Description

The present invention relates to a liquid crystal display element using a ferroelectric liquid crystal and having columnar spacers and a method for manufacturing the same.

Liquid crystal display elements have been widely used from large displays to portable information terminals because of their thinness and low power consumption, and their development is actively underway. So far, liquid crystal display elements have been developed and put to practical use, such as TN mode, STN multiplex drive, and active matrix drive using thin layer transistors (TFTs) for TN, but these use nematic liquid crystals. In addition, the response speed of the liquid crystal material is as slow as several ms to several tens of ms, and it cannot be said that it is sufficiently compatible with moving image display.

On the other hand, the ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) is a liquid crystal suitable for a high-speed device because its response speed is extremely short on the order of μs, and has attracted attention in recent years.
On the other hand, ferroelectric liquid crystals have a practical difficulty that alignment is difficult due to higher molecular order than other liquid crystals typified by nematic liquid crystals, and alignment defects are likely to occur.

As a general liquid crystal display element, for example, an element in which a gap (cell gap) between a pair of substrates, that is, a thickness of a liquid crystal layer is defined by a plurality of columnar spacers arranged on one substrate is known. Usually, the columnar spacers are regularly arranged at a predetermined pitch.

However, as described above, ferroelectric liquid crystals are difficult to align due to high molecular order, and alignment disorder is likely to occur in the vicinity of the columnar spacers, so the columnar spacers are regularly arranged at a predetermined pitch. Then, there is a problem that the alignment is disturbed by the columnar spacers and stripe-shaped display unevenness is visually recognized.
In general, ferroelectric liquid crystal exhibits a tilted smectic phase and forms a layer structure. When liquid crystal molecules form a layer structure, alignment disorder (alignment) is caused by a structure (unevenness) called a columnar spacer. It can be considered that the alignment disorder occurs along the straight line on which the columnar spacers are arranged, and stripe-shaped display unevenness is visually recognized.

Regarding the arrangement of the columnar spacers, a ferroelectric liquid crystal is not used but a nematic liquid crystal is used. However, in order to make the partial display unevenness generated in the vicinity of the columnar spacer inconspicuous, a plurality of columnar spacers are randomly arranged. Has been proposed (see, for example, Patent Document 1). In the case of this nematic liquid crystal, it is considered that the alignment in the azimuth direction is disturbed due to the presence of the structure (unevenness) called the columnar spacer, thereby causing an alignment defect only in the vicinity of the columnar spacer.
Therefore, it can be said that the alignment disorder of the ferroelectric liquid crystal caused by the columnar spacers is different from the alignment defect of the nematic liquid crystal. As described above, ferroelectric liquid crystals have a specific problem that alignment is difficult due to higher molecular ordering than nematic liquid crystals, etc., and the above-mentioned patent document has problems when using ferroelectric liquid crystals. Is not a solution.

The present invention has been made in view of the above circumstances, and provides a liquid crystal display element having columnar spacers and using a ferroelectric liquid crystal, in which alignment disorder is less likely to occur, and a method for manufacturing the same. Main purpose.

In general, a ferroelectric liquid crystal exhibits a tilted smectic phase, forms a layer structure, and has high order of liquid crystal molecules. For this reason, for example, when the order of liquid crystal molecules and the layer structure have some relationship with the regularity of the arrangement of the columnar spacers, it is thought that alignment disorder is likely to occur on the straight line on which the columnar spacers are arranged. The Therefore, the present inventors have arrived at the present invention by paying attention to the relationship between the occurrence of disorder in the alignment of the ferroelectric liquid crystal and the plurality of columnar spacers arranged on a straight line.

In order to achieve the above object, the present invention provides a first base material, a first electrode layer and a plurality of columnar spacers formed on the first base material, and the first electrode layer and the columnar spacers. A spacer-side substrate having the formed first alignment film, a second base, a second electrode layer formed on the second base, and a second formed on the second electrode layer A counter substrate having an alignment film is disposed so that the first alignment film and the second alignment film face each other, and a liquid crystal layer containing a ferroelectric liquid crystal is sandwiched between the spacer side substrate and the counter substrate. A liquid crystal display element having a width of 1 mm or more extending in the alignment processing direction of the first alignment film, and a straight line drawn by connecting any of the columnar spacers in the portion. The regular part where three or more parallel straight lines exist close together To provide a liquid crystal display element characterized by the absence within.

According to the present invention, since the regular portion where the plurality of columnar spacers are arranged with the predetermined regularity does not exist in the display region, it is possible to improve the alignment disorder caused by the columnar spacers.

In the said invention, it is preferable that the said parallel straight line has an angle in the range of 30 degrees-60 degrees with respect to the alignment process direction of the said 1st alignment film. In general, a ferroelectric liquid crystal exhibits a tilted smectic phase and forms a layer structure, and the alignment (alignment) of parallel straight lines at a regular site in the inclination (angle) with respect to the alignment processing direction of the layer normal. When the angles with respect to the directions are substantially the same, it is considered that the alignment disorder is likely to occur along the straight line on which the columnar spacers are arranged. Therefore, it is preferable that the regular part as described above does not exist in the display area.

Moreover, in this invention, it is preferable that the distance between the said adjacent straight lines is 1 mm or less among the said parallel straight lines. It is believed that the shorter the distance between adjacent straight lines, the easier it is for alignment disorder to occur along the straight line on which the columnar spacers are arranged. Therefore, it is preferable that the regular part as described above does not exist in the display area.

Furthermore, the present invention provides a first substrate, a first electrode layer and a plurality of columnar spacers formed on the first substrate, and a first alignment film formed on the first electrode layer and the columnar spacers A spacer-side substrate preparation step for preparing a spacer-side substrate, a second base material, a second electrode layer formed on the second base material, and a second base layer formed on the second electrode layer. A counter substrate preparing step of preparing a counter substrate having an alignment film; a liquid crystal dropping step of dropping a ferroelectric liquid crystal on the first alignment film of the spacer side substrate; and a spacer in which the ferroelectric liquid crystal is dropped. A method for manufacturing a liquid crystal display element, comprising: a substrate bonding step of bonding a side substrate and the counter substrate in a reduced-pressure atmosphere; and a liquid crystal alignment step of aligning the ferroelectric liquid crystal, wherein the spacer-side substrate preparation step In the first alignment film, This is a part extending in the direction of treatment and having a width of 1 mm or more. When a straight line is drawn by connecting any of the columnar spacers, three or more parallel straight lines exist in this part. There is provided a method for manufacturing a liquid crystal display element, wherein the columnar spacers are formed so that regular portions do not exist in a display region.

According to the present invention, the columnar spacer is formed so that the regular region where the plurality of columnar spacers are arranged with the predetermined regularity does not exist in the display region, so that the alignment disorder caused by the columnar spacer is improved. be able to.

In the above invention, when the ferroelectric liquid crystal is dropped linearly at equal intervals in the liquid crystal dropping step, the width of the regular portion drops the ferroelectric liquid crystal linearly. It is preferable that the width is equal. When the width of the regular part is equal to the width of the liquid crystal in which the ferroelectric liquid crystal is linearly dropped, the alignment of the ferroelectric liquid crystal is likely to be impaired at the part where the dropped ferroelectric liquid crystal contacts. I think. For this reason, it is preferable that there is no regular portion in the display area having an equal interval for dropping the ferroelectric liquid crystal linearly.

