However, according to the above configuration, when the developing roller rotates, toner enters between the developing roller and the developing side plate, and the toner is rubbed to cause an abnormality such as toner fixation. Was adversely affected.
In the case where the developing roller is constituted by a developing sleeve including a magnet roller, an eddy current is generated when the developing sleeve crosses the magnetic field of the magnet roller, thereby increasing the torque of rotation of the developing roller and causing the developing roller to generate heat. In some cases, the toner may be melted in the developing device. Further, the developing roller requires a driving means to rotate it, and the developing roller must be cylindrical, which has been a great constraint on the layout. Further, in the case where the thinning blade is brought into contact with the rotating developing roller surface, if the mounting accuracy of the thinning blade is not improved, a good toner thin layer is not formed and a good image cannot be obtained. Was. Further, the thinning blade is liable to wear, and it has been necessary to replace the blade at regular intervals. Further, abnormalities such as toner adhesion may occur in the contact portion between the thinning blade and the developing roller, which may adversely affect the image. Therefore, the present invention solves the above-described problems by transporting the developer or toner on the developing roller without rotating the developing roller by using an electrostatic actuator member, and simplifies the configuration of the developing device. It is another object of the present invention to provide an image forming apparatus capable of obtaining a good image.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS The present invention will be described based on embodiments. First,
FIG. 1 illustrates a schematic configuration of an entire image forming apparatus according to an embodiment.
, The overall configuration and operation will be described. A photoconductor drum 1 (for example, an organic photoconductor; OPC), which is a configuration example of a latent image carrier, is driven to rotate clockwise. When a document is placed on the contact glass 2 and a print switch (not shown) is pressed, a scanning optical system 5 including a document illumination light source 3 and a mirror 4 and a scanning optical system 8 including mirrors 6 and 7 move. Scanning of a document is performed. Then, the scanned image is read as an image signal by an image reading element 10 provided behind the lens 9. The read image signal is digitized and processed. Then, the laser diode (LD) is driven by the image-processed signal. The laser light from the LD is reflected by a polygon mirror 13 and then applied to the photosensitive drum 1 via a mirror 14. As a result, the optical writing by the laser beam is performed on the photosensitive drum 1, and an electrostatic latent image is formed on the surface of the photosensitive drum that is already uniformly charged by the charger 15. The electrostatic latent image is visualized by the developing device 16, and the visible image is transferred to the transfer paper sent from the paper supply unit 17 by corona discharge of the transfer charger 18. The transfer paper on which the visible image has been transferred is separated from the surface of the photoreceptor belt 1 by the separation charger 19, and then conveyed by the conveyance belt 21. It is fixed and discharged out of the machine. On the other hand, the toner remaining on the photoreceptor surface after the transfer is removed by the cleaning device 23.

In the toner hopper, two kinds of toners having different charging polarities are mixed and accommodated. As the two types of toners, toners of the same color may be used, or toners of different colors may be used. However, each toner needs to have a predetermined resistance as described later. The toner end detection is performed by detecting the rotation torque of the agitator 163, and assuming that the toner has disappeared in the developing device 16 due to the rotation torque having decreased to a predetermined value or less, and the toner end has been detected. For example, a not-shown toner end indicator on the operation unit is turned on to notify the user of the toner end.

