例えば、米国特許第7,170,670号では、電気泳動ディスプレイに使用する懸濁化流体へのある特定のポリマー、例えば、ポリイソブチレンの添加は、ポリマーの添加によって流体の粘度が上昇することが原因となり得るものを超えて、画像安定性、すなわち双安定性の向上をもたらすことが見出されている。したがって、これらのポリマーを懸濁化流体に使用することにより、ディスプレイのスイッチング時間を過度に増加させることなく、画像安定性を実質的に上昇させることができる。しかし、着色電気泳動媒体に使用した場合、これらのポリマーの導入により、色状態の劣化をもたらすことが見出されている。
非極性流体、複数の少なくとも第1のセットの荷電着色粒子、ポリイソブチレン、ならびにビニル芳香族化合物(vinyl aromatic)と、2〜5個の炭素および少なくとも1つの二重結合を有する、少なくとも1種の置換または未置換炭化水素とのコポリマーから選択される添加剤を含む電気泳動媒体を提供することは、本発明の態様である。コポリマーおよびコポリマーとポリイソブチレンの比は、双安定性能を維持しつつ、ディスプレイの色状態の性能を改善するように選択される。
様々なタイプの電気泳動媒体の性能は、本明細書に記載する添加剤の組合せを含むことにより改善できる。例えば、本発明によるポリイソブチレンとコポリマーの組合せは、コポリマーを欠く電気泳動媒体の色性能と比較すると、電気泳動媒体の双安定性を改善し、色状態の性能を維持または改善できる。
Claims (20)
- (a)非極性流体、
(b)複数の第1の荷電粒子、
(c)ポリイソブチレン、ならびに
(c)ビニル芳香族化合物と、2〜5個の炭素および少なくとも1つの二重結合を有する、少なくとも1種の置換または未置換炭化水素とのコポリマーから選択される添加剤
を含む電気泳動媒体。 - 前記ビニル芳香族化合物が、スチレン、アルファ−メチルスチレン、2−メチルスチレン、3−メチルスチレン、4−メチルスチレン、44−ブチルスチレン、4−シクロヘキシルスチレン、4−ドデシルスチレン、2,4−ジイソプロピルスチレン、2,4,6−トリメチルスチレン、2−エチル−4−ベンジルスチレン、4−(フェニルブチル)スチレン、1−ビニルナフタレン、2−ビニルナフタレン、ビニルアントラセン、4−メトキシスチレン、モノクロロスチレン、ジクロロスチレン、ジビニルベンゼン、インデン、メチルインデン、およびそれらの組合せからなる群から選択される、請求項1に記載の電気泳動媒体。
- 前記ビニル芳香族化合物がスチレンを含む、請求項1に記載の電気泳動媒体。
- 前記少なくとも1種の置換または未置換炭化水素が、エチレン、プロピレン、イソプレン、ブチレン、ブタジエン、およびそれらの組合せからなる群から選択される、請求項1に記載の電気泳動媒体。
- 前記添加剤が、スチレン、エチレン、およびプロピレンのコポリマーである、請求項1に記載の電気泳動媒体。
- 前記コポリマー中のスチレンの重量パーセントが20%〜40%である、請求項1に記載の電気泳動媒体。
- 分散体中のポリイソブチレンと添加剤の重量比が1:5〜5:1である、請求項1に記載の電気泳動媒体。
- 前記第1の荷電粒子が赤色、緑色、青色、シアン色、黄色、またはマゼンタ色である、請求項1に記載の電気泳動媒体。
- 前記非極性流体中に分散した複数の第2の荷電粒子をさらに含む、請求項8に記載の電気泳動媒体。
- 前記第2の荷電粒子が白色または黒色である、請求項9に記載の電気泳動媒体。
- 前記第2の荷電粒子が白色であり、前記第1および第2の荷電粒子が反対の荷電極性を有する、請求項10に記載の電気泳動媒体。
- 前記第2の荷電粒子がチタニアを含む、請求項11に記載の電気泳動媒体。
- 前記非極性流体中に分散した複数の第3の荷電粒子をさらに含む、請求項11に記載の電気泳動媒体。
- 前記第3の荷電粒子が黒色であり、前記第1および第3の荷電粒子が同一の荷電極性を有する、請求項13に記載の電気泳動媒体。
- 前記第3の荷電粒子がカーボンブラックまたは亜クロム酸銅を含む、請求項14に記載の電気泳動媒体。
- イオン性界面活性剤をさらに含む、請求項1に記載の電気泳動媒体。
- ポリイソブチレンと添加剤の組み合わせた重量パーセントが、分散体の総重量を基準にして0.1〜2.5%である、請求項1に記載の電気泳動媒体。
- ポリイソブチレンと添加剤の組み合わせた重量パーセントが、前記分散体の総重量を基準にして0.5〜1%である、請求項1に記載の電気泳動媒体。
- 前記非極性流体中に分散した複数の第2の荷電粒子および複数の第3の荷電粒子をさらに含み、前記第1、第2、または第3の荷電粒子が、赤色、緑色、青色、シアン色、黄色、マゼンタ色、白色、または黒色である、請求項1に記載の電気泳動媒体。
- 前記非極性流体がC6〜C18分岐アルカンを含む、請求項1に記載の電気泳動媒体。