In the present invention, it is preferable that the ferroelectric liquid crystal is dropped by an ink jet method in the liquid crystal dropping step. This is because the use of the inkjet method makes it possible to enclose the ferroelectric liquid crystal between the spacer side substrate and the counter substrate in a favorable alignment state.

According to the present invention, there is no regular site where a plurality of columnar spacers are arranged with a predetermined regularity in the display region, so that the disorder of alignment caused by the columnar spacers can be improved.

Hereinafter, the liquid crystal display element of the present invention and the manufacturing method thereof will be described in detail.

A ferroelectric liquid crystal is sandwiched between the alignment film 15 and the liquid crystal layer 10 is formed.

In addition, as illustrated in FIG. 2, the columnar spacers 4 are randomly arranged. Specifically, the columnar spacers 4 extend in the alignment processing direction s of the first alignment film, and are portions r having a width w of 1 mm or more. In this region r, when a straight line is drawn by connecting an arbitrary columnar spacer 4, the regular region where three or more parallel straight lines are close to each other is arranged so as not to exist in the display area. Yes. In FIG. 2, a portion r extending in the alignment processing direction s of the first alignment film and having a width w of 1 mm is indicated by a broken line for explanation.

The regular portion is a portion having a width of 1 mm or more extending in the alignment treatment direction of the first alignment film, and this width is the alignment treatment of the first alignment film as illustrated in FIGS. 2 and 3. The length (width w) extending perpendicular to the direction s.
In addition, drawing a straight line by connecting arbitrary columnar spacers means connecting a straight line from the center point of the cross section of one columnar spacer to the center point of the cross section of another columnar spacer. When drawing a straight line by connecting arbitrary columnar spacers, if a straight line is drawn by connecting any two columnar spacers, if there are other columnar spacers on the line, three or more columnar spacers You may draw a straight line by connecting That is, a straight line connecting arbitrary columnar spacers includes not only a straight line connecting two columnar spacers but also a straight line connecting three or more columnar spacers.
Furthermore, it is a site having a width of 1 mm or more extending in the alignment processing direction of the first alignment film. When a straight line is drawn by connecting an arbitrary columnar spacer in this site, three or more parallel straight lines are drawn. The regular site | part which exists adjacently means the site | part R which is illustrated in FIG. It is assumed that columnar spacers 104 that form a straight line exist in this regular portion (R). In FIG. 3, the width w is set to 2 mm for explanation.
The display area is an area where an image is displayed.

According to the present invention, since the above-mentioned parallel straight lines do not exist close to each other in the display area, it is considered that the alignment disorder caused by the columnar spacer can be improved. Therefore, even when a ferroelectric liquid crystal is used, a liquid crystal display element having excellent display quality can be obtained.

Hereinafter, each structure in the liquid crystal display element of this invention is demonstrated.

1. Spacer side substrate The spacer side substrate in the present invention is formed on the first base material, the first electrode layer and the plurality of columnar spacers formed on the first base material, and the first electrode layer and the columnar spacers. And a first alignment film formed.
Hereinafter, each configuration of the spacer side substrate will be described.

(1) Columnar spacer The liquid crystal display element of the present invention has a plurality of columnar spacers, and the plurality of columnar spacers are portions extending in the alignment treatment direction of the first alignment film and having a width of 1 mm or more. In this part, when a straight line is drawn by connecting arbitrary columnar spacers, a regular part having three or more parallel straight lines close to each other is arranged so as not to exist in the display area.

The width w defining the regular part is 1 mm or more, and preferably in the range of 1 mm to 5 mm.

In addition, the number of parallel straight lines at the regular site may be three or more. As the number of parallel straight lines increases, the columnar spacers are regularly arranged. Therefore, alignment disorder is likely to occur along the straight line on which the columnar spacers are arranged.

Furthermore, it is preferable that the parallel straight lines at the regular sites have an angle within a range of 30 ° to 60 ° with respect to the alignment treatment direction of the first alignment film. In general, a ferroelectric liquid crystal exhibits a tilted smectic phase and forms a layer structure. As illustrated in the upper part of FIG. 4, among the ferroelectric liquid crystals that do not have a smectic A (SmA) phase in the phase series, the layer normal is relative to the alignment treatment direction (rubbing direction in FIG. 4). Tilted. When the inclination (angle) of the layer normal to the alignment treatment direction is substantially equal to the angle of the parallel straight line at the regular part, the alignment disorder occurs along the straight line on which the columnar spacers are arranged. It becomes easy.
Note that the angle of the parallel straight lines with respect to the alignment treatment direction of the first alignment film means a straight angle t with respect to the alignment treatment direction s of the first alignment film, as illustrated in FIG.

Moreover, it is preferable that the distance between adjacent straight lines is 1 mm or less among the parallel straight lines in the regular part. As the distance between the adjacent straight lines is shorter, the alignment disorder is more likely to occur along the straight line on which the columnar spacers are arranged.
In addition, the distance between adjacent straight lines means the shortest distance d between adjacent straight lines as illustrated in FIG.

In the present invention, such a regular portion does not exist in the display area. In addition, it can confirm that a regular site | part does not exist in a display area by peeling a counter substrate from a liquid crystal display element, and observing a spacer side board | substrate using a microscope.

In order to prevent the regular portion from being present in the display region, the arrangement of the columnar spacers may be determined in advance.

The columnar spacer is usually arranged in the non-pixel region. This is because even when alignment failure occurs near the columnar spacer, the influence on image display can be minimized.
Note that a non-pixel region is a region where wiring such as a gate line, a source line, a capacitor line, or a TFT element is formed and does not substantially contribute to display.

The shape of the columnar spacer is not particularly limited as long as it is the shape of a columnar spacer of a general liquid crystal display element, and examples thereof include a columnar shape and a prismatic shape.

The size of the columnar spacer is not particularly limited as long as the columnar spacer can be formed in the non-pixel region. For example, when the columnar spacer is cylindrical, the diameter of the cross section is about 5 μm to 20 μm. In addition, for example, when the columnar spacer has a prismatic shape, it is preferable that one piece of the cross section is about 5 μm to 20 μm. This is because if the diameter or one side of the cross section is too small, it may be difficult to form the columnar spacer, it may be difficult to maintain the cell gap, or the impact resistance may be reduced. In addition, if the diameter or one side of the cross section is too large, it is difficult to form a columnar spacer in the non-pixel region.
The diameter or one side of the cross section of the columnar spacer can be measured by observing the cross section of the columnar spacer using a scanning electron microscope (SEM).

In addition, the height of the columnar spacer is usually approximately the same as the cell gap.
In addition, the height of the columnar spacer can be measured by a stylus type roughness meter Dicktack (manufactured by Vesco) or the like.

The number of columnar spacers is not particularly limited as long as the cell gap can be maintained, and is appropriately selected depending on the size of the liquid crystal display element. Specifically, it can be in the range of 1 piece / mm 2 to 10 pieces / mm 2 .

As a material for forming the columnar spacer, a material generally used for a columnar spacer of a liquid crystal display element can be used. Specifically, examples of the material for forming the columnar spacer include resins, and among them, a photosensitive resin is preferably used. This is because the photosensitive resin is easy to pattern.

