for moving image display because of its slow response speed. In addition, there is a disadvantage that the display quality is lower than that of the active matrix system using a TFT. As a result, the TN-TFT method is now mainstream in the market.
[0003]
On the other hand, in response to a demand for higher image quality, a method for improving the viewing angle has been researched and developed, and has been put to practical use. As a result, the current mainstream of the high-performance liquid crystal display is a method using a compensation film in a TN mode, an in-plane switching (IPS) mode, or a multi-domain vertical alignment (MVA). There are three types of TFT type active matrix liquid crystal display devices of the Vertica1 (Aligned) mode. In these active matrix liquid crystal display devices, normally, an image signal is rewritten at 60 Hz to perform positive / negative writing at 30 Hz, and the time of one field is about 16.7 ms (millisecond) (the sum of both the positive and negative fields). The death time is called one frame, which is about 33.3 ms). On the other hand, the response speed of the current liquid crystal is about this frame time even in the fastest state. Therefore, when displaying a video signal composed of a moving image, displaying a high-speed computer image, or displaying a high-speed game image, a response speed faster than the current frame time is required.
[0004]
On the other hand, a field-sequential (time-division) color liquid crystal display device that temporally switches a backlight, which is illumination light of the liquid crystal display device, to red, green, and blue in order to achieve higher definition is also being studied. In this method, there is no need to spatially dispose the color filters, so that it is possible to achieve three times higher definition than in the past. In a field sequential liquid crystal display device, one color needs to be displayed in 1/3 of one field, so that the time available for display is about 5 ms. Therefore, the liquid crystal itself is required to respond faster than 5 ms. As a liquid crystal capable of realizing such a high-speed response, a wave crystal having spontaneous polarization, such as a ferroelectric liquid crystal or an antiferroelectric liquid crystal, is being studied. Also, in nematic liquid crystals, by increasing the dielectric anisotropy, lowering the viscosity, reducing the thickness, changing the liquid crystal alignment to a pie-type alignment, etc., and devising the drive voltage waveform Speeding up is being considered.
[0005]
Here, the time during which voltage and charge are actually written to the liquid crystal portion in the active matrix liquid crystal display element is only the selection time (writing time) of each scanning line. This time is 16.7 [mu] s (microsecond) when writing is normally performed in one field time with 1000 lines, and particularly about 5 [mu] s when performing field sequential driving. At present, there is hardly any liquid crystal or liquid crystal use mode in which the response is completed within this time. As for the liquid crystal having the above-mentioned spontaneous polarization or the nematic liquid crystal having a high speed, an element which has such a fast response is not known. As a result, the liquid crystal responds after the completion of signal writing, and the following problem occurs. First, in a liquid crystal having spontaneous polarization, an anti-electric field is generated due to the rotation of spontaneous polarization, and the voltage across the liquid crystal layer rapidly decreases. Therefore, the voltage written to both ends of the liquid crystal layer greatly changes. On the other hand, even in a high-speed nematic liquid crystal, the change in capacitance of the liquid crystal layer due to the anisotropy of the dielectric constant becomes extremely large, so that the holding voltage to be written and held in the liquid crystal layer changes. Such a decrease in the holding voltage, that is, a decrease in the effective applied voltage lowers the contrast due to insufficient writing. When the same signal is continuously written, the luminance continues to change until the holding voltage does not decrease, and several frames are required to obtain stable luminance.
[0006]
Furthermore, as shown in Japanese Applied Physics, Vol. 36, Part 1, No. 2, pp. 720-729, the same image signal is changed several frames from the frame in which the image signal changes and the absolute value of the signal voltage changes. A phenomenon called a "step response" is observed when writing is continued over a period of time. This phenomenon is a phenomenon in which the transmittance vibrates brightly and darkly over several frames with respect to the AC drive signal voltage having the same amplitude, and thereafter becomes stable at a constant transmitted light amount. An example of this phenomenon is schematically shown in FIG. 24A is a waveform diagram of the data voltage, FIG. 24B is a waveform diagram of the gate voltage, and FIG. 24C is a waveform diagram of the transmittance at that time. The transmittance stabilizes after step response during AC driving. The transmittance at a stable time is indicated by a two-point silver line, and the transmittance at the darkest is indicated by a one-point silver line.
[0007]
FIG. 25 is a timing chart for each scanning line in the driving of FIG. 24. The shading of the positive display period 102 and the negative display period 104 schematically represents the luminance based on the transmittance of FIG. Is shown in In the figure, the time of 16.7 ms, which is one field time, is indicated by an arrow. In this figure, six scanning lines are assumed. Positive writing 101 is performed sequentially from the upper scanning line to obtain a positive display 102, and then negative writing 103 is sequentially performed again from the upper scanning line. And a negative display 104 is obtained. For each scanning line, the first field is obtained by adding the period of the positive writing 101 and the period of the positive display 102, and the second field is obtained by adding the period of the negative writing 103 and the period of the negative display 104. The sum of both fields is one frame.
