In this conventional image forming apparatus, the amount of toner is constantly monitored by a toner sensor 445 installed in a developing section 444. When the toner sensor 445 detects a small amount of toner, a toner signal to a control circuit 410 is supplied. 44
6 is valid. Toner sensor 445
Examples of such devices include a magnetic element that detects the magnetic inductance of the toner, a piezoelectric element that detects the weight of the toner, and a photoelectric element that detects that the toner blocks the optical path. When the low toner level is detected in this manner, the control circuit 410 sends the motor drive signal 40 to the replenisher drive unit 423.
6 is activated, and the toner in the toner container 447 is transferred to the developing unit 444 by operating the replenisher 431. As the structure of the replenisher 431, a cylindrical body that rotates around the central axis is attached to a slit provided in the partition wall, and the rotational force of the motor in the replenisher driver 423 is transmitted by mechanical transmission means 427 such as gears. Is to be given. After the supply unit 431 operates and the amount of toner in the developing unit 444 increases and the toner sensor 445 detects the presence of toner, the supply unit 431 stops when a predetermined period of time elapses.

As described above, maintaining the amount of toner in the developing section 444 at a constant level not only obtains a constant image density but also suppresses the amount of charge of the toner caused by friction with the developing sleeve 450 to improve the image quality. This is performed for the purpose of performing the development and preventing the toner density from increasing and blocking (solidification) from occurring.

However, in this image forming apparatus, the amount of toner in the developing section 444 is generally detected by the toner sensor 445. However, the output result of the toner sensor 445 is poor in reliability and various Was causing problems. In the case of a one-component developer, a device such as a piezoelectric element or a photoelectric element is used.
It has been difficult to detect a small amount of toner accurately. Further, in the case of a two-component developer, a method is employed in which the carrier remains even when the toner is consumed, so that the mixing ratio of the toner and the carrier is detected by a magnetic sensor. Accurate operation could not be expected.
Therefore, it is known that toner is supplied in accordance with the amount of "1" (black) data in an image signal without using the toner sensor 445.

Reference numeral 555 denotes an image signal sent from an external device (not shown), which is a signal for performing control for irradiating the photosensitive member 551 with the semiconductor laser 537. The oscillator 556 generates a dot clock signal, which is input to the AND gate 557 together with the image signal 555.
The output of the AND gate 557 is connected to the sample hold circuit 5
59, the voltage of the sample hold output increases as the number of “1” s of the image signal 555 increases. The sample hold output is input to a comparator 561, is compared with a reference voltage from a reference voltage generator 560, and when the reference hold voltage is reached, toner supply is performed.

In the above-described conventional image forming apparatus, it is sufficient that the effective signal in the image signal is uniformly distributed in position during the scanning of one line.
When the toner is partially concentrated, that is, when the toner consumption is not uniform along the depth direction in the developing unit, the toner replenishment amount is not only uniform along the depth direction but is truly necessary. There is a problem that the image density is reduced only in a part because the toner supply amount is insufficient in the part.

In the conventional image forming apparatus, the maximum A3
Even when B5 paper, A4 paper, etc. are used continuously in an image forming apparatus capable of outputting on paper, the toner consumption is not uniform along the depth direction of the developing unit. However, there is a problem that a trouble such as a difference in right and left density occurs in the output result.

The control circuit 110 supplies the image signal 112 and the dot clock signal 113 to the counter circuits 102 to 105 as in the prior art shown in FIG.
Since 02 to 105 operate only during the period in which the region selection signals 119 to 122 are valid, the number of “1” (black) in the image signal 112 can be counted for each of the four regions. Subsequent operations are the same as in the prior art. However, when the number of "1" (black) in the image signal reaches a certain value for each of the four regions, the replenisher corresponding to each region operates independently. Is different.

When the area where toner is to be supplied is specified by the motor drive signals 306 to 309 as in the first embodiment, the transport controller 338 determines the current position of the toner discharger 340 and the destination. L / which determines the moving direction by comparison
After the logic of the R signal 341 is determined, the enable signal 342 is output to the transporter 339 only during the transport drive time calculated from the comparison between the current position and the destination.
The transporter 339 drives an internal motor (not shown) for a specified period in a specified direction, and moves the toner discharging unit 340 to a desired destination. When the toner discharge unit 340 reaches a desired destination, the transport control unit 33
8, the toner discharge signal 343 is made valid, an electromagnetic solenoid (not shown) in the transporter 339 is operated, an on-off valve (not shown) in the toner discharge means 340 is opened, and the toner container 3 is opened.
47 is discharged from the toner discharge port of the toner discharge unit 340 to the developing unit 244. When a certain amount of toner is discharged, the toner discharge signal 343 from the carrier control unit 338 becomes invalid, and thereafter the opening and closing valve is closed and the discharge of toner is stopped through the same operation.

In the above description, a laser beam printer has been described as an example. However, a digital copying machine having an image reading device and a scanning optical system can provide the same effect if completely the same means are provided. In the above description, a monochrome image forming apparatus using one type of toner has been described as an example. However, the present invention can be applied to a color image forming apparatus. In this case, for each color-separated image signal input from the outside,
Scanning lines may be divided for each area to count valid signals, and the same toner supply control may be performed for a plurality of developing devices arranged for each color around the photosensitive drum. Further, it goes without saying that the present invention can be applied to various image forming apparatuses as needed.