Further, the columnar spacers only have to be formed on the first base material, and the columnar spacers 4 may be formed on the first electrode layer 3 as illustrated in FIG. As illustrated, the columnar spacer 4 may be formed on the first substrate 2. Further, when the columnar spacer is formed on the first base material, the columnar spacer 4 and the base portion 4 ′ of the columnar spacer may be integrally formed as illustrated in FIG.

(2) First Alignment Film The first alignment film in the present invention is formed on the first electrode layer and the columnar spacer.

The first alignment film is not particularly limited as long as the ferroelectric liquid crystal can be aligned. As illustrated in FIG. 1, the first alignment film 5 is a single-layer alignment film. Also, as illustrated in FIG. 6, the first alignment film 5 is formed on the reactive liquid crystal alignment film 5a and the reactive liquid crystal alignment film 5a, and the reactive liquid crystal is fixed. The laminated liquid crystal layer 5b may be used. Hereinafter, these two aspects will be described separately.

(i)第1態様
(I) 1st aspect The 1st alignment film of this aspect is a single layer alignment film. The alignment film is not particularly limited as long as the ferroelectric liquid crystal can be aligned, but a rubbing film or a photo alignment film is preferably used.
In general, a ferroelectric liquid crystal having a phase sequence passing through a smectic A (SmA) phase as illustrated in the lower part of FIG. 4 is used to compensate for the volume change by reducing the layer spacing of the smectic layer during the phase change process. The smectic layer has a bent chevron structure, and domains with different major axis directions of the liquid crystal molecules are formed depending on the bending direction, and alignment defects called zigzag defects and hairpin defects are likely to occur at the interface. In order to prevent the occurrence of zigzag defects and hairpin defects, it is effective to increase the pretilt angle. Generally, the rubbing film can realize a higher pretilt angle than the photo-alignment film. Therefore, the use of the rubbing film can suppress the generation of zigzag defects and hairpin defects.
In addition, the photo-alignment film is a photo-alignment process, and the photo-alignment process is a non-contact alignment process, which is useful in that it does not generate static electricity or dust and can quantitatively control the alignment process. .
Hereinafter, the photo-alignment film and the rubbing film will be described.

(A) Photo-alignment film A photo-alignment film is a film obtained by irradiating a substrate coated with a photo-alignment material, which will be described later, with light whose polarization is controlled to cause a photoexcitation reaction (decomposition, isomerization, dimerization). The liquid crystal molecules on the film are aligned by imparting anisotropy to the film.

The photo-alignment material used in the present invention is not particularly limited as long as it has an effect of aligning ferroelectric liquid crystal (photoalignment) by irradiating light and causing a photoexcitation reaction. Absent. Such materials are largely photoreactive materials that impart anisotropy to the photoalignment film by causing photoreactions, and light that imparts anisotropy to the photoalignment film by causing photoisomerization reactions. It can be divided into isomerized materials.

In addition, regarding other points of the photoreactive material, the photoisomerizable material, and the photo-alignment film, JP 2006-350322 A, JP 2006-323214 A, JP 2005-258429 A, JP This is the same as that described in JP-A-2005-258428.

(B) Rubbing film A rubbing film is a film in which a substrate coated with a material to be described later is subjected to a rubbing treatment, and anisotropy is imparted to the obtained film to align liquid crystal molecules on the film.

The material used for the rubbing film is not particularly limited as long as anisotropy can be imparted by rubbing treatment. For example, polyimide, polyamide, polyamideimide, polyetherimide, polyvinyl alcohol, polyurethane, etc. Can be mentioned. These may be used alone or in combination of two or more.

Further, the thickness of the rubbing film is set to about 1 nm to 1000 nm, and preferably in the range of 50 nm to 100 nm.

(Ii) Second Aspect The first alignment film of this aspect is a laminate of a reactive liquid crystal alignment film and an immobilized liquid crystal layer formed on the reactive liquid crystal alignment film and immobilizing the reactive liquid crystal. It has been done. When forming the fixed liquid crystal layer on the alignment film for reactive liquid crystal, the reactive liquid crystal is aligned by the alignment film for reactive liquid crystal, and the reactive liquid crystal is polymerized by irradiating ultraviolet rays, for example. The orientation state can be fixed. Therefore, the alignment regulating force of the alignment film for reactive liquid crystal can be imparted to the fixed liquid crystal layer, and the fixed liquid crystal layer can act as an alignment film for aligning the ferroelectric liquid crystal. Further, since the reactive liquid crystal is fixed, it has an advantage that it is not affected by temperature or the like. In addition, reactive liquid crystals are relatively similar in structure to ferroelectric liquid crystals, and interact more strongly with ferroelectric liquid crystals, so that ferroelectrics are more effective than using single-layer alignment films. The orientation of the crystalline liquid crystal can be controlled.

In addition, about the alignment film for reactive liquid crystals, since it is the same as that of the alignment film as described in the said 1st aspect, description here is abbreviate | omitted.
The other points of the reactive liquid crystal and the fixed liquid crystal layer are described in JP-A-2006-350322, JP-A-2006-323214, JP-A-2005-258429, JP-A-2005-258428, and the like. This is the same as the reactive liquid crystal and the reactive liquid crystal layer described.

(3) 1st electrode layer The 1st electrode layer in this invention is formed on a 1st base material.
The first electrode layer used in the present invention is not particularly limited as long as it is generally used as an electrode of a liquid crystal display element, but the first electrode layer of the spacer-side substrate and the second electrode of the counter substrate. It is preferable that at least one of the layers is formed of a transparent conductor. Preferred examples of the transparent conductor material include indium oxide, tin oxide, indium tin oxide (ITO), and the like.

When the liquid crystal display element obtained by the present invention is driven by an active matrix system using TFTs, one of the spacer side substrate and the counter substrate is provided with the entire surface common electrode formed of the transparent conductor, and the other side. In this case, gate lines and source lines are arranged in a matrix, and a TFT element and a pixel electrode are provided in a portion surrounded by the gate lines and the source lines.

Examples of the method for forming the first electrode layer include chemical vapor deposition (CVD), physical vapor deposition (PVD) such as sputtering, ion plating, and vacuum deposition.

(4) 1st base material The 1st base material used for this invention will not be specifically limited if generally used as a base material of a liquid crystal display element, For example, a glass plate, a plastic plate, etc. are preferable. Can be mentioned.

(5) Other configurations In the present invention, a colored layer may be formed on the first substrate. When the colored layer is formed on the second base material, the spacer side substrate does not have the colored layer. That is, the spacer side substrate may have a colored layer, and the counter substrate may have a colored layer.
When the colored layer is formed, a color filter type liquid crystal display element capable of realizing color display by the colored layer can be obtained.

As a method for forming the colored layer, a method for forming a colored layer in a general color filter can be used. For example, a pigment dispersion method (color resist method, etching method), a printing method, an inkjet method, or the like can be used. it can.

2. Ferroelectric liquid crystal In the present invention, a ferroelectric liquid crystal is sandwiched between the first alignment film of the spacer-side substrate and the second alignment film of the counter substrate to constitute a liquid crystal layer.

The ferroelectric liquid crystal used in the present invention is not particularly limited as long as it exhibits a chiral smectic C phase (SmC * ). For example, the phase sequence changes in phase with the nematic phase (N) -cholesteric phase (Ch) -chiral smectic C phase (SmC * ) in the temperature lowering process, the nematic phase (N) -chiral smectic C phase (SmC * ) , Nematic phase (N) -smectic A phase (SmA) -chiral smectic C phase (SmC * ), phase change, nematic phase (N) -cholesteric phase (Ch) -smectic A phase (SmA ) -Chiral smectic C phase (SmC * ) and the like.