When the data voltage shown in FIG. 24A is applied and the TFT switch is turned on by the gate voltage shown in FIG. 24B, the transmittance vibrates brightly and darkly for each field as shown in FIG. Such transmittance vibration is observed as flicker, and causes deterioration of display quality. Further, in this figure, the transmittance is settled to a constant value in the second frame (four fields) after the application of the signal voltage. As a result, the luminance change also oscillates as shown in FIG. As described above, even when the high-speed response liquid crystal is used, several frames are required to stabilize the actual luminance, and the high-speed display image is lost.
[0008]
On the other hand, in active matrix driving, the transmittance after liquid crystal response is determined not by the applied signal voltage but by the amount of charge stored in the liquid crystal capacitance after liquid crystal response. This is because the active drive is a constant charge drive in which the liquid crystal responds with the held charge. The amount of charge supplied from the active element is determined by the accumulated charge before writing a predetermined signal and the newly written charge, ignoring minute leakage and the like. Further, the accumulated charge after the liquid crystal responds also changes depending on painter design values such as physical constants and electrical parameters of the liquid crystal and storage capacitance. For this reason, the correspondence between the signal voltage and the transmittance is obtained by (1) the correspondence between the signal voltage and the write charge, (2) the accumulated charge before the write, and (3) the information for calculating the accumulated charge after the response. And actual calculations are required. As a result, a frame memory for storing (2) over the entire screen and a calculation unit of (1) or (3) are required. This undesirably increases the number of parts of the system.
[0009]
As a method for solving these problems, a reset pulse method of applying a reset voltage for adjusting the liquid crystal state to a predetermined state before writing new data is often used. As an example, the technology described on pages L-66 to L-69 of IDRC 1997 will be described. In this document, an OCB (optically compensated birefrigence) mode in which a nematic liquid crystal is oriented in a pie shape and a compensation film is added is used. The response speed of this liquid crystal mode is about 2 to 5 milliseconds, which is much faster than the conventional TN mode. As a result, the response should have been completed within one frame. However, as described above, a change in the dielectric constant due to the response of the liquid crystal caused a large decrease in the holding voltage, and several frames were taken until a stable transmittance was obtained. It costs. FIG. 26 (FIG. 5 of the above document) shows a method of writing a black display after writing a white display in one frame. The horizontal axis is time, and the vertical axis is luminance. The dotted line indicates a change in luminance in the case of normal driving, and reaches a stable luminance in the third frame. According to the reset pulse method, a new data is always in a predetermined state at the time of writing. Therefore, a one-to-one correspondence of a constant transmittance to a constant signal voltage written is seen. With this one-to-one correspondence, the generation of the driving signal becomes very simple, and at the same time, there is no need for a means such as a frame memory for storing the previous write information.
[0010]
As another method of applying the reset voltage, positive and negative data signal voltages are generated for a fixed image signal, and after applying a positive (negative), a negative (positive) is applied, and then the reset voltage is applied. Is applied. In this case, if the positive and negative data signal voltages having the same amplitude are simply applied, the above-mentioned “step response” occurs. Therefore, application of a data signal voltage as shown in FIGS. 27 and 28 is performed.
[0011]
FIG. 27 is a waveform diagram of the data pressure, and FIG. 28 is a waveform diagram of the transmittance at that time. The waveforms indicated by the dotted lines in the figure are the waveform of the data voltage having the same amplitude and the waveform of the transmittance when the voltage is applied. In these figures, for simplicity, the data voltage is shown by subtracting the common voltage (actually, the common voltage corresponds to the position of 0 volt in the figures). In order to prevent the “step response”, the amplitude of the data voltage at the beginning of the frame (here, the positive data voltage) is set low, and the amplitude of the data voltage at the latter half of the frame (here, the negative data voltage) is set to the waveform indicated by the dotted line. The same shall apply. As a result, the step response is prevented, and as shown in FIG. 28, the same transmittance is obtained in both the first half and the second half of the frame. Thereafter, by resetting at the end of the frame, the liquid crystal state is always set to a predetermined reset state. In the next frame, a similar waveform is newly applied, so that a one-to-one correspondence with a constant signal voltage and a constant transmittance is seen. Also, here, the reset voltage is set to 0 volts with respect to the common voltage, but this depends on the liquid crystal display mode and a predetermined state to be realized by the reset.
