Description

本発明は、電界等の作用により可逆的に視認状態を変化させることができる電気泳動表示装置の製造方法に関する。   The present invention relates to a method for manufacturing an electrophoretic display device capable of reversibly changing a visual state by the action of an electric field or the like.

In recent years, demands for reducing power consumption, thinning and weight reduction, flexibility, etc. of display displays have been increasing, and electronic paper has attracted attention as one of them. An electrophoretic display device using electrophoretic ink or the like is known as one of such electronic papers. This electrophoretic display device has a configuration in which two electrode substrates, at least one of which is transparent, are arranged to face each other, and an electrophoretic ink is provided between the electrodes arranged to face each other to form a display panel. A display is obtained on the transparent electrode surface by applying an electric field to the display panel.

用いる電気泳動インクは、一種類ないしは複数種の電荷をもった電気泳動粒子が、分散媒に分散されたものであり、外部から電界を付与することにより、粒子が分散媒中を移動して、任意の表示を得るものである。この電気泳動インクには、電気泳動粒子の他に非帯電粒子や、界面活性剤、染料、分散剤、などの添加剤が付与される場合もある。   The electrophoretic ink to be used is one in which one or more kinds of electrophoretic particles are dispersed in a dispersion medium. By applying an electric field from the outside, the particles move in the dispersion medium, An arbitrary display is obtained. In addition to the electrophoretic particles, the electrophoretic ink may be provided with additives such as uncharged particles, surfactants, dyes, and dispersants.

Such an electrophoretic display device can obtain a desired display by moving the electrophoretic particles in the electrophoretic ink by controlling the direction of the electric field. It has the advantages of being as wide as ordinary printed matter, having low power consumption, and having a display memory property.
However, the electrophoretic particles used in the electrophoretic ink have a problem that the particles are likely to aggregate due to long-term storage, and the display is liable to be deteriorated due to uneven distribution of particles during repeated display. Therefore, a method is known in which the electrophoretic ink is divided into a large number of finely isolated cells (small compartments) and filled to thereby suppress aggregation and uneven distribution of particles.

この電気泳動インクを微細に隔離するセル(小区画)の形成には、マイクロカプセル、エンボス、フォトレジスト等を用いて形成するものであるが、マイクロカプセル以外の方法を用いる場合には、電気泳動粒子同士の凝集や偏在を抑制するために、一方の基板側に形成された構造体と、他方の基板の間に隙間ができないように接着剤等を介して接着させることが必要となる。   The cells (small compartments) that finely isolate the electrophoretic ink are formed using microcapsules, embossing, photoresist, etc., but if a method other than microcapsules is used, electrophoresis is performed. In order to suppress aggregation and uneven distribution of particles, it is necessary to bond the structure formed on one substrate side with an adhesive or the like so that there is no gap between the other substrate.

Therefore, as a method for adhering the upper surface of the structure and the counter substrate through an adhesive, for example, 1) via a porous spacer between a pair of opposed electrode plates, at least one of which is configured to be transparent In an electrophoretic display device having a structure in which a dispersion system in which electrophoretic particles are dispersed is divided into a discontinuous phase and enclosed, one of the counter electrode plates is configured to be flexible, and the other electrode plate is It is composed of a transparent rigid body, and is configured to have at least a thermoplastic adhesive layer that can be thermally fused to the flexible electrode plate with respect to the porous spacer interposed between the two electrode plates. 2) As a method of bonding the upper surface of the structure and the counter substrate with an adhesive, for example, a pair of electrode substrates facing each other and the electrode substrate Sealed with bulkhead located between In the method of manufacturing an electrophoretic display device in which an electrophoretic dispersion liquid (hereinafter referred to as “electrophoretic ink”) is accommodated in a plurality of configured cells, the height of the top plane of one electrode substrate is uneven. A partition forming step of forming a partition so as to be 10% or less of the thickness of the electrode substrate, and an adhesive for forming an adhesive layer having a width of 10 to 100% of the width of the top plane on the top plane of the partition The agent layer forming step, the filling step of filling each portion surrounded by the partition wall with an electrophoretic ink containing at least electrophoretic particles and a dispersion, and the other electrode substrate fixed to the adhesive layer constitute a cell. There is known a method for manufacturing an electrophoretic display device (see, for example, Patent Document 2) characterized by having an adhering step. In addition, the said structure may be called a spacer, a pillar, a partition, a rib, etc.