When the liquid crystal display element of the present invention is driven by a field sequential color system, it is preferable to use a liquid crystal material exhibiting monostability. By using a liquid crystal material exhibiting monostability, it becomes possible to drive by an active matrix method using thin film transistors (TFTs), and to control gradation by voltage modulation, so that high-definition and high-quality display can be achieved. This is because it can be realized.

In the ferroelectric liquid crystal, as illustrated in FIG. 7, the liquid crystal molecules 30 are tilted from the layer normal z and rotate along a cone ridge having a bottom surface perpendicular to the layer normal z. In such a cone, the tilt angle of the liquid crystal molecules 30 with respect to the layer normal z is referred to as a tilt angle θ.

“Showing monostability” means a state in which the state of the ferroelectric liquid crystal when no voltage is applied is stabilized in one state. More specifically, as shown in FIG. 7, the liquid crystal molecules 30 can operate on a cone between two states inclined by a tilt angle ± θ with respect to the layer normal z, but the liquid crystal molecules can be operated when no voltage is applied. The state 30 is stabilized in any one state on the cone.

Among liquid crystal materials exhibiting monostability, for example, as shown in the lower left of FIG. 8, liquid crystal molecules operate only when a positive or negative voltage is applied, and half-V shaped switching (hereinafter referred to as half-V shaped switching). That exhibit properties are particularly preferred. Using a ferroelectric liquid crystal exhibiting such a half V-shaped switching characteristic, it is possible to take a sufficiently long opening time as a black and white shutter, thereby making it possible to display each color that is temporally switched brighter. This is because a bright color display liquid crystal display element can be realized.
The “half V-shaped switching characteristic” refers to an electro-optical characteristic in which the light transmittance with respect to an applied voltage is asymmetric.

Such a ferroelectric liquid crystal can be variously selected from generally known liquid crystal materials according to required characteristics.

In particular, a liquid crystal material that exhibits an SmC * phase from the Ch phase without passing through the SmA phase is suitable as a material that exhibits a half V-shaped switching characteristic. Specifically, “R2301” manufactured by AZ Electronic Materials may be mentioned.

In addition, as the liquid crystal material that passes through the SmA phase, a material that expresses the SmC * phase from the Ch phase through the SmA phase is preferable because of a wide range of material selection. In this case, a single liquid crystal material exhibiting an SmC * phase can be used, but a non-chiral liquid crystal (hereinafter sometimes referred to as a host liquid crystal) having a low viscosity and easily exhibiting an SmC phase is used. By adding a small amount of an optically active substance that does not show large spontaneous polarization and an appropriate helical pitch, the liquid crystal material showing the phase sequence as described above has low viscosity and can realize faster response. preferable.

The host liquid crystal and the optically active substance added to the host liquid crystal are described in JP 2006-350322 A, JP 2006-323214 A, JP 2005-258429 A, JP 2005-258428 A, and the like. Is the same as

Specific examples of the ferroelectric liquid crystal passing through the SmA phase include “FELIXM4851-100” manufactured by AZ Electronic Materials.

In addition to the ferroelectric liquid crystal, the liquid crystal layer may contain a compound having any function depending on the function required for the liquid crystal display element. Examples of the compound include a polymerized polymerizable monomer. By containing such a polymerizable monomer polymer in the liquid crystal layer, the alignment of the liquid crystal material is so-called “polymer stabilization”, and a liquid crystal display device excellent in alignment stability can be obtained.

The polymerized monomer is the same as that described in JP-A-2006-323217.

The thickness of the liquid crystal layer is preferably in the range of 1.2 μm to 3.0 μm, more preferably 1.3 μm to 2.5 μm, and still more preferably in the range of 1.4 μm to 2.0 μm. This is because if the thickness of the liquid crystal layer is too thin, the contrast may be lowered. Conversely, if the thickness of the liquid crystal layer is too thick, the ferroelectric liquid crystal may be difficult to align. The thickness of the liquid crystal layer can be adjusted by a columnar spacer.

3. Counter substrate The counter substrate in the present invention includes a second base material, a second electrode layer formed on the second base material, and a second alignment film formed on the second electrode layer. is there.
The second base material, the second electrode layer, and the second alignment film are the same as the first base material, the first electrode layer, and the first alignment film, respectively, in the spacer side substrate. Omitted.
Hereinafter, the composition of the constituent materials of the first alignment film and the second alignment film will be described.

(1) Composition of constituent materials of first alignment film and second alignment film The combination of materials used for the first alignment film and the second alignment film is not particularly limited. It is preferable that the constituent materials of the second alignment film have different compositions. By forming the first alignment film and the second alignment film using materials having different compositions, the polarities of the first alignment film surface and the second alignment film surface can be made different depending on the respective materials. As a result, the polar surface interaction between the ferroelectric liquid crystal and the first alignment film is different from the polar surface interaction between the ferroelectric liquid crystal and the second alignment film, so that the first alignment film and the second alignment film This is because the generation of alignment defects such as zigzag defects, hairpin defects, double domains, and the like can be suppressed by appropriately selecting materials in consideration of the surface polarity.

In general, a ferroelectric liquid crystal having a phase sequence passing through an SmA phase as illustrated in the lower part of FIG. 4 has a smectic layer in order to compensate for the volume change because the layer spacing of the smectic layer is reduced during the phase change process. A domain having a bent chevron structure and different major axis directions of the liquid crystal molecules is formed depending on the bending direction, and alignment defects called zigzag defects and hairpin defects are likely to occur at the interface. In general, a ferroelectric liquid crystal having a phase sequence that does not pass through the SmA phase as illustrated in the upper part of FIG. 4 is likely to generate two regions (double domains) having different layer normal directions. By making the constituent materials of the first alignment film and the second alignment film have different compositions, the occurrence of such alignment defects can be suppressed. In particular, the occurrence of double domains can be effectively suppressed, and monodomain orientation can be obtained.

In order to make the composition of the constituent materials of the first alignment film and the second alignment film different, for example, one is a photo-alignment film and the other is a rubbing film, or one is a reactive liquid crystal alignment film and an immobilized liquid crystal. What is necessary is just to make a layer with a layer and the other into a photo-alignment film or a rubbing film. In addition, both are rubbed films, the composition of the constituent materials of the rubbing film are different, or both are the photo-alignment films, and the composition of the constituent materials of the photo-alignment film is different, or both are reactive. The composition of the first alignment film and the second alignment film is different by changing the composition of the constituent material of the fixed liquid crystal layer as the liquid crystal alignment film and the fixed liquid crystal layer are laminated. Can be.

Further, when the first alignment film and the second alignment film are photo-alignment films, for example, by using a photoisomerizable material for one photo-alignment film and a photo-reactive material for the other photo-alignment film, The composition of the constituent material of the alignment film can be different.

Furthermore, when the first alignment film and the second alignment film are photo-alignment films using a photoisomerization type material, cis-trans isomerization reactivity is selected from photoisomerization-reactive compounds according to required characteristics. By selecting various skeletons and substituents, the composition of the constituent materials of the photo-alignment film can be made different. Furthermore, the composition can be changed by changing the amount of the additive added.

