Description

The present invention relates to a respiratory mask having a gripping mechanism positioned on a mask body. The gripping mechanism includes indicia that provides an indication of where the user should grip the mask body to wear, remove, or adjust.

Respiratory masks generally (1) prevent impurities or contaminants from entering the wearer's respiratory system, and (2) pathogens and other contaminants that have been exhaled by the wearer. It is intended to be worn over a person's breathing path for at least one of the two general purposes of protecting against exposure to a substance. In the first situation, the respirator is worn in an environment where air contains particles that are harmful to the wearer, such as an automobile body repair shop. In the second situation, the respiratory mask is worn in an environment where there is a risk of contamination to other people or other objects, such as an operating room or clean room.

Various breathing masks have been designed to meet either (or both) of these objectives. Some of these respirators have been classified as “filtered face wear” because the mask body itself functions as a filter mechanism. Respirators that use a rubber or elastomeric mask with an attachable filter cartridge (see, eg, US Reissue Pat. No. 39,493 (Yuschak et al.) And US Pat. No. 4,098,270 (Dolby)). Or an insert molded filter element (see, for example, U.S. Pat. No. 4,790,306 (Braun)), a filtering face-piece respirator requires the filter cartridge to be installed or replaced. The filter medium is designed so as to cover almost the entire mask body. Filtered face-piece respirators generally take one of two types of structures: a molded respirator and a flat fold respirator.

Molded filter face-piece respirators typically have included a nonwoven web of heat bonded fibers or a plastic mesh with an open stitch to provide a cup-like structure to the mask body. Molded respiratory masks tend to maintain the same shape both during use and during storage. Examples of patents disclosing molded filter face-mounted respirators include US Pat. Nos. 7,131,442 (Kronzer et al.), 6,923,182, and 6,041,782. (Angadjivand et al.), 4,850,347 (Skov), 4,807,619 (Dyrud et al.), 4,536,440 (Berg), and US Design No. 285,374 (Huber et al.).

A flat foldable respirator can be folded for shipping and storage, as its name implies, and can be opened into a cup-like structure for use. US Pat. Nos. 6,568,392 and 6,484,722 (Bostock et al.) And 6,394,090 (Chen) disclose examples of flat folding respirators. .

It is very important that the respirator wearer read and understand the instructions before wearing the respirator. For example, a user's inexperience with a flat foldable respirator can cause improper handling and mistakes in wearing and removing. Such misuse may result in an inappropriate and unpleasant fit, which may result in a lack of protection and may reduce user perception of the respiratory mask.

Some filter face-piece respirators have been provided with a gripping mechanism to assist the user in attaching and detaching. U.S. Pat. Nos. 6,948,499 and 6,945,249 (Griesbach, III et al.) Disclose examples of such filtered face-mounted respirators. Although this breathing mask has a gripping mechanism in the form of a “tab”, the gripping mechanism is of any type that intuitively informs the user where to hold the mask during wear, removal and adjustment operations. Does not include signs.

Thus, the gripping mechanism is often not readily apparent and, as a result, often not used by the wearer. However, as described below, the present invention provides the user with an easy-to-understand method for quickly identifying where to hold the mask for calibration purposes.

The present invention includes (a) a harness and (b) a mask body on which a gripping mechanism is positioned, wherein the gripping mechanism provides an indication of where the mask body should be gripped for adaptation. There is provided a new filter face-piece respirator comprising a mask body.

The inventors have discovered that the use of indicia on the gripping mechanism is beneficial in achieving and maintaining a close fit to the wearer's face. The gripping mechanism provides a solid surface on which the wearer's fingers can easily grip the mask body to properly position the mask body during wear and subsequent adjustment and removal. The indicia provides the wearer with an indication of where the gripping mechanism is located and how to grip the mechanism during these fitting operations, thus facilitating the wearer's training.

Images, rather than text, are becoming an increasingly common means of communicating information about the operation of various products to users. Many images have gained universal approval. The intent of the present invention in the present invention is to create in the user's mind an association of the correct location on the respiratory mask to hold the mask body when repositioning and removing. The indicia may take the form of a fingerprint pattern, for example. The fingerprint pattern can be incorporated into areas of the ultrasonically bonded material, as seen as a contrast, or image, between the welded and non-welded areas, and the mask thickness of these areas. It may be sensed at the wearer's fingertip by changing the height. However, the image can also be printed on the gripping mechanism to further increase the visual contrast with the rest of the mask. If the indicia is generally circular, the effect can be obtained by cutting a crescent shape or even a small diameter hole into the gripping mechanism, which hole or opening is for easy storage away from contaminated surfaces. It has an additional function that the mask can be hung on a nail or hook, or even an additional function as a dispensing method.

