The handrail device disclosed herein comprises a base, a support post erected on the base, a handrail section provided at one end of the support post, and a flip-up mechanism that rotates the handrail section to a predetermined position, allowing it to be flipped up. The flip-up mechanism has a receiving member located at one end of the support post on the handrail section side, and a lever member that is rotatably supported on the handrail section via a first pivot shaft and extends forward. The rotation of the handrail section is restricted by engagement between a claw portion provided on the lever member and the receiving member, and the receiving member is formed within the size range of the support post.
The flip-up mechanism disclosed herein allows an armrest attached to one end of a support pillar to be rotated and flipped up to a predetermined position. It comprises a receiving member attached to one end of the support pillar, and a lever member that is rotatably supported on the armrest via a first rotation shaft and extends forward. The rotation of the armrest is restricted by engagement between a claw portion attached to the lever member and the receiving member, and the receiving member is formed to fit within the size of the support pillar.
This disclosure makes it possible to provide a handrail device that is highly convenient for users.
One embodiment of the present invention will be described below with reference to the drawings. Specifically, the handrail device and flip-up mechanism of the present invention will be described as being applied to a handrail device for use in a Western-style toilet, but the scope of application of the present invention is not limited to this embodiment.
[1. Overall structure]
1 is a perspective view showing the entire handrail device 1. The handrail device 1 is a device used, for example, in a toilet. For example, the handrail device 1 is attached to a Western-style toilet. The handrail device 1 can assist a user in sitting, standing, maintaining posture, etc. in a Western-style toilet.
As an example, the handrail device 1 has extendable posts 5 on the left and right sides of the base. The lower end of the post 5 is attached to the base 7, and a rotatable armrest 10 is attached to the upper end as a handrail section. In Figure 1, the post 5 is shown as an elliptical cylinder with a hollow pipe shape, but it may have other shapes (rectangular, cylindrical, etc.). The post 5 may be made of metal, but it may also be made of other materials such as wood or plastic (reinforced plastic, fiber-reinforced plastic, etc.). Although the post 5 is shown as extendable in Figure 1 as an example, it may also be non-extendable (with a fixed height).
In the handrail device 1, it is preferable that the support posts 5 and armrests 10 are provided in a pair on the left and right. However, if one surface of the handrail device 1 is a wall surface, only one on the left or right may be provided. Here, in the drawing in Figure 1, the left and right directions are indicated by arrows indicating the right (R) direction and the left (L) direction. Similarly, the front and back directions are indicated by arrows indicating the forward (F) direction and the rear (B) direction. Furthermore, the direction perpendicular to the left and right directions and the front and back directions is referred to as the up and down direction, and is indicated by arrows indicating the up (U) direction and the down (D) direction.
The support column 5 is configured so that its height can be adjusted up and down by moving the first support column 52 and the second support column 54 while they are interlocked. The heights of the first support column 52 and the second support column 54 can be fixed by a fixing means 56. The fixing means 56 in Figure 1 fixes the positions of the first support column 52 and the second support column 54, for example, by fitting a screw member into holes provided in the first support column 52 and the second support column 54. The fixing means 56 may also fix the first support column 52 and the second support column 54 by other means, such as using a latch structure to fix the positions of the two components.
The second support pillar 54 may be removably fixed to the base 7. For example, the second support pillar 54 may be fixed to the base 7 by being screwed. Alternatively, the second support pillar 54 may secure the two components by engaging a claw portion with the base 7. Alternatively, the second support pillar 54 and the base 7 may be fixed by welding, making them non-removable.
The base 7 is a platform to which the left and right support columns 5 are fixed, and is, for example, U-shaped in plan view. The base 7 also has a space in the center of the rear side in the left-right direction. For example, by positioning the handrail device 1 so that a Western-style toilet bowl is located in the space of the base 7, users can use the handrail device 1 when using the toilet.
In the following embodiment, the first support pillar 52 and the second support pillar 54 will be collectively referred to as the support pillar 5.
[2. Flip-up mechanism]
2 is a diagram illustrating the flip-up mechanism 20. A typical flip-up mechanism requires a cover member such as a metal fitting to hide the mechanism and prevent the user's fingers from getting caught and from touching the latch of the locking mechanism. However, the cover member is large, giving the handrail device the impression of being a care product that is different from ordinary furniture, and thus creating an impression that it is not suited to a home environment, which has been an obstacle to its use by users.