[0012]
Further, these reset driving methods are roughly classified into two types depending on the timing of resetting each scanning line in a field. That is, a method of resetting all the scanning lines on the entire surface of the panel at once (hereinafter, collectively resetting the whole surface), and performing the diset while scanning each scanning line or a scanning line block in which a plurality of scanning lines are collected in the same manner as in the scanning writing. Method (hereinafter, scan reset). The whole batch reset can be regarded as a scan reset in which all the scanning lines are in the same block at the time of reset (however, in this concept, the reset scan does not occur, so the scan reset and the whole batch reset are classified into different categories). .
[0013]
29 and 30 show timing charts for each scanning line in each reset method. FIG. 29 is a timing chart for each scanning line in the batch reset, and FIG. 30 is a timing chart for each scanning line in the scanning reset. The horizontal axis represents time, and the vertical axis represents the scanning line direction. Each of a writing period, a response period, a display period, and a reset period is shown. 29 and 30, in the writing period, writing is performed while scanning the scanning lines sequentially (here, from top to bottom). The writing period (abbreviated as Tw if necessary) is represented by multiplying the time tw required for writing each scanning line by the number n of scanning lines, and Tw = n × tw. Thereafter, there is a response period (abbreviated as Tm as necessary) until the response of the liquid crystal becomes almost stable. Next, a period dedicated to display (abbreviated as Td as necessary) until the response of the liquid crystal is stabilized and the reset starts. When the reset starts, a great difference occurs between FIG. 29 and FIG. That is, in the batch reset of FIG. 29, all the scanning lines are reset at the same time. The reset period (abbreviated to Tr as necessary) is the sum of the time required for writing the reset and the time until the liquid crystal almost settles in a predetermined state. On the other hand, in the scanning reset of FIG. 30, the scanning lines are sequentially scanned to reset. As a result, in the scan reset method of FIG. 30, the reset period Tr and the writing period Tw overlap considerably. As described above, the scan reset method has less waste in time distribution.
[0014]
As another means for solving these problems such as the step response, a driving method called "pseudo DC driving" shown on pages 119 to 122 of the digest of AMLC 97 has been proposed. This technique will be described with reference to FIG. FIG. 31 is a waveform diagram of the data voltage, FIG. 31 (b) is a waveform diagram of the gate voltage, and FIG. 31 (c) is a waveform diagram of the transmittance at that time, similarly to FIG. FIG. 32 is a timing chart for each scanning line, and the shading of the positive and negative display periods 102 and 104 represents the luminance based on the transmittance of FIG.
[0015]
In FIG. 32, the time of 16.7 ms is indicated by an arrow. In the description in the literature, 16.7 ms is defined as one frame time. However, since this definition is not general, it is changed in the figures in the present specification. This is equivalent to one field time as compared with the conventional technique in the related art). In the “pseudo DC drive”, unlike the normal AC drive shown in FIG. 24, a data voltage of the same sign is continuously applied during a plurality of fields. After a plurality of fields, the sign of the data voltage is inverted to eliminate electrical bias. In FIG. 31, after the positive writing of four fields, the negative writing of four fields is performed, and the display of one image signal ends. The writing timing for each scanning line is as shown in FIG. 32. Writing positive data sequentially from the top, repeating this four times, and then writing negative data sequentially from the top is repeated four times. In this method, a state is obtained in which the applied constant DC voltage is the same as the holding voltage at both ends of the liquid crystal. As a result, the holding voltage does not decrease due to the response of the liquid crystal, and the final transmittance increases as compared with the method in which the holding voltage decreases due to the response of the liquid crystal as in the AC drive in FIG. However, one frame time in this method is the sum of a plurality of frames of each code. That is, in the example of FIG. 31, one frame time of this method takes four times as long as the frame of FIG.
[0016]
Further, a technique is known in which the light source is blinked on a different day from the field sequential. This means that moving image support is a daily feature. This is classified into an impulse type, in which the luminance is rapidly reduced after the high luminance due to the characteristics of the phosphor, as in a CRT, and a hold type, in which the luminance is maintained within one field period, such as a liquid crystal display. This is performed based on the analysis result of the display characteristics in the case of performing. Such an analysis is shown on pages 1 to 6 of the proceedings of the seminar "Limiting the LCD into the CRT Monitor Market-From the Viewpoint of Moving Image Display" organized by the LCD Forum of the Liquid Crystal Society of Japan. . As a result of the analysis, it is not enough to improve the response speed of the liquid crystal to perform good moving image display with the hold type, and there is a problem caused by the hold type operation method itself that the display light is held. It is pointed out that there is. In order to improve this, two methods of (1) shortening the hold time of the display light and (2) arranging the display light at the screen position along the movement of the image as much as possible can be considered. As a method of shortening the hold time of (1), the backlight was blinked and displayed on an LCD accelerated by using a π-cell structure using a compensator on pages 20 to 23 of the same proceedings. The technology is shown. In addition, a technique is described in which a backlight light source is constantly turned on and a hold state is shortened by inserting a reset state.