1 is a front perspective view of a filter-type face-mounted respiratory mask 10 according to the present invention when worn on a human face. The top view of the respiratory mask 10 shown in FIG. FIG. FIG. 4 is a cross-sectional view of the mask body 12 taken along line 4-4 of FIG. FIG. 5 is a cross-sectional view of the filtration structure 16 taken along line 5-5 of FIG.

When the present invention is put into practical use, a filter-type face-mounted respiratory mask having a gripping mechanism disposed on a mask body is provided. The filtration structure 16 removes contaminants from the surrounding environment so that the wearer can breathe clean air. The mask body 12 includes a top 18 and a bottom 20. The top 18 and the bottom 20 are separated by a boundary line 22. In this particular embodiment, the boundary line 22 is a pleat that extends transversely between both ends of the central portion of the mask body. The mask body 12 also includes a peripheral portion including an upper segment 24a and a lower segment 24b. The harness 14 has a strap 26 stapled to a tab 28a. As shown, the tab 28a is an integral part of the flange 30a.

FIG. 2 illustrates that the respiratory mask 10 may have first and second flanges 30 a and 30 b positioned on opposite sides of the mask body 12. The strap 26 is attached to each tab 28a, 28b using staples, for example. Flanges 30a and 30b project laterally and frontally from the mask body, thus providing a gripping mechanism for the user. Each flange protrudes laterally from the mask body in that it extends away from a plane P that bisects the mask body in the x direction. The flanges 30a and 30b also extend in the front direction from the mask body 12 in that they extend away from the peripheral portion 24a toward the front edge 22 of the mask body 12 in the direction indicated by the arrow y. Surface area, each flange occupies typically is about from 1 to 15 square centimeters (cm 2), more typically from about 2~12Cm 2, still more typically about 5 to 10 cm 2. Each flange also typically extends at least 2 millimeters (mm) away from the mask body, more typically at least 5 mm, and even more typically at least 1-2 centimeters (cm) away. The flanges 30a, 30b may be disposed integrally or non-integrally with the mask body and may include one or more or all various layers including the mask body. That is, the flange may be an extension of the material used to make the mask body, or it may be made of a separate material such as a rigid or semi-rigid plastic. The flanges 30a, 30b each have indicia 32a, 32b positioned on one or more sides of the flange. As shown, the indicia 32, 32 may be in the form of a fingerprint to inform the user where the user can hold the mask body between his / her fingers, eg, the thumb and forefinger. The indicia can take on other shapes and forms, for example, concentric circles, ellipses, or rectangles. Alternatively, the indicia can include a hole in the flange that allows the wearer to feel contact between the fingers that can be placed against.