The principle of operation of toner transport by the electrostatic actuator member will be described with reference to FIG. FIG.
As shown in (a), any of the electrode terminals 164a, 164
When no voltage is applied to b and 164c, there is no charge in the drive electrode 164. On the other hand, the toner is triboelectrically charged by the charging roller 162 and has a positive or negative charge. However, since there is no charge on the stator side, the toner is not controlled by the drive electrode 164 and the toner is not conveyed. It is. At this time, the toner is
1 Attached on the stator by floating or around some force. From this state, as shown in FIG.
A positive voltage is applied to the first electrode terminal 164a, and a second electrode terminal 164b
, And 0 V is applied to the third electrode terminal 164c. Then, the toner is attracted to the drive electrode to which a voltage having a polarity opposite to the charging polarity is applied. That is, if the driving electrode is + V, -toner adheres to the developing roller surface on each driving electrode, while if the driving electrode is -V, + toner adheres. At this time, the toner is not attracted to the drive electrode to which no applied voltage is applied. Next, when each applied voltage is switched as shown in FIG. 3C (-V, + V, -V for each of the first to third electrodes), the charge of the toner and the charge of the drive electrode immediately below the same have the same polarity. Therefore, a repulsive force is generated, and a floating force is generated for the toner. The electric charge of the third drive electrode group (changed from 0 to −V) repels the toner on the upper right and attracts the toner on the upper left, so that the movement of the toner generates a rightward driving force. . The friction between the toner and the surface of the developing roller is reduced by the floating force, and the toner moves about one pitch of the drive electrode by the drive force due to the electric charge. Next, in order to shift the voltage (FIGS. 3C and 3D) of the pattern for repelling and driving the toner by one,
Each applied voltage is switched as shown in FIGS. Thereafter, similarly, the toner is continuously moved by applying the driving electrodes one by one while shifting them one by one. Here, Table 1 summarizes the switching of the voltage applied to each drive electrode group from FIG. 3B to FIG. 3F and thereafter. FIG. 3B shows the steps in the table, and FIGS. 3C and 3D show the steps.
However, FIGS. 3E and 3F correspond to the steps. The steps are + V for each of the first to third drive electrode groups,
−V and −V are applied, and the voltage of the pattern for repelling and driving the toner is shifted from the step by one to the right in the toner transport direction. Thereafter, by repeating the steps (1) to (4), the voltage of the pattern for repelling and driving the toner is shifted one by one.

Here, as the toner of this embodiment, any toner of high resistance and medium resistance can be used as long as it can be frictionally charged. However, in the case of a medium-resistance toner, the toner is instantaneously charged by the electric charge of the drive electrode after switching when the polarity of the voltage applied to the drive electrode is switched while the toner adheres to the surface of the developing roller above the drive electrode. When a charge having a polarity opposite to that of the triboelectric charge is guided to the lower portion of the toner, the charge may be attracted by the charge of the drive electrode and a sufficient repulsive force may not be obtained. Therefore, a resistor having such a resistance that a sufficient repulsive force can be obtained when the polarity of the voltage applied to the drive electrode is switched is used.

In the above configuration, the toner in the toner hopper is conveyed to the charging roller 162 by the agitator 163, charged to a predetermined polarity by the charging roller 162, and then conveyed to the surface of the developing roller 161. Developing roller 1
The toner on 61 is transported by an electrostatic actuator,
It reaches a development area which is a part facing the photosensitive drum 1. In this development area, the positively-charged toner and the negatively-charged toner mixed and put in the development device as described above and conveyed to the development area by the electrostatic actuator are applied to the drive electrode 164 in the development area. By applying an appropriate voltage, the electrostatic latent image adheres to the electrostatic latent image on the photosensitive drum 1 and is visualized by a developing electric field formed by the interaction between the electrostatic latent image and the electric field of the drive electrode 164. The toner that has not adhered to the photosensitive drum 1 returns to the developing device again, and
62 removes the toner from the developing roller 161.

First, a latent image for normal development (hereinafter referred to as a P / P latent image) is formed, and when the latent image passes through the development area, for example, + toner (in this case, the uniform charge is + charge) The photosensitive drum 1 is rotated while the toner image is held without being transferred, or the photosensitive drum 1 is rotated after being transferred onto transfer paper or the like, and then the latent image for reversal development (N / P
A latent image is formed, and the latent image is developed with, for example, -toner (in this case, uniformly charged -charged) when passing through the developing area. FIG. 5A shows, for example, a P / P formed by using an OPC as a photoreceptor and performing negative charging with a charging device, and then erasing a charged charge corresponding to a background portion of an image with a laser beam. 4 schematically shows a state in which the electrostatic latent image has entered a developing area facing the surface of the developing roller 161. On the photoconductor shown in FIG.
The + toner carried on the surface of the developing roller 161 is attached to the portion where the charge remains. In this example, a voltage as shown in FIG. 7B is applied to the drive electrode 164 in the development area via the application electrodes 164a, 164b, and 164c in order to promote the toner adhesion. This is a voltage in which the absolute value of the positive polarity voltage portion is larger than the voltage applied to the drive electrode 164 in the transport area as shown in FIG. 7A and 7B show the drive electrode 164.
7 shows only the portion of the waveform of the voltage applied to which the polarity can be switched (the same applies to FIGS. 7C and 8A to 8C). FIG. 5 (b) shows that, after being charged by a charging device, a portion corresponding to a character and a diagram of an image (a portion other than the background portion of the image) is erased by a laser beam to form a charge. The developed N / P electrostatic latent image is

The toner carried on the surface of the developing roller 161 is attached to the portion of the photoreceptor where the charge has been erased as shown in FIG. 5B. In this example, a voltage as shown in FIG. 7C is applied to the drive electrode 164 in the development area via the application electrodes 164a, 164b, and 164c in order to promote the toner adhesion. These are voltages in which the absolute value of the -polarity voltage portion is larger than the voltage applied to the drive electrode 164 in the transport area as shown in FIG.