[0017]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
The pseudo DC drive requires a longer frame time (four times as long as the AC drive in FIGS. 31 and 32) as compared with the AC drive, and high-speed response is indispensable. Further, as a result, a long-period flicker which oscillates at several times the normal frame time (16.7 ms) as shown in FIG. As a result, there is a problem that it is difficult to display a moving image.
[0018]
Further, in the method of comparing the accumulated charges before and after writing, as described above, a comparison operation unit and the like are required in addition to the frame memory, and there is a problem that the system is increased.
[0019]
Further, in the reset method, during one field period, a writing period, a response period (time until the response is stabilized after writing), a reset period (time until the state is settled down to a certain level by reset writing and reset), and the like. Exists. The period in which the display can be used substantially is one field time excluding these periods. As a result, the reset pulse method has a problem that the time available for display is reduced by the reset period.
[0020]
Further, there is a problem that the scanning period is shortened by the reset period. Normally, the scanning period (writing time) is substantially equal to the field time, which is half the frame time, divided by the number of scanning lines. However, when the reset period is provided during the field time, the scanning period is obtained by subtracting the reset time from the field time and dividing by the number of scanning lines as shown in FIG. As a result, the scanning period is shortened by the reset. A method of combining the interlace driving and the reset so that the reset period does not affect the scanning period is disclosed in, for example, JP-A-4-186217. In this method, an FLC (ferroelectric liquid crystal) panel is driven in an interlace mode, and a scanning line in a non-display period is reset. Thus, a reduction in the scanning period due to the provision of the reset period is slightly prevented. Further, since the reset cycle of adjacent lines is shifted, flickering is considered to be reduced by averaging. However, this method also has a problem that the time available for display is reduced by the reset period.
[0021]
Such a decrease in the display period is particularly serious in the field sequential display, and it is extremely difficult to secure the luminance.
[0022]
Furthermore, the reset may cause uneven brightness in the panel surface. The measures for this point can be slightly improved by the technique described in Japanese Patent Application No. 10-041689.

In the tenth embodiment of the driving method of the liquid crystal display device according to the present invention, a plurality of arbitrarily selected scanning lines are set as one block, the blocks are simultaneously reset, and the blocks are arbitrarily selected and scanned.
[0070]
In the eleventh embodiment of the driving method of the liquid crystal display device of the present invention, the scanning method disclosed in Japanese Patent Publication No. Hei 10-041689 is applied to the tenth embodiment of the driving method. For example, as shown in FIGS. 16 to 18 (FIG. 3 of Japanese Patent Application No. 10-041689), the first scanning line group in which writing is performed in the first field is reset at the end of the second field, and the second scanning line group is reset. The second scanning line group in which writing has been performed in the field from the direction opposite to the direction of the first scanning line group is reset at the end of the first field of the next frame. Thus, by changing the scanning direction, it is possible to alleviate the luminance distribution in the panel surface. Note that the reset voltage and the data voltage are not limited to those shown in FIGS. 17 and 18, and can be arbitrarily selected according to the liquid crystal display mode and the type of driving. Furthermore, other methods described in Japanese Patent Application No. 10-041689 can be applied.
[0071]
According to the twelfth embodiment of the driving method of the liquid crystal display device of the present invention, writing of each scanning line in each gate drive circuit is performed by sequential scanning in the eighth to eleventh embodiments of the driving method.
[0072]
In the thirteenth embodiment of the driving method of the liquid crystal display device according to the present invention, the writing of each gate drive circuit is sequentially started with a certain time shift in the twelfth embodiment of the driving method.
[0073]
The fourteenth embodiment of the driving method of the liquid crystal display device according to the present invention is a technique in which the thirteenth embodiment of the driving method is further modified. Scan. By this method, sequential scanning over the entire panel is possible. FIG. 10 shows a timing chart of the driving in this case. The timing chart is apparently the same as FIG. However, it is greatly different in that the gate drive circuit is divided.
[0074]
In the fifteenth embodiment of the driving method of the liquid crystal display device of the present invention, the writing of each gate drive circuit is started almost simultaneously in the twelfth embodiment of the driving method.
[0075]
According to the sixteenth embodiment of the driving method of the liquid crystal display device of the present invention, writing of each scanning line in each gate driving circuit is performed almost simultaneously with all the scanning lines in the eighth to eleventh embodiments of the driving method. . As a result, the display period can be further increased.
[0076]
In the seventeenth embodiment of the liquid crystal display device driving method according to the present invention, the optical system lights up the entire surface of the liquid crystal display unit at a time.
[0077]
According to the eighteenth embodiment of the driving method of the liquid crystal display device of the present invention, the optical system turns on the block for each gate drive circuit in the liquid crystal display unit at a time, and the other gate drive circuits use different timings. Lights up.