フランジの剛性は、修正ASTM D790法「Flexural Properties of Unreinforced and Reinforced Plastics and Electrical Insulating Materials」、方法I「Three Point Bend Testing」を用いて測定してもよい。 FIG. 3 shows an example of a hole 33 that may be provided in the indicia 32b. This indicia is formed by a welding pattern, a printed image, one or more openings, a cut slit, a perforation, a sticky feeling, or a combination thereof. The indicia typically occupies a surface area of about 1 to 6 square centimeters (cm 2 ), more typically about 2 to 4 cm 2 . Another item, such as ink, may be added to the surface of the mask body to form an indicia, but the indicia is typically formed integrally and exclusively from the material of the mask body itself, for example, as a weld pattern. Is done. The indicia may be a prominent weld pattern on the opposing major surface of each flange, i.e., the weld extends through the thickness of the flange. Thus, the layers including the mask body may be welded together so that the weld pattern is noticeable from the top or bottom surface of the gripping mechanism. The integral flange may have an additional weld or bond 34 provided on the flange to increase the rigidity of the flange. Alternatively, an adhesive layer may be used between the layers to increase the flange stiffness. Using the flexural stiffness test described below, the flexural modulus of the flange may be at least 10 megapascals (MPa), more typically at least 20 MPa when bent along the major surface of the flange. . The flexural modulus at the upper end is typically less than 100 MPa, more typically less than 60 MPa. These numbers (ie, both at the upper and lower limits) are about twice as large as when the test was performed along the edge of the sample. Flange stiffness can be measured using the modified ASTM D790 method “Flexural Properties of Uninformed and Reinforced Plastics and Electrical Insulating Materials”, Method I “Three Point Bend Test”. The flexural modulus can be calculated in the linear region of the stress strain plot according to ASTM D790. Although tabs 28a and 28b are illustrated in FIG. 2 as having shared edges that become part of peripheral segment 24a, these tabs are shown in FIG. 1 with the mask on the wearer's face. When placed, it may extend beyond the periphery of the mask body periphery that contacts the face. The peripheral part in contact with the face usually exists inside the bracket-like region 35 and is therefore not part of the peripheral part of the tab. The periphery of the mask body may have a series of adhesive or welds 34 'for joining the various layers of the mask body 12 together. A fixing wire 36 may be further provided at a place where the flanges 30 a and 30 b are in contact with the filtration structure 16. The upper portion 18 may include at least one crease line 38 that extends from a first side of the mask body to a second side of the mask body. Examples of other gripping mechanisms other than integral flanges include the addition of other components attached to the mask body, such as flaps, loops, and posts, and plastic injection molded parts; plastic, metal, and / or Die-cut parts made of cellulosic materials; mechanical clip devices; adhesive-attached devices made of plastic, metal, and / or cellulosic materials; and mechanically like rivets that deform during the attachment process The attached device; US patent application Ser. No. 12 / 338,084, entitled “Flat Fold Respirator Having Flags Disposed On The Mask Body”, is a filtered face-mounted respirator suitable for use herein, using a flange as a gripping mechanism. An example of this is disclosed.

FIG. 4 shows an example of a pleated structure of the mask body 12 that can be used in connection with the present invention. As shown, the mask body 12 includes pleats 22 and 38 already mentioned with reference to FIGS. The top or panel 18 of the mask body 12 also includes pleats 40. The lower portion or panel 20 of the mask body 12 includes pleats 42, 44, 46, 48, 50 and 52. The lower portion 20 of the mask body 12 may include a larger filter medium surface area than the upper portion 18. The mask body 12 also includes a peripheral web 54 that is secured along the periphery of the mask body. The nose clip 56 may be located in the middle of the upper portion 18 of the mask body and adjacent to the periphery between the filtration structure 16 and the peripheral web 54. The nose clip 56 may be made of a flexible metal or plastic that can be manually adjusted by the wearer to match the contour of the wearer's nose. The peripheral web 54 may be folded over the mask body at the peripheral portions 24a and 24b. The peripheral web 54 may also be an extended portion of the inner cover web 58 that is folded and secured around the edges 24a and 24b. Alternatively, the peripheral web can be an extended portion of the outer cover web 60. As shown, the upper portion 18 looks like a pleated panel when the mask body 12 is folded, and similarly, the lower portion 20 (FIG. 1) is also pleated when the mask is folded. Looks like a panel. More or fewer pleats than shown may be used to provide a flat foldable filter face-piece respirator according to the present invention.

FIG. 5 illustrates that the filtration structure 16 can include one or more layers, such as an inner cover web 58, an outer cover web 60, and a filter layer 62. Inner and outer cover webs 58 and 60 may be provided to protect the filter layer 62 and prevent fibers from the filter layer 62 from loosening and entering the inside of the mask. During use of the respiratory mask, air sequentially passes through layers 60, 62, and 58 before entering the inside of the mask. The air placed in the internal gas space of the mask may then be aspirated by the wearer. As the wearer exhales, the air sequentially passes through layers 58, 62, and 60 in the opposite direction. Alternatively, an exhalation valve (not shown) is masked that allows exhaled air to be rapidly removed from the internal gas space and enter the external gas space to minimize the passage of air through the filtration structure 16. The main body may be provided. Typically, the cover webs 58 and 60 are made with a choice of non-woven materials that provide a pleasant sensation on the filtration structure, particularly on the side that contacts the wearer's face. Details of various filter layer and cover web constructions that can be used in the support structure of the present invention are described below. An elastomeric face seal can be secured to the periphery of the filtration structure 16 to improve fit and comfort to the wearer. Such a face seal material extends radially inward from the periphery when the respirator is worn, and can contact the wearer's face. Examples of face seal materials include US Pat. Nos. 6,568,392 (Bostock et al.), 5,617,849 (Springett et al.), And 4,600,002 (Maryanek et al.). al.), and Canadian Patent No. 1,296,487 (Yard). The filtering structure may also have a structural mesh or mesh juxtaposed against at least one or more layers 58, 60, or 62, typically against the outer surface of the outer cover web 60. The use of such a mesh is described in US patent application Ser. No. 12 / 338,091, entitled “Expandable Face Mask with Reinforcing Netting” filed on Dec. 18, 2008.

