Description

The present invention relates to a radio communication system and an array antenna control method for realizing load modulation by controlling the impedance value of a load in an array antenna having a large number of antennas having variable load impedances as terminations.

A wireless automatic identification (Radio Frequency Identification, RFID) system called an electronic tag or ID tag is attracting attention as a new automatic recognition medium following a barcode. The RFID system is a technique for authenticating and managing a person or an article using a card (hereinafter referred to as a tag) containing a minute wireless chip. Familiar examples are popular as boarding cards, electronic money, employee ID cards, and so on. The RFID system includes a tag and a reader, and reads and writes information held by the tag in a contactless manner.

Tags are broadly divided into active and passive types. The active type tag transmits an identification signal (also called an ID signal) from the tag.
On the other hand, a passive tag authenticates an identification signal using a read signal from a reader. Passive tags have a simple structure and do not require a power source. For this reason, passive tags are the mainstream of RFID systems because they are small and can be mass-produced at low cost.

FIG. 9 is a block diagram showing a configuration of a conventional passive RFID system 100.
As shown in FIG. 9, a conventional passive RFID system 100 includes a reader antenna 110 and a tag antenna 120. The reader antenna 110 serves as a transmitter 114 and a receiver via a transmission / reception separating circuit 112. A reception load 116 is attached (see Non-Patent Document 1).

The high-frequency signal emitted from the transmitter 114 is transmitted from the reader antenna 110 and reaches the tag antenna 120. The high-frequency signal that has reached the tag antenna 120 is reflected and returns to the reader antenna 110 again.

The reflected wave returned by the transmission / reception separating means 112 attached to the reader antenna 110 reaches the reception load 116. A variable load 122 is attached to the tag antenna 120, and the phase and amplitude of the reflected wave can be changed by controlling the load impedance value. Thus, in the passive type, the load modulation method is used for communication between the reader and the tag. In load modulation, the reflected wave is controlled by changing the impedance on the tag side, and information is transmitted to the reader.

For example, by setting the load impedance (Z L ) as either a large open resistance (∞Ω) or a short-circuited 0Ω and assigning bit sequences 0 and 1, it becomes possible to transmit a signal from the tag to the reader. .

Morita et al., “Frontier of Next Generation IC Tag Development”, NTS, 2006

However, in the conventional wireless communication system, when the amount of information transmitted from the tag to the reader increases, there is a problem that transmission takes time because the transmission speed is low.

In addition, increasing the number of times the load impedance is switched per unit time of the variable load (called the symbol rate) increases the frequency band of the reflected wave, so it consumes a lot of frequency resources or is not available to other systems. If this is the case, there is a problem of causing interference. For this reason, it has been difficult to obtain a high transmission rate.

In view of the above problems, the present invention has a first object to provide a radio communication system capable of high-speed transmission, and a second object to provide an array antenna control method used in the radio communication system.

Each has a termination condition variable circuit for selecting an arbitrary element of the plurality of elements. The reader includes a transmission array antenna including a plurality of antennas for transmitting signals to the tag array antenna, and a tag array antenna. And a receiving array antenna including a plurality of antennas for receiving the reflected wave.

In the above configuration, elements having different impedance values are preferably lumped constant elements. The elements having different impedance values are preferably distributed constant elements. The elements having different impedance values are preferably composed of lumped constant elements and distributed constant elements.

In order to achieve the second object, an array antenna control method of the present invention includes a tag array antenna in which an individual termination condition variable mechanism is connected for each antenna, a transmission antenna that transmits a signal to the tag array antenna, In a wireless communication system including a reader including a receiving antenna that receives a reflected wave from a tag array antenna, a combination of a plurality of termination conditions known to the tag array antenna is sequentially given in a known order. A step of observing the reflected wave using the receiving antenna, a step of observing the reflected wave using the receiving antenna by giving a combination of a plurality of termination conditions known to the tag array antenna in an arbitrary order, and a plurality of known A combination of a plurality of known termination conditions and a reflected wave observed using a receiving antenna, given sequentially in a known order. Characterized by comprising the steps of comparing the reflected wave observed by using the reception antenna provided in any order.