[0078]
In the nineteenth embodiment of the driving method of the liquid crystal display device according to the present invention, the seventeenth or eighteenth embodiment is performed in the first to sixteenth embodiments of the driving method.
[0079]
The twentieth embodiment of the driving method of the liquid crystal display device according to the present invention is, among the nineteenth embodiments of the driving method, particularly the seventeenth and eighteenth embodiments employing the sixth or seventh embodiment. It is an embodiment. The operation of the seventeenth embodiment employing the sixth embodiment among the twentieth embodiments is as follows.
[0080]
Scanning and resetting of writing are performed according to the timing chart of FIG. Therefore, compared to the conventional driving shown in FIG. 29, the time used for writing and response is greatly reduced. As a result, the period usable for display increases. In the case where the light source is turned on all over the display area, a higher brightness display can be obtained in this embodiment, which has a longer period usable for display. Thus, the light use efficiency increases. In addition, since the time during which the liquid crystal can perform stable display with a sufficient response has been increased, stable high-quality display can be performed when color time division or bright / dark blinking is performed. As described above, in the collective lighting of the light sources, the adoption of the sixth embodiment enables extremely efficient use of light. In addition, high-quality display is possible. By adopting the seventh embodiment, it is possible to use light more efficiently, which is suitable for collectively lighting the light sources. On the other hand, when the display period is the same, the writing time to each scanning line can be increased, that is, the frequency of the gate drive circuit can be reduced. With both of these effects, it is possible to reduce the frequency of the gate drive circuit and increase the display period.
[0081]
In the twenty-first embodiment of the liquid crystal display device driving method according to the present invention, the optical system is turned on while scanning the liquid crystal display unit. This can be said to be a scanning optical system.
[0082]
In the twenty-second embodiment of the method of driving a wave crystal display device according to the present invention, the optical system scans and turns on the inside of each block for each gate drive circuit in the liquid crystal display unit, and differs from the other gate drive circuits. Lights at the timing.
[0083]
In the twenty-third embodiment of the driving method of the liquid crystal display device of the present invention, the twenty-first or twenty-second embodiment is performed in the first to sixteenth embodiments of the driving method.
[0084]
In the twenty-fourth embodiment of the driving method of the liquid crystal display device of the present invention, among the twenty-third embodiments of the driving method, particularly, the twenty-first and twenty-second embodiments adopting the fourteenth embodiment. It is. The operation of the twenty-first embodiment employing the fourteenth embodiment of the twenty-fourth embodiment is as follows.
[0085]
Scanning and resetting of writing are performed according to the timing chart of FIG. Therefore, the driving is apparently the same as the conventional driving shown in FIG. However, in each drive circuit, the number of scanning lines to be driven is reduced, and it is possible to drive with a circuit in which a conventional scanning line cannot be driven. As a result, a drive circuit that is inexpensive and has good characteristics can be used. On the other hand, when the light source is sequentially scanned and turned on in the display area in synchronization with the driving of the liquid crystal display unit, very good display is obtained. As described above, according to this embodiment, good display can be obtained even when the light source is of a scanning type.
[0086]
In the twenty-fifth embodiment of the liquid crystal display device according to the present invention, in the first to twenty-fourth embodiments of the driving method, the scanning timing of the scanning line and the rising characteristics of the luminance of the light source are considered as necessary. In addition, scanning lines and light sources are synchronized in consideration of the occurrence of display unevenness in the panel surface. The synchronization is provided with a counter for causing a difference between the clock and the set predetermined clock. As this counter, a binary counter or a Johnson counter may be used, or another type of counter may be used.
[0087]
According to the twenty-sixth embodiment of the liquid crystal display device driving method of the present invention, in the first to twenty-fifth embodiments, light from the incident optical system is prevented from being incident on the driving circuit portions of the data driving circuit and the gate driving circuit. It has become. This non-incident method may be performed by a light-shielding layer or a patterned shutter layer, or by another method.
[0088]
In the twenty-seventh embodiment of the driving method of the liquid crystal display device according to the present invention, light having a shape such that light does not enter the switch section in the display area is emitted from the incident optical system to the liquid crystal display section. The shape may be a stripe shape, a checkered shape, a shape in which dots of dark portions are scattered, or the like, and may be another shape.
[0089]
In the twenty-eighth embodiment of the driving method of the liquid crystal display device of the present invention, in all of the above embodiments, the method of doubling the number of data lines and halving the number of scanning lines is applied. This greatly reduces the load on the gate drive circuit. FIG. 11 shows an example of the image sequence in this case.
[0090]
In the twenty-ninth embodiment of the driving method of the liquid crystal display device according to the present invention, a block selected from a large number of display area blocks formed by each divided gate drive circuit and each data drive circuit is sequentially scanned by an optical system. Liquid crystal display device.