The filtration structure used in connection with the present invention may exhibit a variety of different shapes and structures. Usually, the shape and structure of the filtration structure corresponds to the general shape of the mask body. Although the filtration structure is illustrated in multiple layers including a filter layer and two cover webs, the filtration structure may consist of only a filter layer or a combination of filter layers. For example, the prefilter can be arranged on the upstream side, and the finer and selective filter layer can be arranged on the downstream side. In addition, a sorbent material such as activated carbon can be placed between the fibers and / or various layers that make up the filtration structure. In addition, a separate particle filter layer can be used with the sorption layer to provide filtering for both particles and vapor. The filtration structure may include one or more reinforcing layers that assist in providing a cup-like structure. The filtration structure may also have one or more horizontal and / or vertical boundaries that contribute to its structural integrity.

The filtration structure used in the mask body of the present invention may be a particle capture type or gas and vapor type filter. The filtration structure also provides a barrier layer that prevents liquid from moving from one side of the filter layer to the other, for example, to prevent liquid aerosol or liquid droplets (eg, blood) from penetrating the filter layer. It may be. Depending on the application, multiple layers of similar or different filter media can be used to construct the filtration structure of the present invention. Filters that can be used effectively in the layered mask body of the present invention generally have a low pressure drop (eg, about 195-295 Pascals at a surface speed of 13.8 centimeters per second) to minimize the mask wearer's respiratory effort. ). The filter layers can be more flexible and can have sufficient shear strength to generally maintain their structure in the anticipated use conditions. Examples of particle trapping filters include one or more webs of fine inorganic fibers (such as glass fibers) or polymer synthetic fibers. Synthetic fiber webs include electret charged polymer microfibers produced by processes such as the meltblown process. Polyolefin microfibers formed from charged polypropylene are particularly useful for particle capture applications. Another filter layer may include an adsorbent component for removing harmful or offensive gases in the breathing air. Adsorbents may include powders or granules constrained within the filter layer by adhesives, binders, or fibrous structures (US Pat. No. 6,334,671 (Springett et al.), And 3, 971,373 (Braun)). The adsorbent layer can be coated on a substrate such as a fibrous foam or a reticulated foam to form a thin and closely adhered layer. Examples of the adsorbent material include activated carbon (chemically treated or untreated), a porous alumina-silica catalyst base material, and alumina particles. An example of a sorbent filtration structure that can be adapted to various structures is described in US Pat. No. 6,391,429 (Senkus et al.).