In the method of adhering the upper surface of the structure and the counter substrate described in Patent Documents 1 and 2 and the like through an adhesive layer, it avoids inadvertent adhesion to the counter surface during the bonding process or storage. In order to remove excess particles in the ink application process, it is desirable that the adhesive layer is not tacky (tack-free). In the case of using an adhesive material, as a method for avoiding accidental adhesion, a method of forming an easily peelable layer such as a silicone film on the opposite substrate surface is also known. Will not be able to achieve its original purpose.

一方で、フィルム基材を用いる場合、基材の耐熱温度や、膨張・収縮などの抑制を考慮すると低温プロセスが望ましいが、低温で接着可能な低Tg(ガラス転移温度)の熱可塑性接着剤(いわゆるホットメルト接着剤)は、室温で粘着性(タック性)がある場合が多く、前述した問題と両立できないという課題があるのが現状である。   On the other hand, when a film substrate is used, a low temperature process is desirable in consideration of the heat resistant temperature of the substrate and the suppression of expansion and contraction, but a low Tg (glass transition temperature) thermoplastic adhesive that can be bonded at low temperatures ( So-called hot melt adhesives) are often sticky (tackiness) at room temperature and have a problem that they cannot be compatible with the above-mentioned problems.

On the other hand, a plurality of cells partitioned by partition walls are formed between two opposing substrates, at least one of which is transparent, and at least one or more types of powder particles composed of at least one type of powder particles in the cells. An information display panel manufacturing method for encapsulating a display medium and displaying information by moving the display medium by an electric field generated in a substrate, wherein an adhesive is formed on the upper surface of a partition wall. 1) Synchronizing with the horizontal movement of the substrate on which the partition walls are formed, rotating the transfer roll with the adhesive attached to the surface in contact with the upper surface of the partition wall, thereby rotating the adhesive attached to the transfer roll. A method for manufacturing an information display panel, which is transferred to the upper surface of the partition wall (for example, see Patent Document 3). 2) A film with an adhesive on the surface in synchronization with the horizontal movement of the substrate on which the partition wall is formed. A method of manufacturing an information display panel (for example, patent), wherein the adhesive of the film with adhesive is transferred to the upper surface of the partition wall by rotating the supported transfer roll in contact with the upper surface of the partition wall. Document 4) is known.

しかしながら、上記特許文献3及び4に示される当該パネルは、電極基板間に粉体を封じ込めた表示媒体であり、液体の電気泳動インクを用いた電気泳動表示装置とは基本的に技術思想が異なるものである。   However, the panels shown in Patent Documents 3 and 4 above are display media in which powder is enclosed between electrode substrates, and basically differ in technical idea from electrophoretic display devices using liquid electrophoretic ink. Is.

Below, it demonstrates concretely, referring FIG.1 (a)-(f) and FIG.2 (a)-(c) for every process.

<構造体形成工程>
構造体形成工程では、第一の電極基板100上に立設した絶縁性の構造体103,103…からなる複数の小部屋(セル104,104…)を形成する(図1(a)参照)。複数のセル104は、立設した構造体103によりそれぞれ分離されており、円形、矩形(長方形、正方形)、六角形等の様々な形状で設けることができる。なお、構造体103は、その形状や目的から、スペーサ、柱、隔壁、リブ等と称される場合がある。
<Structure formation process>
In the structure forming step, a plurality of small chambers (cells 104, 104...) Composed of insulating structures 103, 103... Standing on the first electrode substrate 100 are formed (see FIG. 1A). . The plurality of cells 104 are separated from each other by the standing structure 103 and can be provided in various shapes such as a circle, a rectangle (rectangle, square), and a hexagon. Note that the structure body 103 may be referred to as a spacer, a column, a partition wall, a rib, or the like depending on the shape and purpose.

The structure 103 erected on the first electrode substrate 100 can be formed using a resin material such as a PET film. For example, a plurality of cells 104 can be formed by laser processing a synthetic resin such as a PET film having a certain thickness to form a shape such as a square, hexagon, or circle. A plurality of cells 104 can be formed by forming an insulating layer over the first electrode layer 102 and then patterning the insulating layer using a photolithography method. In addition, it is possible to form a cell 104 made of a cross-shaped structure 103 by forming a thermoplastic resin on the first electrode layer 102 and using a method such as hot embossing.