The flip-up mechanism described below allows for the miniaturization of the flip-up mechanism and cover member, resulting in a handrail device 1 that ensures safety while giving the impression of being a care product and not being unsuitable for a home environment.
Figure 2(a) is a left side view showing the armrest 10, flip-up mechanism 20, and support pillar 5. Figure 2(b) is a view of the flip-up mechanism 20 from the rear. Figure 2(c) is an enlarged view of the flip-up mechanism 20, with the cover member shown transparent for illustrative purposes.
The armrest 10 is connected to the support pillar via a lift-up mechanism 20 so that the front end is longer than the rear end. For example, the distance L1 from the tip of the armrest 10 to the center of the support pillar can be determined taking into account the following factors:
First, if we consider the armrest 10 solely for its role as a handrail, the longer the overall length of the armrest 10 and the longer the distance L1, the better. However, when the handrail device 1 is installed in a toilet, it may interfere with entering and exiting through the toilet door (side door), or the load on the structural parts may increase when the user uses the handrail device 1. Therefore, the overall length of the armrest 10 and the distance L1 must be kept within a certain range.
Secondly, the length L1 of the armrest 10 must be long enough for the user to grip it with their hands when using it. This length is preferably long enough for the user to hold it with both hands.
Thirdly, it is preferable to position the support post 5 of the handrail device 1 as far back as possible. Positioning the support post 5 at the rear makes it possible to ensure sufficient space under the user's feet when using the handrail device 1. From the perspective of ensuring sufficient space under the feet, it is desirable to position the support post 5 as far back as possible, but if the support post 5 is positioned too far back, then when the user uses the armrest 10, a large load will be placed on the structural components of the handrail device 1.
It is preferable to determine distance L1 taking these factors into consideration. While the ratio to the overall size of the handrail device 1 is also important, it is generally preferable for distance L1 to be approximately 160 mm to 200 mm (or the surrounding length), and in this embodiment it is set to 180 mm as an example.
The armrest 10 may also be molded with a surface covering member made of resin, polyurethane, or the like, and has a frame 12 inside. In this embodiment, the frame 12 is made of metal as an example, but it may also be made of wood, plastic (reinforced plastic), carbon material, or the like.
The armrest 10 is fixed to a cover member 22, which is one of the connecting members. The cover member 22 may be fixed to the frame 12 of the armrest 10 by welding, or may be fixed with one or more screws, etc. The cover member 22 is also rotatable via a second rotation shaft 62. For example, the cover member 22 is shaped as a pair spanning both sides of the support pillar 5 (first support pillar 52). The cover member 22 may be rotatably supported on the support pillar 5 via a pair of shaft members inserted across both sides of the cover member 22. The left and right cover members 22 may be separate members, or may be formed as a single unit.
When the cover member 22 rotates, the armrest 10, which is fixed to the cover member 22, also rotates in conjunction with it.
One end of the lever member 24 is designed to be grippable by the user, and the other end is rotatably supported on the frame 12 via the first pivot shaft 14. That is, the lever member 24 extends forward and is shaped to be easy for the user to grip. The lever member 24 may also extend downward. In this case, as shown in Figure 2, the lever member 24 extends forward and downward.
The lever member 24 also has a claw portion 242. The claw portion 242 is a member that can engage with a receiving metal fitting 60, which is a receiving member provided at the tip of the support post 5 (first support post 52).
The lever member 24 is biased by a spring member, such as a torsion spring, around the first pivot shaft 14 so that the claw portion 242 of the lever member 24 abuts the receiving metal fitting 60. In other words, the lever member 24 is biased by the spring member while rotating around the first pivot shaft 14 downward on the handrail device 1, and when the claw portion 242 engages with the receiving metal fitting 60, the movement of the armrest 10 is restricted, and the movement of the armrest 10 is locked.
At this point, when the user operates the lever member 24, the lever is released and the engagement between the claw portion 242 and the metal receiving member 60 is released against the biasing force of the spring member. This releases the restriction on the movement of the armrest 10, allowing it to move freely and rotate.
When the user releases the lever member 24 (no longer grips it), the biasing force of the spring member causes the lever member 24 to return to the initial position shown in Figure 2(c). For example, the side wall 244 of the lever member 24 abuts against a wall portion of the frame 12 of the armrest 10, thereby fixing the lever member 24 in the initial position. The initial position of the lever member 24 can be achieved by any one of the side walls of the lever member 24 abutting against a wall portion of the frame 12 of the armrest 10.