Wente,Van A.の「Superfine Thermoplastic Fibers」(48 Indus.Engn. Davies,C.N.、「The Separation Of Airborne Dust Particles」、Institution Of Mechanical Engineers、ロンドン、会報1B、1952年に従って測定され得る。 The filter layer is typically selected to achieve the desired filtration effect. The filter layer typically removes particles and / or other contaminants at a high rate from the gas stream passing through the filter layer. For the fibrous filter layer, fibers selected based on the type of material to be filtered are usually selected so that they do not bond together during the molding operation. As previously mentioned, the filter layer can be provided in a variety of shapes and configurations, typically about 0.2 millimeters (mm) to 10 mm, more typically about 0.3 mm to 5 mm thick. And may be a substantially planar web or corrugated to provide an expanded surface area (eg, US Pat. Nos. 5,804,295 and 5,656). 368 (Braun et al.)). The filter layer may further include a plurality of filter layers joined by an adhesive or any other method. Basically, any suitable material known (or later developed) for forming the filter layer can be used as the filter material. Wente, Van A.M. Meltblown fiber webs, particularly those of the persistently electret type, especially as taught in “Superfine Thermoplastic Fibers” (48 Indus. Engn. Chem., 1342 et seq. (1956)), Useful (see, eg, US Pat. No. 4,215,682 (Kubik et al.)). These meltblown fibers may be microfibers having an effective fiber diameter of less than about 20 micrometers (μm) (“blown microfiber” is referred to as BMF) and generally about 1 to 12 μm. Effective fiber diameter is determined by Davies, C .; N. , “The Separation of Airline Dust Particles”, Institution of Mechanical Engineers, London, Bulletin 1B, 1952. Particularly preferred are BMF webs comprising fibers formed from polypropylene, poly (4-methyl-1-pentene) and combinations thereof. Charged fibrillated film fibers taught in US Pat. No. 31,285 (van Turnhout) may also be suitable, and rosin-wool fiber webs and glass fiber or solution blown webs, or electrostatic Spray fibers, particularly in the form of microfilms, may also be suitable. Charges are described in US Pat. Nos. 6,824,718 (Eitzman et al.), 6,783,574 (Angadjivand et al.), 6,743,464 (Insley et al.), 6,454,986 and 6,406,657 (Eitzman et al.), And 6,375,886 and 5,496,507 (Angadjivand et al.). As can be seen, it can be imparted to the fiber by contacting the fiber with water. The charge may also be due to corona charging as disclosed in US Pat. No. 4,588,537 (Klasse et al.) Or as disclosed in US Pat. No. 4,798,850 (Brown). It may be applied to the fiber by tribocharging. In addition, additives can be included in the fibers to enhance the filtration performance of webs produced by the hydrocharging process (see US Pat. No. 5,908,598 (Rousseau et al.)). In particular, the filtration performance in an oily mist environment can be improved by arranging fluorine atoms on the fiber surface of the filter layer (US Pat. Nos. 6,398,847 B1 and 6,397,458 B1). , And 6,409,806 B1 (Jones et al.)). The typical basis weight of the electret BMF filter layer is about 10-100 grams per square meter. For example, when charged by the technique described in the '507 patent (Angadjivand et al.) And also Jones et al. When including fluorine atoms as described in the patent, the basis weight respectively, is approximately 20 to 40 g / m 2 and about 10 to 30 g / m 2.

The inner cover web can be used to provide a smooth surface to contact the wearer's face, and the outer cover web encloses free fibers in the mask body or for aesthetic reasons Can be used. The cover web can function as a pre-filter when placed on the outside (or upstream) of the filter layer, but typically provides some substantial filter effect to the filtration structure is not. In order to obtain moderate comfort, the inner cover web has a relatively low basis weight and is formed of relatively fine fibers. More specifically, the cover web may be made to have a basis weight of about 5-50 g / m 2 (typically 10-30 g / m 2 ), and the average fiber diameter of the fibers used is many , About 5 to 24 micrometers, typically about 7 to 18 micrometers, more typically about 8 to 12 micrometers. Suitable materials for the cover web include blown microfiber (BMF) materials, particularly polyolefin BMF materials such as polypropylene BMF materials (including polypropylene blends and blends of polypropylene and polyethylene) and spunbond fibers. The cover web used in the present invention preferably has very little fiber protrusion from the web surface after processing and thus has a smooth outer surface. Examples of cover webs that may be used in the present invention include, for example, U.S. Patent Nos. 6,041,782 (Angadjivand), 6,123,077 (Bostock et al.), And WO 96 / 28216A. (Bostock et al.).

The straps used in the harness are made from a variety of materials, such as thermoset rubber, thermoplastic elastomers, braided or knitted yarn / rubber combinations, inelastic braided components, and others. obtain. The strap may be formed from an elastic material, such as an elastic braided material. The strap is preferably expanded more than twice its full length and can return to its relaxed state. The strap can also extend up to three or four times its relaxed length and can return to its original state without any damage when tension is removed. Therefore, the elastic limit is preferably at least twice, three times, or four times the length of the strap in the relaxed state. Typically, the strap is about 20-30 cm long, 3-10 mm wide, and about 0.9-1.5 mm thick. The strap may extend as a continuous strap from the first tab to the second tab, or the strap may have multiple parts that can be joined together by additional fasteners or buckles. For example, the strap may have first and second parts joined together by fasteners that can be quickly separated by the wearer when removing the mask body from the face. Examples of straps that can be used in connection with the present invention are shown in US Pat. No. 6,332,465 (Xue et al.). Examples of fastening or clasp mechanisms that can be used to join one or more portions of the strap together are described, for example, in the following US Pat. No. 6,062,221 (Brostrom et al.), 5th. 237,986 (Seppala), and European Patent 1,495,785A1 (Chien).