The first electrode substrate 100 only needs to be a substrate having an electrode. For example, as shown in FIG. 1A, the first electrode substrate 102 has a structure in which a first electrode layer 102 is provided on a first base material 101. An insulating structure 103 can be formed over the first electrode layer 102.
The first substrate 101 is, for example, a transparent inorganic material such as glass, quartz, sapphire, MgO, LiF, CaF 2 , an organic polymer film such as fluorine resin, polyester, polycarbonate, polyethylene, polyethylene terephthalate, or ceramic. Can be used.

The first electrode layer 102 is made of, for example, a transparent conductive material such as ITO, ZnO, SnO 2 , aluminum (Al), gold (Au), platinum (Pt), copper (Cu), silver (Ag), nickel It can be formed using a metal such as (Ni) or chromium (Cr). Further, conductive polymers such as PODET / PVS and PODET / PSS, and transparent conductive materials such as titanium oxide, zinc oxide, and tin oxide may be used. These materials can be formed by methods such as vapor deposition, ion plating, and sputtering. The shape of the 1st electrode layer 102 can be suitably selected according to the shape of the 2nd electrode layer used as a counter electrode. Note that the first electrode layer 102 may be provided in contact with the first base material 101, or a TFT element or the like may be provided over the first base material 101.

本発明方法において、第一の電極基板100が前面側電極基板となる場合には、第一の電極基板100を介して電気泳動インクで形成される文字等の表示を視認するため、第一の基材101、第一の電極層102としては、透光性を有する材料で形成することが好ましい。   In the method of the present invention, when the first electrode substrate 100 is the front electrode substrate, the first electrode substrate 100 is used to visually recognize the display of characters or the like formed with the electrophoretic ink. The base material 101 and the first electrode layer 102 are preferably formed using a light-transmitting material.

<Adhesive layer forming step>
In the method of the present invention, in the adhesive layer forming step, a thermoplastic adhesive layer 105 is formed on the upper surface of the structure 103 (see FIGS. 1A, 1B, and 1C).
After the thermoplastic adhesive layer 105 to be used is heated and melted / softened, or dissolved / dispersed in a solvent and flowable, it is applied to the upper surface of the structure 103 to form the adhesive layer 105. By curing, the adhesive can be fixed only on the upper surface of the structure 103. This makes it possible to suppress the inflow of the thermoplastic adhesive into the cell.
The thermoplastic adhesive used is capable of forming an adhesive layer on the upper surface of the structure and does not flow out into the solvent contained when the electrophoretic ink is filled. The main components include EVA, polyethylene, polyamide, and polyester. Resin material is mentioned. Further, from the viewpoint of forming a thin and uniform coating film, these resin materials may be preferably dissolved or dispersed in a solvent such as aromatic, ketone or water.
Furthermore, for the reasons described above, a resin material that dissolves or softens with a low melting point and a low Tg is desirable.
As an example of the thermoplastic adhesive dissolved in the solvent, Byron 10ss, 30SS, 30XS, 50AS, 50DS, 50TS, 53SS, 55ss, GK18CS, GK19C (above, manufactured by Toyobo Co., Ltd., amorphous polyester resin adhesive) , Byron UR3200, UR8700 (above, manufactured by Toyobo, polyester urethane adhesive), PES-310S30, PES-310SA40, PES-320S30, PES-340S30, PES-345S30, PES-380S30, PES-390S30, PES-390SA45 (The above is a polyester adhesive manufactured by Toagosei Co., Ltd.).