Hereinafter, embodiments of the present invention will be described in detail with reference to the drawings.
FIG. 1 is a block diagram showing a configuration of a wireless communication system 1 of the present invention.
As shown in FIG. 1, the wireless communication system 1 of the present invention is a system that performs wireless communication between a reader 10 and a tag 20. The reader 10 includes a transmission array antenna 12 and a reception array antenna 14. The transmission array antenna 12 including a plurality of Mt antennas has a separate transmitter 16 for each antenna. A receiving array antenna 14 including a plurality of Mr antennas is connected to a demodulation circuit 18. The number Mt of transmission array antennas 12 and the number Mr of reception array antennas 14 may be the same.

The tag 20 includes a tag array antenna 22. The tag array antenna 22 includes a plurality of Mp antennas 24, a variable load 26 prepared for each antenna 24, and a termination condition variable circuit 28 for controlling them. The termination condition variable circuit 28 can control each variable load 26 independently.

As each antenna of the tag array antenna 22, the transmission array antenna 12 for the reader 10, and the reception array antenna 14, for example, a dipole antenna, a ground plane antenna, a slot antenna, or the like can be used. Each of these array antennas 12, 14, and 22 is composed of two or more antennas.

Each variable load 26 is controlled by a termination condition variable circuit 28 that selects an arbitrary element among a plurality of elements having different impedance values. Elements having different impedance values can be lumped constant elements or distributed constant elements. The elements having different impedance values may be a combination of a lumped constant element and a distributed constant element. As the element, for example, a plurality of resistors, variable resistors, active elements such as diodes or transistors that can obtain variable resistance characteristics can be used.

FIG. 2 is a block diagram illustrating an example of the termination condition variable circuit 28.
As shown in FIG. 2, the termination condition variable circuit 28 includes a pin diode 28a connected to the feeding point 24a of each antenna 24 of the tag array antenna 22, a capacitor 28b for direct current cut, and a bias connected to the pin diode 28a. And a circuit 28c. The antenna 24 is a dipole antenna, for example. The pin diode 28a may be selected according to the frequency. For example, a microwave pin diode may be used. When a forward voltage is applied from the bias circuit 28c to the pin diode 28a, the feeding point 24a of the antenna 24 is in a short circuit state with extremely small resistance. At this time, the load at the feeding point 24a of the antenna 24 is 0Ω. When a reverse voltage is applied from the bias circuit 28c to the pin diode 28a, the feeding point 24a of the antenna 24 is in an open state (∞Ω) with extremely high resistance. Although one antenna 24 is shown in FIG. 2, each variable load 26 of at least two tag array antennas 22 is controlled by a termination condition variable circuit 28.

As an intermediate condition, when a forward voltage lower than the rising voltage is applied to the pin diode 28a, the pin diode 28a operates as a variable resistor. Under this condition, the pin diode 28a can be an intermediate resistance between an open circuit and a short circuit. In this case, it is possible to realize a termination state in which the load at the feeding point 24a of the antenna 24 is an intermediate resistance between open and short. By using the intermediate terminal state, it is possible to realize a state where the load value is two or more. For this reason, for example, when the load value is in a quaternary state, the number of transmission bits can be 2 bits.

The transmitter 16 connected to the transmission array antenna 12 of the reader 10 generates, for example, a sine wave having a predetermined frequency.

The demodulation circuit 18 connected to the receiving array antenna 14 of the reader 10 has a function of receiving the reflected wave from the tag array antenna 22 and measuring the amplitude and phase of the reflected wave, that is, the reflection coefficient. From this reflection coefficient value, the load impedance value of the variable load 26 connected to the tag 20 can be obtained.