An exhalation valve may be further attached to the mask body in order to facilitate exhalation from the internal gas space. The use of an exhalation valve can improve the comfort of the wearer by rapidly removing warm moist exhalation from within the mask. For example, U.S. Pat. Nos. 7,188,622, 7,028,689, and 7,013,895 (Martin et al.), 7,428,903, 311,104, 7,117,868, 6,854,463, 6,843,248, and 5,325,892 (Japantich et al.), Ibid. See 6,883,518 (Mittelstadt et al.) And Re-Patent No. 37,974 (Bowers). Essentially, any expiratory valve that provides a suitable pressure drop and can be suitably secured to the mask body to rapidly convey exhaled air from the internal gas space to the external gas space is relevant to the present invention. May be used.

The nose clip used in connection with the present invention may be essentially any additional component that helps to improve the fit of the wearer's nose. Because there is a substantial change in the contour of the wearer's face in this area, the nose clip can be a good aid for the mask body to achieve a proper fit in this area. For example, a nose clip is a flexible, soft band-like metal, such as aluminum, that can be shaped so that the mask body is held in the desired conformal relationship over the wearer's nose and between the nose and cheeks May be included. An example of a suitable nose clip is shown in US Pat. No. 5,558,089 and Design Patent No. 412,573 (Castiglion). Other nose clips are disclosed in U.S. Patent Application No. 12 / 238,737 (filed September 26, 2008), Publication No. 2007-0044803A1 (filed Aug. 25, 2005), and 2007-0068529A1. (Filed on Sep. 27, 2005).

Although the invention has been described with reference to particular flat foldable masks, the invention is described, for example, in US Pat. Nos. 7,069,930 (Bostock et al.) And 6,394,090 ( May be used with flat foldable masks having other structures, such as those shown in Chen, or may be used with molded masks (eg, US Pat. No. 7,131,442 (Kronzer et al.), 6,923,182 (Angadjivand et al.) and 6,827,764 (Springett et al.)). The present invention may also be used in connection with the above-described molded mask.

The respiratory mask filtration structure was formed from three layers of nonwoven material and other respiratory mask components. The mask was assembled in two main steps: a preform manufacturing process and a mask finishing process. The stage of preform production included a nonwoven fiber web lamination and fixing process, a pleated crease line forming process, and a nose clip attaching process. The mask finishing process includes the steps of folding the pleats along the embossed crease line, the step of fusing the mask side edge with the indicium claimed in the present invention, the step of cutting out the tab into the final form, and the head The process of attaching the band was included.

The body of the respirator was formed of three layers of nonwoven material: an outer cover web (205 mm x 300 mm), a filter material (205 mm x 300 mm), and an inner cover web (238 mm x 300 mm). The outer and inner cover webs were 34 grams per square meter (gsm) polypropylene spunbond nonwoven. The filter material used in the mask body was an electret-charged blown microfiber polypropylene web with a basis weight of 59 gms, a hardness of 6%, and an effective fiber size of 7.5 micrometers.

Each of the layers was overlaid to create a respiratory mask body, which was then ultrasonically welded together using a point bonding pattern. For ultrasonic welding, a 2000 type ultrasonic welding apparatus obtained from Branson, Danbury, Connecticut was used, and the ram pressure 483 with a horn amplitude, frequency, and pressurization holding time of 100%, 20 kHz, and 0.6 seconds, respectively. Achieved by operating in kilopascals (kPa). Operating on anvils with flat-vertex pegs, these pegs have individual face areas of 1.6 square millimeters and are arranged in a grid with a spacing of about 1 centimeter between the peg centers. The flat face horn of the device was operated at a contact pressure of about 6 MPa against this anvil. The nonwoven layer was fixed and the crease lines defining the pleat positions were embossed into the fixed nonwoven layer. The embossing of the crease line was performed using a die cutting machine, Hytronic Cutting Machine Model B, available from USM Corporation, Haverhill, Massachusetts, with a crease rule die with a force of 149000 N (15 tons). The die had 9 bars with rounded edges at the edges that crossed the entire length of the preform, and when pressed into the preform, it created a line in the nonwoven layer. These embossed lines compressed the webs at the point of contact with each other but did not penetrate or significantly fuse the material.

