本発明は、米国仮特許出願第61/063,986号(出願日2008年2月7日、発明名称「Microstructured Transmission Optical Fiber」)及び米国仮特許出願第61/126,608号(出願日2008年5月6日、発明名称「Microstructured Transmission Optical Fiber」)の利益及び優先権を主張し、これらの出願の内容は、参照することによって全体が本願に包含される。

本発明は、以下の実施例によってさらに説明される。他に記載が無くとも、以下の実施例の各々において、ファイバがドローされた際は、ファイバは従来のコーティングを用いてコーティングされる(すなわち従来のアクリレート(acrylate)ベースの主コーティング及び補助コーティング)。
490グラムのSiO2(0.39g/cc密度)スートが外部気相堆積法(OVD)を用いて、完全に硬化された1メートル長×20mm直径ステップインデックス(約0.34パーセントデルタ、0.43コア/クラッド直径比を有する)の中空でないGeO2−SiO2コア−SiO2クラッドボイド無しコアケインに堆積されたので、硬化されたボイド無しコア領域を含むプリフォーム(ブランク、光学ブランク、または光プリフォームと称される)が形成され、当該コア領域は、硬化されたボイド無しシリカクラッド領域によって囲繞され、当該シリカクラッド領域は、スートシリカ領域によって囲繞された。このアセンブリのスートクラッドは、その後、以下の様に焼結させられた。このアセンブリは、最初に、ヘリウム、10パーセントの塩素、1パーセントのCO(全て体積ガスパーセント)から成る雰囲気内で2時間、炉の上部領域部分1100℃で乾燥させられた。その後、200mm/分(下方移動プロセスの間のスートプリフォームの外側の温度の約100℃/分の上昇に対応して)で、100パーセントクリプトン(体積パーセント)焼結雰囲気内で約1500℃に設定された高温領域を通って下方に移動させられた。このプリフォームアセンブリは、その後、高温領域を通して100mm/分(下方移動プロセスの間のスートプリフォームの外側の約50℃/分の温度上昇に対応して)で再度(すなわち2度目)下方に移動させられた。このプリフォームアセンブリは、その後、高温領域を通して50mm/分(下方移動プロセスの間のスートプリフォームの外側の約25℃/分の温度上昇に対応して)で再度(すなわち3度目)下方に移動させられた。このプリフォームアセンブリは、その後、高温領域を通して25mm/分(下方移動プロセスの間のスートプリフォームの外側の約12.5℃/分の温度上昇に対応して)で再度(すなわち4度目)下方に移動させられ、最後に、6mm/分(約3℃/分加熱速度)で焼結され、このスートが、クリプトン散在シリカオーバークラッドプリフォームに焼結された。下方移動ステップの各々に続いて、このプリフォームアセンブリは、炉の上部領域部分内(1100℃設定に維持されている)に200mm/分で上方移動させられた。最初の一連のより速い下方送り速度は、光ファイバプリフォームの外側をグレージング(glaze)するのに使用され、このことはプリフォーム内にガスを捕捉することを容易にする。プリフォームは、その後、1000℃に設定されたアルゴンパージ保持炉内に24時間置かれ、プリフォーム内に残留しているヘリウムが放出させられた。このプリフォームは、その後、約1780℃に設定された従来のグラファイトリドロー炉においてアルゴン雰囲気内でリドローされ、ボイド無しGeO2−SiO2コア、ボイド無しSiO2クラッド、クリプトンが散在している(クリプトンガスを含んだ不規則に配されたボイド)シリカオーバークラッドケインにされた。このケインは11mmの直径で1メートルの長さである。11mmケインの1つは、旋盤(lathe)内に戻され、そこで4000グラムの追加SiO2(0.42g/cc密度)スートがOVDによって堆積させられた。このアセンブリに対する当該クラッド(オーバークラッドとも称される)のスートは、その後、以下のように焼結させられた。このアセンブリは、最初にヘリウム及び3パーセントの塩素雰囲気下、1100℃で2時間乾燥させられ、その後、100%ヘリウム(質量%)雰囲気で1500℃に設定されている高温領域を通って6mm/分で下方に移動させられて、スートが、酸化ゲルマニウム含有ボイド無しコア、シリカボイド無し内側クラッド、クリプトン散在シリカリング(すなわち、クリプトンを含むボイドを有するシリカ)、及びボイド無しオーバークラッドプリフォームに焼結させられた。プリフォームは、1000℃に設定されたアルゴンパージ保持炉内に24時間置かれ、プリフォームからヘリウムが放出させられた。この光ファイバプリフォームは、125ミクロン直径光ファイバとして10kmドローされ、この光ファイバは、10m/sで約1900℃から2000℃のヘリウム雰囲気の耐グラファイト炉において約4.5ミクロンのコア半径を有し、当該耐グラファイト炉は、以下の表1に記載されているような、要素長さが4インチまたは8インチで3.5インチの内側直径を有している。光プリフォームの温度は、光ファイバの張力を監視して調整することによって制御させられた;このファイバ張力は、ファイバドロー距離の各々の部分の間で50グラムと600グラムとの間の1つの値に維持された。値は表1に列挙している。実施例1−4として示されるこれらのファイバの光学特性及び物理特性(SEM解析を含む)も表1に列挙されている。