FIG. 3 is a diagram showing an equivalent model using S parameters of the wireless communication system 1 of the present invention. The S parameter is also called a scattering matrix, and is a measurement method using transmitted waves and reflected waves. Reference impedance Z 0 is normally 50 [Omega. The reflection coefficient or the like in the S parameter can be converted into an impedance and displayed on a Smith chart, polar coordinates, or the like.
3, (α T1 ,..., ΑT Mt ) is a signal from the transmission array antenna 12, (α P1, ..., Α PMp ) is a signal from the tag array antenna 22, ( b T1 ,..., bT Mr ) are signals to the receiving antenna, and (b P1 ,..., b PMp ) are signals to the tag array antenna 22.

A signal to the receiving array antenna 14 is expressed by the following equation (1).

Here, S RT , S RP , and S PT are scattering matrices representing transmission, and S TT and S PP are scattering matrices representing reflection and coupling of the reader 10 antenna and the tag 20 antenna, respectively.

The load impedance reflection coefficient Γ of the tag 20 is defined by the following equation (2), where α P is a reflected signal from the tag array antenna 22 and b P is an incident signal to the tag array antenna 22. .

Γ which is a reflection coefficient of the load impedance is expressed by the following equation (3) by load impedances Z 1 , Z 2 ... Z MP connected to the tag array antenna 22 and a reference impedance Z 0 .

Load impedance Z R is coupled to the tag array antenna 22 is determined by the following equation (4) from the reflection coefficients γ measured by the demodulation circuit 18.

Here, Z 0 is a reference impedance.

Thus, a possible value of the load impedance of the variable load 26 of the tag 20 can be obtained from the reflection coefficient γ measured by the demodulation circuit 18 connected to the receiving array antenna 14 of the reader 10.

As an example, a case where the transmission rate is 4 bits / symbol / tag antenna will be described. In this case, assuming that the load impedance of the variable load 26 of each bit is ∞Ω or 0Ω of short circuit, there are 16 load impedances of 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 in the case of 4 bits. Become.

FIG. 4 is a diagram showing 16 reflection coefficients γ arranged on the complex plane. The horizontal axis in FIG. 4 is the real axis, and the vertical axis is the imaginary axis. The radius of the circle in the figure is 1. As shown in FIG. 4, if the 16 reflection coefficients γ are arranged in a circle and the reflection coefficients γ are arranged so as to be farthest from each other as shown in the figure, the demodulating circuit 18 of the reader 10 makes it easy. Identified.

FIG. 5 is a flowchart showing the control of the wireless communication system 1 of FIG. 1, where (a) is a transmission array antenna 12, (b) is a reception array antenna 14, and (c) is a tag array antenna 22 control. Is shown.
First, when this control procedure is started, a signal is transmitted from the transmission antenna, that is, the transmission array antenna 12. It is assumed that the signal is continuously transmitted thereafter. Here, the signal can be an unmodulated sine wave.

The next stage is defined as the training phase. Assume that both the reader 10 and the tag 20 know in advance N combinations of termination conditions of the tag array antenna 22. This corresponds to a training signal for wireless communication. In the training phase, first, the first combination of termination conditions is given to the tag array antenna 22.
The combined Z 1, as defined below (5).

Next, the receiving array antenna 14 observes the reflected wave when the first termination condition is given. The signal vector y T1 observed at this time is defined by the following equation (6).

When this procedure is finished, the following combination of termination conditions is given and the reflected wave is observed in the same manner. That is, the reflected wave with respect to the i-th termination condition expressed by the following equation (7) is expressed by the following equation (8).

As described above, combinations of different termination conditions are given N times, and N reflected waves [y T1 , y T2 ,..., Y TN ] are observed by the receiving array antenna 14. Here, the reflected wave observed by the receiving array antenna 14 has a different value for each receiving array antenna 14.