As the final step of the preform manufacturing operation, the extended edge of the inner cover web was wrapped around the edge of the preform and ultrasonically welded in place. Ultrasonic welding uses an ultrasonic welding apparatus 2000X type obtained from Branson, Danbury, Connecticut, and ram pressure, 448 kPa with horn amplitude, frequency, and pressurization holding time of 100%, 20 kHz, and 0.5 seconds, respectively. It was operated by. The anvil having a contact area of 4.1 square centimeters was operated using specific ram pressure and horn conditions, resulting in bonding of the preform material with a contact pressure of 8.5 MPa. The area of the anvil used to join the peripheral edges of the preform was composed of flat apex pegs arranged in the pattern 34 'of FIG. 2 with individual face areas of 1.6 square millimeters. The flat face horn of the welder was actuated against the anvil to secure the peripheral web to the preform. Using this process, a nose clip was attached to the top of the preform and encapsulated between the outer cover web and the folded edge of the inner cover web. The nose clip was a malleable, plastically deformable aluminum strip of the shape shown in FIG. 2 and was 9 cm long, 0.5 cm wide and 1 mm thick.

In the mask finishing process, the pleats were folded along the crease line as shown in FIG. The pleats located above the center fold of the mask were folded so that the outside of the fold faced downward when the mask was opened, which helps to prevent debris from accumulating when wearing the mask. Went to. Reinforced flanges (32a in FIG. 2) for proper pleating of the preform and folding around the central fold, fusing the side edges of the mask (28a and 28b in FIG. 2) and including gripping indicia And 32b), the preform was ultrasonically welded. The ultrasonic welding uses an ultrasonic welding apparatus 2000x type obtained from Branson, Danbury, Connecticut, and the ram amplitude, frequency, and pressure holding time are 100%, 20 kHz, and 0.8 seconds, respectively, and the ram pressure is 483 kPa. It was operated by. The contact area of the anvil for joining the flange material is made up of flat apex-type pegs that have individual face areas of 1.04 square millimeters and 2.88 millimeters from their flat sides. And included the indicium shapes claimed in the present invention. The resulting binding pattern is shown as 30a in FIG. The anvil bar forming the bond at the side edges of the mask is 95.25 millimeters long and 9.525 millimeters wide, and the resulting bond pattern is shown at 36 in FIG. The welder flat face horn was actuated against the anvil to form the resulting indicia weld pattern (shown in FIGS. 2 and 3), creating a bonded layer of the flange. The anvil's angled bar element sealed the side edges of the mask and the pin welded surface fused the flange material to harden it. As the final step of the mask finishing operation, the reinforcing flange was cut into a desired shape, and the headband was stapled to the tab. The flange had a width of 1.0 cm and a length of 5.0 cm, and had a head portion with a radius of 0.5 cm positioned at a tab portion to which the headband was attached. The headband is a hand-held staple P6C-8 model available from Stanley Boost, East Greenwich, Rhode Island, and a galvanized staple needle No. STH5019 0.635 cm (1/4 inch) was used to attach to the head section with tab radius. A section of the flange was cut out from the mask and tested according to the method outlined in the flexural rigidity test. The flange section test was conducted in two orientations: a direction along the flat surface of the sample and a direction along the edge of the sample that was oriented along the entire length of the flange. When bent along the flat surface of the sample, the flexural modulus was 27 MPa. When bent along the edge of the sample, the flexural modulus was 66 MPa. The headband has a width of 7.9 mm and a thickness of 0.8 mm and is provided by Providence Braid Co. Sample No. 125-1, obtained from Pawucket, Rhode Island. The flange is rotatable about an axis parallel to the attachment line to the mask body, providing a stronger mask body when worn open. The indicia provided on the flange can be easily seen as an indication of where to hold the mask body.