When the user returns the armrest 10 from its folded-up position, they push it downward. As the armrest 10 rotates downward, the gently sloping surface on the underside of the claw 242 comes into contact with the metal receiving bracket 60, and as the armrest 10 slides in this state, the lever member 24 moves in a direction against the biasing force of the spring member. Then, as the claw 242 re-engages with the metal receiving bracket 60, the movement of the armrest 10 is restricted again, and the armrest 10 enters a locked state.
In this embodiment, the first pivot shaft 14 is provided inside the armrest 10 (frame 12). By providing the first pivot shaft 14 inside the armrest 10, the amount by which the claw portion 242 of the lever member 24 protrudes from the armrest 10 can be reduced, making it possible to reduce the size of the cover member 22.
It is also preferable that the first pivot shaft 14 is located rearward (B) from the position where the claw portion 242 abuts. This prevents the lever from coming loose when the armrest 10 is raised. In other words, when the armrest 10 is flipped up, a force is applied to the lever member 24 in the direction of the first pivot shaft 14 from the position where the claw portion 242 abuts. If the direction of force is broken down into the up-down (UD) direction and the front-to-back (FB) direction, a force is applied in the rearward direction in the front-to-back direction. Therefore, even if the armrest 10 is flipped up, the lever member 24 will try to move toward the support pillar 5 and will not come loose.
When the user lifts the lever member 24 (moves it upward), the engagement between the claw portion 242 and the receiving metal fitting 60 is released, and the armrest 10 rotates around the second rotation shaft 62.
The receiving bracket 60 is fixed to the upper end of the support 5 (first support 52). For example, the receiving bracket 60 may be fixed to the support 5 by welding. Furthermore, the receiving bracket 60 is preferably positioned inside the support 5. That is, the size (length) of the receiving bracket 60, L3 in Figure 2(b), is shorter than the inner diameter of the support 5. If the receiving bracket 60 were larger than the support 5, the size of the cover member 22 would increase depending on the amount that the receiving bracket 60 protrudes. By positioning the receiving bracket 60 inside the support 5, the size of the cover member 22 can be reduced.
Furthermore, it is preferable that the width of the receiving bracket 60 (e.g., L5 in Figure 2(c)) is smaller than the width of the support 5. In particular, it is preferable that the receiving bracket 60 is positioned inside the support 5; for example, in Figure 2(c), it is preferable that the front side of the receiving bracket 60 is flush with the support 5 in a side view, or that the front side of the receiving bracket 60 is positioned inside (towards the rear) the support 5. If the front side of the receiving bracket 60 is positioned outside the support 5 (e.g., in a position outside the front (F) side of the support 5), the size of the cover member 22 will be large. Furthermore, by positioning the receiving bracket 60 inside the support 5, it is possible to reduce the size of the cover member 22, thereby reducing the overall size of the lift-up mechanism 20.
Figure 3 is an enlarged view illustrating the state in which the armrest 10 is returned from a flipped-up state to a horizontal state. Here, the metal receiving bracket 60, combined with the arc-shaped cover member 22, is gradually hidden. For example, as the armrest 10 approaches horizontal, from W10 in Figure 3(a), W12 in Figure 3(b), and W14 in Figure 3(c), the metal receiving bracket 60 becomes hidden by the cover member 22. This makes it possible to prevent the user's fingers from getting pinched.
In addition, because the cover member 22 in this embodiment has an arcuate shape, even if the user's fingers hit the cover member 22, the movement of lowering the armrest 10 pushes the fingers forward, preventing the fingers from becoming pinched in the gap between the cover member 22 and the receiving metal fitting 60.
It is also preferable to prevent the armrest 10 from colliding with the support post 5 when it is flipped up. For example, it is preferable to provide a gap between the support post 5 and the armrest 10. For example, in Figure 2(c), a gap of approximately 13 mm is provided between the support post 5 and the armrest 10, but it is preferable to provide a gap of approximately 5 mm to 20 mm, and more preferably 10 mm to 20 mm. If the gap is larger, the size of the cover member 22 will increase, but it will be possible for the armrest 10 to flip up at an angle (90 degrees or more) greater than the vertical (90 degrees). This will prevent the flipped-up armrest 10 from falling over, even if it collides with the support post 5, for example.
In this way, in this embodiment, the presence of the cover member 22 makes it possible to prevent fingers from getting pinched in the gap between the frame 12 and the metal receiving bracket 60. Furthermore, the arc-shaped cover member 22 also makes it possible to prevent fingers from getting pinched in the gap between the cover member 22 and the metal receiving bracket 60.