Furthermore, when the first alignment film and the second alignment film are photo-alignment films using a photoreactive material, by selecting various photodimerization reactive compounds, for example, photodimerization-reactive polymer, The composition of the constituent materials can be different. Furthermore, the composition can be changed by changing the amount of the additive added.

As a combination of materials used for the first alignment film and the second alignment film, among the above, one of the alignment films for the reactive liquid crystal and the fixed liquid crystal layer is laminated, and the other is the photo-alignment film or rubbing. Or a photo-alignment film using a photo-dimerization material and the other a photo-alignment film using a photo-isomerization material, or a photo-alignment film using a photo-dimerization material Preferably, the other is a rubbing film, or one is a photo-alignment film using a photoisomerizable material and the other is a rubbing film. The fixed liquid crystal layer tends to have a relatively positive polarity relative to the photo-alignment film or the rubbing film. Therefore, in the case of this combination, the negative polarity of spontaneous polarization of the ferroelectric liquid crystal tends to face the fixed liquid crystal layer side due to the polar surface interaction. In addition, a photo-alignment film using a photodimerization type material tends to have a relatively positive polarity compared to a photo-alignment film using a photoisomerization type material. Due to the action, the negative polarity of the spontaneous polarization of the ferroelectric liquid crystal tends to face the photo-alignment film side using the photodimerization type material. Furthermore, since photo-alignment films using photo-dimerization materials tend to have a relatively positive polarity compared to rubbing films, the negative polarity of spontaneous polarization of ferroelectric liquid crystals is caused by photo-dimerization due to the polar surface interaction. It tends to face the photo-alignment film side using the material. Also, the rubbing film tends to have a relatively positive polarity relative to the photo-alignment film using the photoisomerization type material. Therefore, the negative polarity of the spontaneous polarization of the ferroelectric liquid crystal is caused by the polar surface interaction. It tends to turn to the side. In the case of such a combination, the direction of spontaneous polarization of the ferroelectric liquid crystal can be controlled, and the occurrence of alignment defects can be effectively suppressed.

In particular, the first alignment film is a laminate of a reactive liquid crystal alignment film and a fixed liquid crystal layer, the second alignment film is a photo-alignment film or a rubbing film, or the first alignment film is a photodimerization type. A photo-alignment film using a material and a second alignment film as a photo-alignment film using a photoisomerizable material or a first alignment film as a photo-alignment film using a photo-dimerization material and a second alignment Preferably, the film is a rubbing film, or the first alignment film is a rubbing film and the second alignment film is a photo-alignment film using a photoisomerizable material.
When the ferroelectric liquid crystal is dropped on the first alignment film of the spacer side substrate when the liquid crystal display element of the present invention is manufactured, the ferroelectric liquid crystal is applied to the spacer side substrate side on which the ferroelectric liquid crystal is dropped. There is a tendency that the negative electrode of spontaneous polarization of the liquid crystal faces. Further, as described above, the fixed liquid crystal layer tends to have a relatively positive polarity relative to the photo-alignment film or the rubbing film, and the photo-alignment film using the photo-dimerization type material is a photo-isomerization type material. There is a tendency that the positive polarity is relatively stronger than that of the photo-alignment film using the photo-alignment, and the photo-alignment film using the photo-dimerization type material tends to have a relatively positive polarity rather than the rubbing film. Tends to have a relatively stronger positive polarity than a photo-alignment film using a photoisomerizable material. Therefore, in order to effectively suppress alignment defects, it is preferable that the combination of materials used for the first alignment film and the second alignment film is as described above.

4). Other Configurations The liquid crystal display element of the present invention may have polarizing plates on the outer sides of the spacer side substrate and the counter substrate.
The polarizing plate used in the present invention is not particularly limited as long as it transmits only a specific direction among the wave of light, and a polarizing plate generally used as a polarizing plate of a liquid crystal display element should be used. Can do.

5. Method for Driving Liquid Crystal Display Element As a method for driving the liquid crystal display element of the present invention, the high-speed response of ferroelectric liquid crystal can be used. A field sequential color system that particularly requires high-speed response is suitable.

The driving method of the liquid crystal display element is not limited to the field sequential method, and may be a color filter method that performs color display using a colored layer.

Furthermore, as a driving method of the liquid crystal display element, an active matrix system using a thin film transistor (TFT) is preferable. This is because by adopting an active matrix system using TFTs, the target pixel can be reliably turned on and off, and a high-quality display becomes possible.

FIG. 9 shows an example of an active matrix liquid crystal display element using TFTs. The liquid crystal display element 1 illustrated in FIG. 9 includes a TFT substrate (spacer side substrate 6) in which a TFT element 23t is disposed on a first base material 2, and a common electrode (second electrode layer 13) on the second base material 12. And a common electrode substrate (counter substrate 16) on which the second alignment film 15 is formed. On the TFT substrate (spacer side substrate 6), gate lines 23x, source lines 23y, TFT elements 23t, and pixel electrodes 23p (first electrode layer 3) are formed. The gate line 23x and the source line 23y are arranged vertically and horizontally, respectively, and by applying a signal to the gate line 23x and the source line 23y, the TFT element 23t can be operated to drive the ferroelectric liquid crystal. A portion where the gate line 23x and the source line 23y intersect with each other is insulated by an insulating layer (not shown), and the signal on the gate line 23x and the signal on the source line 23y can operate independently. A portion surrounded by the gate line 23x and the source line 23y is a pixel 20 which is a minimum unit for driving the liquid crystal display element. Each pixel 20 includes at least one TFT element 23t and a pixel electrode 23p (first electrode). Layer 3) is formed. Then, by sequentially applying a signal voltage to the gate line and the source line, the TFT element of each pixel can be operated. In FIG. 9, the columnar spacer, the first alignment film, and the liquid crystal layer are omitted.

In the above example, the spacer side substrate is a TFT substrate and the counter substrate is a common electrode substrate. However, the present invention is not limited to this, and the spacer side substrate is a common electrode substrate and the counter substrate is a TFT substrate. There may be. When the counter substrate is a TFT substrate, columnar spacers are arranged on the spacer side substrate in accordance with the arrangement of the gate lines and the source lines formed on the counter substrate.

The driving method of the liquid crystal display element may be a segment method.

B. Next, a method for manufacturing a liquid crystal display element of the present invention will be described.
The liquid crystal display element manufacturing method of the present invention is formed on a first base material, a first electrode layer and a plurality of columnar spacers formed on the first base material, and on the first electrode layer and the columnar spacers. A spacer-side substrate preparation step for preparing a spacer-side substrate having the formed first alignment film, a second base material, a second electrode layer formed on the second base material, and the second electrode layer A counter substrate preparation step of preparing a counter substrate having a second alignment film formed on the substrate; a liquid crystal dropping step of dropping a ferroelectric liquid crystal on the first alignment film of the spacer side substrate; and the ferroelectricity A method for manufacturing a liquid crystal display device, comprising: a substrate bonding step of bonding a spacer-side substrate on which liquid crystal is dropped and the counter substrate in a reduced-pressure atmosphere; and a liquid crystal alignment step of aligning the ferroelectric liquid crystal, In the spacer side substrate preparation process The portion extending in the alignment treatment direction of the first alignment film and having a width of 1 mm or more. When a straight line is drawn by connecting any columnar spacer in the portion, three parallel straight lines are drawn. The columnar spacers are formed so that the regular parts that are close to each other do not exist in the display region.