In the method of the present invention, the thermoplastic adhesive layer 105 can be formed by using various methods such as gravure printing, screen printing, ink jetting, transfer, etc. according to the characteristics of the thermoplastic adhesive used. Is preferably used. In this embodiment, a transfer method is used, and as shown in FIGS. 1A to 1C, the base material 300 on which the thermoplastic adhesive 301 is formed is brought into contact with the upper surface of the structure 103. A part of the adhesive can be transferred to the upper surface of the structure 103 by peeling it off after being removed. This is because the adhesive layer 105 can be selectively and easily formed on the upper surface of the structure 103 by using the transfer method.
The thickness of the adhesive layer 105 varies depending on the size of the electrophoretic display device, the application, the size of the structure, etc., and is 1 μm or more from the viewpoint of sufficiently expressing the adhesive force, and In order to maintain the shape of the structure, it is desirable to set the gap between the substrates to 5 to 40%. The area of the adhesive layer 105 formed on the top surface of the structure body 103 is preferably 40 to 110% with respect to the top surface area of the structure body 103.

<インク充填工程>

In the drawings of this embodiment, the electrophoretic ink 106 is filled using a die coater 400. Since the electrophoretic ink 106 includes charged electrophoretic particles, a place where there is no strong electric field or static electricity is desirable, and further, a place where there is no vibration or inclination is desirable in order to prevent the uneven distribution of particles.

In the method of the present invention, when the electrophoretic ink is filled, the gas dissolved or entrained in the electrophoretic ink is removed, and the display range is filled with air or the like before, during or after the filling. It is preferable to prevent gas from entering or remaining as much as possible.
As a specific method, each step is performed in a reduced pressure environment, or after each is applied, it is allowed to stand in a reduced pressure environment.
As a result, the gap between the electrophoretic ink and the replacement of the air in the cell with the electrophoretic ink can be promoted, and the possibility of bubbles remaining in the panel can be reduced. Since mixing of bubbles between the substrates after sealing) is suppressed, display unevenness, display defects, deterioration due to bubble growth, etc. are suppressed, and an electrophoretic display device having stable display quality over a long period of time is obtained. Is possible.

また、基板表面の汚れを予め除去するために、溶剤による洗浄等の処理、例えば、アルコール類による洗浄等を組み合わせて行うことにより、より効果的にぬれ性の調整が可能となる。
絶縁性の構造体103からなる複数のセル104,104…の内壁や角部分等まで十分に電気泳動インクを行き渡らせ、空気等の気体を絶縁性の構造体103,103…からなる複数のセル104,104…内から追い出すために好ましい工程である。

These may be used in combination, and are not limited to these.
Further, in order to remove the contamination on the substrate surface in advance, the wettability can be adjusted more effectively by combining treatment such as washing with a solvent, for example, washing with alcohol.
The electrophoretic ink is sufficiently distributed to the inner walls and corners of the plurality of cells 104, 104... Made of the insulating structure 103, and a plurality of cells made of gas such as air are made of the insulating structures 103, 103. 104, 104... Is a preferred process for expelling from within.

In addition, examples of the degassing method when filling the electrophoretic ink include a method of filling while heating, a method of filling under reduced pressure, and the like, but are not limited thereto.
On the other hand, as a degassing method after filling with electrophoretic ink, there are a method of applying ultrasonic waves to the substrate after filling, a method of heating, a method of centrifugal force, a method of keeping under reduced pressure, a method of leaving for a certain time, etc. Although it is mentioned, it is not limited to these.

<Intervening layer forming step>
In the method of the present invention, an intervening layer is formed on the thermoplastic adhesive layer 105 formed on the upper surface of the structure.
Even if the thermoplastic adhesive with tackiness is used, the intervening layer in this step is tack-free to reduce adhesion and friction with the adherend during bonding, and to slip and re-peel For example, as shown in FIG. 1E, a thermoplastic adhesive layer formed on the upper surface of the structure 103 is formed to facilitate positioning (temporary arrangement). The thermoplastic adhesive layer 105 formed on the upper surface of the structure 103 as shown in FIG. 1 (f), or as shown in FIG. It can be configured by separately interposing fine particles on the upper surface.
The intervening layer 107 formed by the solvent and / or particles (electrophoretic particles) of the electrophoretic ink, or the intervening layer 108 formed by separately interposing fine particles, includes two electrode substrates as described later. Is removed by a load or pressure means in the laminating step, specifically, the solvent is removed from the adhesive layer by escaping to both sides of the adhesive layer. The fine particles are removed from the adhesive layer by being buried in an adhesive layer softened by heating or the like, whereby the intervening layer 107 or 108 is removed and the thermoplastic adhesive layer 105 has a predetermined adhesive strength. To recover.