In addition, it is preferable that the receiving end of the armrest 10 be located behind the first pivot shaft 14 to prevent the armrest 10 from tipping backward.
It is also preferable to offset the pivot axis of the receiving bracket from the center of the support post 5. For example, in this embodiment, the pivot axis of the receiving bracket is offset approximately 6 mm rearward in Figures 2(a) and (c), but it is preferable that it be offset approximately 5 to 8 mm rearward.
[3. Armrest]
The armrests of typical handrail devices tend to have simple shapes because they are simply used as a handrail by the user. Often, no consideration is given to the user's ease of use of the armrest. Below, we will explain armrests with a user-friendly shape.
Note that a shape that is easy for users to use refers to a shape that is easy for users to use when the handrail device 1 is installed on a toilet (Western-style toilet) seat, for example. Specifically, it refers to a shape that makes it easy for users to grasp or hold the handrail device 1 when sitting on the toilet seat. It also refers to a shape that makes it easy for users to grasp or hold the handrail device 1 after sitting. By providing the handrail device 1 with an armrest of this shape, users can stabilize their posture and support their body when using the handrail device 1, when sitting down, after sitting down, when standing up, etc. A shape that is easy for users to use may also be a shape that makes it easy for users to move their hands when sitting down, for example to grab toilet paper.
The shape of the armrest in this embodiment will be described with reference to Figures 4 and 5. Figure 4(a) shows a plan view of the armrest 10. Figure 4(b) shows a cross-sectional view of the armrest 10 in Figure 4(a) taken along line XX. Figure 5 is a diagram illustrating the shape of the armrest portion.
The armrest 10 is wide at the front (where the user's wrist is when they place their hand) and narrows towards the rear (where the user's elbow is when they place their hand). In other words, when viewed from above, the armrest 10 has a shape that goes from wide to narrow from the front to the rear.
For example, the armrest 10 of this embodiment has a front width of 150 mm and a rear width of 100 mm. The armrest 10 is not limited to this size, and the front width is preferably approximately 120 mm to 180 mm. In this case, the rear width of the armrest 10 corresponds to the front width and is preferably between 70 mm and 130 mm.
As such, since the user places their wrists on the front side of the armrest, the width of the armrest on the wrist side (the front side of the handrail device 1) is made wider to ensure a sufficient range of motion for the wrist.
In this embodiment, the total length of the armrest 10 is, for example, 335 mm, but this can be determined based on the average distance from the elbow to the grip axis of an adult male (males aged 65 to 74). The total length of the armrest 10 should take into account the average length of the user's forearm or forearm and hand, so it is preferable that the total length be within a width of, for example, approximately 250 mm to 350 mm. In this embodiment, the front end portion is curved with a radius of 75 mm, for example. In this embodiment, the rear end portion is curved with a radius of 50 mm, for example. The curved shape of the armrest 10 corresponds to the width of the armrest 10; for example, if the front width is 120 mm, the curved shape will be radius of 60 mm, and if the front width is 180 mm, the curved shape will be radius of 90 mm.
The shape of the armrest 10 will now be described with reference to Figure 5. From the front (F) side to the rear (B) side, the armrest 10 is divided into three regions: a first region R12, a second region R14, and a third region R16. As an example, Figure 5 shows that when the total length of the armrest 10 is 335 mm, the length L12 of the first region R12 is 60 mm, the length L14 of the second region R14 is 225 mm, and the length L16 of the third region R16 is 50 mm. The thickness of the armrest 10 is 30 mm. Note that these lengths are merely examples, and the ratio of the overall length of the armrest 10 to the lengths of each region may differ. For example, the first region R12 and the third region R16 may each be approximately 15-20% or less of the total length of the armrest 10, while the second region R14 may be 70-80% or more of the total length. Also, although the first region R12 and the third region R16 are shown in Figure 5 with R12 being slightly longer, they may be the same length.
The first region R12 only needs to be large enough to accommodate the user's hand. The third region R16 only needs to be large enough to accommodate the user's elbow. The second region R14 is an area other than the first region R12 and the third region R16, and only needs to be large enough to accommodate the user's forearm (from elbow to wrist), for example.
In the first region R12, the surface 104, which is the upper side of the armrest 10, is preferably flat. The back surface 102, which is the lower side of the armrest 10, has a recessed recess 105. The recess 105 is circular with a radius of approximately 25 mm and is recessed by approximately 3 mm. As a result, the armrest 10 of this embodiment has a thickness of 23 mm at the deepest part of the recess 105, but it is preferable that the thickness be approximately 20 mm to 25 mm.