The manufacturing method of the liquid crystal display element of this invention is demonstrated referring drawings.
FIG. 10 is a process diagram showing an example of a method for producing a liquid crystal display element of the present invention. First, as illustrated in FIG. 10 (a), a photosensitive resin layer is formed on the first substrate 2 on which the first electrode layer 3 is formed, exposed through a photomask, developed, and columnar. The spacer 4 is formed (columnar spacer forming step). At this time, as illustrated in FIG. 11, the first alignment film extends in the alignment processing direction s and has a width of 1 mm or more, and a straight line is drawn by connecting an arbitrary columnar spacer in the position. In some cases, the columnar spacers 4 are formed so that there is no regular part in the display area in which three or more parallel straight lines are close to each other.

Next, as illustrated in FIG. 10A, the first alignment film 5 is formed on the first electrode layer 3 and the columnar spacer 4 (first alignment film forming step). Thereby, the spacer side board | substrate 6 is obtained (spacer side board | substrate preparation process).

Next, as exemplified in FIG. 10A, the second alignment film 15 is formed on the second substrate 12 on which the second electrode layer 13 is formed (second alignment film forming step). Thereby, the counter substrate 16 is obtained (counter substrate preparation step).

Next, as illustrated in FIG. 10B, the ferroelectric liquid crystal 26 is ejected in an isotropic phase by an ink jet method. At this time, as illustrated in FIG. 11, the ferroelectric liquid crystal 26 is dropped in a straight line at equal intervals (k) (liquid crystal dropping step). Although not shown, the dropped ferroelectric liquid crystal 26 wets and spreads on the first alignment film 5.

Next, although not shown, a sealing agent is applied to the peripheral portion of the spacer-side substrate 6 so as to surround the outer periphery of the plurality of columnar spacers 4.

Next, as illustrated in FIG. 10B, the spacer-side substrate 6 on which the ferroelectric liquid crystal 26 is dropped and the counter substrate 16 are subjected to the alignment treatment of the first alignment film 5 and the second alignment film 15. It is made to oppose so that a direction may become substantially parallel.

Subsequently, as illustrated in FIG. 10C, the space between the spacer side substrate 6 and the counter substrate 16 is sufficiently reduced, and the spacer side substrate 6 and the counter substrate 16 are overlapped under a reduced pressure, and a predetermined pressure is applied. The ferroelectric liquid crystal 26 is filled between the spacer side substrate 6 and the counter substrate 16 and the cell gap is made uniform. Subsequently, the pressure is further applied between the spacer side substrate 6 and the counter substrate 16 by returning to the normal pressure. Next, although not shown, the region to which the sealant is applied is irradiated with ultraviolet rays to cure the sealant, and the spacer-side substrate 6 and the counter substrate 16 are bonded (substrate bonding step).

Thereafter, although not shown, the sealed ferroelectric liquid crystal 26 is aligned by slowly cooling to room temperature (liquid crystal alignment step).

According to the present invention, the columnar spacer is formed so that the regular region where the plurality of columnar spacers are arranged with the predetermined regularity does not exist in the display region, so that the alignment disorder caused by the columnar spacer is improved. be able to.
Hereinafter, each process in the manufacturing method of the liquid crystal display element of this invention is demonstrated.

1. Spacer side substrate preparation step The spacer side substrate preparation step in the present invention includes a first base material, a first electrode layer and a plurality of columnar spacers formed on the first base material, and the first electrode layer and the columnar spacer. A spacer-side substrate having a first alignment film formed on the first alignment film, wherein the spacer-side substrate extends in the alignment processing direction of the first alignment film and has a width of 1 mm or more. In addition, the columnar spacers are formed such that when a straight line is drawn by connecting any of the columnar spacers, there is no regular part in the display region where three or more parallel straight lines are close to each other. It is a process.

In the spacer-side substrate preparation step in the present invention, the columnar spacer forming step for forming the columnar spacer so that the regular portion does not exist in the display region on the first base material, the first electrode layer, A first alignment film forming step of forming a first alignment film on the first base material on which the columnar spacers are formed.
Hereinafter, each process in the spacer side substrate preparation process will be described.

(1) Columnar spacer formation process The columnar spacer formation process in this invention is a process of forming a columnar spacer on the 1st base material so that the said regular site | part does not exist in a display area.

The width (w) that defines the regular part may be 1 mm or more. However, when the ferroelectric liquid crystal is dropped linearly at equal intervals in the liquid crystal dropping step described later, the ferroelectric liquid crystal is It is preferable that the widths are equidistantly dropped in a straight line.
In addition, when the ferroelectric liquid crystal is dropped in a straight line at a uniform interval width, the equal interval width means that the droplets of the ferroelectric liquid crystal 26 dropped in a straight line form as illustrated in FIG. This is the distance k from the center point to the center point of the other droplets of the ferroelectric liquid crystal 26 dropped in a straight line.
As illustrated in FIG. 12, the ferroelectric liquid crystal 26 dropped in a straight line tends to wet and spread on the first alignment film 5 in the direction of the arrow. At this time, there is a tendency that the distance k ′ is substantially the same as the equally spaced width (k). Then, as shown in FIG. 12, for example, the ferroelectric liquid crystal 26 dropped in a plurality of straight lines comes into contact with the vicinity of the region m when it spreads wet. In the vicinity of the region m in contact with the ferroelectric liquid crystal, disorder of alignment of the ferroelectric liquid crystal is likely to occur. Therefore, it is considered that the disorder of alignment of the ferroelectric liquid crystal is more likely to occur in the vicinity of the columnar spacer 4 disposed in the vicinity of the region m. Therefore, if a regular portion having the same width as the equally spaced width in which the ferroelectric liquid crystal is dropped linearly exists in the display area, alignment disorder occurs along the straight line on which the columnar spacers are arranged. It is assumed that it will be easier. Therefore, in the present invention, columnar spacers are formed so that such regular portions do not exist in the display region.

Since the other points of the regular part are described in the above section “A. Liquid crystal display element 1. Spacer side substrate (1) Columnar spacer”, description thereof is omitted here.

The method for forming the columnar spacer is not particularly limited as long as the columnar spacer can be formed so that the above-described regular portion does not exist in the display region. As a method for forming the columnar spacer, a general method for forming a columnar spacer can be applied, and examples thereof include a photolithography method, a transfer method, an ink jet method, and a screen printing method.

The columnar spacer forming step may be performed before the first alignment film forming step, the columnar spacer may be formed on the first base material, or the columnar spacer may be formed on the first electrode layer. That is, the columnar spacer and the first electrode layer may be formed in this order on the first substrate, or the first electrode layer and the columnar spacer may be formed in this order.

Since the other points of the columnar spacer are described in the above section “A. Liquid crystal display element 1. Spacer side substrate (1) Columnar spacer”, description thereof is omitted here.

(2) First Alignment Film Formation Step The first alignment film formation step in the present invention is a step of forming the first alignment film on the first substrate on which the first electrode layer and the columnar spacer are formed.
In the first alignment film forming step, a single layer alignment film may be formed, or a reactive liquid crystal alignment film is formed, and the reactive liquid crystal is fixed on the reactive liquid crystal alignment film. A liquid crystal layer may be formed. Hereinafter, these two aspects will be described separately.