[0091]
FIG. 12 schematically shows an example of the embodiment of FIG. 4 in which the gate drive circuit is divided into two and the data drive circuit is also divided into two. (A) is the moment of irradiating the upper left divided light into four parts, (b) is the moment of irradiating the upper right, (c) is the moment of irradiating the lower left, and (d) is the right. It is the moment of irradiating below. For example, light is scanned in the order of (a)-(b)-(c)-(d). However, it need not be in this order at all. Further, in this figure, each block is illuminated on the entire surface at the time of scanning with light, but it is also possible to scan and irradiate within each block. Further, a plurality of blocks may be irradiated simultaneously.
[0092]
In the above-described embodiment, only a diagram in which the synchronization unit is independent as shown in FIG. 2 is described, but another configuration may be used. For example, the synchronization unit may be provided in a drive circuit of the liquid crystal display unit, or may be provided in a drive circuit of the light source.
[0093]
【Example】
Next, embodiments of the present invention will be described in detail with reference to the drawings.
[0094]
First, a first embodiment of the liquid crystal display device of the present invention will be described with reference to FIG. FIG. 19 is an enlarged view showing a glass substrate having TFTs formed in an array according to the first embodiment of the present invention. In the first embodiment, a liquid crystal display section is formed by a liquid crystal display element having a wide viewing angle by adding a compensator to a π cell called OCB (optically compensated birefrigence) and applying the present invention. This is an example. When the configuration of the compensator is changed, it is also possible to use a complementary π-cell structure (CPS: Complementary pi-cell structure) mode. 480 gate bus lines (scanning electrode lines) and 640 drain bus lines (signal electrode lines) are made of chromium (Cr) formed by sputtering, have a line width of 10 μm, and have a gate insulating film of silicon nitride. (SiNx) was used. The size of one unit pixel was 330 μm in length and 110 μm in width. A TFT (thin film transistor) was formed using amorphous silicon, and a pixel electrode was formed by sputtering using indium tin oxide (ITO) as a transparent electrode. A glass substrate on which TFTs were formed in an array as shown in a partially enlarged view in FIG. 19 was used as a first substrate. After a light-shielding film using chromium was formed on the second substrate facing the first substrate, color filters were formed in a matrix by a dyeing method. At the time of forming this color filter, the color filter of each color was 1.5 μm and three colors were overlapped to obtain a 4.5 μm uneven structure. Further, the thickness was set to 6 μm by laminating using a transparent resin material other than the color filter. Further, the uneven structure was formed at a ratio of one per three signal electrode lines so as to oppose the signal electrode lines in a region other than the pixel opening when facing the TFT substrate. Polyamic acid was applied to the first and second substrates by spin coating, baked at 200 ° C., imidized, and a polyimide film was formed. On this polyimide film, a puff cloth using rayon is wound around a roller having a diameter of 50 mm, and the number of rotations of the roller is 600 rpm, the stage movement speed is 40 mm / sec, the pushing amount is 0.7 mm, and the number of rubbing times is two times, so that a parallel lapping is obtained. Rubbed in different directions. The thickness of the alignment film measured by a contact step meter was about 500 °, and the pretilt angle measured by the crystal rotation method was 7 degrees. An ultraviolet-curing sealing material in which a cylindrical glass rod spacer having a diameter of about 6 μm was dispersed was applied to one of the pair of glass substrates. These substrates were arranged so that the rubbing directions were parallel to each other so that the two substrates faced each other, and the sealing material was cured by non-contact irradiation with ultraviolet light to assemble a panel having a gap of 6 μm. A nematic liquid crystal was injected into this panel. In this embodiment, a compensator designed to obtain the same effect as the OCB (optically compensated birefrigence) display mode shown on pages 927 to 930 of S.I.D. Was added. A driving driver was attached to the liquid crystal panel manufactured in this manner to form a liquid crystal display unit. With this liquid crystal display, high-speed display with a wide viewing angle was obtained.
[0095]
In the driving method according to the first example of the present invention, the seventeenth embodiment employing the sixth embodiment among the 200th embodiment of the driving method is employed. As the incident light source, a backlight that makes light incident on the entire surface used in a normal liquid crystal display was used, and the inverter circuit was modified so that it could blink light and dark. By this method, a display with a higher brightness than the method of the previous 20 pages to 23 pages of the proceedings of the conventional seminar "LCD penetrates the CRT monitor market-from the viewpoint of moving image display ..." was gotten. In addition, when the blinking time of the backlight was adjusted so as not to increase the luminance and to eliminate the luminance unevenness in the panel surface, an extremely high-quality display was obtained. Further, when the compensating plate was changed to a complementary pi-cell structure (CPS) mode, a high-quality display with almost no color unevenness was obtained.