The flat shape of the surface 104, combined with the thickness of the armrest 10 and the angle of the inclined surface, makes it easier for the user to perform push-ups when standing up or supporting their body while sitting, and makes it easier to grip the armrest 10. Furthermore, because the surface 104 is flat, the position where the user's palm rests is flat on the armrest 10, making it easier to apply vertical force and improving usability.
In addition, by providing a recess 105 on the back surface 102, the user can firmly grip the armrest 10. Furthermore, by providing the recess 105, the user can easily grip the armrest 10, especially when the user leans forward while standing up.
In the second region R14, the surface 108, which is the upper side of the armrest 10, preferably has a recess in the center. For example, the surface 108 has a recess 111. The recess 111 is curved with a radius of 85 mm from the end 110, end 112 toward the center, and is recessed at its deepest point by approximately 5 mm from the rest of the surface. In other words, in the second region R14, the center of the surface is recessed compared to the end portions.
In this way, when a user places their arm on the armrest 10, the end portions 110 and 112 support the arm, allowing the user to rest their arm stably. Furthermore, the end portions 110 and 112 are easily recognizable to the user, making the shape safety-conscious. Furthermore, the gently sloping shape, such as a curve toward the center, improves wiping ease. The back surface 106 of the second region R14 may also have a normal flat shape.
In the third region R16, the surface 122 has a flat shape. Typically, a user will place their elbow in the third region R16 and their arm (forearm) or arm and hand over the first region R12. Therefore, the third region R16 has a flat shape because it is where the elbow is placed. The back surface of the third region R16 may also have a flat shape. Furthermore, by making the third region R16 a flat shape, the user can perform smooth movements, for example, when grabbing toilet paper, as their elbow may be used as a fulcrum.
Furthermore, the inclination angle θ1 of the inclined surface 103 at the end of the first region R12 is approximately 25 degrees. This is because when the handrail device 1 is installed on a toilet (western-style toilet seat), the user's wrist (hand) will be at the front (F) side when they sit on the toilet (western-style toilet seat), and so the user will frequently grip the armrest 10. Therefore, the inclination angle of the inclined surface (side surface) on the front side of the armrest 10 is made larger (e.g., 25 degrees) than the other inclined surfaces to make it easier for users to grip. Furthermore, the inclination angle of the inclined surface on the front side of the armrest 10 is made larger than the other inclined surfaces to provide an angle that is easy for users to catch their fingers on when they pull their arms up to stand up.
Furthermore, the inclination angle θ3 of an inclined surface other than the first region R12, for example, the inclined surface 124 of the third region R16, may be 15 degrees. Furthermore, the inclination angle of an inclined surface other than the inclined surface 103, for example, the inclined surface 107 that forms the side surface of the armrest 10, may also be 15 degrees. In other words, except for the inclined surface at the front of the armrest 10, only vertical forces are expected, even when the user stands or sits down. Therefore, since there is less need for the user's fingers to grip, the inclination angles of the inclined surfaces other than the front are smaller than those of the inclined surface at the front. Furthermore, by providing an inclination around the entire circumference of the armrest 10, the user can grip the armrest 10 in any direction.
Note that the armrest 10 has a recess in the center of the surface 108 in the second region R14, so there is no distinction between left and right sides of the armrest 10. Therefore, the above-described configuration can be manufactured using the same parts for both the left and right sides.
Here, the left and right components of the armrest 10 may be different. For example, as shown in Figure 6, in the second region R14, the surface 108 may be shaped to have a gentle slope from one side (e.g., the outside as seen from the user) to the inside. In this case, the end on the end 110 side may be raised by about 5 mm and continuously recessed toward the center.
While the armrest 10 is preferably in the state shown in Figure 5, it may have only a partial configuration. For example, an armrest with the same width at the front and rear may have only the shape of the first region R12, or only the shape of the second region R14. The armrest 10 may also have only a portion of the inclined surface 103, inclined surface 124, and inclined surface 107. In other words, the above-mentioned features of the shape of the first region R12 (inclined surface 103, back surface 102 (recess 105), front surface 104), the shape of the second region R14 (back surface 106, inclined surface 107, front surface 108 (recess 111), inclined surface 107), and the shape of the third region R16 (back surface 120, front surface 122, inclined surface 124) can be combined one or more times as needed.