(i)第1態様
(I) 1st aspect The 1st orientation film formation process of this aspect is a process of forming a 1st orientation film on the 1st substrate in which the 1st electrode layer and the above-mentioned columnar spacer were formed, and the 1st orientation film This is a step of forming a single-layer alignment film as a film.

The method for forming the first alignment film is not particularly limited as long as the alignment film capable of aligning the ferroelectric liquid crystal is obtained, and examples thereof include rubbing treatment and photo-alignment treatment. It is done.
In general, a rubbing film can achieve a higher pretilt angle than a photo-alignment film, and thus an alignment film capable of suppressing the occurrence of zigzag defects and hairpin defects can be obtained by rubbing treatment. Can do.
In addition, since the photo-alignment process is a non-contact alignment process, there is no generation of static electricity or dust, and it is useful in that the quantitative alignment process can be controlled.
Hereinafter, the photo-alignment process and the rubbing process will be described.

(A) Photo-alignment treatment When forming a photo-alignment film by photo-alignment treatment, a first alignment film-forming coating solution obtained by diluting a photo-alignment material with an organic solvent is applied on the first electrode layer, Forming a photo-alignment film by drying and irradiating the resulting film with light with controlled polarization, causing photoexcitation reactions (decomposition, isomerization, dimerization) and imparting anisotropy to the film Can do.

Note that the photo-alignment treatment is the same as that described in JP-A-2006-350322, JP-A-2006-323214, JP-A-2005-258429, JP-A-2005-258428, and the like.

(B) Rubbing treatment When a rubbing film is formed by rubbing treatment, a predetermined material is applied on the first electrode layer, and the obtained film is rubbed with a rubbing cloth in a certain direction to make the film anisotropic. Can be applied to form a rubbing film.

Examples of the method for applying the material include a roll coating method, a rod bar coating method, a slot die coating method, a wire bar coating method, an ink jet method, a flexographic printing method, and a screen printing method.

As the rubbing cloth, for example, a cloth made of a fiber such as nylon resin, vinyl resin, rayon, or cotton can be used. For example, by rotating a drum wound with such a rubbing cloth and bringing it into contact with the surface of the film using the above materials, fine grooves are formed in one direction on the film surface, and anisotropy is imparted to the film. Is done.

Since the other points of the rubbing film are described in the above section “A. Liquid crystal display element 1. Spacer side substrate (2) First alignment film”, description thereof is omitted here.

(Ii) Second Aspect The first alignment film forming step of this aspect is a step of forming a first alignment film on a first substrate on which a first electrode layer and a columnar spacer are formed, and first a reactive liquid crystal Forming a fixed liquid crystal layer formed by fixing a reactive liquid crystal on the reactive liquid crystal alignment film. That is, as the first alignment film, a reactive liquid crystal alignment film and an immobilized liquid crystal layer are stacked.

Note that the method for forming the alignment film for reactive liquid crystal is the same as the method for forming the first alignment film described in the first aspect, and thus the description thereof is omitted here.
As for the method for forming the fixed liquid crystal layer, reactive liquid crystals described in JP-A-2006-350322, JP-A-2006-323214, JP-A-2005-258429, JP-A-2005-258428, etc. This is the same as the layer forming method.

2. Counter substrate preparation step The counter substrate preparation step in the present invention is a step of preparing a counter substrate in which a second electrode layer and a second alignment film are formed on a second base material.

Usually, the second alignment film forming step includes a second alignment film forming step of forming the second alignment film on the second substrate on which the second electrode layer is formed. Note that the second alignment film forming step is the same as the first alignment film forming step in the spacer-side substrate preparation step, and a description thereof will be omitted here.
Further, since the materials used for the first alignment film and the second alignment film are described in the above section “A. Liquid crystal display element 3. Counter substrate”, description thereof is omitted here.

3. Liquid Crystal Dropping Step The liquid crystal dropping step in the present invention is a step of dropping a ferroelectric liquid crystal on the first alignment film of the spacer side substrate.

When the ferroelectric liquid crystal is dropped on the first alignment film of the spacer side substrate, the ferroelectric liquid crystal is usually heated. The temperature of the ferroelectric liquid crystal is set to a temperature at which the ferroelectric liquid crystal exhibits an isotropic phase or a nematic phase. The specific temperature differs depending on the type of ferroelectric liquid crystal and is appropriately selected. Note that the upper limit of the temperature of the ferroelectric liquid crystal is a temperature at which the ferroelectric liquid crystal does not deteriorate. Usually, the temperature of the ferroelectric liquid crystal is set in the vicinity of the nematic phase-isotropic phase transition temperature, or is set to 0 ° C. to 10 ° C. higher than the nematic phase-isotropic phase transition temperature.

As a method for dropping the ferroelectric liquid crystal, any method can be used as long as it can drop the ferroelectric liquid crystal on the first alignment film on which the columnar spacers are formed and can drop a predetermined amount that can be sealed. It is not limited. Examples of the dropping method of the ferroelectric liquid crystal include ejection methods such as an ink jet method and a dispenser method. Of these, the inkjet method is preferable. If the inkjet method is used, the ferroelectric liquid crystal can be dropped in a continuous manner, so that the ferroelectric liquid crystal can be dropped so that the distance that the ferroelectric liquid crystal spreads on the first alignment film becomes short. This is because it is possible to suppress the loss of alignment at the contact interface of the ferroelectric liquid crystal.

Among them, it is preferable to drop the ferroelectric liquid crystal in a straight line with an equal interval. When the ferroelectric liquid crystal is dropped in a straight line at equal intervals, the ferroelectric liquid crystal spreads on the first alignment film as compared with the case where the ferroelectric liquid crystal is dropped intermittently in a dot shape. Ferroelectric liquid crystal can be dropped so that the distance becomes shorter. For this reason, it is possible to suppress the alignment from being lost at the portion where the ferroelectric liquid crystal contacts, and to seal the ferroelectric liquid crystal between the spacer side substrate and the counter substrate in a good alignment state.

In addition, when the ferroelectric liquid crystal is dropped linearly, the ferroelectric liquid crystal is dropped linearly so that the linear direction is substantially parallel or substantially perpendicular to the alignment processing direction of the first alignment film, for example. can do.

Since the ferroelectric liquid crystal is described in the above section “A. Liquid crystal display element 2. Ferroelectric liquid crystal”, description thereof is omitted here.

4). Substrate bonding step The substrate bonding step in the present invention is a step of bonding the spacer side substrate on which the ferroelectric liquid crystal is dropped and the counter substrate in a reduced pressure atmosphere.

Before the spacer side substrate and the counter substrate are bonded together, a sealant is usually applied to the peripheral edge of at least one of the spacer side substrate and the counter substrate. For example, the sealing agent is applied in a frame shape so as to surround the outer periphery of the plurality of columnar spacers.

Moreover, when apply | coating a sealing agent to a spacer side board | substrate, a sealing agent may be apply | coated on a 1st base material and you may apply | coat on a 1st alignment film. When the sealing agent is applied on the first base material, the adhesion between the spacer side substrate and the counter substrate can be improved. When applying the sealing agent on the first substrate, the first alignment film is formed in a pattern so that the first alignment film is not formed on the peripheral edge of the first substrate. On the other hand, also when apply | coating a sealing agent to a counter substrate, a sealing agent may be apply | coated on a 2nd base material and you may apply | coat on a 2nd alignment film.