In the intervening layer composed of the solvent and / or particles of the ink, when the electrophoretic ink 106 is filled, the solvent contained in the electrophoretic ink 106, preferably the hydrocarbon-based solvent and / or particles, is the structure 103. It is formed in contact with at least the upper surface which is the upper layer of the thermoplastic adhesive layer 105 on the upper surface. Alternatively, one or more of the above solvents can be directly applied to the upper surface of the thermoplastic adhesive layer 105 by, for example, an inkjet method, a die coater, a spray, or the like.

In addition, the intervening layer of fine particles to be separately provided is tack-free by being attached to the upper surface of the thermoplastic adhesive layer 105 on the upper surface of the structure 103.
As the fine particles to be separately interposed, for example, inorganic fine particles such as silica, alumina, titanium, sodium chloride, potassium chloride, and inorganic oxide fine particles, and organic fine particles such as polyurethane, acrylic, epoxy, cellulose, and starch can be used. Each composite material may be used. Preferably, it is desirable to use inorganic fine particles and inorganic oxide fine particles having a particle size smaller than the film thickness of the adhesive layer and having no influence on the ink or ink solvent.
The amount used to form the intervening layer with the ink solvent and / or particles, or the intervening layer with finely intervening fine particles varies depending on the environmental temperature, the type of the thermoplastic adhesive, etc. The amount of the adhesive layer 105 is adjusted so as to be tack-free. In addition, since the intervening layer using only the solvent of the ink can act as a solvent for the charged electrophoretic ink after the removal, as described later, the amount of solvent of the electrophoretic ink to be filled is determined as the solvent for forming the intervening layer. The amount of the solvent in the ink filling step may be adjusted slightly in advance so as to contain the amount.

この仮配置工程は、前記第一の電極基板100に第二の電極基板200とを対向させて仮配置するものであり、上記インクの溶媒及び/又は粒子や、別途介在させた微粒子による介在層107、108により、熱可塑性接着剤層105の上層はタックフリーとなり、第二の電極基板200の貼り合わせ時、被着面との密着性や摩擦を低減し、すべりや再剥離を容易とすることで、仮配置(位置決め)を正確に行うことができるものとなる。
<Temporary placement step, see FIGS. 2A and 2B>
This temporary arrangement step is a temporary arrangement in which the second electrode substrate 200 is opposed to the first electrode substrate 100, and the intervening layer is composed of the solvent and / or particles of the ink or fine particles separately provided. 107 and 108, the upper layer of the thermoplastic adhesive layer 105 becomes tack-free, and when the second electrode substrate 200 is bonded, adhesion and friction with the adherend surface are reduced, and sliding and re-peeling are facilitated. Thus, temporary arrangement (positioning) can be performed accurately.

<Bonding process>
In the method of the present invention, as shown in FIG. 2 (b), the bonding step is a load or pressure in a state where the first electrode substrate 100 and the second electrode substrate 200 are arranged to face each other by the temporary placement step. By removing the intervening layer 107 or 108 by means, the adhesive force of the thermoplastic adhesive layer is recovered, and the first electrode substrate 100 and the second electrode substrate 200 are bonded together by thermal bonding. It is. Through this step, the electrophoretic ink 106 is sealed in the cell 104, and the electrophoretic display device A shown in FIG. 2C is manufactured.

本貼り合わせ工程における熱接着させる手段としては、例えば、加熱ローラー、加熱加圧ローラー、加熱プレス、などにより行うことができ、好ましくは、貼り合わせ面の空気を順次押し出して除去、並びに、介在層の除去も可能な点から、加熱加圧ローラー(いわゆる熱ラミネーター)が望ましい。   As a means for heat bonding in the present bonding step, for example, a heating roller, a heating pressure roller, a heating press, and the like can be used. Preferably, the air on the bonding surface is sequentially removed and removed, and an intervening layer is used. In view of the possibility of removal, a heat and pressure roller (so-called thermal laminator) is desirable.