実施例9−16に示されているファイバは、表1に示されたプロセスの相違を除いては、実施例1−4及び5−8に関して説明されてきたのと同様のプロセスを用いて形成された。この光ファイバプリフォームは、約4.5ミクロンのコア半径を有する125ミクロン直径で10km長の光ファイバにドローされた。

- 光から成る光信号を伝送するシングルモードマイクロ構造光ファイバであって、前記光ファイバが、
長手方向中心線周りに配されて第1の屈折率の屈折率プロファイルを有するコア領域と、
不規則に配されたボイドを含むボイド含有環状領域を含んで前記コア領域を囲繞するクラッド領域と、を有し、
前記不規則に配されたボイドが、前記ボイド含有領域において2パーセントから10パーセントの間の区域ボイド領域パーセントであり、前記ボイド含有領域内で平均ボイド数密度はマイクロ平方メートル毎に0.5よりも大きく、前記ファイバが1500nm未満の22メートルカットオフ波長を有していることを特徴とするシングルモードマイクロ構造ファイバ。 - 請求項1に記載のシングルモードファイバであって、前記ボイド含有環状領域が前記コアから少なくとも1ミクロン離間しており、前記環状領域が2ミクロンから10ミクロンの間の幅を有していることを特徴とするシングルモードファイバ。
- 請求項1に記載のシングルモードファイバであって、前記ファイバが1260nm未満の22メートルカットオフ波長を有することを特徴とするシングルモードファイバ。
- 請求項1に記載のシングルモードファイバであって、前記ボイド含有領域内の前記平均ボイド数密度がマイクロ平方メートル毎に2よりも大きいことを特徴とするシングルモードファイバ。
- 請求項1に記載のシングルモードファイバであって、前記ボイド含有領域が、ボイド含有環状領域の周囲及び幅に亘ってかつ前記ファイバの長さに沿って、1mより大きいファイバ長さ全体に対して10mm直径の一巻き毎に2dBよりも小さい最大曲げ損失をもたらすのに十分なボイド分布一様性を有することを特徴とするシングルモードファイバ。
- 請求項1に記載のシングルモードファイバであって、前記ボイド含有環状領域が、前記ファイバを断面で見た場合に200個よりも多いボイドを含んでいることを特徴とするシングルモードファイバ。

- 請求項10に記載のシングルモードファイバであって、前記ボイド含有環状領域内のボイドが、窒素、二酸化炭素、アルゴン、クリプトンもしくは二酸化硫黄の少なくとも1つを加えた2000重量ppmよりも多い量の塩素を含むことを特徴とするシングルモードファイバ。
- 請求項10に記載のシングルモードファイバであって、前記ボイド含有環状領域内のボイドが、窒素、二酸化炭素、アルゴン、クリプトンもしくは二酸化硫黄の少なくとも1つを加えた3000重量ppmよりも多い量の塩素を含むことを特徴とするシングルモードファイバ。
- 請求項1に記載のシングルモードファイバであって、前記ボイド含有領域が、前記ボイド含有環状領域の周囲及び幅に亘ってかつ前記ファイバの長さに沿って、10mm直径マンドレル一巻き毎に1dB未満の最大曲げ損失をもたらすのに十分なボイド分布一様性を有していることを特徴とするシングルモードファイバ。
- 請求項1に記載のシングルモードファイバであって、前記ボイド含有領域が、前記ボイド含有環状領域の周囲及び幅に亘ってかつ前記ファイバの長さに沿って、10mm直径マンドレル一巻き毎に0.5dB未満の最大曲げ損失をもたらすのに十分なボイド分布一様性を有していることを特徴とするシングルモードファイバ。