The next stage is a data transfer phase, in which one of the known termination condition combinations, for example, the k-th termination condition combination is set in the tag array antenna 22.
Next, the receiving array antenna 14 observes the reflected wave y and estimates the one closest to the reflected wave observed in the training phase. When estimating, when using maximum likelihood estimation, i is calculated | required like following (9) Formula. The reception method using maximum likelihood estimation is called maximum likelihood composite (DML).

Further, after that, the tag array antenna 22 transmits information to the reader 10 by switching to any combination of termination conditions given in the training phase according to the data.

(Simulation of wireless communication system)
Next, simulation of the wireless communication system 1 of the present invention will be described.
The simulation was performed by using the transmitting array antenna 12 for the reader 10, the receiving array antenna 14, and the tag array antenna 22 as two-element dipole antennas. That is, the number of antennas is two.
The frequency is 2.4 GHz, the element spacing on the reader 10 side is 1λ (λ is the wavelength in vacuum), and the element spacing on the tag 20 side is 0.25λ. The noise follows a Gaussian distribution.
Channels between the reader 10 and the tag 20 and between the transmitting array antenna 12 and the receiving array antenna 14 were calculated by a ring model. The transmitter 16, the tag 20, and the receiver are assumed to randomly distribute scatterers on the horizontal plane, and the number of scatterers is set to 10.
The maximum likelihood estimation of equation (5) is used for the decoding algorithm. Symbols are expressed by changing the load impedance, and the symbol length is a time interval at which the load impedance is switched.

FIGS. 6A and 6B show examples of received signal points at the receiving antennas A and B when the impedance is changed in four ways at a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 20 dB.
As shown in FIG. 6, a circle is an ideal received signal point, and x is a received signal point to which noise has been added. As can be seen from this figure, the number of signal points is 16, as described in FIG. 4, and a transmission rate of 4 bits / symbol can be realized.

FIG. 7 is a diagram illustrating a transmission rate with respect to noise power. Here, the case where the antenna is the tag array antenna 22 and the configuration of a conventional single antenna (referred to as single input single output, SISO) were compared. Further, the transmission rate is assumed to be multi-valued based on a bit error rate (referred to as Bit Error Rate, BER) 10 -2 . The transmission power was 20 dBm, and the distance between the reader 10 and the tag 20 and the distance between the transmitter 16 and the receiver was 3 m.
As shown in FIG. 7, when the transmission rate is 4 bits / symbol, the wireless communication system 1 of the present invention can achieve the same BER characteristics even if the noise power is 8 dB higher than SISO. It was confirmed that high-speed transmission was possible.

In the wireless communication system 1 of the present invention, when the number of antennas is two, the difference in noise power to obtain a bit error rate equivalent to that of SISO was 17.3 dB. The difference in noise power when the number of antennas was 4 and 6 was improved by 29.5 dB and 31.8 dB, respectively. As the number of antennas increased, it was improved, but the value became saturated.

From the results of FIG. 7, it can be seen that the effect becomes greater as the number of values increases, and the wireless communication system 1 of the present invention is suitable for high-speed transmission.

FIG. 8 is a diagram showing the bit error rate with respect to the distance between the reader 10 and the tag 20. The horizontal axis in FIG. 8 is the distance (m) between the reader 10 and the tag 20, and the vertical axis is the bit error rate. The transmission power is changed to 10 m, 20 dBm, and 30 dBm, and the bit error rate is a value when considering a propagation loss in free space. As in the case of FIG. 7, the number of antennas is two for each of the transmitting array antenna 12 for the reader 10, the receiving array antenna 14, and the tag array antenna 22. The noise power is constant at −100 dBm, and the transmission rate is 4 bits / symbol.

As shown in FIG. 8, when the BER is 10 -2 as a reference, communication is possible up to 4.1 m when the transmission power is 10 dBm (10 mW) and up to 12.9 m when the transmission power is 30 dBm (1000 mW). I understand.