The present bonding process will be described in detail. In the intervening layer made of an ink solvent, a load or pressure means, a bonding width and an object to be bonded are taken into consideration, and specifically, a load of about 0.1 to 1000 N is applied. The intermediate layer 107 by the solvent is removed from the adhesive layer in such a manner as to escape to both sides of the adhesive layer by a pressure means such as a laminator or an elastic body applied with a load of 0.1 to 100 kPa and surface pressing with a flat plate. Thus, the adhesive force of the thermoplastic adhesive 105 is recovered, and the first electrode substrate 100 and the second electrode substrate 200 are bonded.
In addition, in the intervening layer 108 of ink particles or fine particles separately provided, specifically, the heating and softening are performed by using the above-described load and pressure means while heating to a temperature higher than the temperature at which the adhesive layer softens. The fine particles are buried in the adhesive layer and removed from the adhesive layer, and the adhesive force of the thermoplastic adhesive 105 is restored to bond the first electrode substrate 100 and the second electrode substrate 200 together. It is.
Further, in the intervening layer formed of the ink solvent and particles, the thermoplastic adhesive is obtained by removing the intervening layer from the adhesive layer in a combination of the above-described mode of removing the solvent and the mode of embedding the particles in the adhesive layer. The first electrode substrate 100 and the second electrode substrate 200 are bonded to each other by restoring the adhesive force 105.
The target electrophoretic display device (electrophoretic display panel) can be obtained through the above steps.

The second electrode substrate 200 used in the method of the present invention is the same as the first electrode substrate 100 described above, and can be constituted by the second base material 201 and the second electrode layer 202, for example, transparent Light transmissive materials such as resin film, transparent glass, etc. formed by coating conductive materials such as ITO by vapor deposition methods such as coating methods, ion plating methods, sputtering methods, etc., resin films, resin plates, glass, ceramics, etc. It is possible to use a metal plate or a material in which a conductive material film (layer) such as metal is formed on the surface of the non-conductive substance. In addition, when the first electrode substrate 100 and the second electrode substrate 200 are bonded together, the bonding process may be performed in a vacuum to further prevent bubbles from entering the display area.

In the method of the present invention, after the substrates 100 and 200 are bonded to each other in the above-described step to form an electrophoretic ink, another light-transmissive electrode is formed on the substrate according to the use (use application, rewriting method, etc.) of the electrophoretic display device. It is also possible to bond with a non-light transmissive electrode, a resin film, resin, wood, metal, ceramics, paper, cloth and / or glass.
In addition, when a resin film is used for the substrate, the solvent permeation suppression effect and the gas permeation suppression effect may be increased by bonding a resin film having a solvent permeation suppression effect and a gas permeation suppression effect and other base materials. Is possible.
In addition, in order to increase the strength of the electrophoretic display device, it is possible to attach and reinforce another base material, or to attach paper or cloth as another base material for decoration of the display device.

また、本発明方法により得られる電気泳動表示装置は、高コントラストな表示の実現と、繰り返し表示時においても高い信頼性を持ってコントラスト表示することができ、応答性にも優れ、表示特性の劣化がきわめて少ない電気泳動表示装置となるものである。

(Based on Example 1, FIG. 1 and FIG. 2)
<Structure formation process>
After the acrylate resist film was bonded to the first electrode substrate (ITO-PET film) using a vacuum laminator, a structure having a honeycomb pattern was formed by a photoresist method.

<Adhesive formation process>
A thermoplastic adhesive diluted with a solvent (hot melt resin, Byron 55ss, manufactured by Toyobo Co., Ltd.) on a PET film (trade name “Lumirror”, thickness 50 μm, manufactured by Toray Industries, Inc.) is formed into a film thickness of 12 μm using a comma roll. After application, it was dried. Next, the PET film on which the thermoplastic adhesive layer is formed and the first electrode substrate on which the structure is formed are passed through a thermal laminator at 120 ° C. and peeled off in a heated state, whereby PET A part of the thermoplastic adhesive layer formed on the film was transferred to the upper surface of the structure. The film thickness of the thermoplastic adhesive layer formed on the entire top surface of the structure was 6-8 μm.

<Ink filling process>
After cooling the thermoplastic adhesive formed on the upper surface of the structure, electrophoresis ink [white particles (lipophilic surface-treated titanium oxide) (negatively charged) 10 mass using a die coater on the first electrode substrate %, Black particles (acrylic particles colored with carbon black) (positive charge) 10% by mass, hydroxylaurylamine 3% by mass, and ISOPAR G (boiling point 153 to 180 ° C.) 77% by mass) as a solvent] The cell made of the structure was filled with electrophoretic ink.
Next, an ultraviolet curable adhesive (TB3052D, manufactured by Three Bond Co., Ltd.) was applied to the outer periphery of the portion where the electrophoretic ink was formed using a dispenser to form a main seal portion.