[0096]
Next, a second embodiment of the present invention will be described with reference to FIG. FIG. 20 is a schematic diagram showing the timing of the light source in the second embodiment of the present invention. In the second embodiment of the present invention, the liquid crystal display mode is the same as that of the first embodiment, but a panel is manufactured by dispersing spherical spacers of silica without forming a color filter and a protruding spacer. A color time division optical system was combined with this liquid crystal display. First, as the color time division optical system, a configuration using a rotary color filter for color time division was used as a white light source. The flashing timing of the light source was based on the method shown in FIG. 20 (FIG. 11 of Japanese Patent Application No. 10-041689). Thereby, display by color time division was possible.
[0097]
Next, a third embodiment of the present invention will be described with reference to FIG. FIG. 21 is a schematic diagram showing an optical system used in the third embodiment of the liquid crystal display device of the present invention. In the third embodiment, the color time division optical system of the second embodiment is changed to the following optical system. An example in which the color time-division optical system in this embodiment is manufactured using a two-color polarizing plate having a high transmittance as shown in U.S. Pat. No. 5,751,384 of ColorLink of the United States will be described below. FIG. 21 is a schematic diagram schematically showing the optical system. The light from the white light source (the direction of incidence is indicated by the arrow at the lower left of the figure) is split into two types of linearly polarized light using the polarization separation element 55, and then the other linearly polarized light is used using the polarization rotation element 56 as one of the linearly polarized light. After the same vibration direction as that of the above, synthesis was performed. By this polarization conversion method, white light is adjusted to one linearly polarized light with very little loss. Although the mirror 57 is used here, it is not necessary depending on the contrivance of the optical system. Further, depending on the structure, it is possible to further reduce the thickness of the polarization conversion optical system. Thereafter, a yellow-blue two-color polarizing plate 58, a liquid crystal element A59, a monochromatic polarizing plate 60, a liquid crystal element B61, and a cyan-red two-color polarizing plate 62 are arranged in this order. The yellow-blue two-color polarizer and the cyan-red two-color polarizer were made to have extremely small loss by the structure of ColorLink. However, since a monochromatic polarizing plate required at the time of incidence is eliminated in the configuration of ColorLink and the configuration is performed by the above-described polarization conversion method, light loss is extremely small. In this method, in each of the liquid crystal element A59 and the liquid crystal element B61, black / red / edge / blue light is output by combining the switching of the condition of rotating the polarization by 90 degrees and the condition of not rotating the polarization. It is possible. With this method, color time division in the method shown in FIG. 41 was possible. In this method, the light utilization was higher than in the second embodiment, and good display was possible.
[0098]
Next, a fourth embodiment of the liquid crystal display device of the present invention will be described.
[0099]
The fourth embodiment of the present invention is an example in which the present invention is applied to a smectic liquid crystal. The TFT substrate and the CF substrate were prepared in the same manner as in the first embodiment. However, the film thickness of one of the colors of the color filter was set to 1.6 rm, and an uneven structure was formed using only this layer. In addition, a concavo-convex structure is provided outside the display area so as to surround the display area and to open only a part of the area. The uneven structure outside the display area serves as a wall of the sealing material, and the open area serves as a liquid crystal injection port. Further, the insulating layer in the contact portion was removed by patterning. Thereafter, polyamic acid was applied to both substrates by spin coating, baked at 180 ° C., imidized, and a polyimide film was formed. A puff cloth made of nylon is wound around a roller having a diameter of 50 mm, and the number of rotations of the roller is 600 rpm, the stage movement speed is 40 mm / sec, the pushing amount is 0.7 mm, and the number of rubbing times is two, and 10 ° cross rubbing is performed. Rubbed in the direction. The thickness of the alignment film measured by the contact step meter was about 500 °, and the pretilt angle measured by the crystal rotation method was 1.5 degrees. Such a pair of glass substrates are arranged so that the two substrates face each other so that the rubbing directions are 10 ° cross rubbing with each other, and the polyimide used for the alignment film is further cured by a heat treatment at 220 ° C. to have an adhesive property. A panel having a gap of 1.6 μm was assembled. A liquid crystal composition similar to the V-shaped switching antiferroelectric liquid crystal composition shown on pages 61 to 64 of Asian Display 95 is placed in this panel in an isotropic phase (Iso) at 85 ° C. in vacuum. Injected in the state. The spontaneous polarization value of the liquid crystal was measured by applying a triangular wave, and was 165 nC / cm 2. The response speed varied depending on the gradation voltage, but was between 200 microseconds and 800 microseconds. At 85 ° C., a rectangular wave having a frequency of 3 kHz and an amplitude of ± 10 V is applied to the entire surface of the panel using an arbitrary waveform generator and a high-power amplifier, and a rate of 0.1 ° C./min to room temperature while applying an electric field. And slowly cooled. A driver IC for driving was attached to the liquid crystal panel manufactured in this manner to form a liquid crystal display unit. In the display of the obtained liquid crystal panel, sufficient contrast was ensured (contrast ratio of 200 or more), a wide viewing angle was obtained, and good display was obtained without image sticking or afterimage. The liquid crystal alignment was at the center of 10 ° cross rubbing, that is, at a position shifted by 5 ° from each rubbing direction.