As described above, the drive electrode 16 in the developing area
The voltage applied to the photosensitive drum 1 is increased by increasing the absolute value of the voltage portion having the same polarity as the toner used for development by comparing the voltage applied to the photosensitive drum 1 with the voltage applied to the drive electrode in the transport area. It can be easily attached to the surface.
For example, when the toner of the N / P electrostatic latent image, which is carried on the surface of the developing roller 161, is adhered to the portion where the charge is erased, as shown schematically in FIG. The toner of each polarity floats by the repulsive force with the electric charge of the drive electrode 164 having the same sign and is carried to the vicinity of the photosensitive member surface,
As the distance from the surface of the photoreceptor decreases, the force F1 attracted to the photoreceptor expressed by the following equation (1) increases, and the force F1 attracts the force F2 to the developing roller side.
Is adhered to the photoreceptor and developed. F1 = q × (ε × ΔV) / d (1) (where, q: charge of toner, ε: dielectric constant of toner, Δ
V: the potential difference between the photosensitive member and the developing roller, d: the distance between the photosensitive member and the toner) At this time, the voltage applied to the drive electrode 164 in the developing area is the toner used for developing the latent image-the same polarity as the toner. By increasing the absolute value of the portion, the repulsion force is increased, whereby the force F1 attracted to the photoconductor side by bringing the toner closer to the photoconductor surface is increased, and the toner is applied to the latent image. It promotes adhesion. As the toners having different polarities, toners of the same color may be used, but toners of different colors may be used, and the toner images formed by the respective toners may be superimposed on the photoconductor or transfer paper. Thus, a two-color image can be obtained.

Next, a P / P latent image and an N / P latent image are simultaneously formed on the photosensitive drum 1 using, for example, two laser writing systems, and the latent image passes through the developing area. For example, when the P / P latent image is formed by + toner (in this case, the portion corresponding to the character and the diagram retains the + charge potential), the N / P latent image is formed by -toner (in this case, the background). The corresponding portion holds -charge potential), and the case where the development is performed at the same time will be described. Here, in order to form such a P / P latent image and an N / P latent image on the photosensitive drum 1 at the same time, a known method is used.
Composite photoconductors used for color development and the like can be used. Then, in this example, in order to promote the adhesion of the predetermined toner to each latent image, the drive electrode 164 in the development area is
A voltage as shown in FIG. 8B or a voltage as shown in FIG. The applied voltage shown in each of FIGS. 8B and 8C is obtained by superimposing an alternating voltage on the applied voltage to the electrode 164 in the driving in the transport area shown in FIG. Is the superposition of the alternating electric field of a relatively short cycle with respect to the switching cycle of the applied voltage during transport,
FIG. 8B shows a superimposition of alternating electric fields having a cycle equivalent to the switching cycle of the applied voltage during transport. As a result, the + toner and the -toner in the developing area float due to the repulsive force with the electric charge of the drive electrode 164 having the same sign, are carried to the vicinity of the photoconductor, and the force attracted to the photoconductor is attracted to the developing roller. The latent image can be overcome to adhere to the photoreceptor to develop the respective latent images, and the force F1 attracted to the photoreceptor side by bringing the respective toners closer to the photoreceptor surface by the superimposed alternating electric field. Is increased, and the adhesion of the toner to the latent image is promoted.
In this example, toners of the same color may be used as toners having different polarities, but toners of different colors may be used, and the toner images formed with the respective toners may be formed on the photosensitive member or By superimposing on a transfer paper, a two-color image can be obtained.

In this embodiment, the plurality of driving electrodes 164 are divided into three electrode groups, and the toner of each polarity is attached to one of the three electrode groups. That is, the toner of each polarity adheres to approximately one-third of the entire peripheral surface of the developing roller 161. Accordingly, when a two-color image is formed by using toners of different colors as toners of each polarity, the moving speed (conveying speed) of the toner on the developing roller 161 is three times or more the linear speed of the photoconductor. It is necessary to. When toners of the same color are used as toners of each polarity, the toner moving speed of the developing roller 161 is set to 1.
It is necessary to make it 5 times or more.