In relation to the columnar spacer, the sealant may be applied to the spacer side substrate on which the columnar spacer is formed, may be applied to the counter substrate on which the columnar spacer is not formed, or may be applied to both substrates. Also good. Further, the sealing agent may be applied to the spacer side substrate on which the ferroelectric liquid crystal is dropped, or may be applied to the counter substrate on which the ferroelectric liquid crystal is not dropped, in relation to the ferroelectric liquid crystal. , May be applied to both substrates. In any case, the sealant is applied so that the outer periphery of the columnar spacer is surrounded when the spacer-side substrate and the counter substrate are overlapped.

In addition, when applying the sealing agent to the spacer side substrate, the sealing agent may be applied before dropping the ferroelectric liquid crystal on the spacer side substrate, or after applying the ferroelectric liquid crystal to the spacer side substrate. It may be applied.

As the sealing agent, sealing agents generally used for liquid crystal display elements can be used, and examples thereof include thermosetting resins and ultraviolet curable resins.

The method for applying the sealing agent is not particularly limited as long as it can apply the sealing agent at a predetermined position, and examples thereof include a dispenser method and a screen printing method.

After applying the sealant in this way, the spacer side substrate and the counter substrate are overlapped. When the spacer side substrate and the counter substrate are overlaid, the spacer side substrate and the counter substrate are opposed so that the alignment processing direction of the first alignment film and the alignment processing direction of the second alignment film are substantially parallel.

Furthermore, when the spacer side substrate and the counter substrate are overlapped, it is preferable that the chamber is evacuated to sufficiently reduce the pressure between the spacer side substrate and the counter substrate. Thereby, it can prevent that a space | gap remains in a liquid crystal cell.
After the spacer side substrate and the counter substrate are made to face each other in this way, the spacer side substrate and the counter substrate are superposed under reduced pressure, and a certain pressure is applied so that the cell gap becomes uniform. Then, by returning the inside of the chamber to normal pressure, further pressure is applied between the spacer side substrate and the counter substrate. Thereby, a cell gap can be made more uniform. In this way, the spacer side substrate and the counter substrate are pressure-bonded via the sealant.

After the spacer side substrate and the counter substrate are overlaid, the sealant is cured and the spacer side substrate and the counter substrate are bonded together.
The curing method of the sealing agent varies depending on the type of the sealing agent used, and examples thereof include a method of irradiating with ultraviolet rays and a method of heating. At this time, normally, the sealant is cured while maintaining the pressure when the spacer-side substrate and the counter substrate are overlapped.

5. Liquid crystal alignment step The liquid crystal alignment step in the present invention is a step of aligning ferroelectric liquid crystals.
After bonding the spacer side substrate and the counter substrate, the ferroelectric liquid crystal sealed between the spacer side substrate and the counter substrate is aligned. Specifically, the ferroelectric liquid crystal is in a chiral smectic C (SmC * ) phase state. As described above, since the ferroelectric liquid crystal is heated to be in a nematic phase or isotropic phase, for example, the ferroelectric liquid crystal can be cooled to be in the SmC * phase.

When cooling the heated ferroelectric liquid crystal, the ferroelectric liquid crystal is usually gradually cooled to room temperature.

When a polymerizable monomer is added to the ferroelectric liquid crystal, the polymerizable monomer is polymerized after aligning the ferroelectric liquid crystal. The polymerization method of the polymerizable monomer is appropriately selected according to the type of the polymerizable monomer. For example, when an ultraviolet curable resin monomer is used as the polymerizable monomer, the polymerizable monomer can be polymerized by ultraviolet irradiation. .

Further, when polymerizing the polymerizable monomer, a voltage may or may not be applied to the liquid crystal layer composed of the ferroelectric liquid crystal, but no voltage is applied to the liquid crystal layer. It is preferable to polymerize a polymerizable monomer.

It is included in the technical scope of the invention.

The following examples illustrate the present invention in more detail.
[Example 1]
First, the glass substrate on which the ITO electrode is formed is thoroughly washed, a transparent resist (trade name: NN780, manufactured by JSR) is spin-coated on the glass substrate, dried under reduced pressure, and prebaked at 90 ° C. for 3 minutes. It was. Subsequently, it exposed to a mask with 100 mJ / cm 2 ultraviolet rays, developed with an inorganic alkali solution, and post-baked at 230 ° C. for 30 minutes. As a result, the columnar spacers 4 having a side of a square column having a side of 20 μm and a height of 1.5 μm were formed in the arrangement shown in FIG. At this time, the density of the columnar spacers was 5 / mm 2 .

Next, a 2% by mass cyclopentanone solution of a photodimerization type material (trade name: ROP-103, manufactured by Lorrick Technology) is spin-coated on the substrate on which the columnar spacers are formed at a rotation speed of 1500 rpm for 15 seconds. After drying at 10 ° C. for 10 minutes, alignment treatment was performed by irradiating with linearly polarized ultraviolet light at 25 ° C. for about 100 mJ / cm 2 . Further, a 2% by mass cyclopentanone solution of a polymerizable liquid crystal material (trade name: ROF-5101, manufactured by Lorrick Technology) is spin-coated on a photo-alignment film using a photodimerization type material, and the mixture is heated at 55 ° C. for 3 minutes. After drying, non-polarized ultraviolet rays were exposed to 1000 mJ / cm 2 at 55 ° C. Thereby, a spacer side substrate was obtained.

Next, the glass substrate on which the ITO electrode is formed is thoroughly washed, and a 2% by mass cyclopentanone solution of a photodimerization type material (trade name: ROP-102, manufactured by Lorrick Technology) is rotated on the glass substrate. After spin coating at several 1500 rpm for 15 seconds and drying at 130 ° C. for 15 minutes, alignment treatment was performed by irradiation with linearly polarized ultraviolet rays at 25 ° C. at about 100 mJ / cm 2 . Thereby, a counter substrate was obtained.

Next, the spacer side substrate was placed on a single-axis stage set at room temperature (23 ° C.), and while moving it at a speed of about 60 mm / second, using an inkjet device (SE-128 made by Dimatic), A ferroelectric liquid crystal (manufactured by AZ Electronic Materials, trade name: R2301) is ejected in an isotropic phase at a frequency of about 3600 Hz for 1 second, and the ferroelectric liquid crystal is formed in a plurality of lines at intervals of 2 mm. Applied.

Next, an ultraviolet heat curable sealant (manufactured by Kyoritsu Chemical Industry Co., Ltd., trade name: WORLD ROCK 718) was applied to the periphery of the spacer-side substrate using a seal dispenser.
Next, the hot plate disposed in the vacuum chamber was heated to 110 ° C., and the spacer side substrate coated with the ferroelectric liquid crystal was placed on the hot plate. Next, the counter substrate was adsorbed by an adsorption plate heated to 110 ° C., and the spacer side substrate and the counter substrate were opposed to each other so that the alignment treatment directions of the respective alignment films were parallel. Subsequently, both substrates were brought into close contact with each other in a state where the vacuum chamber was evacuated so that the pressure between the substrates was sufficiently reduced, and then the inside of the vacuum chamber was returned to normal pressure. Next, ultraviolet rays were irradiated at 1 J / cm 2 to cure the ultraviolet curable sealant, and the two substrates were adhered. Next, the ferroelectric liquid crystal was aligned by slowly cooling the liquid crystal cell to room temperature.