[0100]
In the driving method of the present example, the twenty-first embodiment employing the fourteenth embodiment of the twenty-fourth embodiment of the driving method of the present invention was used. As the incident light source, a color time division optical system based on the ColorLink method of the third embodiment was used. However, in the liquid crystal element A and the liquid crystal element B, the electrodes were patterned and formed so that they could be used in a scanning manner. As the liquid crystal used in the liquid crystal elements A and B, high-speed response was realized by using SSFLC (surface-stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystal) made of ferroelectric liquid crystal. In the present embodiment, high-quality display by the color time division method is realized.
[0101]
Next, a fifth embodiment of the liquid crystal display device of the present invention will be described.
[0102]
Same as the first embodiment, except that a bright and dark blinking light source was used as the light source. In this flickering light source, a liquid crystal element having a shutter effect in which electrodes are patterned is arranged to be a scanning type. As a result, display by a good scanning type light-blinking light source was realized. In this method, it is possible to adjust the degree of improvement due to the shutter effect in displaying moving images, particularly by adjusting the on / off timing of the shutter liquid crystal element.
[0103]
Next, a sixth embodiment of the liquid crystal display device of the present invention will be described with reference to FIGS. FIG. 22 is a sectional view showing a planar type pixel switch according to a sixth embodiment of the liquid crystal display device of the present invention, and FIG. 23 is a view showing the voltage / transmittance characteristics of the liquid crystal material used. In this example, a TFT array of polysilicon (polycrystalline silicon, poly Si) was manufactured, and a smectic liquid crystal material having a small spontaneous polarization value was driven. Specifically, after forming a silicon oxide film on a glass substrate, amorphous silicon was grown. Next, annealing was performed using an excimer laser to convert the amorphous silicon into polysilicon, and a silicon oxide film of 100 ° was further grown. After patterning, the photoresist was patterned slightly larger than the gate shape (to form an LDD region later), and the source and drain regions were formed by doping with phosphorus ions. Further, after growing a silicon oxide film, microcrystalline silicon (μ-c-Si) and tungsten silicide (WSi) were grown and patterned into a gate shape. Further, an LDD region was formed by doping phosphorus ions only in a necessary region with a patterned photoresist. After continuously growing a silicon oxide film and a silicon nitride film, holes for contact were made, and aluminum and titanium were formed by sputtering and patterned. A silicon nitride film was formed, a hole for contact was made, and ITO as a transparent electrode for a pixel electrode was formed and patterned. Thus, a planar type TFT pixel switch as shown in FIG. 22 was formed to form a TFT array. Only a pixel array using a TFT switch was provided on a glass substrate, and a driving circuit was not provided in the substrate, but was externally mounted with single crystal silicon. After patterning the TFT array substrate thus manufactured and ITO serving as a counter electrode over the entire surface, a counter substrate having a light-shielding chromium patterning layer was prepared. 1.8 μm patterned pillars were formed on the counter substrate side to have spacers and impact resistance. Further, a sealing material for ultraviolet curing was applied to the outside of the cut region of the counter substrate. Next, after bonding the TFT substrate and the counter substrate, liquid crystal was injected. As the liquid crystal material, a smectic liquid crystal material having a spontaneous polarization value of about 18 [nC / cm2] and capable of continuous gradation display was used. The voltage / transmittance characteristics of the liquid crystal material used were shaped as shown in FIG.
[0104]
In the driving method of the present example, the twenty-first embodiment employing the fourteenth embodiment among the twenty-fourth embodiments of the driving method of the present invention described above was used. As the incident light source, the light source according to the first embodiment of Japanese Patent Application No. 11-019095 invented by the present inventors was employed. As a result, a light source capable of sequential scanning with little loss of light was obtained. As a result, high image quality was obtained with extremely high light use efficiency.
[0105]
【The invention's effect】
As described above, in the method of driving the liquid crystal display device of the present invention, scanning of each gate drive circuit block starts almost simultaneously when the light source is a collective lighting type. Therefore, there is an effect that the period usable for display can be extended.
[0106]
In addition, the display period becomes longer, and the liquid crystal display and the light source can be linked with each other by devising a driving method, so that a liquid crystal display device with high light use efficiency can be obtained.
[0107]
Further, since the driving circuit is divided and the size of each driving circuit unit is reduced, it is possible to use an inexpensive and simple driving circuit.
[0108]
Further, since the synchronization between the light source and the driving method is optimized, an effect that an extremely high-quality display is obtained can be obtained.