As described above, in the present embodiment, the toner is conveyed without rotating the developing roller 161 by using the principle of the electrostatic actuator, so that there is no rubbing portion as in the case where the developing roller 161 is rotated. Since stress is applied to the toner in the rubbing part, the torque does not increase due to the generation of the eddy current, and the generation of heat is suppressed, so that the toner in the developing device does not melt. Further, the driving electrode 164 in the developing area is connected to the driving electrode 1 in the transport area.
Since a large voltage is applied so that the force for repelling the toner to the vicinity of the surface of the photoconductor becomes larger than the voltage applied to 64, the development can be promoted.

In the above embodiment, the charging roller 1
Reference numeral 62 is disposed below the center of the developing roller 161. This is because, when the charged toner that has passed through the charging roller 162 is stacked on the developing roller 161, the charged toner drops downward due to gravity. The toner is the developing roller 161
Above, the thinner the layer, the better the development, so the laminated toner is dropped by gravity to make it a thin layer. Conversely, when the charging roller 162 is located higher than the center of the developing roller, when the toner passes through the charging roller 162 in a stacked state, the toner is transported to the developing area with the surface of the developing roller being uneven. Alternatively, there is a possibility that toner is accumulated between the charging roller 162 and the developing roller 161.

In the above embodiment, the toner is used by frictionally charging it. However, the toner can be conveyed without frictionally charging the toner. In this case, FIG.
After the electric charge having the polarity opposite to the polarity of the applied voltage of the drive electrode is induced in the lower part of the toner in the state of (1), the voltage to each applied electrode is switched as shown in FIG. A repulsive force is generated to move the toner in the same manner as in the above embodiment. Also in this case, at the moment when the polarity of the voltage applied to the drive electrode is switched, if the charge of the drive electrode after the switch instantaneously induces a charge having a polarity opposite to the triboelectric charge polarity of the toner to the lower portion of the toner, this is generated. Since there is a possibility that a sufficient repulsive force may not be obtained by being attracted by the electric charge of the drive electrode, a resistor having a resistance enough to obtain a sufficient repulsive force when switching the polarity of the voltage applied to the drive electrode is used.

In the above-described embodiment, the developing device contains toners having different polarities. Alternatively, even if the developing device contains one type of toner charged to a predetermined polarity, the electrostatic actuator can be used. Can be used to carry the toner. [Table 2] Note that, for example, in FIG.
If the voltage applied to the first driving electrode group is made positive and the voltage applied to the first driving electrode group is made negative, driving can be performed in the opposite direction.
In this case, the plurality of drive electrodes 164 are divided into three electrode groups, and the toner of each polarity is attached to one of the three electrode groups. Since the toner adheres to approximately one-third of the entire circumferential surface of the roller 161, it is desirable that the moving speed (conveying speed) of the toner on the developing roller 161 be three times or more the linear speed of the photoconductor. . Also, the drive electrode 16 in the developing area
4, a voltage higher than the voltage applied to the drive electrode 164 in the transport area can be applied so as to increase the force for repelling the toner to the vicinity of the surface of the photoconductor, thereby promoting the development.

As described above, according to the present invention, the electrostatic actuator member is used as the developer conveying means of the developing device, whereby the toner is transferred to the electrostatic latent image carrier without rotating the developer carrier. Is supplied, the toner is not fixed in the developing device, and the torque can be reduced. In addition, there is no problem that a voltage is applied via a bearing of a rotating member like a conventional developer carrier, resulting in a defective application of a developing bias voltage. Further, among the plurality of electrodes of the electrostatic actuator member, a voltage higher than that in the transport region is applied to the electrode in the development region, thereby improving the development efficiency and forming a high-density image. Can be obtained. Furthermore, if two types of toners having different polarities are accommodated in the developing device and development is performed, two types of latent images having different polarities of the toner adhered to the toner adhering portion of the latent image on the latent image carrier are obtained. Since the development can be performed by one developing device, the space occupied by the developing device in the apparatus main body can be reduced. Furthermore, if toners having different colors are used as the toners having different polarities, it is possible to form a two-color image by one development.