<Intervening layer formation process, temporary arrangement process, bonding process>
When the electrophoretic ink is filled, the thermoplastic adhesive layer is formed by applying the ink about 5 μm thick to the upper surface of the structure on which the adhesive layer is formed, and forming the electrophoretic ink layer on the upper surface of the structure. An intervening layer was formed on the upper layer. Next, the second electrode substrate serving as the counter substrate with respect to the first electrode substrate was positioned at a predetermined position while being finely adjusted. At this time, the formation of the intervening layer makes it tack-free and positioning is easy.
After the positioning, the second electrode substrate that is the counter substrate is bonded to the first electrode substrate by passing twice between the heating and pressing rollers set at 120 ° C. (within 10 seconds each time). It was. At this time, the solvent as the intervening layer and the fine particles in the ink were removed by pressure means (a laminator with a load of 100 N), and the thermoplastic adhesive recovered to the original adhesive force and developed a predetermined adhesive force. .
At the time of bonding, an electrophoretic display device was produced by irradiating the main seal portion formed on the outer periphery of the cell forming portion with ultraviolet rays to cure the ultraviolet curable adhesive.

(Example 2)
In Example 1 described above, the intervening layer was made of silica fine particles, and was brought into contact with the adhesive layer formed in advance on the upper surface of the structure prior to the ink application step, and was adhered by the adhesive force (tack) of the adhesive layer. Furthermore, after the structure forming surface was faced down and vibration was applied, air blowing was performed to remove excess fine particles.
After forming the intervening layer, an electrophoretic display device was produced through the same process as the ink filling process of Example 1 above.
In Example 2, a thermoplastic adhesive layer having a thickness of 6 μm and silica fine particles of 1 μm or less was used. Due to the formation of this intervening layer, it becomes tack-free and positioning is easy.
After the positioning, similarly to Example 1, the heating and pressing roller set at 120 ° C. was passed twice, and the second electrode substrate serving as the counter substrate was bonded to the first electrode substrate. . At this time, the intervening layer was buried in the adhesive layer and removed by a laminator having a load of 100 N, and the thermoplastic adhesive layer recovered the predetermined adhesive force and developed the predetermined adhesive force.

(Example 3)
In Example 1, the electrophoretic display device was manufactured through the same steps as in Example 1 except that the intervening layer was an ink solvent (Isoper G) and the intervening layer was formed.
In Example 3, the thickness of the thermoplastic adhesive layer was 6 μm, and the thickness of the intervening layer was 5 μm. Due to the formation of this intervening layer, it becomes tack-free and positioning is easy.
After the positioning, in the same manner as in Example 1, the heating and pressing roller set at 120 ° C. was passed twice to bond the second electrode substrate serving as the counter substrate to the first electrode substrate. At this time, the intervening layer was removed by a laminator having a load of 100 N, and the thermoplastic adhesive layer recovered the predetermined adhesive force and developed the predetermined adhesive force. Further, the amount of the solvent (Isopar G) used in the ink filling step is 5 to 5 so that the ink composition to be sealed has the concentration of the electrophoretic ink composition of Example 1 (final solvent concentration of 77% by mass). It was set to be about 20% by mass.

Bubbles were not mixed in the display areas of the electrophoretic display devices obtained in Examples 1 to 3, and the distance between the electrode substrates was uniform. Furthermore, there was no problem with the adhesion of the seal portion. It was confirmed that high-contrast monochrome display was possible by alternately applying a voltage of ± 50 V between the electrode substrates of the electrophoretic display device.
Furthermore, even after the obtained electrophoretic display device was allowed to stand for 1 month at 50 ° C. under dry conditions, an electrophoretic display device in which display characteristics did not change from the initial state and display resistance was hardly deteriorated was obtained. Moreover, the appearance of bubbles growing in the cells was not seen, the distance between the electrode substrates could be controlled uniformly, the adhesion between the electrode substrates was securely bonded, and the substrates were not peeled off.
